4 out of 5 stars A bit over my head.......2007-03-19

I like the textbook because it gives some great examples when trying to example terms. But, the writing in textbook is a bit confusing at times. It seems the authors could have written it in more layman's terms.

I'm not going to be a lawyer. So, why do difficult of text. If you are taking this course online, the the textbank of questions seems to come out of the blue. You are suppose to be able to read between the lines.

5 out of 5 stars Very good experience.......2005-09-21

The product arrived to me in a quick manner. I had a question after I bought the book, hence I emailed the company. They had quick response and assured me that I bought the correct product. I highly recommend purchasing from this seller.

Mistakenly I hit the 1-click key and amazon automatically with no warning charged the purchase. I contacted the seller directly at dplotkin@hartford.edu and this person promptly responded and did not charge my card. Thank you!

      5 out of 5 stars Great Start.......2006-05-07

This is an excellent beginner's law book. This is also helpful for accountants preparing to take their CPA exam. This book has side references on questions and parts that have been used on the CPA exam. I highly recommend keeping this book as a basic easy to read and follow reference tool for legal issues concerning corporate entities.

      5 out of 5 stars Anderson's Business Law.......2004-02-20

This is an excellent compendium of the major subject areas
taught in a business law course. The book has a fair coverage
of legal rights, government regulatory processes, contracts,
personal property, sales, commercial paper, creditor rights,
agency and employment, partnerships, corporations, real property,
the Uniform Commercial Code and an index. The work presents
typical case studies utilizing the classic factual patterns and
the decision. There are important case studies contained
for student homework assignments and class participation.
The work is edited by some important CPA Review giants like
Dr. Fox -famous for his rendition of the CPA law review.
It is a worthy purchase for anyone studying business law or
      sitting for the CPA Examination.

The work is easy to read considering the complexity of some
of the topics discussed. i.e. HDC (holder in due course)
The grammar and sentence structure are very readable for students.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Beginners Law Resource.......2002-08-09

This book is a must have for anyone interested in learning more about Business Law. The book utilizes real life cases, giving you perspective into the every changing world of law. I give this book 5 stars. It's a must have.

      5 out of 5 stars A Compelling Law Textbook!.......2001-03-28

Legal textbooks by nature are encyclopedic and ponderous, however, this text is one of the most interesting and compelling books I have ever read on the subject of law. The material is presented clearly and rationally and each topic is supplemented heavily by significant "real-world" examples. The examples are timely and upbeat and very interesting to read. You will find it difficult to avoid reading all the real-world examples at one sitting. If you are forced to purchase this text for a Business Law class.....count yourself lucky. This one is the best. If you are merely curious about the inner-workings of torts, contract law and intellectual propery rights, then this is the book to buy.

              Book Description

Operations Research began as a field with the mathematical scheduling of a massive project—logistically supplying Europe with military equipment and goods during the 2 nd World War. Today project scheduling research continues to grow in the variety of its theoretical models, in its magnitude, and in its application. As the world becomes more interrelated and complex, the wider its research is applied to an increasing number of project scheduling problems.

The book surveys the current state-of-the-art in this realm of operations research with chapters written by the respective leading experts on each topic. It will cover the range of the key models in the field, including deterministic, probabilistic, single- and multi-mode, single- and multi-objective, and a general model on discrete-continuous resources. Recent solution algorithms are systematically examined. The book summarizes the current developments and theoretical achievements in the field. These new developments include project uncertainty and grid resource management.

PERSPECTIVES IN MODERN PROJECT SCHEDULING systematically presents this dynamically developing area in three parts. Part I discusses new models of the project management process that are being developed. They include an alternative to the well-known PERT technique, consideration of disturbances during the project realization, introduction of new constraints like due dates or setup times, as well as a general discussion on classification of resources.

Part II outlines and evaluates the new algorithms that have been developed to solve the strongly NP-hard resource constrained project scheduling efficiently with acceptable accuracy. New lower bounds for the RCPSP are proposed, followed by smart justification technique and a series of Metaheuristics. Finally, a neural network approach is introduced.

Part III is devoted to new areas of applications of the project management models and the algorithms — for example, pharmaceutical research, grid computing, factory pick-up of new cars, batch scheduling in process industries and make-to-order (project driven) manufacturing — that have been developed to solve project scheduling problems in these application areas.

The book will be of interest to academics and students in project management and scheduling in Business Schools, Operations Research/Management Science, Computer Science & Engineering, Systems Analysis, and Applied Mathematics. In addition, decision makers, consultants and practitioners in industry, government and service organizations will also be interested in this book.

                  Book Description

In this fascinating tour through cultural, global, economic, and business history, icon of the financial world Robert Menschel explores the phenomenon of crowd psychology and its effects on business and culture. Explaining how crowd psychology creates market bubbles and irrational exuberance, Menschel mines world history—from the rise of the Nazis in Germany, to the fanatical love of brands, to the Dutch tulip craze of the seventeenth century, to America’s 1990s Internet bubble—to reveal how the behavior of crowds negatively affects the business world. Championing the causes of individuality and common sense, Markets, Mobs & Mayhem offers real wisdom for investors who want to keep their wits when everyone else is losing theirs.

I found the book to be a good reminder to keep a level head. If you do that while the world is in chaos you will benefit yourself and those you care about.

                  1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing.......2003-02-09

After reading "Devil Take the Hindmost," which deals very intelligently and thoroughly with investment bubbles of all kinds going back to the South Sea Bubble, I was very much looking forward to reading this book, particularly as it has been written by a very successful stock market investor. I was, however, sadly disappointed.

The author expends virtually all of his efforts discussing mob behavior, but rarely in the context of investments and market madness, i.e., most of the examples he uses relate to Ku Klux Klan activities, the French citizens' attack on the Bastille, the Watts riots and other such emotional mob activities. While these are often interesting and sometimes horrifying, they have only tangential bearing on market manias and investment fads. Furthermore, most of the text has been copied and pasted from reports on these activities that were written by others.

As an investment professional (and having invested in the market myself for over 35 years), I have long believed that, at least in the short term, market prices are dictated as much by psychology as by fundamentals such as profit growth, investment return expectations, balance sheets, business strategies, profit margins, competiting products and services, interest rates and such. And I thought the book would provide at least a few insights into investor psychology and how it moves markets; certainly a thorough discussion of the Dotcom and tech manias of recent years would have been a very apt topic for discussion.

Alas! There was no discussion at all about these issues of investment psychology; rather, the author was content to provide example after example of how, many times in the past, mobs are capable of taking on a life of their own and engaging in group-think, abandoning analysis and rational decision-making. Well, I guess we already know that. We are left on our own to try to figure out how "collective mob behavior" infects investors' psyches and affects the movement of stock prices.

Readers who would like a lot more insight into that process should buy "Devil Take the Hindmost," and not waste their time or money on this book.

                  2 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2003-01-11

Amazon offered Menschel's book at a combination price with Taleb's Fooled by Randomness. Mistakenly, I expected both to provide stock market guidance. Taleb's book had little and Menschel's has less.

                  1 out of 5 stars a waste of time.......2003-01-09

This is compilation of stories about crowd behavior, amusing at times, but with little or no insight, except that you should not panic. Everybody already knows that and besides it is not always true. In a stock market crash it is better to panic sooner rather than later. Also, I recall that a number of people in the WTC horror died because they decided to stay put in their offices rather than to rush down. But what I really don't like at all about this book is that it is marketed as a book for investors. This is nonsense. It is a book of stories about crowd behavior with no analysis except, as noted, the completely one-sided recommendation that you should not go along with the crowd.

5 out of 5 stars Not for the masses, but that's the point........2002-12-13

This is not a book for the masses. It won't make you rush out and buy anything. It probably won't even change your life in any substantial way. But it will make you think. And it might just prevent you from being victimized by the latest fad or swept away by the next hysteria. Most readers, I suspect, have heard of the tulipmania or the South Sea company madness, but this book gives a brief survey of the lesser known, or lesser recognized, panics or manias, including those that have nothing to do with financial markets. I found it stimulating reading, laced with a little humor.

The book's message, if internalized, operates like a Segway scooter applied to the business world. It should keep you on an even keel. And in the often topsy-turvy world of Wall Street finance (or just life in the 21st Century), it really helps to have an internal gyroscope or automatic stabilizer that keeps you from falling over every time you hit a bump in the road.

It's not a book for the masses. But that's probably just the point. Next time you want to rush out and join the herd, it might help to read, or reread, this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for the beginning investor.......2003-01-17

I was looking for a book that gave me the when, where and how to invest. This book gave me the info I needed. It is geared toward someone like me. If you're a beginner in this 'swim with the sharks' world of investing...this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Overcoming Important Misconceptions of Young Investors.......2001-03-06

This book is aimed at the young person who will be starting a first full-time job in the next year. I have graded it for its appropriateness for that audience.

Stock investing is treated now in families like sex education was conducted in the fifties. People try to avoid any reference to this delicate subject.

As a parent, you can spend over $100,000 to send your child to a private college or $50,000 for a public one. In neither place will your child pick up the basic information to make her or him financially literate about doing long-term stock investing.

Or your child may not go to or finish college, and potentially have less income as a result. Investing becomes even more important in this situation.

What's worse, regardless of what educational or vocational route these capable young people take, they will have picked up misconceptions that will discourage him or her from getting started. This book can remedy that problem, by helping your daughter or son (or grandson or granddaughter) realize that they should begin investing as soon as they have enough income to save some ($50 or so) money every month.

If you are a young person just starting your career, chances are that you are handicapped by lack of information, and misconceptions about what you should be doing. Ordering this book today is a simple, effective step towards overcoming that situation.

This book effectively addresses these misconceptions:

                  (1) It doesn't matter much when you start (Actually, starting young is the biggest advantage any investor has)

                  (2) You need thousands of dollars to get started (Some investments can be started with $25, and putting in small amounts regularly makes you more money than larger amounts less often)

                  (3) It's too complicated for a young person to understand (Most of what you need to know is covered in less than 50 pages in this book, with not that many words on a page. If you can pass algebra and high school English, you will have no trouble with this material.)

                  (4) It takes too much time to get started (You should be able to take the right steps after spending less than 15 hours over a period of two months or so.)

But taking action counts for a lot in investments (as in other areas). So I suggest that you be sure the young adults in your family know this information. You can get a copy and teach them yourself, or you can simply give each person their own. Ask them what they have done about the information from time to time, and praise any actions they take to get information, start saving, or begin investing.

If you are a young person, every month you delay starting investing is costing you hundreds of dollars over your lifetime. Can you afford to waste that much money?

I think this book will make the most sense if read after Rich Dad, Poor Dad. After reading this book, I suggest that John Bogle's Common Sense About Mutual Funds be read to deepen and widen the interest that Basic Investing Guide for the New Investor will stimulate. If you already feel motivated to invest and do not have the misconceptions I mentioned above, you may already be ready for Bogle.

May your money and your children's money be saved and invested in ways to create much financial security for your children and grandchildren!

As a parent, consider that giving this book is a lot cheaper than providing any other form of education, or providing on-going financial security for the next two generations. It's a great investment for you, as well.

As a young person, consider that investing your money well is a lot less work than taking on a second job for most of your life to increase your income. This is important to creating time and balance in your life to enjoy your family and relationships.

Get started as soon as possible!

5 out of 5 stars Did Exactly What I Expected It To Do.......2001-01-04

I am 22 years old and was interested in investing for my retirement. I had no idea where or how to get started. I needed the absolute basics. The book was simple and to the point. No confusing terms or information that was way over my head. The book contains motivational quotes, which I liked because I have been putting this off for a couple of years so they helped me get going. I would recommend the book to anyone 25 or younger that is not familiar investing, but would like to get started.

2 out of 5 stars written for the 12-year old........2001-01-03

I was pretty excited to finally get this book. But most of my expectations were far too high. This book (pamphlet would be a better title) contains only 42 pages of actual text, about 30 pages of quotes... one quote per page and very little information. If you are looking for an extremely oversimplified book on investing, this is the one. It would be a good gift for your 12-year old, but the 12-year old will be hungry for more information after taking the 30 minutes to read the book.

5 out of 5 stars Very Easy To Understand.......2000-08-15

I wanted to start investing, but was so confused. This book makes it so easy. It answered all of my questions and includes online help. I read the book, went to the website, and printed the IRA application directly from the mutual fund company. I thought you needed $1000's of dollars to get started. I got started with only $65 per month.

                            Book Description

Income taxation explained in conceptual terms: the idea of “income” (the same taxpayer's dollars should not be taxed twice or deducted twice); economics (efficiency and welfare); tax fairness (ability to pay); business accounting principles; and the time-value-of-money concept. Virtually all features of the tax system (except certain line-drawing issues) are explained with reference to these central concepts. An easily-understood treatise designed to be used by readers not particularly interested in learning all the technical details. The relevant concepts of accounting, financial theory and economics are introduced only on a “need to know” basis.

                              Book Description

This first joint biography of the Hoovers will reshape Herbert Hoover's image as a man who did little more than sit in the White House while the country suffered. Both Hoovers were dynamic, uncommon Americans who made enormous contributions to mankind, before, during, and after the presidency. Walch, Director of the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library, brings together contributions from leading scholars who have conducted extensive research into the lives of this extraordinary couple, placing them in a national and international context. He hopes to entice more historians to delve into the intricacies of their lives.

5 out of 5 stars A most illuminating and practical book.......1999-12-11

Sharon's book provides a wonderful set of insights for people who have either suffered themselves from disabling injury or have a friend or loved one who has. Indeed it addresses in illuminating detail areas of human trial which most of us never face. By doing so, we come away better equipped to hone our interfacing skills with the disabled person and are thereby able to extend true compassion and assistance toward them. The disabled person reading the book will recognize the many frustrating aspects any disability incurs but particularly if the disability is not apparent to the casual observer. Beyond that, Sharon provides the victim of disabling injury with positive ideas and action plans to deal with and overcome these frustrations. She does this with skill and wit.

Sharon begins the book with a moving account of her accident and traces step by step the profound ways it changed her life. It is a compelling story that the reader will find difficult to put down. The book is a vessel of hope, encouragement and honesty and a very easy read. Sharon faces her ordeal with courage and openess providing inspiration to us all. One becomes aware of how her qualities of character have served her well since the injury -- especially her kindness, thoughtfulness and patience toward those she meets along the way including the insensitive ones. Now she shares her unique perspective for overcoming the anger, hurt and frustration and getting on with life in a hopeful and productive manner.

5 out of 5 stars A great memoir of coping with chronic illness.......1999-06-11

Having read and reviewed many books on chronic illness, I found this one especially refreshing. The author shares through her own personal experience how to recover and cope with a chronic illness or disability. Although the author's problem deals with inner ear and balance problems, the books is applicable across many different health problems and disorders. I found the chapters on Finances, Spirituality, Filling Time and Sex and Body Image very insightful and very often missing from typical guides. These chapters alone make this book worthwhile for anyone dealing with chronic illness, disability, or health disorders.

                                5 out of 5 stars A much-needed look at an often-ignored medical topic.......1999-04-26

I very much recommend "Invisible Illnesses." Too often, I think health and recovery books are written by practioners, and so have an extremely limited (and frequently, somewhat patronizing) point-of-view. There just aren't enough books written from patients' perspectives, and so, this book is a welcome find. It's full of lots of practical strategies for dealing with any sort of complicated and frustrating medical diagnosis. It also--impressively so, considering that the author is recovering from a truly horrific accident--has a strong sense of hope. As someone attempting to rehabilitate from a probably-permanently disabling injury herself, it's refreshing to me to read a book that not only is very honest--but also presents a "yes, you actually can survive terrible, life-altering events" attitude.

This book is a great choice for anyone suffering from a chronic illness, injury, disability, and/or other daunting life challenge.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable guide for parents or friends of the invisibly ill.......1999-04-15

Sharon tells us, in plain English, what it is like to be afflicted with an invisible illness. More importantly, she provides a basic guide for those of us who must treat or cope with the inner turmoil experienced by such people. Sharon's illness, while totally different from my son's severe AD/HD condition, manifests itself in many of the same ways. I truly believe that reading her book has made me a better parent.

I highly recommend Invisible Illnesses and Disabilities to all who wish to improve their understanding of the people around them.

4 out of 5 stars Honest, practical, and useful.......1999-04-06

I read Sharon E. Smith's book -- and then I reread it. This book is 150 pages of practical advice and information targeted at those who suffer from one of the many silent illnesses or injuries that people live with. Ms. Smith knows first-hand of what she writes since she lives with perilymph fistulas in both ears. And I know she knows what she is writing about because I too suffer from a silent disease, Meniere's Disease (another vestibular ailment with some symptoms similar to perilymph fistulas).

What makes this book useful is that the advice Ms. Smith provides is concerned with ordinary, mundane aspects of life. She is honest about the kinds of changes and results that enter a person's life when they have an invisible disease. She also helps prepare her readers for the kinds of negative comments they may receive simply because others cnanot see the results of the illness and make unfortunate assumptions about personal initiative or willpower.

I particularly like the straight-forward discussion of sensitive topics such as sexuality and spirituality, although I wish that she provided more coverage of spirituality as a resource for coping. I also like her section on "Ways Others Can Help." For the countless people who say, "Just tell me if I can do anything," Ms. Smith provides some direct, pragmatic suggestions about ways to serve their friends and family members who must live with invisible illnesses and disabilities.

Ms. Smith has obviously made great strides in coping with her own serious but invisible injury. Her story can help many others who must deal with similar circumstances and I commend this short book to the attention of all who have (or who live with and love those who have) invisible illnesses and disabilities.

                                  Book Description

Hearing Impairment - An Invisible Disability is the first work of its kind to comprehensively cover all aspects of hearing impairment. It covers the following categories through more than 100 contributions from all over the world to constitute an encyclopedia of hearing impairment:

                                  - Hearing Basics: What does hearing impairment mean? Its causes and effects are explained through many real-world examples.

                                  - Children: Childhood is a time when hearing impairment often begins, so proper treatment at an early stage can help alleviate difficulties and allow for as normal a life as possible. Many case studies from both the developed and developing parts of the world, including Indonesia and Latin America in the latter category, are provided to aid comprehension.

                                  - Hearing Aids: Through newly emerging technology and with the help of electronics companies, new and affordable hearing aids are being developed and marketed. The authors take a closer look at this burgeoning field.

                                  - Medical Aspects: Medical treatment of hearing impairment has recently shown remarkable change, manifested in improved techniques and applications all over the world. Although mainly of relevance to researchers and practicing physicians, the clear explanation of the medical and technical terminology is likely to be of interest to all concerned with the future of hearing impairment.

                                  - Social and International Help: With a wealth of assistance from individuals, NGOs, and international organizations specifically tailored to help the hearing impaired, those in need of guidance can gain confidence from the knowledge that substantial support is available to help them pursue a full and varied life.
