Publisher Prentice-Hall did a big disservice to my text by insisting on almost identical titles for two separate books dealing with the 2001 FDA Model Food Code. The smaller version "Quick Reference to the 2001 FDA Model Food Code" is an abridged version of the Code that contains the Regulatory chapters only. I wanted "Pocket Edition of the 2001 FDA Model Food Code" as the working title. One still has to look through the Code to find references and this slim volume is not "quick."

The larger text, which contains my work with the Code, was titled "Keyword Index and Quick Reference Guide to the 2001 FDA Model Food Code." This is the desktop reference and there is nothing 'lightweight or portable' about this detailed index and cross-reference to the Code. It is a "quick reference."
[...]
Here's the real deal description of the "Keyword Index and Quick Reference Guide to the 2001 FDA Model Food Code."

This is the ultimate reference text to navigate the 2001 FDA Model Food Code. The text combines an expanded alphabetical keyword and keyphrase index of over 25,000+ entries with the Regulatory Code Chapters 1 to 8. By looking up a keyword or phrase one is directed to the page and citation number in the included copy of the Code. The 'By the Numbers' Chapter lists the numerical values found within the Code. The comphrensive index assures complete coverage and location within the Code of all the main concepts. No more wasted time and frustration trying to locate a Code citation and language. This is the perfect source for Regulators, Quality Assurance Managers, Food Safety Trainers, Food Establishment operators, Design Architects, Dieticians, and anyone needing a quick and comphrensive navigation tool to the 2001 FDA Model Food Code. Also available is the 'Quick Reference to the 2001 FDA Model Food Code,' a portable format of Regulatory Chapters 1 to 8.

And, once again, please note that the 'Keyword Index and Quick Reference Guide to the 2001 FDA Model Food Code' is the large desktop volume whereas the 'Quick Reference to the 2001 FDA Model Food Code' is the smaller, lightweight, streamlined version of the Regulatory Chapters 1 to 8.

As a food safety consultant, I offer food protection manager certification programs recognized by the Conference for Food Protection. These programs are based on the FDA Food Code and students often ask questions regarding the code. Anyone who trains knows how much material and equipment you need to lug to a class. Adding the cumbersome desktop version of the food code to my bag is too much to bear. Enter the Quick Reference. It couldn't be easier. I suggest it to anyone who travels and needs the FDA Food Code as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful primer on starting a business with contact information for locating startup funds if necessary........2006-10-19

This is a valuable book (resource) for budding entrepreneurs. It seems to try to cover all the bases for starting a small business, but it can't do them all well in the space available between its covers. The book is only 288 pages long. If you are in the planning stages of starting a small business, then I highly recommend you get a copy of this book. Read it, study it, and outline it. There are helpful checklists to help you grasp the subjects. You will come up with a plethora of keywords and terms that you will want to google to find Web pages giving more detailed (and maybe more current) information.

I am a SCORE counselor (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) who typically does face-to-face counseling sessions three nights a month. It would really be neat if my clients would read this book BEFORE they came to their session with me because they would pretty much be "educated customers" ready to ask educated questions. Our sessions would be so much more beneficial.

    My favorite chapters were:

    1. Initial business concerns
    2. Your business' structure
    3. Business start-up details
    5. Sources of business assistance (SCORE is mentioned here)
    7. Your smart business plan (and a good sample plan is included)
    8. Obtaining the financing you need

The book is weak when it comes to how the Internet can be used in corresponding, hiring, and marketing. But this is just one example of how googling keywords and concepts found in the book will make the book more complete. Don't treat the book as authoritative on the law. It isn't. Nor was it ever intended to be. It is light on tax information as it relates to small business.

I was particularly impressed with the material presented in Chapter 2: Choice of Legal Entity. That subject is sorely ignored in most small business books, and it is critically important. It is a subject I regularly must spend a great deal of time discussing at my SCORE sessions. This book does a pretty good job on the topic.

Chapters 4 and 9 through 12 are easy to find fault with. The topic of each could fill a book. But having these topics covered definitely will help a budding entrepreneur know some of the issues they raise.

I would have liked the book more if Chapter 6 (marketing) had been less superficial. When I read it I got the impression that the author was more a public relations expert than a marketing expert. I generally categorize public relations as a subset of marketing. Marketing includes advertising, public relations, and a whole host of other promotion techniques. I did not get this message when I read the book. I also would have liked the book better if the Internet, email, and Web sites had been discussed more. But there are many books on those subjects. Therefore, I can't complain too much about the limited discussion of computers.

When you read this book it may feel a little like it was produced on an assembly line. Maybe it was? There are 51 versions of this book sold; the 51st is for the District of Columbia. Content is king, and this book has it. 5 stars!

Most books are pretty generic and offer precious little on how to set up your business in your own particular state. J.W. Dicks offers all of what the other books do plus much more.

This book is very complete andif you are contemplating starting a business in Florida, I hghly recommend it. Great book.

          Book Description

The world will not live without logos, but neither will capitalism silently take over democracy. So, what comes next? After capitalism comes Netocracy. Those who can harness networks of information and master new forms of communication will control finance and legislation, forming the new business and government elites. They will inherit the power; they are the Netocrats.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad -- but could be better.......2007-08-06

The original text was written in 2000, and now seven years later, I can say that many ideas presented in the book have proved right. Translation to English is of mediocre quality though. The book is filled with long, run-on sentences and suffers from extremely poor punctuation. The same ideas, by the way, are discussed to a much greater extent in The Dream Society by Rolf Jensen.

          2 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2007-01-31

I checked this book out for some background research on a paper that I'm working on for a conference. I had hoped it would be more scholarly and was quite disappointed.

This is a Tom Peterseque foray into the topic. And, that's fine, if you like that genre of work. I'm sure that my partner would eat up this book...and for a Saturday read, I'd leaf through this book.

However, noting that the book crosses different disciplines (inner jacket) proves a false assertion. Frankly, I can see how another reviewer referred to this book as "pseudo" intellectual. The boot fits.

4 out of 5 stars A new view of the future.......2007-01-10

The authors present theire view of a completly new economic system that will is generated by the information devices now available. How capitalism is being replaced by the information economy.

5 out of 5 stars The e-future is already here.......2005-08-18

The book with super ideas! But you should find them in the informational flow. And if you find and understand them - you will get the new power - the knowledge that will enable you to reach everything you want in the new net-environment.

BTW recently I noticed that the official Netocracy site www.thenetocrats.com started to work. So the new netocrats society will be in power very soon!

5 out of 5 stars The collection of fine lie.......2005-04-14

Bard and Zonderquist, based on traditional historical assumptions, try to do conclusions about the future of society. Authors are indoubtedly strong in perception of a present situation, and only thanks to this it is possible to forgive forecasts and think on updating perception of the past (see ISBN: 2913621023 for a radical history revision). They show, why the ruling class will be replaced by a new one, but do not show how they will do.

Bard paints a picture where the new social does replaces but not coexists with current formations (par examples, feodalism is not dead yet!) There are no concrete examples of social networks that will survive in near future and/or gain momentum; Bard mockingly hints that the changes will so deft that we can't notice it yet.

Perfect book. Don't rely on it. Don't trust it. Try your own way on perceiving reality and the past. And may be you get high ranks netocratic society. If there are any ranks would exist!

                    Book Description

He has been described as “bold, brazen, and totally unabashed,” “one of a kind,” and “clearly a genius.” He won the Canadian figure-skating championships six times and brought back a bronze medal from the 1976 Winter Olympic Games. He revolutionized men’s figure skating, single-handedly transforming an athletic competition into a modern art form. He is an artist, celebrity, costume designer, broadcaster, choreographer of skating routines, coach, bon vivant, world traveller, art collector, legend, and enigma. And Toller Cranston has stories to tell.

Like the time at Lake Placid when a woman drove her car directly into his bedroom and seduced him, and the groupie who broke into his house and waited for him naked except for a few strategically arranged rose petals. He writes about his encounters with the great and famous. (On meeting Joni Mitchell, for example, he asked, politely, “You sing, don’t you?”) With mixed feelings, he describes his reaction upon viewing a German-made pornographic film in which he played an unexpected part.

This is not so much a sequel to Toller Cranston’s previous best-selling memoir, Zero Tollerance, as a companion volume. There are skating stories and stories from the world of art, there are stories of good times and of bad, high times and low. There are portraits of extraordinary people who have shaped and coloured his life, parting thoughts about his relationship with the management group IMG, about his own retirement, and about the condition of skating today. But this is chiefly an entertaining look back on the first half of an eventful, unusual life by a great Canadian artist and performer.

4 out of 5 stars Outrageous Opinions and Fun from Toller Once Again.......2001-08-25

Once again, you'll be entertained with Toller's outrageous anecdotes about life as a famous figure skater. He details more of his struggles as an amateur skater in this book than in Zero Tollerance. He may act like a Drama Queen at times, but he is grounded enough not to take himself too seriously, and even pokes fun at himself. That honesty is what I like about his writing. He writes about a deranged fan who has stalked him for years and offers a vivid and quite hilarious account of dining with Liberace. You'll never look at Lee quite the same after reading Toller's experience with the famous entertainer. What I also found fascinating was Toller's opinions on today's skaters. He deplores the crass commercialism and outrageous behavior of some skaters, feeling that their behavior and attitude has done nothing to enhance the art of figure skating. He singles out the commercially popular Philippe Candeloro as a "Chippendale Dancer on Skates." You may not agree with what he has to say, but he is brutally honest and not afraid to speak his mind. He actually says what other people might think. Most importantly, if he describes a skater's faults, he also tells of their strengths. For example, Toller deplores Elvis' lack of artistry but admires his amazing technical skills. It's a shame that the CBC does not use Toller as a commentator, because he would be like a breath of fresh air instead of the usual boring dribble and fawning from today's skating commentators.

5 out of 5 stars Toller at his best!.......2001-01-05

One of the most influential skaters of the 20th Century, and a man not afraid to speak out about the world of skating.

This book is not exactly a sequel to ZERO TOLLERENCE, but it does give us some more biographical detail, regarding problems with drugs, his sometimes wild and crazy lifestyle, his painting, and his struggle to get his life on track. And, of course, Cranston's opinions on the world of figure skating--warts and all--are worth the price of the book alone. He's not afraid to criticize a sport that he helped to make popular--he sees the problems, and tells it like it is. And, from a man that has the experience and talent to back up those words, it means a great deal.

Anyone who loves skating, and is concerned about the future of the sport ought to buy this book--what he says are wise words indeed.

                    Book Description

"When I was the age of these children I could draw like Raphael. It took me many years to learn how to draw like these children."--Pablo Picasso, upon viewing an exhibition of children's drawings, as quoted by Sir Herbert Read in 1945

The idea that modern art looks like something a child can do is a long-standing cliché. For some modernists, however, the connection between their work and children's art was direct and explicit. This groundbreaking and heretical book, centered on such modern masters as Klee, Kandinsky, Picasso, and Miro, presents for the first time material from the collections of child art that these artists actually possessed as they undertook some of the greatest masterworks of their careers. As the first art historian to pursue this connection in detail, Jonathan Fineberg here explores the importance of children's art to the work of key modernists from Matisse to Jackson Pollock. Fineberg's inquiry unfolds in this handsome book, which juxtaposes modern masterpieces with the drawings by children that directly influenced them. Fineberg discusses the effect of primitivism and Freudian thought on some of these artists, and demonstrates how they valued children's art for many reasons, including its naive spontaneity and celebration of the moment, imaginative use of visual language, and its universality and candor. For each of the masters who collected child art, the reasons for doing so are as varied as his or her unique style.

Fineberg has uncovered most of these major collections of child art assembled by celebrated modernists. Many examples from these collections are reproduced in this book for the first time, together with explanations as to why expressionists, cubists, futurists, and others displayed the art of children alongside their own work in exhibitions of the early twentieth century. In chapters devoted to Larionov, Kandinsky and Munter, Klee, Picasso, Miro, Dubuffet, the Cobra artists, and artists after World War II, Fineberg examines how each artist exploited aspects of child art to formulate his or her own artistic breakthroughs.

With over 170 color plates and 140 black and white illustrations, this visually compelling book will stimulate new research among art historians and will inspire museum visitors to see some of their favorite modern masterpieces in a new way.

As an art student, I personally found Fineberg's Innocent Eye highly inspirational and enlightening. Fineberg really puts his finger on the correlation and source of many modern artists expression in the visual arts. Innocent Eye is becomes successful by showing modern artists work alongside the childrens' art that inspired them. It is often difficult to tell the difference between the children's art and the highly accredited artist. A wonderful book for the first-year art student or modern art enthusiast.

i found fineberg's research in the correlation between childrens art and that of the successful artist to be quite compelling indeed. i myself often return to childish doodles and renderings to keep a fresh approach to my artistic style. fineberg should be applauded for this this excellent retrospect being applied to the modern art movement. buy it and enjoy!

There are many modern artists' works illustrated in this book I have seen for the first time. The book provided new insights into the inspiration of a number of prominent 20th Century artists. I highly recommend it.
