This book is easy to understand, and it has everything in it that a retail person needs to know in order to reduce thefts and other kinds of losses in a store. I've looked at other books, but they're too complicated. This one lays the topics out in a logical way, and the writer doesn't try to impress you with big words--just the facts!

      Book Description

Mature ecological criticism of agricultural policies is not easy: targets agreed in Biodiversity Action Plans must be achieved within a framework of agricultural and economic policies. Developing a balanced solution is the essence of sustainability. Until recently the hidden costs of high-production systems on biodiversity has been ignored. This booklet identifies some of the hidden costs of unsustainable production, and also considers examples where conservation management has failed. The authors argue that sustainable land management is possible, and that conservation and production interests can be satisfied. They go on to show how a sustainable approach can be applied throughout Europe. The approach adopted is the one that has underpinned the development of the European Union Biodiversity strategy and is becoming a compelling force for change in Europe's decision-making processes.Land managers and planners, ecologists, agriculturalists will, in particular, find this booklet an invaluable resource but it will also appeal to those with a more general interest in the issues of land management.

5 out of 5 stars An uncommon and wonderful find!!.......2001-07-11

...I used to work as a Macrobiotic chef at a little place called the Organic Cafe in Oakland. I mostly learned from other cooks and didn't really consult cookbooks too often, but then I got a brunch shift where I had to make desserts--I knew next to nothing about how to make desserts, but I got lucky in thumbing through our well-worn reference books, there was an awesome vegan cake recipe in Mary Estella's book called the "Basic Great Cake Recipe". Over the next year or so, I made so many variations on that recipe, expanding it for as many as 120 people, and it always came out so tasty and wonderful. I was always so thankful for that book (which was always there, somewhat miraculously, although I'd never seen anywhere else and we didn't sell it in our bookstore), and yet years after I left the cafe, I often regretted that I'd never written that recipe down, even though I'd often thought to do so. So, I was thrilled recently, when one day I thought to look for that book on amazon.com, that there were a couple of used copies...

4 out of 5 stars Learning and Using Natural Foods Daily.......2000-03-06

This undersung book is a precursor to many of the more "modern" natural foods cookbooks; e.g. C. Lair's "Feeding the Whole Family." But what is a treasure in this book is Mary Estella's experience both as a gourmet chef and a mother, teaching how to not only make delicious meals but how to organize and do it expeditiously. The book has beautiful photos, a practical section on cutting vegies and even how to sharpen a knife and set up a kitchen to cut and prepare foods.

Nightshades are used in the book, but can easily be eliminated from the recipes, IF desired. This is a treasure especially for those first coming into contact with whole foods. This book, coupled with Lair's book, or Rebecca Wood's "The Splendid Grain" or "Whole Food Encyclopedia" gives a firm foundation to your kitchen.

What do the new tax laws mean to you?

Keeping up with ever-changing tax rules is like trying to hit a moving target that keeps getting smaller and moving faster. Big new laws like the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 and the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 have cut taxes in many ways–none of them simple. Their tax savings–including across-the-board rate cuts, reduced capital gain and dividend taxes, larger retirement plan deductions, "marriage penalty" help, more tax-favored education-savings options, expanded alternative minimum tax relief, and estate tax reduction, to name just a few–all come at a cost of tremendously increased complexity. The rules change from year to year, phasing in and phasing out, and in most cases "sunsetting" completely after 2010. Ignoring these changes is not an option; there’s too much to lose.

How can one make sense of it all?

PricewaterhouseCoopers Guide to the New Tax Rules answers your most frequent questions about the tricky new tax laws. Using plain language everyone can understand, the trusted tax professionals at PricewaterhouseCoopers explain how the new rules affect your personal finances and how you can benefit from newly available opportunities. They outline the best ways to handle your investments, plan for your retirement, pay for your children’s education, maximize tax savings, and much more.

MAKE DOLLARS AND SENSE OF THE NEW TAX LAW!

The brand new $1.35 trillion tax relief act, which introduced hundreds of changes in United States tax law, is a hundred-page maze of detail. Let the tax experts at PricewaterhouseCoopers, the nation's largest accounting firm, lead you through the often-bewildering reforms and show you how to profit from this new law. In easy, accessible language, they will teach you the best ways to invest your money, organize your small business, save for your kids' education, plan for your retirement, and secure your future.

Starting this year, you'll benefit from sweeping changes in areas like estate tax, relief for married couples, dependent care and child tax credits, and contribution limits for retirement plans. But while the 2001 Tax Relief Act offers the largest tax cut in two decades, it creates many tricky issues for taxpayers. Inside you'll find clear answers to hundreds of questions, including:

            * Should you take advantage of the increased contribution limits to an Education IRA, even though it may hurt your chances of getting financial aid?
            * Should your new small business be a regular corporation? Or will organizing as an LLC or an S-Corporation save you money?
            * Will deferring income to a later year when rates are lower trigger the dreaded Alternative Minimum Tax?
            * Can you deem your stocks to have been sold and repurchased on January 2, 2001 to be eligible for the new super-long-term capital gains rate?
            * Can you take advantage of additional "catch-up" contributions to a qualified retirement plan?

In this comprehensive, easy-to-understand guide, the leading experts at PricewaterhouseCooper provide unique insights, savvy suggestions, and vivid examples that will help you minimize your taxes while maximizing your savings--no matter your income level!

This is an excellent book for beginners desiring to learn and apply the techniques for digital day trading. There is an electronic platform called "Superdot". Considerable analytic software exists to facilitate the trading process i.e. Trade Station, Telechart, Trade Expert Pro etc. It is essential to
craft a viable business plan. Stock selection involves a careful analysis of liquidity, volatility, sponsorship, qualitative information and price. Breakout trading techniques are important after the stock market consolidates and re-groups. Sometimes it is important to test the tops and bottoms. Lastly, it is critical to anticipate market opportunities and to ignore noise.

                  Book Description

Corporations operate under the terms of a largely unwritten, constantly changing social charter--a dictum as forceful as their written legal charter. Wilson explores the rules that are beginning to govern corporate performance, rules that arise from society's ever changing values and expectations. Provoking these changes are four formative forces: the power shift from the public to private sector; globalization; economic restructuring; and, the transforming technologies of the computer and communications revolution. The rules emerging from them will dictate higher standards and changed behavior in seven crucial areas of corporate conduct. Wilson argues that corporate social responsibility is no longer a peripheral "public relations" activity. Rather, it is an integral part of corporate strategy. Trends may seem to be running in corporations' favor, but the same trends also place greater responsibility and higher public expectations on corporations. The next decade, says Wilson, is likely to be a critical testing time for democracy, market systems, and by extension the private corporation. His book is a detailed analysis of the seven new rules and what their impact will be on U.S. and ultimately world corporations. Wilson concludes his book with a detailed agenda of needed, and workable, corporate responses to the new rules and cites the initiatives that many corporations are already taking to live by them. The seven new rules of conduct that corporations will have to observe, sooner rather than later. (1) Legitimacy: to earn and retain social legitimacy the corporation must define its mission in terms of social purpose, rather than the maximization of profit. (2) Governance: the corporation must be thought of, managed, and governed as a community of stakeholders, not as the property of investors. (3) Equity: corporations must strive to achieve greater perceived fairness in the distribution of economic wealth and the treatment of stakeholder interest. (4) Environment: corporations will have to integrate the practice of restorative economics and sustainable development into the mainstream of their business strategy (5). Employment: they must rewrite the employment contract, addressing the values of the new work force. (6) Public-Private Sector Relationships: corporations must work with governments to achieve a viable and publicly accepted redefinition of their societal roles and responsibilities. (7) Ethical Conduct: corporations will have to elevate and monitor the level of ethical performance to earn the trust which is the foundation of sound relations with stakeholder groups. Is all this impossible? Not at all says Wilson, and he documents how many of America's most successful companies are operating in whole or in part by these rules already, and how others have begun doing so with immediate positive results.

                  Book Description

Should government’s power to tax be limited? The events of the late 1970s in the wake of California’s Proposition 13 brought this question very sharply into popular focus. Whether the power to tax should be restricted, and if so how, are issues of immediate policy significance. Providing a serious analysis of these issues, the authors offer an approach to the understanding and evaluation of the fiscal system, one that yields profound implications. Fiscal arrangements are analysed in terms of the preferences of citizen-taxpayers who are permitted at some constitutional level of choice to select the fiscal institutions to which they themselves are to be subject over an uncertain future. The central question becomes: How much ‘power to tax’ would the citizen voluntarily grant to government as a party to some initial social contract devising a fiscal constitution? Those in office are assumed to exploit the power assigned to them to the maximum possible extent: government is modelled as ‘revenue-maximizing Leviathan’. Armed with such a model, the authors proceed to trace out the restrictions on the power to tax that might be expected to emerge from the citizen’s constitutional deliberations.

4 out of 5 stars Analytical framework to help understand taxpayers' revolt.......2005-03-14

Geoffrey Brennan and James M. Buchanan's The Power to Tax provides an analytical framework for understanding the so-called taxpayers' revolt of the late 1970s, when taxpayers began using referendums to enact amendments to state constitutions in order to limit taxation and hold down public spending by state legislatures. The book combines the orthodox public-finance approach with the public-choice approach to normative tax analysis. Government does not really fit the description of benevolent despot that is implicit in orthodox public-finance theory, nor can the taxpayers' revolt be explained by the median-voter model of public-choice theory. Instead, citizen-taxpayers saw government as a budget-maximizing Leviathan-like bureaucracy, whose behavior can analytically be described by the monopoly model of mainstream economics.

Traditional public-finance based normative tax analysis advises governments how to maximize revenues, or how to pluck the goose in order to obtain the most feathers with the least amount of hissing. It comes up with criteria of what it sees as efficiency and equity, such as comprehensiveness of the tax base and progression in the rate structure. Brennan & Buchanan instead adopt a different perspective: maximization of tax revenues may be in the interest of government (or, more precisely, of politicians and bureaucrats), but not of the citizen-taxpayer. The authors therefore come up with constitutional tax rules intended to constrain Leviathan. These rules are pretty much the opposite of those derived by orthodox public-finance theory, namely a non-comprehensive tax base and uniformity of tax rates (e.g. a proportional, or flat, tax).

The reason why tax limitations are to be enacted at the constitutional level is that tax limitation proposals did not emerge from the normal electorate process. Mere electoral constraints proved inadequate in limiting government to the level desired by the citizen-taxpayer. Furthermore, tax limitations are designed specifically to prevent government from taking those actions that citizens-taxpayers believe government would have taken, in spite of existing electoral constraints, in the absence of tax limitations.

In a nutshell, the book is about tax-base and tax-rate constraints. Conventional norms of tax analysis call for comprehensiveness and progression. But if you want to hold down the size of government, you do not favor comprehensiveness, and you favor uniformity of the tax rate. In short, if you want small government, you favor a flat tax with lots of deductions.

Critics of the book have charged that government is not at all times akin to a revenue-maximizing Leviathan. But, although this may be true, constraining rules such as tax limitations may serve as a "worst-case" check intended to prevent government from becoming that. This point of clarification became the basis of the authors' subsequent collaboration, The Reason of Rules, which is vol. 10 in the Buchanan Collected Works series.

The essence of The Power to Tax is also presented in two papers by the authors contained in volume 14 of Buchanan's Collected Works. I recommend that volume instead, since The Power to Tax does not really add much new insight to the analysis in those two papers.

                  Book Description

The year 1924 was a happy one for lovers of Wagner: the Bayreuth Festivals reopened (after ten years of silence) and the best teachers and artists of the time assembled to hlep Siegfried Wagner realize his father's intentions. The festivals from 1924 to 1931 also marked the early dominance of the man critic Paul Hume called, "...not the world's greatest Wagner tenor...the only one!" Almost eighty years later, Melchior's vocal achievements, still unequaled, seem to have gone beyond what is humanly possible. His son Ib, drawing from his life experience and sensitively interpreting the papers his father left, reveals to us a man who was larger than life in still another way--a man as good as he was great.

1 out of 5 stars A Slipshod, halfhearted, odd waste of paper........2004-10-16

Being a "Melchiorite," I wanted to order this book. However, I read the book carefully at the bookstore first and decided it was not worth buying because it stinks. What on earth was the point of publishing this horridly written volume?
The title "Lauritz Melchior: the Golden Years of Bayreuth" made me think this book would focus on Lauritz Melchior's performances at Bayreuth between 1924-1931, 8 summers. However, since there was no festival during two of these years, Lauritz Melchior was only performing at Bayreuth for 6 summers. There must not have been enough material to fill an entire book about only 6 summers in Lauritz Melchior's career. Anyway, this book doesn't even do those 6 summers at Bayreuth justice. The author translates a small number of quotes from Lauritz Melchior's unpublished memoirs about working with some fellow stage performers (but not the musicians or backstage people), and about the performance techniques he learned at Bayreuth from Cosima & Siegfried and so on. Little of this seems new. The author has almost nothing to say about Lauritz Melchior or anyone else at the Festival. Indeed, at least 50% of the meager text and photographs are not about Lauritz Melchior. The book divides itself into all these different directions and then some, and so it is both confusing and superficial. Furthermore, many of the photographs are reproduced as blurry digitalized scans (what you see is a bunch of white folks standing around). I learned nothing about Melchior or his colleagues from this book which I could not read about in other places.
It seems to me very odd to focus an entire book on Melchior at Bayreuth, when Lauritz Melchior was actually performing in opera and concert, and cutting records all over the US and Germany, London, Copenhagen, (Paris, Vienna, etc.?) during these same years. This book gives one little appreciation of just how mind-bogglingly busy Lauritz Melchior was during these critical years in his career before he was securely established at the Met (and even when Melchior was established at the Met he was also performing all over the world!). There is no attempt to give any social perspective here either-you wouldn't know from this book what kind of town Bayreuth was, or the liveliness of the arts scene of the roaring twenties in Germany and around the world or Melchior's observations on being a member of that scene.
This book does not offer insights into Melchior's off-stage life either. The sole aspect about Lauritz Melchior's life off-stage the author chooses to mention, and which receives disproportionate attention, is his hunting hobby. The author remains at all times on the outside surface of the singer's paradoxical personality. Another one of the author's concerns in this book- (its raison d'etre?)- is getting Chossewitz, Lauritz Melchior's former estate in Germany, back from the German government.
Conspicuously underrepresented, on the other hand, in the photographs and text is Melchior's girlfriend/wife during these years, Kleinchen, and her family. I want to see pictures of her and her family and in this book they are nearly non-existent.
The chapter entitled "The Years Before" gave me an unhappy feeling, which was sad.
In sum: Although I enjoyed a couple of the non-scanned photographs, that is not enough to make me buy a $50.00 book. I didn't hear the CD, but if I recall correctly, it contains less than 10 tracks, about 50% Melchior (transfers from Danacord's), 50% others. Someone interested in this book probably has them already.
This book is not reprehensible in the manner of the fuller authorized biography, which I would never purchase either. However, this volume is just as sloppily written as that book and even more ambivalent about its subject. The sad truth is that this book is sub par and that is a frustrating disappointment and a real shame.

                  5 out of 5 stars A worthy tribute to a great singer.......2003-09-03

The adjective "great" in unarguably invoked far too often these days and to describe mediocrity. One truly great singer was the Danish heldentenor Lauritz Melchior. It is amazing that there has been no adequate English language biography of this singer (the one that was written was amateurish at best and best left on the remainder tables). This book helps rectify the omission. Written by the singer's son, Ib Melchior (himself a noted book, film, and TV writer/producer/director), this focuses on Melchior's years (1923-31) at the Wagner Fetsival in Bayreuth where Melchior's skills as the greatest Wagnerian tenor in recording history were honed and perfected. The book is generously filled with photographs and descriptions of the times. Also included are lengthy excerpts of Melchior's own published memoirs. Melchior was serious about his art, not himself, and was never one for the tenorial "swelled head". This book mirrors that because Melchior, while the focus, is not the sole subject. Many photos and writing are about fellow artists giving a well-rounded picture of the Festival during those years. My only quibble is that this isn't a full biography of Melchior. Maybe Baskerville has one in preparation. The accompanying CD was well-planned and, like the book, includes artists besides Melchior.
                  Highly recommended.

                  5 out of 5 stars A WARM RECOLLECTION OF A GREAT SINGER.......2003-06-26

Opera aficionados will relish this warm revisiting of the years spent at Bayreuth by tenor Lauritz Melchior. Rich in photographs and anecdotal material it is a revelatory look at a time, the years 1923 - 1931, a place, and a man. It is also a warm, personal recollection as is revealed in the narrative written by his son, Ib Melchior.

As many know Bayreuth, a small town in Bavaria, is the home of the Wagner Festivals. Relatively early in his career Richard Wagner had felt the need for a theater solely for the performing of his operas. Deciding that a large city was not an appropriate site, Wagner selected this relatively unknown town for his Festspielhaus. A Patron's Association underwrote the cost of building, and the cornerstone was laid on May 22, 1872, Wagner's 59th birthday.

Following the great composer's death the Festival was overseen by his widow, Cosima, and son, Siegfried Wagner. It was for them that Mr. Melchior auditioned in 1923 as the Festival was scheduled to resume after being interrupted by the war.

It has been said that following Mr. Melchior's singing Siegfried consulted with his mother, and then simply said, "Mother likes you."

Thus began a benchmark period in the artist's career. He was to spend several hours each day under the tutelage of famed voice coach Karl Kittel, and from Cosima he gained insights into the Wagner characters. With unparalleled thoroughness she even gave him acting instructions concerning the body, the face, and the eyes, which she called "mirrors of the soul."

Among the many friendships developed during the Bayreuth years was one with Siegfried's wife, Winifred, who had great admiration for Adolf Hitler. Nonetheless, at that time Hitler received scant attention from others at Bayreuth.

Surely the thought never occurred to Mr. Melchior that some 8 years later, following Siegfried's death, the atmosphere in Bayreuth would be dramatically altered.. Hitler moved into Siegfried's rooms, and his brown shirted troopers overran the small town. The tenor would leave Bayreuth not to return.

Nonetheless, during those "Golden Years" glorious operas were performed - Parsifal, Die Walkure, Siegfried, and more. In addition, lifelong friendships were forged as steins were hoisted.. It is a never-to-be-forgotten period in the archives of music history.

What of the man who is called one of the greatest heroic tenors of all time? He quickly took to Lederhosen, wearing them whenever possible. Music was his metier, hunting his passion. He had an irrepressible sense of humor, which is evidenced in the MGM films he later made. He was more than generous to his fellow performers, and genuinely loved mankind.

Lauritz Melchior: The Golden Years of Bayreuth is enriched by over 315 never before published photographs, and notes from Mr. Melchior's journals. A volume to be prized, it is apt tribute to the man called "...not the world's greatest Wagner tenor...the only one!"

Hartl's story of her "crazy" father is as frightening as it is original. I agree with the previous comment that the book could use a good editing, but also must say that this story should be read by manic-depressives everywhere. --chris palmer, author of VOICES BEYOND THE STREAM

The story is compelling enough. Grammar problems and repetition make for a bit of a problem at times. The editor must have been on vacation. The author also makes a generalizing mistake in the end, yes, her father is mentally ill and violent, but not all mentally ill are violent...There definitly is a problem when someone like her father gets released time and again with no help, but that doesn't mean we should throw away the key with all mentally ill people.
