When you need help figuring out how to dial a phone number in another country, what goes on which lines of an address, or how to find the physical location in a foreign city corresponding to a mailing address, this is the book to look for in the library. I wish I had read this book sooner. By the time I found it, I didn't need it, having learned its lessons by sometimes-painful and costly experience. Be sure to read the introductory chapters on "How to Get Phone Calls and Faxes Through" and "How to Make Your English More Understandable" to nonnative speakers, before you leave home. Gives detailed information on address, telephone, etc. formats only for selected countries, mostly First World, but notes correctly that, "An awareness of the terminology and practices in these countries will help you understand those in many others." I hope that future editions will expand coverage of the more populous or often-visited countries in the rest of the world. Most travelers probably won't find it worth buying, but every library and every office that ever does international business should have a copy. If yours doesn't, get them to buy it.

Yes, this book is a guide. But it is not a guide to international business communications. It describes how to write the international addresses very deeply. It might be a helpful book to a secretary who writes addresses to envelopes. But it won't help to any businessman at all. Merriam-Webster do not deserve this "one star" rating. The rating is there for amazon.com. Because the information about the book was quite open to misunderstand the content and I had to return the book.

Managable!.......2002-12-06

This new book offers something different to other Managerial Economics Textbooks that I have seen. For a start it is a shorter book than others like Mcguigan et al. Secondly, it looks and feels like a textbook, but it also is a remarkably good book to read - I read through several chapters on the train. Thirdly, it brings a completely new approach with it - that of Game Theory. Anyone who's been alive for the last few years will realise just how important Game Theory is in Business and Economics, and the deployment of it in a book on managerial economics is a master stroke.

Personally I have found it to be a breath of fresh air in comparison to its competitors, and I would say to anyone teaching, studying or just intererested in Managerial Economics - read this book!

The best place to go for Hanson information.......2000-12-16

I had to order this book from Borders because I ordered it in July, 2000. I received it the day before the Hanson concert in Tulsa. Yes, I was at the kick off concert for the "This Time Around" tour. It wasn't, at all, easy to get tickets to the Tulsa one, but I did it. I also went to the Norman, OK one the day after Zac's 15th b-day. They were both excellent. The Norman one was much better than the Tulsa one. In just 3 months time their concerts had changed a lot. Definitely for the better. Just as they've improved in their live shows, their albums keep getting better and better. I loved this book for the pure reason that it's Official. They're friends with the author and they had imput on it. All of the other books, you never know. If only, these other authors actually had imput by Hanson, not to mention, permission. Oh, FYI, I'm nowhere near being a teeny bopper. I'm 29. Yes, I live in Tulsa. No, I've never met them. The question that people ask me the most is "Why do you like Hanson?" I just say, "They're the real thing." What you see is what you get. There's no hidden motive. That doesn't happen often, in this world. Needless to say, I read the book the day that I got it. I couldn't put it down until it was done. There's so much to learn and so little time.

The BEST Hanson book.......2000-08-06

Who wants to know the true story about how Hanson became who they are today? This book is the best way to teach you, written by Jarod Gollihare, who is a friend of theirs. It is a GREAT book, leading you through their love and devotion to music and what it took for them to reach the top. The book is well written and truthful, as well as exciting to read and full of very nice pictures. I absolutely recommend it!

This book definately is a recommendee. It has the truth and nothing but. The photography is fantastic and the pictures blend well with the quotes and stories. Though there are not seperate chapters for each of the brothers, the group facts are enough to make up for it. Great job, Mr. Gollihare, for capturing the true blue Hanson.

GOOD HANSON BOOK.......1999-04-09

I thought Jarrod did a good job with this book, a lot of it was vague but it was informative and at least with this book that the information is true unlike the slew of unnoficial teenybopper biographies out there. I would suggest however, for serious Hanson fans looking for more information to purchase Ravi's "Dancin' With Hanson." It includes a lot of specific information, including good and bad things.

Early History of Thomas Edison and his inventions.......2006-01-25

This is a fascinating history of Thomas A. Edison focused on his inventions. Aimed at the moderately to well-educated reader of the time, the book gives a brief history of the inventor and then details all of his early inventions: the quadruplex, phonograph, toddygraph, electric pen, telephone, megaphone, tasimeter, harmonic engine and the electric light. Of interest is the fact that the book was published in May of 1879 several months prior to the complete electric light breakthrough of 1880-1882. Therefore, it is not surprising that the author considers his earlier inventions much more thoroughly than electric light. There is a first-person quote from a visitor to the Edison laboratory describing what electric light looks like (remember that most of the readers of the book would not yet have been exposed to the concepts). The book contains wonderful detailed lithographs of the inventions and some circuit drawings.

Bottom Line: Great piece of early Edison history reminding us that Edison was a great inventor long before the light bulb.

This book is fine for what it is, but it consists merely of a reprint of the original text. None of the original figures or illustrations are included, and these are an integral part of the book.

It is quite a shame, that this facsimile is so badly made. The pictures are really bad reproduced and why is it, that page 117 is not there. Instead page 113 is shown one more time. And in several places the text is distorted from the scanning.

shameless or blind.......2003-07-17

Glorifying and corny. Unconditional praise of Edison achievements. Though the authors are clearly well-read, too many facts are ignored in the account of the circumnstances that lead Edison to the accumulation of patents. Lacks any critic view and end up creating an image of an "american hero" that is as ridiculous as untruth. I quote, just as an example, "In fact, if it were not for Edison's peculiar mentality, that refuses to recognize anything as impossible until indubitably demonstrated to be so, the production of motion pictures would certainly have been delayed for years, if not for all time."
Anyone seriously interested on the subject of the birht of cinema would recognize this as total nonsense or shameless manipulation of facts.
A book to avoid by anyone interested in having a truthfull and independent view on history.

The invention of the first light bulb inaugurated a new age for man: Electricity. Just as Edison had to create the tools to make the first bulb, he had to create the industry to use it. He did, and in doing so he assembled the first research laboratory and gathered around him a collection of great minds -- a rich assortment of men with varying talents.

An interesting look at small and effective successes.......2002-12-29

This book is a product of the Internet boom / bubble and not all of these seb businesses have survived. However, a surprising number have. Some were sold while others evolved one way or the other. It is quite an interesting to read about how these businesses viewed their markets at the height of the boom and then look at how things are today.

I think the book has a couple of good points to make. These sites were not funded by huge amounts of venture capital. They are all small sites that have done well for people who had a specific expertise, who thought small in a tightly focused way, and who used the web to broaden their reach to a proven client base.

There are thousands of successful sites just like these and this type of thing can be done thousands of more times by intelligent business people. My advice, however, is that unless you really KNOW what your plan and goals are, don't spend your hard earned cash until you are certain you have minimized your uncertainties. Of course, to be an entrepreneur is to have more risk than regular folks are willing to take on. But spend more time getting ready and learning your business rather than recklessly diving in head first to see how deep the pond is. If you don't you could end up spending a lot of money on a website that will be nothing but a drain on your precious cash and time.

When chosen a Commissioner to France, Adams was reluctant to go. But duty and the honor of the position, along with the encouragement of an understanding and self-sacrificing wife, persuaded him to accept. With son John Quincy for a companion, he crossed the Atlantic to a new career. His initiation into the complexities of diplomacy brought a growing awareness of' European affairs and the problems facing the new nation in the diplomatic arena. Letters deal with such varied topics as the supervision of American commercial agents in French ports, regulation of privateers, settlement of disputes between crews and officers, negotiation of loans, and help for American prisoners in England. Personal letters run the gamut from Adams' views on the proper conduct of American diplomacy to strangers' pleas for aid in locating relatives in America. Contrary to the usual impression of Adams as little more than a clerk for the Commission, evidence shows that he was its chief administrator.

Poor people are among the most vulnerable when a country is hit by a shock such as a macroeconomic crisis or a natural disaster. In Latin America, the poor have been buffeted by a series of shocks over the past 20 years that have reduced incomes and exacerbated persistent and chronic poverty in the region.

Social Protection for Equity and Growth provides policy recommendations to reduce the economic vulnerability of the poor to adverse shocks and help them cope with downturns in income. Social protection refers to public interventions -- including labor market measures, social safety nets, pension systems and calamity funds -- that can lessen the impact of these sudden events. They target persons with precarious employment conditions or limited access to social security or other insurance systems, as well as the elderly and disabled. Often living at or near the subsistence level, these groups generally lack the economic or political power to push for policies that respond to their needs during times of crisis.

The book argues that assisting and insuring those in need boosts a country's economic efficiency by reducing the exposure of the poor to economic risk and enabling them to participate in economic activities with higher returns.

The book provides policy recommendations to reduce the economic vulnerability of the poor to adverse shocks and help them cope with income downturns.
