3 out of 5 stars The Hours and the Minutes.......2005-10-17

Gene Fowler, who died in 1960, was one of the last of the Mohicans you might say. He and his friends, who were mostly quite a bit older than he was, were heavy-drinking Los Angeles newsmen and entertainers. Among them was the enigmatic artist Sadakichi Hartmann, an American modernist whose accomplishments are still far from understood, mostly because of memoirs like Fowler's which present him as a charismatic, drunken weirdo but don't go out of their way to talk about their art. It was as if friendship was a code for Fowler, one that precluded any serious discussion of art. As he writes in MINUTES OF THE LAST MEETING:

"If I were to apologize for W.C. Fields, or for any other member of our group for that matter, or attempt to justify his or their wayward actions, their shades would cry out with indignation. False praise is the province of the epitaph-maker and is best done with a chisel on a stone seldom visited. I needed no pretext to like these men, nor they me. They were not hypocrites; they never changed character; and at bottom they were men, every one of them to the end."

When one of them died, the others smuggled his body out of the funeral parlor and sat him at the dinner table to scare the wits out of another member of the group! They were a hard drinking fraternity, and some of their pranks seem funny only in retrospect. John Barrymore, W C Fields, Errol Flynn and the painter John Decker were among them. Movies like ANIMAL HOUSE, OLD SCHOOL, or PCU were inspired by their lifestyle. It's for hedonists and men who don't care about anything else but drinking and fun. Or maybe they do, Fowler suggests, admitting that he was rarely able to penetrate the carefree, surreal facades of his Hollywood chums.

It's the saddest story, but Fowler just wants you to admire them. Thus, I would rank this book only a half a success, at best.

I loved this book, however some of the pages were unprinted. I would like to send it back to you for a complete one. I have dogeared the missing pages. Please advise.

5 out of 5 stars Complex lives tied up in Fowler's Knots.......1998-12-03

Life at John Decker's Studio/home on Bundy Drive in Brentwood, CA. in the late thirties and forties and the men who gathered there. Reminiscences of the poet Sadakichi Hartmann, around whose life the story is wrapped, John Barrymore, the host, artist John Decker and WC Fields as they gather with a supporting cast at Decker's Studio at the end of their lives. Rude, urbane, witty, vicious, caustic, loyal, intrepid, and hard living, these men make for a fascinating read written by one who gathered with them at the last meetings. Fowler was one of the best writers of his age and his intimacy with the subjects is evident in the affection and respect he affords his subjects. Not blind to their faults, a well rounded picture emerges of an age, place, and people that no longer exist; and if you believe Fowler, mores the pity. Tragedy and triumph are talentedly wrapped up in this reminiscence of Hollywood in the Golden Era.

5 out of 5 stars A must for classic movie buffs........1998-01-25

As an old movie buff, and in awe of those grand stars of yesteryear; in the glamourous days of Hollywood, with particular interest in W. C. Fields - this book was amusing, hilarous, and exposing. It is a narrative (minutes) of meetings being held between those glorious drinking buddies, Fields, Barrymore, Fairbanks (and others) by Fowler, a member of that exclusive group, whose purpose never quite got off the ground. If you love a taste of nostalgia, this a candid shot of the era. I had an autographed copy, and it got lost in the years of loaning. I would love to find my copy, but just a copy of it would be great again.

        4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-04-02

Let's get one thing out of the way: This is not a book about how to conduct last-minute meetings. It is a book about organizing conferences, conventions and other off-site gatherings that involve extensive planning - and preferably not at the last minute. That said, it's a useful book. Fern Dickey provides exactly the kinds of hands-on details that a virgin conference organizer would need, from online resources to relevant organizations, contact information, and sample charts that you can use for record keeping, budgeting and planning. There's nothing groundbreaking here, and there are no secret tactics revealed. Instead, Dickey has produced a thorough working reference that we [...] recommend to anyone new to the dizzying world of conference planning.

5 out of 5 stars A Wealth of Information Packed into This Book!.......2000-12-13

Fern Dickey has written a top-notch book on meeting planning. The small consulting company I work for was planning an out of state seminar with a few speakers. Although the engagement was cancelled, we had already made many of the arrangements. After reading Dickey's book I realize all of the details we left out: travel details, hotel contract details, and speaker contract details, just to name a few. (If we even had contracts!?) Her book offers a wealth of knowledge on how to run an efficient, effective meeting, and protect your budget. The book is well organized ; you can easily jump to the section you're most interested in and her style of writing is casual. Fern Dickey is like your friend giving advice and sharing knowledge over a glass of wine. She includes numerous web sites and contact numbers for more information to help you plan your meeting. Whether it's a last minute meeting or not, I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Great way to duplicate meals from these restaurants at home.......2007-02-05

This is a cookbook with a simple mission-to let diners at Mainstreet Ventures Corporation's restaurants- which include The Chop House, Real Seafood, Tidewater Grill, Blue Pointe in Fort Myers, and Gratzi-cook some of their favorite restaurant meals at home.

I've had pleasant seafood served at Real Seafood, and have not tried the other branches of the restaurant chain.

The recipes are generally easy to prepare (and there are some more involved ones as well). Instructions are straightforward and clear. Best part is, nearly all recipes have a corresponding full page color photo of the finished dish, so it's quite easy to approximate your restaurant meal at home. Bear in mind, however that most restaurants are supplied with prime grade meats, quite fresh seafood and vegetables that are often a cut above what a local grocery store may carry. Do not hesitate at trying any of these recipes. When I choose to cook, say, salmon for dinner, and my fishmonger suggests haddock that day, then haddock it will be- so ask, and let your supplier guide you to what is freshest!

While I like to dry my scallops and sear them quickly over high heat on both sides, leaving them barely cooked in the center, they broil them for 2-3 minutes till golden brown on top, and opaque in the center. Not a big difference, and more importantly this and all recipes are designed to approximate their restaurant dishes. The Beurre Blanc sauce is pretty standard, and directions are clear. I didn't find any typos or inappropriate amounts of ingredients after looking at quite a few recipes. Many persons seem to have proofed this book before it was printed.

While it will not win James Beard's or other major awards for the recipes, it's sure to find a spot with a home chef that likes the fairly uncomplicated cuisine at these chain restaurants. For those who have not visited the restaurants, it's still a cookbook worth looking at. If there's a handful or two of recipes that look cookable to you, then the book is probably a good buy.

In The Roaring 2000s, America's favorite optimist, Harry S. Dent Jr., makes the case that demographics drive all economic activity and that, thanks to the current baby boom, we're set for one whale of a good time over the next 10 years. In The Roaring 2000s Investor, Dent shows how to cash in on this boom, then prepare for the worst when the downturn finally hits in the latter part of the decade. Dent believes that the best investment opportunities exist in the stock market--specifically technology, financial services, health care, and leisure stocks. But watch out after 2008, because that's when he thinks the bottom falls out. For these tough times, Dent recommends a shift away from stocks to out-of-favor investments such as bonds and commercial real estate.

In addition to investment information, Dent includes a good dose of living advice. He counsels not to be the millionaire next-door, counting change in a darkened living room while the greatest economic boom in history roars past. He writes, "Life should be interesting; investment and financial plan should be boring." Dent's prescription: Understand what drives the economy, then get a financial advisor and learn to enjoy life. Other subjects he touches on include asset allocation, international investing, and tax planning. Some might find Dent's reliance on demographics as an economic barometer a bit too simplistic. But for others, The Roaring 2000s Investor just might be the perfect framework for building an investment strategy into the next millennium. --Harry C. Edwards

5 out of 5 stars Population growth has been accelerating since World War II, prosperity increasing, and the growth will continue for decades........2006-01-19

Population growth affects every trend in the economy: earnings and spending, saving and borrowing, inflation and deflation, innovation and abandonment is driven by the predictable age of new generations of consumers and workers. New generations come in waves every 40 years. The baby boomers massive savings will elevate the stock market to new heights. Bet on predictable savings, saving trends, and the following sector-profits (technology, financial services, health care, and travel and leisure). The most import forecasting tool for our economy is the spending wave, it predicts the booms and bust, it predictions extend five years in advance. The baby boomer spending and productivity demonstrate higher trends into 2008-2009 and assuming 16% growth the DOW will be 40,000 meaning wealth doubles every 4 ½ years.

As, the new generation population peak productivity and consumption causes an economic burst, reduces inflation, and innovation investments produce new technologies. The 80-year cycle starts the new generations birth, college education in the first part of the curve, at 46.5 years of age increases in spending and productive peak, at 58 years of age increases in investment power business revolutions, and at 68 years of age increases in savings investments boast financial institutions offering fixed asset securities.

Each new generation burst on the economy with radically new technologies, one such technology is networks predicted to extend penetration from 1994 - 2025 and the baby boomer generation spending increases started around 2002 and will continue until 2008-2009. The 80 year cycle will shift from a standardized economy to a customized economy with more personalized services and products. Every 500 years there is a population explosion, characterized by 4 fold increases in population and we are in one of these 500 year cycles. The population explosion drives large innovation cycles. The information revolution or innovation is just starting to emerge. The current bull market will continue into 2008, experience deflationary pressure in 2009 and continue to struggle until 2022-2023, a stock crash probable in 2014.

New workers entering the workforce, as they become more productive cause inflation to go down. In the early stages the market see the entrance of a population mass of rebellious and innovative new young people, whose rising expenses spark increased social and technological innovations requiring massive investment in the new infrastructure. Expect inflation. As this group ages into productivity, consumer spending increases, spending stimulates growth, inflation falls, and quality of life improves. Countries like India, South East Asia, and the Middle East are experiencing the new generation affect. The fed has little or nothing to do with the market trends and its resulting inflation. The fed is left to react too the greater forces of population trends. The wealth affect will continue to expand into Europe, Australia, New Zealand and strong growth in Asia like Japan, China, S Korea, and Latin America will offset domestic decline, stock crashes, and deflation.

5 out of 5 stars Best Summary of How to Apply Demographics to Your Life.......2004-09-10

Peter Drucker has been teaching the importance of demographics to business people and investors for decades. In all this time, only Harry S. Dent, Jr. has created a practical look at the implications of demographics for each of us. In creating this book, he has moved well beyond his earlier work, and created information that each person must have. For a popular book, this is written in a way that makes it very accessible and easy to use. I highly recommend that you get this book, read it, and refer to the many wonderful summary graphs daily to remind you what questions to ask yourself about how demographics will affect your life, business, and investments. I look forward to reading future books from Mr. Dent.

As you will notice when you read the book, demographics is not fate . . . so economies do vary from what their potential is. Pay attention to the thought process rather than the conclusions.

1 out of 5 stars How this guy ever got published is a lesson in itself..........2004-07-06

I read this book back in 2000 before the crash and agreed with
some of his reasoning as to the mechanics and ideas which would be implemented in the New Millenium, but disagreed with his
belief that there would be such great prosperity,as history ALWAYS repeats itself.
But alas, no one wants a pessimist. Then he came out with the "Roaring 2000's Investor", which again was creative and showed brilliance, but proved to by flawed on many levels. Now he has another book slated to come out

"The Greatest Bull Market in History: 2003-2008: Investment, Business and Life Strategies - For the Great Boom Ahead and the Great Bust to Follow"

If his past predictions are any indication, this title itself is already filled with hindsight and error. I can tell you there will be no sustainable bull market on any of the indexes for at least the next decade.

I must admit I would like to speak with this guy. With a few real life experiences under his belt he may really hit the target, but so far the best title for a book would be "The Roaring 2000's: How to prosper by making the best seller list by publishing books that make people believe you have the answers."

Lession #1: Don't put dates in the titles of your books that try to predict the future"

1 out of 5 stars Unfortunately Harry Dent is Wrong But There Is Hope.......2002-12-01

In late 1999 the stock market was in a hey day. I would walk into work in the morning and my supervisor would say to me, "Ron, your stock is already up three points!" Then I came across this book by Harry Dent, and I showed it to some co-workers. At the time, this book seemed to be a revelation to us.
In the early 90s, Harry Dent predicted that in the late 90s, the stock market would hit 10,000, and we would have low inflation and low unemployment. That indeed happended, so it seemed reasonable to listen to his further prognostications. In this book, he predicts that the DOw would hit 40,000 in the year 2007, followed by a sharp bear market that would last for about 10 years.
What was his basis for predicting this? Well, lets call it the "birthrate theory." Harry Dent took a chart of birthrates, shifted it by about 44 years, and saw that this chart had a strong correlation with the ups and downs of the economy and the stock market. Why shift the birth rate chart 44 years? Because that is the age by and large where people reach their peak in earning and spending. They have reached maximum productivity--they are old enough to have learned what needs learning, and young enough before the natural decline of aging. So basically, when the group of those around 44 years old increases, so goes the theory, the stock market and the economy goes up, and when the group of those around 44 years old decreases, the market and economy is in decline. Thus that "baby boom generation" when they entered their 40s, fueled the market and economic surge of the 80s and 90s. An interesting point to be made concerning Dent's interpretaion of this data is that while people conventioanlly start the "baby boom generation" from 1945, Dent starts it a couple of years earlier, and I do think he is right, the increase in birthrates started earlier than 1945.
One objection to Dent's theory that has been made--by Dr. Shiller who wrote "Irrational Exuberance"--is that why did not this demographic birthrate theory affect other asset classes, like real estate. A reply to this objection from the basis of the birthrate theory is that it has but in a different way--that since people buy homes generally when they are in thier 20s and 30s, then you should shift the bithrate chart around 30 years for real estate. And this seems to be confirmed by the experience of the 1970s, when real estates values went up when the baby boom generation was in the 20s and 30s.
A devasting objection to Dent's theory, however, is that is has been for all intents and purposes been falsified. For the market to reach 40,000 in the year 2007 from this point today, the market would have TO HAVE AN ANNUAL RATE OF RETURN OF AT LEAST 25 PERCENT FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. The odds of that happening are astronomical and has no precedent in stock market history.
Dent had a chart showing the rates of return of the market by decade. He pointed out that while there has been two consecutive decades of above average market returns (for example, the 50s and 60s, and the 80s and 90s) there has never been THREE CONSECUTIVE decades of above average returns--but the exeception would be this time. Dent should have stuck with the decade analysis.
So it looks like that the period of 2000-2010 will be a decade of below average returns for the stock market, comparable to the 30s and the 70s.
This book has some value in that it can get one to think in broader historical terms about the markets. Part of the title of this review/essay is "but there is hope." As the decade analysis of the market shows, bear markets do not last forever, though they may last a decade, and then they are followed by bull markets. SO perhaps around the year 2010 a new bull market will begin and it would be a good time to be invested.
If one is interested in good investment advice, I have been following Bob Brinker lately. He has a radio show about investing heard on stations around the country. In early 2000 he told his listeners to get out of the NASDAQ and the market; Brinker was right in calling the top. He has not yet gone back into the market--thus avoiding terrible declines for his followers. Mr. Brinker, against the academic view, thinks he can "time" the market, and believes that one can make money on rallies in the general bear makret. He has not, at this time, yet given a signal when this "counter-cyclical" rally in the bear market will occur. Stay tuned.

                        4 out of 5 stars Got Hope?.......2002-07-01

Harry Dent is a bull. Hands down, gotta-own-stocks, Katie-bar-the-door bull.

If you need a shot of confidence in your battered portfolio this book will give it to you.

Dent has the economic research, the demographic data, market insights, and statistical modelling to build a very persuasive case for equities over the next 6 1/2 years, until 2009.

Be careful of the sectors you are in and keep an eye on your allocation, he warns. The markets will shift dramtically down the road. I read his book today and will be changing my asset allocation tomorrow.

Harry S. Dent makes a strong case to be bullish.

I would have liked to read a more current introduction from him in light of market and economic developments over the past two years, but his basic story has remained, largely, unchanged. 4 Stars.

Harry S. Dent, a Harvard Business School graduate, predicted the rise of the Dow when others preached pessimism and despair. For those familiar with THE GREAT BOOM AHEAD and THE ROARING 2000S, you know that Dent backs up his optimism with data. In THE ROARING 2000S, Investor Dent urges individuals to seek financial advice from a professional and come up with a plan that fits their specific needs and goals. His investment of choice at present is the stock market, with technology, health care, financial services and leisure stocks being the best bets. Citing demographics, Dent predicts more good news. Baby boomers entering their peak earning years should translate into prosperity until about 2008. Then comes the dive, which is okay, too, if you've gotten out of the market in time and into bonds and commercial real estate. In other words, pay attention and be prepared. Dent is a cheerful reader, and he speaks with the authority of a man with a track record. M.D.B.

By watching the local business press, working with regional brokerages, and keeping an ear cocked at cocktail parties, Rubino believes that small investors can exploit inefficiencies in the financial markets, where institutions increasingly overlook all but the largest stocks and the fashionable industries of the moment.

                                    Book Description

Poised at a strategic point in the emergence of modern America, Theodore Roosevelt entered the White House just as the twentieth century opened. Following a succession of weak presidents who proved themselves incapable of dealing seriously with the novel problems and responsibilities created by industrialization within the country and by imperialism in the world outside its boundaries, Roosevelt was uniquely qualified by training and personality to reverse the trend. His patrician background, his education, and his grasp of the national and international situations set him apart from the men he succeeded in Washington. His vigorous, colorful, forceful personality attracted widespread public attention and deep affection. As a result, he was able to face problems that his predecessors had avoided. In matters like labor and conservation, Roosevelt established fruitful precedents for the country. In others, diplomacy for instance, he made false starts. But in any case, he illuminated the questions with which his successors would have to deal. Legend, or near legend, Roosevelt dominated an era in American life. An examination of his multiple careers throws light on the problems of transition of the U.S. from the nineteenth to the twentieth century.

                                      Book Description

Theodore Roosevelt and World Order presents a new understanding of TR’s political philosophy while shedding light on some of today’s most vexing foreign policy dilemmas. Most know that Roosevelt served as New York police commissioner during the 1890s, warring on crime while sponsoring reforms that reflected his good-government convictions. Later Roosevelt became an accomplished diplomat. Yet it has escaped attention that TR’s perspectives on domestic and foreign affairs fused under the legal concept of “police power.”

This gap in our understanding of Roosevelt’s career deserves to be filled. Why? TR is strikingly relevant to our own age. His era shares many features with that of the twenty-first century, notably growing economic interdependence, failed states unable or unwilling to discharge their sovereign responsibilities, and terrorism from an international anarchist movement that felled Roosevelt’s predecessor, William McKinley. Roosevelt exercised his concept of police power to manage the newly acquired Philippines and Cuba, to promote Panama’s independence from Colombia, and to defuse international crises in Venezuela and Morocco. Since the end of the Cold War, and especially in the post–9/11 era, American statesmen and academics have been grappling with the problem of how to buoy up world order. While not all of Roosevelt’s philosophy is applicable to today’s world, this book provides useful historical examples of international intervention and a powerful analytical tool for understanding how a great power should respond to world events.

"A brilliant book in this competitive market. . . . an excellent synthesis of the history of the United States from Theodore Roosevelt's succession to the Presidency in 1901 to Franklin D. Roosevelt's death in 1945 or, actually, the end of the war in the Pacific. . . . [It] reads well and has a compelling fascination."
--Francis M. Carroll, co-author of The Free and the Unfree

A lively tour of the United States in the first half of the twentieth century, America Ascendant traces the development of America's tremendous industrial power and its commercial deployment, at home and abroad. Emphasizing the contributions of those charismatic presidents who shaped the future of politics-- Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt--the book also covers pioneers such as Henry Ford and the Wright brothers, whose technological contributions transformed societies the world over.

The book investigates the phenomena that threatened America's ascendance--the Great Red Scare of 1917- 20 and the rout of organized labor, the Great Crash of 1929 and the searing depression years, and the apartheid policies that undermined American democratic ideals. Moreover, Sean Dennis Cashman sets the American story within the dramatic context of the rise and fall of political empires in Europe and Asia and two devastating world wars. Enriching the volume is an integrated account of the American cultural scene, replete with such figures as Ernest Hemingway, Frank Lloyd Wright, George Gershwin, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Charlie Chaplin, and D. W. Griffith.

Imaginatively conceived, America Ascendant once again reveals Sean Dennis Cashman's flair for bringing American history to life with all its triumphs, drama, and ambiguities.

                                          Book Description

Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson were remarkable statesmen, early twentieth century "artists of power" whose diplomacy has had an enduring impact on U.S. foreign policy. These two leaders were creative, farsighted diplomatists who confronted serious international challenges during their presidencies, and who conceived and implemented policies designed both to resolve immediate problems and to set the United States on the best possible course for the future. Crafted by prominent historians, the eight chapters of this volume implicitly and explicitly urge students of history to recognize that both Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson were intelligent, insightful, forward-looking statesmen, and that since World War II the influence of their ideas and approaches on U.S. diplomacy has been ongoing and significant. Chapters 1 through 3 cover Theodore Roosevelt's strategic thinking, personal diplomatic style, and his relationship with Britain. Chapters 4 through 6 examine Woodrow Wilson's interaction with his senior foreign policy advisors, and analyze his decision-making leading up to the U.S.'s entry into World War I. Two concluding chapters, 7 and 8, show how the two men made the United States both a world power and the architect of twentieth century world order. With an introduction by Charles E. Neu and Afterword by William Tilchin.

This Biography of Roosevelt is highly recommended! It offers a good exploration of the Presidential years and the political moves any President must balance when dealing with the Senate, parties, etc. It also deals with the shaping of the man before the Presidency without overwhealming the coverage of his administration. Miller's bio. focused far too much on his personal life and left you wondering what really happened during his White House years. Harbaugh balances the two areas expertly, and leaves the reader with a complete understanding of both.

                                          5 out of 5 stars Great biography!.......2001-11-23

This biography is highly praised by Roosevelt buffs because it is precise, complete and well balanced. It is in the same league as the Edmund Morris books and Nathan Millers fine work on Theodore Roosevelt.

This history is educational concerning TR's political and personal life. However, the writing is fairly dry and it is not very inspiring.

Moonrise is a heartrending memoir about Penny Wolfson's family, her son Ansel (now seventeen years old), and his pro-gressive disability, caused by the genetic disease Duchenne muscular dystrophy. For more than a hundred years after the French neurologist G.A.B. Duchenne first described this devasta-ting dis-order, research had produced few answers about the origin or the cure. But between the end of 1986 and the be-ginning of 1988-just before Ansel's diagnosis-the Duchenne gene was isolated and sequenced, and accurate prenatal testing became available. As Wolfson traces her son's development and the impact of his disability on her world view, questions about the disease-causing mutation persist: What does knowledge of the self on a molecular level mean? Is genetic self-knowledge our goal now, just as knowledge of the psyche was in the last century? Moonrise is an essential contribution to the dialogue about genetics, as well as a deeply moving story about a remarkable child and his family.

This book should appeal to readers who value the hard, loving truth-telling ability of the author, the mother of Ansel, a child with muscular dystrophy. I first read her essay of the same name in Best American Essays, and the book delivered a more edgy, tough potrait of the family. Admirable, credible, and hopeful, the mother is one tough customer, and so is her son. That is the key to surviving and thriving despite the woes of this debilitating, chronic illness. Ansel and his mom (and dad, and siblings) are a real family, in the best sense of the word.

...I was curious and did read it. And I am very glad that I did. You are a very strong person and have been both a great mother and great friend for Ansel. I was touched and moved by how honestly you expressed your ongoing thoughts and feelings towards the disease and the struggle to deal with it as a mother, a wife and a friend. Indeed it is sad that Ansel or anyone for that matter has to suffer such an illness in life, but not everyone is as lucky to have a mother as strong, defiant and loyal as you, who has such a powerful means of expressing herself through writing. Your whole family must be very proud of you, especially Ansel. I am also impressed by your observations and descriptions of Ansel and how brave and strong he has been all of his life....Ansel is an optimistic skeptic, and brave at that (his will not to give up, I noticed, was something he inherited from you). Many of us, including myself, can learn from someone like him. And in the words of Ansel, "everything happens for a reason."

Moonrise is a powerful book, beautifully written, full of forceful oppositions-health and disability, despair and joy, science and poetry. Were it a writer's imagined construct, it might be considered too calculated, too balanced between the life forces we control and those that control us. However, Moonrise is not a novel, rather a book that recalls the truism that life can be stranger than fiction. Penny Wolfson has written from the depths of her own experience a perfect parable, an inspiring story of the life of her son Ansel, rich in humor, strikingly full of unnerving Dantean imagery, and imbued with tremendous pathos. Though ostensibly concerned with Duchenne's muscular dystrophy, Moonrise is actually a story about the condition of life and its inherent struggles, speaks to anyone who ponders the eternal mysteries of why we live and how we live. In addition to describing the sobering details of genetic determinism and the wrenching realities of watching a child's body degenerate, Wolfson analyses and celebrates family and all its myriad complexities.

5 out of 5 stars a good book for all ages (exept maybe little kids).......2003-03-14

let me let you know, take me seriously with the stars, I really love the book. Penny sounds like someone very kind to everyone and everything, she treats everyone the right way. I still think you won't take me seriously, but you're probably right ignoring me.

                                              5 out of 5 stars Beautiful writing.......2003-03-07

This book starts out more like a mystery or spy novel than the memoir it is. We are first introduced to the author, her husband and baby in a poetic first chapter. Next we are introduced to the "villain" (which turns out to be the genetic disease muscular dystrophy) only later to find out that it is not only slowly killing her beautiful child Ansel, but is also hiding inside her newly pregnant sister! We are then led through various vignettes where she describes her son's diagnosis, various treatments, and his transformation from an unusually attractive baby into a disabled child. Wolfson also describes her quest to understand the genetics of this disease where she not only gains insight into its biochemistry but also into the complicated history and dynamics of her own family. As the book concludes we find yet another transformation of Ansel from a troublesome disabled child to a quirky, intellectually gifted teenager. When I got to the end of the book I wanted another chapter to tell me what happens next to this remarkable mother and son. I was left feeling very moved, not with pity but with admiration. Talk about turning a bunch of lemons into lemonade! Anyone with chronic disease lurking in their family (and who doesn't) has got to read this book.
