    Book Description

"Multicultural Counseling Competence represents the next giant step toward implementing multicultural standards into the counseling profession. Logically organized and with a list of impressive contributors, . . . this book not only is well grounded in theory and research but is a practical guide to how graduate schools of counseling, clinical psychology, social work, and other helping professions might infuse multicultural competence into their faculty and students, curriculum, field work, and supervision. . . . The editors have made a major substantive contribution to the counseling profession with this text. They have accepted the challenge of cultural diversity and are serving the roles of pioneers in seeking both individual and institutional multicultural competence." --from the Foreword by Derald Wing Sue Professional associations such as the American Psychological Association and the American Counseling Association are beginning to mandate cultural counseling competencies in their ethical guidelines. That is, counselors who work with ethnically, linguistically, and culturally diverse clients must be multiculturally competent. How can multicultural competency be assessed in counselors? How can these competencies be acquired? In this volume, a cast of leading researchers and educators in multicultural counseling and psychology addresses the issues of what makes a counselor multiculturally competent and how to create more culturally competent counselors. Multicultural Counseling Competence considers ways to evaluate counselors for their awareness, knowledge, and skills in working with a broad spectrum of populations. Chapters also examine at length the pedagogical implications of establishing competencies, including training philosophies and models as well as course and curriculum development. Likewise, a group of contributors consider the impact that multiculturalism has on supervision and the theories and strategies that supervisors can use to ensure a culturally competent clinical environment. A cornerstone volume, Multicultural Counseling Competence pulls together the essence of issues facing the establishment of competencies. Counseling educators and supervisors especially will want to use this book to ensure that their programs help counselors become more culturally aware and serve all clients with efficiency and respect.

      Book Description

In the wake of the Enron implosion and the subsequent revelations of numerous cases of corporate misconduct, sweeping legislation was enacted to reform the system of corporate financial oversight and to ensure protection for employees and investors. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act, signed into law by President George W. Bush on July 20, 2002, is a landmark in policymaking, business law, and social activism. Whisteblower Law is the first book to explain and analyze the impact and implications of this legislation, especially as it pertains to the rights of whistleblowers--those who dare to come forward with evidence of wrongdoing. Written by the leading experts in the field and drawing on their extensive experience in advising law-makers, arguing cases, and training professionals, Whisteblower Law will become the standard reference for lawyers, judges, and mediators; corporate executives and managers; employees of publicly traded companies; labor leaders and human resource advocates; and potential whistleblower alike. The authors point out that the impact of Sarbanes-Oxley and related reforms in law and policy will have a profound effect on the corporate and legal communities. For example, the law mandates for the first time that all publicly traded companies establish formal whistleblowing programs and that corporate attorneys must divulge information that would implicate their clients in criminal acts, effectively becoming whistleblowers themselves. Written in accessible language that will appeal to anyone concerned with the rights and responsibilities of whistleblowers in an age of corporate scrutiny, Whistleblower Law will become the standard reference for lawyers, judges, and mediators; corporate executives and managers; employees of publicly traded companies; professors and students of corporate law; labor leaders and human resource advocates; and potential whistleblower alike.

In 1990, National Semiconductor carried just three days of cash reserves and seemed headed toward a certain crash; five years later, it had not only survived but was being widely praised as "Silicon Valley's Comeback Company." In Corporate Comeback, Robert Miles, who helped engineer the remarkable transformation, details how it came about and what lessons others can take from it. The first chapter alone provides more information on initiating corporate change than many books offer in their entirety.

            Book Description

Recounting his efforts assisting National Semiconductor stage the era's most stunning transformation, Miles articulates a winning framework that has evolved over the course of a stellar 20-year career. The powerful lessons he shares can help leaders avoid the costly results of trial and error, and face today's transitions armed with insight and experience.

3 out of 5 stars Very good help.......2007-10-03

It's a very good bar book. It has helped me a lot. The only problem is that it should have and index for each liquor and its definition. Sometimes I have the name of a liquor and is hard to find where it says what it is. But the rest is perfect!

5 out of 5 stars Great looking book.......2007-08-13

I'm new to drinking. I love this book. It has a picture and description of different glasses and bar equipment. Each recipe shows what glass to use. Some recipes have other names the drink is known by or the history of the drink. This is an excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars The best bar book out there.......2007-06-19

I have over ten books that contain drink recipes and this is by far the best. It has tons of drink recipes. The drinks are all the standard names, rather than the crazy names in many books. It also has lots on information that is really unobtrusive, because what you really want when you buy a book like this is drink recipes.

It has a very nice cover. I've spilled stuff on it, and it's wiped right off. Plus, this book is nice enough that no matter how fancy-schmancy your bar is, then this book will fit right in.

It has illustrations of the kind of glass for every drink, which is very cool, because I can never remember what an old-fashioned glass is.

Also, it has sketches of all of the different kinds of bar equipment out there. I never knew there were five different kinds of wine openers, and they are a butler's friend, classic corkscrew, lever pull, screwpull, sommelier's corkscrew and a winged corkscrew. My new goal is to collect all five.

It also has different, cool information about the different alcohols. Like it talked about how Don Jose Maria Guadalupe Cuervo was the one who invented tequila in 1795. I love Cuervo tequila, so it was cool to know how it got started.

5 out of 5 stars Expansive Mixology Guide.......2007-04-14

The Ultimate Bar Book, at 450 pages, is as comprehensive as you are likely ever to need. It provides recipes to the classics and all of their variants, newly fashionable drinks, and provides rational commentary on the ingredients--whether to use the pricey ones or not, and what equivalents you might use. It even provides a guide to the barware for each drink.

The book is well constructed and attractive. Its enjoyable just to thumb through it, and to see what is in so many drinks. The mixing trends come out after a brief review of the many drinks--you can easily expand your cocktail repertoire without the fuss of mixing and failing several times.

I recommend the book as a basic bar staple. If you enjoy the art of "mixology," this is a fun sourcebook.

5 out of 5 stars Best book to start with or add to collection.......2007-04-04

This was my first book I bought to do with making drinks and I couldn't be happier. First of all, the book itself is amazing, great hard cover and beautiful pages. Next, the author really spends some time going over 101 of making drinks. Lastly, the recipes are very well put together along with side notes for variations and suggested substitutes. At the end, the author even gives drink recipes for morning after remedies. And again, I must point out the beauty of the book, sure it's hard to keep it open, but unless you are actually a professional bartender needing a spiral book, the Ultimate Bar Book is beautiful enough to just be a decorative item in the kitchen. It's also nice how the author will stop and take a minute to discuss the classic cocktails and their histories, etc. The author also takes breaks in the book to talk about the individual alcohol's themselves using elegant page colors and patterns. Funny enough, having this book now makes me want to go out and buy another bar book, but I actually can't find another one that meets the beauty, elegance, sophistication, amount of knowledge, insights gained, and completeness as the "Ultimate Bar Book: The Comprehensive Guide to Over 1,000 Cocktails".
Bravo! And I will be waiting for what will come next from Mittie Hellmich.

                Book Description

Similar to the creation of the 401(k), designed to assist families saving for retirement, Congress has responded to the need of families saving for college expenses by instituting a tax-favored savings vehicle. Created in 1996 and named the "529 Plan," these state-backed plans allow for the saving of funds for secondary education on a tax deferred basis, with eventual withdrawals for educational expenses, tax free. Much like the opportunity afforded by the 401(k) plan, employees will be in a position to payroll deduct funds to be directed to the 529 Plan provider of choice.

The book includes thorough, easy-to-understand explanations of the benefits of the "529 Plan." A section of frequently asked questions will help the reader determine how best to take advantage of this tax shelter. A listing of available periodical resources, website addresses and a thorough index makes this title the most important personal finance book available for any parent, grandparent or employee to have and use.

                Back Cover Copy

Whether you want to save for your children, grandchildren, spouse, friend or yourself, The 529 College Savings Plan is the way to go. This book guides you through the savings process, cuts through the legal and financial language and gets you focused on college savings. Learn how the 529 Plan differs from other savings programs and how it will work for you.

The 529 College Savings Plan shows in a step-by-step format how to use this new government benefit. The book:

•Demonstrates how everyone can save for college—tax free

                • Compares the 529 Plan to other savings plans such as Coverdell, Crummey and Prepaid Tuition Credit alternatives

                • Answers "Frequently Asked Questions" about the 529 Plan

                • Specifies the kinds of institutions that are eligible for the 529 Plan

                • Explains such details as qualified higher education expenses

                • Clarifies beneficiary issues

                •Identifies Plan Managers

•Explains the 529 Plan requirements for all participating states

                Customer Reviews:

                2 out of 5 stars Not necessary.......2006-02-16

Great information is contained in the book for parents, relatives, or friends of a child for whom they would like to save money. The problem, however, is that you can find all of the information on-line for free. Also, most parents don't need an entire book to determine how a 529 plan works. Most states offer a plan and parents are likely to select that plan. The information contained on the states' websites is more than sufficient to give the average reader with little or no investment acumen all of the details they need without overwhelming them.

                4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2003-06-24

If you are serious about a college savings plan, this is a good book to buy. It explains all the aspects to you in a simple straight forward way. Would definately recommend.

                Book Description

Controlling Technology Ethics and the Responsible Engineer Second Edition This valuable guide provides an in-depth treatment of what constitutes ethical behavior on the part of engineers. It carefully examines the various conflicts faced by engineers and offers practical, proven advice on what to do in such situations. This revised and considerably expanded Second Edition examines the causes and consequences of technological disasters such as Bhopal, Chernobyl, Challenger, and the precursor of them all, the Titanic. It also describes such highly successful projects as the Panama Canal and the Shinkansen. I have purchased this book for the last decade and a half. It is great to use in the preparation of returns. I also have used it to meet my states' CPE requirements. I don't think that is possible any longer, but this is still a handy tool.

Other features include a annual update of the changes to the prior year's code and reg, and a calender of important date to plan preparation and filing dates.

The MTG references the larger loose leaf service that CCH sells too. The MTG can be used without the other service which can be found in some of the larger libraries if further research is required.

5 out of 5 stars Christmas with Elvis.......2007-01-03

I really enjoyed this book. It was fun to read about Christmas at Graceland and how generous Elvis was. What was the most important to me is the photo of Elvis at Christmas, 1976.

5 out of 5 stars A True Gift to the Elvis World.......2003-01-16

Yes this book is truly the best gift anyone can give the Elvis world.
I have to admit that this is the "BEST" Elvis publication to date.
The photos are beautiful, touching, warm, and holiday-oriented and the information is fantastic.

A great package all the way around from cover, to size, to quality. This was money well spent!

Jim Curtin (who I have found to be the top author on Elvis books along with his writer Renata Ginter), is truly top of the line in his publications.

I did notice that Curtin's books lack the fabrications that ALL other Elvis books have. No BS in his books and what a relief!

It is quite nice to sit down and read something nice on Elvis for a change, rather than have to put up with made-up stories and information about his sex life, his drug addictions, his death, his fetishes. God let the man rest in peace.

My request is to have all the publishers publish books ONLY by Jim Curtin and Renata Ginter from now on.

Just imagine, no more bad Elvis book would be ever pushed on the public again! That would be Elvis heaven!

5 out of 5 stars How the King of Rock and Roll spend Christmas.......2001-11-05

Hey people who know Elvis Presley fans or are you an Elvis Presley fan and don't have this book, buy a copy of the book. In chapter 22, the author Jim Curtin tells the people reading the book that he met Elvis Presley in 1976. This is the first and only Elvis Presley spend Christmas.

And there are aslo pitcures in this book. And one looks pretty funny. It's a Elvis Presley t-shirt from the 90's, and there is a pitcure of an animated Santa Claus tells a person on a phone, "No, No, I said Elves, Send Me Fifty Elves." He has Elvis Presley look alikes but wants elves. (Page 152). I laught at A Very Funny Christmas. Which is on chapter 15. Some of you people might or might not know that Elvis Presley was once poor. And you can read about how he spend his poor Christmases.

I guess you are never to old or young to learn. In 1965, Elvis Presley decide to dress up as Santa Claus and had children on his lap telling him what they want for chirstmas. And when he had bigger children, he tried to get a hold of his laughter, but couldn't and got out of a mall, without people seeing him laugh.

You can aslo read Christmas Quotes by Elvis Presley. Like when he tells that he believed in Santa Claus until he was age 8. He had learn that it was his parents doing the role of Santa Claus. Why do parents use Santa Claus as a excplaimn to children at christmas who brought the presents fr them, and at Easter, when tell it was from the easter bunny, when it really was from them? Isn't that a lie? This is a great book to read whether it's Christmas or not.

                  5 out of 5 stars A actual surprise!.......2001-08-02

I came across this book in a local used book shop.
For some reason this book was not sold outright in the main bookstores.

My first initial reaction to this book, once I flipped through it, was:
too bad: some of the printing is not high quality.
But hey, once I looked through the book and read some of the stories, my second reaction took over:
wow the contents are really nice!
as an Elvis fan, I loved the collectibles and as a result I bought another copy off the net.
one is for my library and the holidays and the other I use as a collectible guide.

This is a GOOD book (a real good one) and its done by someone I really didn't know anything about, nor had I heard of him.
But I did do a check on him, once I liked his book, and he did 6 other books on Elvis.
I will see if this man, who proclaims to be the world's foremost Elvis expert, is the real thing, or another self proclaimer like the "fantastic four" (Lichter, Dowling, Tunzi, Guralnick/Jorgensen)

A hint though: from what I see in this book, this man may actually be the REAL DEAL!
                  he has quality and intregrity.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful!.......2000-10-04

If this rating scale could go up to a 10 - I would give this book the 10! It is the absolute best!

Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays, but never had a connection of Elvis and Christmas crossed my mind, other than playing his music. So I was surprised to see this book in the stores and offered on the net. I immediately bought it, and let me say this: this book is by far worth the money.

What a neat collection of Christmas collectibles, photos and stories. All perfectly selected and all with a reason.

This is really a drop-dead gorgeous publication.

Just another winner from Jim Curtin!

                    Book Description

This frank autobiography covers the first twenty-two years of the life of Raphael Patai, famous anthropologist and biblical scholar. Patai shares meticulously researched genealogical narratives and historical and sociological observations, mixed freely--and with engaging frankness--with portions of an intensely personal and intimate nature. He paints a critical yet affectionate picture of Hungarian Jewry in the years preceding 1933--a world that is no more.
