    3 out of 5 stars Useful Ideas........2007-05-11

I read this book back in the nineties. The tips and ideas I acquired in this book those early days provided an important platform for me to stand on. Whether you are totally unorganized or not, you are bound to find this book useful. This book will encourage you to be more disciplined with organizing the affairs in your life. God knows in this day of information overload you need all the tips, advice and revelations you can find on organization. This book will meet the objective of boosting productivity at some level in one's daily life.

    4 out of 5 stars Good ideas-.......2006-03-08

This book by Stephanie Winston has some good ideas for the new generation of cell phones, email, and office clutter. There are options available, and many of the ideas are easy to implement.

4 out of 5 stars Everyone hates the paperwork, but it's got to get done.......2006-02-28

The Organized Executive covers four topics dedicated to managing paperwork, tasks, time and staff. It specifically gives guidelines on planning one's day and setting priorities. It gives scheduling advice and a perspective on how to avoid time wasters. Staff problems from delegation to staff, expectations of staff, and management of staff is covered. The section on managing paperwork is covered first and provides a system for managing paperwork.
"The key to paper management is processing: that is, channeling each piece from your in-box to its appropriate destination." Learning a system that handles paperwork efficiently will result in greater accomplishments, more enjoyment from work, and result in spending fewer hours with paperwork.
Learn the TRAF technique to properly manage paperwork. The first rule in TRAF, before you can use this system, is to READ THE PAPERWORK. Use the following technique on every single piece of paperwork:

TOSS: "Man's best friend, aside from a dog, is the wastebasket," says Business Week. Ask yourself, "What is the worst thing that can happen if I toss this out?

REFER: Delegate paperwork to a staffer or others that are more qualified or trained to deal with the paperwork. Follow-up on paperwork that you delegate.

ACT: Use an action folder to ensure that items that need attention are together in one location. Later, this folder can be prioritized.

FILE: For items that can not be delegated or require action, but can not be discarded immediately, should be filed. Mark this filed paperwork with a discard date to know when the paperwork can be successfully tossed.

4 out of 5 stars Sound suggestions; actual read takes effort.......2005-05-25

The 1980s book is continually updated. Stephanie Winston, also author of Getting Organized, presents a wealth of ideas for managing time, paper, and people more effectively. While she offers sound time- and task-management skills such as "the art of organization," "effective filing techniques," and other ways to promote efficiency, the book is packed with charts, exhibits, and "systems" and hence requires energetic readers.

It does not address the mental/spiritual aspects of staying organized and in control -- something readers want and, more importantly, need.

2 out of 5 stars A Classic Text, Superficially Updated.......2003-03-28

The cover claims that the book has been "revised and updated for the digital age," but Winston's information on technological tools is both superficial and already dated. The term, "PDA," does not even appear in the index.

5 out of 5 stars Great for New Hostess.......2006-12-28

I LOVE this book!! I got this book for Christmas and I can't wait to begin using it. I am a newlywed and just begining to entertain in our home and this book is wonderful. Literally every single thing in it was something that my husband I would love to eat or drink and we would be proud to serve to our guests. I love that it gives a full menu for each theme down to the drink or cocktail. For us, alcohol is where the budget really starts to get excessive for us when we have people over. I love the idea of just making one of the signature cocktails and offering that for the evening and maybe beer or wine. It would definitely take our bar tab down!! There was also a large assortment of non-alcoholic beverage options that went past the typical cheezy punches made with 7-Up and are overly sweet. These were cool non-alcoholic cocktails that my guests that don't drink or have to drive that day or evening would love to have as an option. I loved that the food was all geared to be made ahead of time and required little or no attention while my guests were there. All of the recipes (except the dinner party main course section) would be fine to sit out and have people munch as they wanted to. This will definitly simplify my entertaining and I'm sure my friends and family will love it too!!

Casual entertaining is what this is. There are some delicious meals that will impress your guests! The peach bread pudding in my husbands favorite. The crab cakes are a huge hit with any crowd, and the tomato salad is delicious. A few items are time consuming but worth it. Book Description

The classic bestseller by Benjamin Graham, perhaps the greatest investment adviser of the Twentieth Century, The Intelligent Investor has taught and inspired hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Since its original publication in 1949, Benjamin Graham's book has remained the most respected guide to investing. This tape demonstrates that the continued success of common stocks cannot be taken for granted. Among its special features are the use of numerous comparisons of pairs of common stocks to bring out their elements of strength and weakness, and also the construction of investment portfolios designed to meet specific requirements of quality and price attractiveness.

There are a number of problems with this audio tape. They are:

                a) Content is very outdated. The original copyright was 1973 while the latest, on the audio tape box, was 1996. Despite this 23 year difference there are no modifications for almost anything that has happened in terms of either the financial markets, historically, since that time nor (more importantly) have their been any additiions for the large number of financial instruments that permit portfolio diversification (i.e., mutual funds are barely discussed, ETFs, indexing and foreign stocks and finacial instruments are not even mentioned). How can it be 2007 with not a mention (or bare mention of any of these?

                b) No discussion of portfolio theory and the importance of diversification.

                c) Stock analysis is primarily geared to manufacturing company. For example, the analysis on the importance of book value is geared exclusively to manufacturing and inventory carrying businesses. The concept of intellectual property is not even mentioned in passing.

                d) No discussion of economic or financial market history since early 1970s. In addition, no mention of financial markets outside the U.S. (or world outside of the US for that matter).

                e) Very limited financial discussion on financial ratios and the few there are are limited to manufacturing companies.

                f) Emphasis in stock analysis is primarily on Dow Jows Industrials. Not much of a world outside that exists in terms of book's discussion.

One can obtain much more useful information on stock analysis and investment in almost any introductory level undergraduate text on finance.

There are two reasons it is to be given even one star. One is that it discusses some stock market history from WWI period to early 1970s. The second is that it was "cutting edge" for many years since it was first published. It thus provides some historical perspective on stock analysis (i.e., especially the analysis on manufacturing companies, almost no technology or intellectual property discussed, etc.). This alone is worth the one star as it will make one think how much of what is currently "mainstream" or "cutting edge" in stock/finance investment will become just as obsolete in another 30 years.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for Fundamental Investors.......2006-12-03

First, I just want to say that many of you might find this book boring to read. If that turn out to be the case, you can read the commentary (which uses more relevant and recent examples) for each chapter by Jason Zweig, which is worth the price of the book alone. I got tempted to read the commentary only but I forced myself to read the entire book and I'm glad I did it. Warren Buffett is right, this is the best book on investing ever written, by far. This is one of the reasons in my opinion why Warren himself never write an investment book (plus the fact that it is not easy to explain Warren's intelligent on a paper. Instead just learn from what he does).

Now about the content of this book, it tells you everything you need to know about the investing field (not only stocks, but business in general, bonds, macro economy to some extent, psychological factor of the market, strategy for defensive and speculative investors etc).

Secondly, Warren Buffett highly recommend this book and his favorites are chapter 20 (Margin of safety) and chapter 8 (Investor and market fulctuation). Margin of safety should be the central concept of your investment, and understanding how the market works (and the mood and inconsistencies of Mr Market) should be the second thing that you need to know before jumping into the market.

I also find the chapter 11 (security analysis for lay investor) very educating as it teaches us to value the future of a business (breaking down into 3 area:
                1. Long term prospect
                2. Quality and conduct of management
                3. Financial strength and capital structure

Additionally the comparison of eight companies (chapter 18) very practical and eye opening. I won't spill the content right here but when I read them, it feels like common sense to me, but back (during the tech bubble) then I was involved in several similar stocks that I shouldn't have touched with a ten feet pole.

The bonus chapter "The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville" by Warren Buffett is a classic reading. This article shows how inefficient the market can be, and argue that most of the time the market is not efficient. I have become a believer that the market is not efficient (after many years believing that the market is very efficient as the business school has taught me)

This book also cover several useful metrics that we can use to value a company in addition to just looking at EPS or PE ratio, such as the ROIC (Return on Invested Capital) etc.

In general, Ben Graham focuses a bit more on capital preservation (shown by focusing on margin of safety, dividend policy, and stocks priced below its tangible book value strategy.) which I think are really important, but one need to understand that there's more to investment than just those things (such as long term groth/the business itself and management) which are also covered in book.

This book would not serve as your investing philosophy, but it should help you create your own investing philosophies. It will help you find what your strength (defensive or enterprising) is and find/form your circle of competence. And as a minimum, this book will increase your confident when dealing with the stock market.

Last but not least, also read "Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits" by Philip A. Fisher and "One up on Wall Street" by Peter Lynch to complement this book.

                Happy Investing!

2 out of 5 stars Stay away from the abridged book on tape -- it's badly dated.......2005-09-02

The abridged book on tape version (ISBN 0-694-51801-8) mostly covers market conditions in the early 1970s. (It's apparently an abridgement done in 1986 of a book Graham wrote in the early 1970s before his death in 1976). Yes, there is some historic interest here, but not enough of Benjamin Graham's timeless advice on investing. I recommend finding another version of Graham's work, unless you're an economic historian researching the early 1970s.

By the way, Graham's comments on the tape totally failed to foresee the big energy crisis and runaway inflation of the mid 1970s (as did 90%+ of investors then, including most other experts).

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books on investing ever written.......2004-03-20

This is a must read for any person serious about investing (ie not gambling) in the stock market. The book is rather easy to read. Graham was an investor but also a teacher (at Columbia). He has a good balance between technical yet simple explanation. If you know absolutely nothing about the stock market and financials, you may still find it a bit obscure at time, but you should probably not invest directly anyway (at least not right away). For everyone else, read it.
Yes the latest edition was written in 1972. It is amusing at time to see the evolution. But actually this evolution is also part of what you learn by reading the book. You do see that some things never change (like valuing a company!), and others do change quite a bit. it gives you a nice perspective. Now the intersting part of the book is to understand the logic of Graham, less its conclusions. The conclusions date a bit. Graham used to work at a time when most corporations where industrial companies, when nowadays services are dominant for example. So take graham conclucions with a grain of salt. But do read in depth and try to understand his logic.
Value investing won't make you rich overnight. But reasonnably well done, it will avoid having you lose money, and can even open you the doors of year by year over-performance in the market. Warren Buffett and several other successfull investors have followed the approach of Graham. But as they all say, when you first read about value investing, you either understand it right away, or you never will. But trust my 15 year of investing on the stock market, you're better of understanding the value of value investing. And this book is the key to it.

                5 out of 5 stars Intelligent Investor.......2003-01-21

Intelligent Investor is the single greatest book ever written on investing. Look at Ben Graham's track record, all of several of his students (including Warren Buffett) have also built foutunes using his advice.

The author is definitely ahead of his time. This guide will come in handy as soon as things open up in Cuba. It will give anyone interested in living or investing there a head start. It's only a question of time before the embargo ends and the moment comes for people to take advantage of all of the "golden" opportunities Cuba will have to offer. This book or an updated version in the same format will be exactly what one needs to make the move and succeed. Bravo! Bravo!

3 out of 5 stars Informative, but very poorly written.......2001-06-29

If the book didn't read like a high school term paper I would have given it five stars. The information contained in the book is very insightful. I just had a hard time with the poor grammer and spelling. I'm no english professor, but this was really bad. I felt like I was reading something written by a fifteen year old. Not only did the editor not run a spell check he didn't even proof read it.

If you can get past the poor writing style this book will be well worth your money if you are thinking of moving to Cuba. It is obvious though that the author was not a business major. So don't expect too much about investing in Cuba.

1 out of 5 stars This Book is a ..., don't even think about buying it........2001-06-20

This book is merely a tourist guide, and a bad one. The author makes asumptions like in the future things will change, and things are bound to get better, hardly an investment guide. I have been to Cuba over 30 times, and everyone knows that it is almost impossible to buy property, the few condos that were available to the public were highly overpriced, over $350,000. and any other kind of transaction either rent or sale of housing is illegal and banned.

The author talks about the excellent health care system, but forgets to mention that medicines and first class services are only accesible to tourists, and none of them compare to the services in the US; if you ever go to regular hospitals, you have to bring your own sheets, syringes swabs and have to look for the prescribed drugs in the black market, since public hospitals cannot afford them.

The author talks about the affordability of the country, and that's a lie, since everything is available through the black market, everything is overpriced, restaurants and bars of average quality are overpriced, take the Tocororo restaurant where your bill might go as high as $50.00 per person without wine and the restaurant is of average quality compared to those in the US or Mexico, drinks are expensive in the clubs, take the one in the hotel Comodoro where one beer costs 8.00 dollars and one mojito costs 10.00

The author talks about some cracks having appeared in the political system due to a poor economy, but it still has a stable government. There was famine for Gods sake in 1994, those are not cracks and the governments stability is due to repression of its own people, sure as a foreigner you are treated nicely and courteously, but the repression of the beautiful Cuban people is a fact hard to overlook.

When the author talks about the people he says that they prefer the urban lifestyle, about 70% live in cities. That's because there is no access to dollars in the country, and therefore no access to black market goods like milk, beef or cheese, and farmers risk being jailed by going to the city to struggle to make a living and get some dollars for their families, that's why we see the prostitution of the "Guajiras".

In another chapter the author writes about "Finding Companionship" and the fame of Cuban women's "Derires" maybe he tried to say derrière. Pathetic. He also states that these women tend to be more devoted to the North American males than to Cuban males since they find them (Cubans) too macho, I'd like to see Mr Howard's credentials in order to make that statement that seems derogatory from all sides.

When he talks about investments his ignorance shines, making business in Cuba is one of the hardest things to do given the bureocracy, sure he gives a list of good bussines ideas, what he doesn't tell you or he doesn't know is that most of these ideas are forbidden by the Cuban government. Cuba's government wants you doing business directed to exportations or tourist services, he doesn't want you meddling with the local consumer, and if you invest in tourism they only want you to invest in big projects with them as an equal partner, they don't want you setting up a small restaurant or bar or cafe, the government wants you there only if you mean big business, and that means anything over a million dollars, otherwise visit as a tourist.

I don't mean to criticize Cuba, I mean to criticize a book that seems like a ... leaflet. Cuba even with all its shortcomings is still to me one of the greatest destinations in the world, and I wouldn't give it up for any of the other great resort projects of the world, its charm and style are unique as well as its people, but this book will only confuse and deceive and form an opinion in its readers of a country that has nothing to do with what is described inside its pages, investment wise and living wise. Really it has nothing to do with it.

5 out of 5 stars What a timely book for the Coming Cuba Travel Boom!.......1999-08-15

"Travel Tips and News Newsletter" by Jens Jurgen July/August 1999

The first edition of "Living and Investing in the New Cuba" is an interesting new book by Christopher Howard. In it the author describes Cuba's colorful history, its flora and fauna, customs, foods, health care, transportation, learning Cuban-style Spanish, Cuba's amazing people and much more. There is not too much about the many disadvantages of living under the current oppresive regime. However, many people anticipate a change soon.

The investment portion of Howard's book (published in Costa Rica) is written for a worldwide audience. Europeans as well as Canadians can already invest in Cuba (Americans can't legally as of now but there will be lots of opportunities in the future). As with lesser known travel and investment opportunities, one should do a lot of homework in advance. Don't wait until the U.S. Teasury eases or drops its regulations prohibiting Americans from trading with Cuba. This handy guide provides a two-page list of possible start-up business in Cuba to pique your imagination. BUY and READ Christopher Howard's book now to get a head start.

                      Book Description

This timely study by a former investigative reporter zeroes in on the role of the journalist in a democratic society. Robert Miraldi explores the relationship between an objective reportorial stance wherein an audience is given verifiable, neutral "facts" and muckraking, when a reporter crusades on an issue to expose what he or she sees as evil. Including examples of muckraking from newspapers, magazines, and television, the volume traces the history of muckraking journalism and investigative reporting from the turn of the century, when a band of magazine writers were exposing political and business corruption, to the sixties and seventies when television and newspaper reporters continued the tradition of expose journalism. He locates the colliding traditions of journalism in democracy's demand that the press uncover crime and corruption while at the same time requiring that reporters observe the social process more than intrude. The collision between objectivity and expose informs this fact-filled study. The first chapter recounts Miraldi's experience as a New York City reporter tracking down illegal drug sales and offers an historical overview of muckraking journalism. Chapter Two analyzes the work of Ida Tarbell, David Graham Phillips, Samuel H. Adams, Will Irwin, Ray Stannard Baker, and Charles Edward Russell, six turn-of-the-century muckraking writers who were determined to be both objective reporters and partisan crusaders. The fall of muckraking journalism and its later reappearance with Edward R. Murrow's "Harvest of Shame" television documentary are the focus of chapters Three and Four. Chapter Five presents a case study of New York Times reporter John L. Hess' expose of New York State's nursing homes. Concluding with a look at factors that interfere with the work of journalists, Dr. Miraldi, in chapter Six, calls for a renewed spirit of activism as journalism enters the nineties. The book closes with a penetrating interview with Fred W. Friendly. This challenging history is must reading for scholars in journalism and mass media, practicing journalists and historians, students and teachers in college-level journalism and mass media courses, theory classes such as Press History and Mass Media in Society, as well as newswriting courses at all levels.

3 out of 5 stars Tragedy and Triumph.......2004-10-20

Part One covers the long road to diagnosis with Part II covering treatment and includes excerpts from the parent therapy log. There are also a few black and white photos in some of the chapters. The photos did not really have any affect on me and could have been left out. Also quite bothersome to this reader was the habit of smoking cigarettes that Julie had, plus the fact that never was this discussed on how detrimental it could be to her children.

I would advise future readers to read the foreword after the book was been finished. I found it confusing reading about the test scores and mention of whether Drew was actually autistic or not better digested after learning the family dynamics beforehand. It is hard to comprehend on one page the dedication to several people who volunteered in the fight for Drew's life and then learning he has been cured and no longer viewed as being on the spectrum. I find that hard to believe as a parent and really did not focus on that aspect.

Unfortunately Autism: From Tragedy to Triumph did not delve too far into the therapy, but centered more on the feelings of the mother through out the process of raising her kids and dealing with the stigma associated at the time known as Refrigerator Mothers. She left her husband who was not very involved with the kids and did not believe Drew was different from other kids. She did move to another State and the book glossed over much of their lives.

The only parts I could relate to was doing most of the work herself by seeing professionals and caring for the daily lives of her children and the hassle of driving on freeways with a child that might open a door or get out of their seat. I did feel for Julie when they first started working at the autism clinic at UCLA with her viewing from the two-way mirror and cringing when her son would cry and they would continue at the same pace.

Dr. Lovaas comes across as a caring and understanding professional and one of the first Julie came in contact when learning about autism. I did not agree with the requirements they maintained for being in the program. Julie was not allowed to mention that Drew had a disability when she enrolled him in school. I am not sure I would have done the same thing, but she maintained that secrecy and Drew supposedly turned out to be a normal child. The book really does a good job of sharing the struggles on a daily basis in the early years while raising three small kids and the sacrifices the siblings had to endure. In order to enroll Drew in the autism program Julie was informed her other son who was younger would have to be in a daycare program so she could concentrate fully on Drew.

I would have liked to read more about the progress Drew made with the therapy. It just seemed to focus much on the autism in the beginning sharing the habits of the child that clearly indicated he was autistic and then after an unspecified amount of therapy he no longer had the diagnosis. Apparently I missed something in the book to have it happen so quickly. I was not happy when I read how to keep Drew focused on therapy Julie would not be able to feed him in the morning and the appointment was set closer to the afternoon. The therapy seemed very rigid and not flexible with more focus on that than the child, but they triumphed in the end so what do I know.

5 out of 5 stars autism from tragedy to triumph.......2000-08-22

I found this book to be uplifting and encouraging.

                                5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2000-04-16

Small children are the joys of our lives. They sing, dance, whine, cry, play, pretend and even copy what they see. So what if your child doesn't respond to your call or what if the child seems lost in its own world, then what?

In this 180-page story you'll find out the ways you can deal with autism and autistic children. You'll be given an excellent insight into what you can do and where to find help. The book should be a great help to those who have autistic children and have trouble finding answers.

The book shows how effective the Lovass Method is; I will not begin to claim I understand the method. I have read arguments on both sides, so I will leave the decision up to those who are facing the issue. I can say the authors believe it works and they present a persuasive argument.

Finally I think that this book shows you that there is help out for parents, from therapy groups to doctors. Branden Publishing can take great pride in this book, as like so many others, it is excellent reading.

                                1 out of 5 stars Extremely Poor.......1999-03-11

Poor English, poor editing, and poor spelling lead you through this unrealistic tale of how a mother in just a few miraculous weeks 'cures' her 31/2 year old son of autism over 20 years ago. For a similar but more realistic book and higher quality story and text I strongly suggest you read Catherine Maurice's 'LET ME HEAR YOUR VOICE'. I also suggest Donna Williams' books: 'NOBODY, NOWHERE' and 'SOMEBODY,SOMEWHERE' for a true inside look at Ms. Williams' life with autism, and her book 'AUTISM: AN INSIDE-OUT APPROACH',is an excellent book to examine just how complicated autism is, and the maizes and puzzles involved in sorting out the right kind of help for each individual diagnosed with autism.
