                          Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Not very complete (or accurate) after all.......2007-07-09

I was very recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and need accurate information on grams of carbohydrates to determine my insulin use. I had to send this book back - the nutritional information was incorrect for the couple of recipes I looked at (For example, one recipe stated it had over 100 grams of carbs. I couldn't tell if it was missing a decimal or what the problem was. Even if that was the carbs per recipe rather than per serving, when you divided it by the # of servings it still ended up being more carbs than most diabetics should eat at a meal).
In addition, the majority of the recipes were for desserts - which doesn't make a complete meal in my diet!

5 out of 5 stars Even My Husband Loves These Recipes.......2007-03-29

When I was first diagnosed with Type II diabetes, although my husband was quite supportive, his first thoughts were of how were we going to change our eating habits. So I went to Barnes & Noble and browsed through their books on Diabetes. This one had so many wonderful recipes in it that I knew I could incorporate into our lives and bring at holiday gatherings. The sweets are wonderful and many times if I don't tell people that they are diabetic, they are unable to tell. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is or knows someone who is diabetic.

4 out of 5 stars Complete Diabetic Cookbook.......2001-10-16

By Finsand, Caldwell, and White - This book has thousands of recipes and they are good. I don't think I will ever grow tired of using it. However, if you or someone you are cooking for has just recently been diagnosed with diabetes, this is not the book to get you started. It does have useful charts, but it has very little educational material about the disease. I would recommend this book as a companion to a book with comprehensive information about diabetes. I think the most prominent chart in the book deals with sugar substitutes. (The Simply Gourmet Diabetes Cookbook by Mary Donkersloot is a great place to get started. With this book and the book you are reading about, youu will never lack in information and choices.)

Personally, I would prefer less recipes about desserts. There are hundreds and hundreds of these recipes. I've never really craved daily deserts or sweetened foods. After spending time in the hospital, and meeting other diabetics, this may be exactly what you need, though. Some people do eat sweet dishes frequently. I plan to use these recipies in cooking for my aging parents and myself, in order to provide things that we can all eat. I doubt I will use more than a portion of this book in my own home.

5 out of 5 stars Better than most 'Regular' Cookbooks.......2000-07-01

One would not know that these recipes were designed for a diabetic, until they looked at some of the ingredients. These are tasty, flavorful, and creative recipes for the whole family, designed to lower the sugar/carbohydrate intake grams for diabetics. The recipes are simple, and made with the 'usual' ingredients with the exception of the sugar substitutes. And, there are handy conversion charts that show how to convert 'sugars' to sugar substitutes.

Anyone will enjoy the foods that they make from these recipe's. This is truly a 'gourmet' cookbook, with literally thousands of recipes for everyday living. There are entree and side dish recipe's, but my favorite section are the hundreds of 'dessert' recipes. You have to try those Cream Puffs!

1 out of 5 stars Can you really sign you tax forms with a clear conscience?.......1999-03-31

It should bother any thinking person that such an elaborate guide is needed just to go on living with some degree of assurance that the IRS isn't going to knock down your door and destroy your life.

You cannot learn all you need to know to master the tax code, for it cannot be mastered. The IRS doesn't understand it either, they depend on force to extract 1.7 trillion dollars from a public suffering from fear and ignorance.

If you want to really learn something, study the new book by Sheldon Richman "Your Money Or Your Life." It's revolutionary!

4 out of 5 stars Clear and helpful.......1999-02-19

The American Express Tax Guide 1999 makes sense of the 1999 tax code, with clear, practical suggestions. I filled my copy with penciled notes and sticky tabs. It will definitely be my reference when I sit down to do my taxes. Plus, the price of the book itself is tax deductible, according to "Commonly Overlooked Deductions" # 47, page 642! ("Tax preparation fees [are deductible] including the cost of this book in the year that you bought it.")

5 out of 5 stars Best book yet for do it yourself tax payers.......1998-01-30

This American Express tax guide is the best 1998 tax guide yet for "do it yourself" tax preparers. I find it easy to locate the help I need. The little tips and good ideas on each page really help. It's well worth the low price to get the forms and the explanations.

                          Book Description

This book offers a philosophy of mind that applies itself to financial auction markets. Chu understands that the business of money markets is forward-looking. The well-known idea that prices reflect values does not always show up in times of great market turbulence. Excellent chapters that expose the role of Wall Street in the American psyche teach you how to use your own mind within the larger mind of the market. In any market world, where rational decision making is often scarce, Chu's rules and strategy will make investing easier and more rewarding. One can become a better investor by going back and reading a book like this a second time and even thereafter. Foreword by James Grant of Grant's Interest Rate Observer.

                          1 out of 5 stars Misleading.......2003-11-20

This book is not much about the psychology of the market. In fact most of the text is changes in corporate finance over the years, boom/bust periods as in "madness of crowds". Lots of market history. There is no investing method per se, as stated in one review. It can be summed up as: trade with the trend, cut you losses, don't bet too much on one stock, and money goes where it is treated best. The market psychology is the same thing in other books.

Because of the high praise this book recieved I was expecting some new insights or a different perspective on market psychology. Here it failed miserably. Pass on this one.

5 out of 5 stars More than money.......2002-08-19

"The ability to accept unpleasant truths and, at the same time, respond decisively is the hallmark of a great investor." Chu tells us in Mind of the Market, his essay on the psychology of investments and the history of the markets. Chu - a money manager, civic leader and former Wall Street investment banker - advances some unusual, well-informed and intruiging idea. Unfortunately, he doesn't fully apply his own concepts.

Chu enlightens us with notions such as "living to accumulate more money suggests that we are somewhat empty and incomplete, dependent on some external activity or substance to give us meaning." Chu also advocates trading with Zen-like detachment from short-term consequences. AS a money manager, I can attest to his wisdom.

Yet Mind of the Market doesn't face the unpleasant and unprofitable truth about the unfettered free market. Chu contends the existing market gives participants an opportunity to "lift themselves off their knees and to walk out of the darkness towards the sunlight." Although he admits a "small minority" doesn't have access to self-advancement (a "flaw" of a market economy), other people simply "whine about their unequal status." After all, unequal status is the market's incentive for production.

Chu's celebration of the unfettered free market ignores the huge number of souls who don't have proper nutrition, let alone capital to invest. This "flaw" is no more inevitable than it is tolerable, for there is nothing in the concept of a market economy that requires that purchasing power and opportunity be highly concentrated rather than widely distributed. While I agree with Chu's claim that unequal status motivates people, the important question is how much inequality is enought to motivate people.

Poverty is not a popular concern these days, and raising questions about distribution of wealth won't help anyone's career on Wall Street or in politics. But unflinching intellectual honesty can raise one's spiritual standing. Chu could teach the world some important lessons if only he would rethink Wall Street's advice to let capital be capital. As Chu himself says, "Few individuals have the nerve to stand outside the crowd. Indeed, to go against the crowd successfully is the hallmark of greatness...[Capitalism] humiliates those who defensively cling to the status quo."

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY- THE TRUTH.......2001-12-13

The author attacks the true catalyst of the market. This is not the usual "How To" book about the market, rather a refreshing and coherent look at the foundation of the market.

5 out of 5 stars Profits And Spirituality In One Dose........2000-10-20

It took a spiritual concept from the East to put a moral and high-minded face on the stock market. F.J.Chu has brought his knowledge and practice of Zen and martial arts, along with a broad background in Western philosophy and psychology, to bear in this superb series of lessons.

Both professional and private investors, as well as wannabe market participants, can benefit from this book if they are open to a real learning experience that comes from a thoughtful, reflective and analytical reading.

The history of the U.S. stock market is made clear and understandable, even though the author says, "The history of the stock market is the history of forgetting." Chu is encouraging us not to forget. Outstanding writings such as Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations" which explains the invisible hand of allowing us to have fair prices on goods and services, and the works of John Maynard Keynes are put into perspective.

The author observes that the financial markets keep corporations and nations in line every single day by "marking them to market." Corporations' greatest taskmaster is the stock market - much more than regulators, managers and directors, and the market for their products and services.

Chu employs pithy epigrams and aphorisms from Albert Einstein, Warren Buffet, J.K. Gailbraith and others for every chapter title. They are all thought provoking and relevant. He also outlines prerequisites for beating the market. But don't expect a pat formula. The author's suggestions have more to do with patience, when not to be in the market, and avoiding weakness in one's emotional and mental state. There is an enlightening and detailed elaboration on each bull and bear market of the 20th century, with very helpful discourse on how one might look around the corner to the next major market movement. And hang on to your hat, he has some interesting thoughts.

"The most uncelebrated and misunderstood aspect of free market capitalism is its morality. Capitalism demands discipline, hard work and frugality. It preaches giving more to the system - via investment - than one takes out. It focuses the purpose and energies of a society toward productive enterprise. Finally, capitalism celebrates the wonderful diversity of individual talent and resolve. It reallocates capital to the daring; it rewards the industrious; but it punishes the indolent; and it humiliates those who cling defensively to the status quo." This is one of the more spiritual messages one could find in a book on the stock market.

"The Mind of the Market" says that "the markets rest on an intricate theory of sin that recognizes the human tendency towards depravity and evil but attempts to draw from it its creative potential. A marketplace of sinners is transformed by the virtue of reasoned self-interest into a vessel of moral productivity."

I agree, and hope that other readers can get beyond the noise and momentarily valued "how-to-beat-the-market" books and newsletters of the gurus du jour, on to a higher playing field of undersanding with Chu.

5 out of 5 stars Enlightening, Enriching and Thoroughly Enjoyable.......1999-12-23

Well worth the money! Iconoclastic, irreverent and at times cynical, the author pulls no punches. Not the typical rehash of other investment books and not a tout sheet, this book delves into the philosophical and psychological underpinnings of the market and forces the reader to examine his/her motivations for playing the game. From the perspectives gained through the author's extensive experience, his insightful observations and the reader's own self-analysis, a coherent individual investment philosophy emerges. The book is filled with wonderful quotations from disparate sources that are both thought-provoking and culturally enriching.

This long string of words reads like someone's unfinished PhD dissertation. Unfortunately, only a few of these words relate to the title, which initially sparked my interest, and talk about the application of budo for professionals. The book may be of interest to a philosopher, but I don't recommend it to anyone who either practices martial arts or is a lawyer, doctor, or manager.

With a foreword by Rush Limbaugh and a no-holds-barred approach, this book will give taxpayers plenty of reason to stand up and say "Washington, we've had enough!" Taxes are too high - the average American family hands over 38 percent of its income to the taxman - and the tax code too complex. The IRS v. The WAY your income is stolen from you is not the main issue. It is the fact that it's stolen at all.

This country was not founded on the principle of "pay up or you're going to jail".

But that is what taxes are.

If you think they are inevitable and that it's impossible to have society without them, you have a LOT of reading to do.

You could start with "Your Money or Your Life", by Sheldon Richman. From there, amazon should direct you to other titles of interest with their helpful book suggestions.

You could also check out Amazon Top-100 reviewer John "Scott" Ryan. He has some reading lists that can point you in a very good direction.

I disagree with this book. As a former Washington DC bureaucrat, I happen to know there are two sides to every story, depending on who you ask. This book only presents one side.

5 out of 5 stars How a true American tax system should work!.......2001-08-05

Franklin D. Roosevelt originally founded the Internal Revenue Service on a temporary basis, simply to collect taxes during World War II. Unfortunately, over the past 40 years, the IRS has crept into the daily lives of all Americans, and has adopted the system of "guilty until proven innocent." This book, like so many others, documents with extreme accuracy the horrors inflicted onto innocent Americans by the absolute tyranny of the IRS. More than that, however, The IRS v. the People offers a simple solution to the status quo: a flat tax and/or a national sales tax. It seems simple enough, however there are too many in Congress who refuse to let such a fair and balanced tax system take over the IRS. Many feel the abuse of the current income tax is well justified and gives it to the wealthy and successful of this country. What they fail to recognize is that the income tax hurts all Americans. A flat tax would be fair and balanced, with a fixed percentage for all income to be taxed (17%). A national sales tax would offer the same relief. A national sales tax would silence the left who claim it would greatly favor the wealthy because those who buy yachts, boats, antiques, luxury cars, and townhomes in the Riviera are the wealthy! Either way you like at it, from the left or the right, a new tax system is needed to truly reflect the principles on which this great nation was established upon: liberty and equality.

4 out of 5 stars Better Late Than Never.......2001-02-04

One wonders why it took years of punitive taxes for policy wonks to arrive at this brilliant masterpiece. But as they say, better late than never. This little book provides an overview of the rationale behind the flat tax idea. It is the best solution I have seen to the monstrosity better know as the tax code. The flat tax is a credible and workable means for delivering the taxpayer from the current corrupt and complex tax laws. I recommend this book to every taxpayers that is tired of sacrificing more and more of their own hard-earned money to Uncle Sam and want to see sensibility and fairness restored to the system of taxation.

The life and times of the last great American hipster

Sammy Davis, Jr. (1925-90) rose from childhood stardom on the vaudeville stage to become one of the most famous African American entertainers of the 1950s and '60s (and the only black member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack). At the same time, he spent most of his career surrounded by controversy and ridicule--over his affairs with white film stars like Kim Novak and Jean Seberg; his 1960 marriage to Swedish actress May Britt; his conversion to Judaism; his closeness to the Kennedys and, later, Richard Nixon; and his problems with alcohol and drugs.

Davis comes alive in this collection of writings about him, including a 1966 Playboy interview by Alex Haley; an excerpt from the 1983 autobiography of porn star Linda Lovelace; profiles from The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, and The Saturday Evening Post; and articles from many prominent African American periodicals. The Sammy Davis, Jr. Reader is a composite portrait of a complex, self-conscious man and the society that treated him, for more than forty years, with passionate ambivalence.

If you're interested enough in Sammy to have read "Yes I Can" and "Why Me?" (or at least the compiled "Sammy: an Autobiography"), then this book is an absolute must. Any autobiography is bound to have a flattering slant, but this collection tilts the balance back to level.

Editor Gerald Early offers a lengthy foreward which, at first, I thought a bit self-indulgent until I began to grasp the depth of affection he feels for his subject. Don't skip this foreward; it gets better in the later sections.

The writings in the collection are taken from various autobiographies and other texts about the era, and are insightfully organized. This book is not thoughtlessly thrown together; this is clearly a labor of love. In the first 50 pages alone I had enough of my personal Sammy myths dispelled to recommend the book. I can't help but think how I would have felt had I been the editor. The book certainly doesn't try to slam Sammy, but it does offer the bad along with the good, and it can't have been a painless decision to include some of this material. The excerpt from his daughter's book is particularly revealing, and the bit from Linda Lovelace's autobiography is nothing short of disturbing.

Sammy's own tellings of his life story are far from entirely flattering, but this excellent book brings the legend down from even that level, down to where we all live. Sammy was not a perfect man. He was a masterful entertainer. He was a lousy father. He had a heart of gold. He was into some horrifyingly self-destructive behavior. If you love Sammy the artist as much as I do, you owe it to yourself (after reading the autobiography, I think) to read this volume. It's a real eye-opener. And despite the ugly reality it sometimes offers, it hasn't diminished my love and respect for Sammy one bit. Quite the opposite.

                            2 out of 5 stars Disappointment.......2005-12-30

The author certainy had a good idea for the book, ie reconnecting with his estranged father through their common love of gardening, but his execution of the idea really missed the point. He instead chose to mostly write an autobiography in which he made that fatal error common to many autobiographists in assumming that his life minutiae was of the same interest to to others that it was to him. The result is a suprisingly bad book. Given the author's carreer as a journalist, it is really surprising that his book is so unfocused and of such little interest.

Lee May is an excellent southern author. This is the story of reuniting with his estranged father and their mutual interest in gardening, but also is an account of the social changes during one man's life.

                              Book Description

Kim Chernin's mother was a leftist firebrand, an American Marxist at mid-century, when it was dangerous to be one. Her father, a quiet man, was no less radical. Why then, decades later, does their daughter--a liberal California psychoanalyst and writer--find herself drawn toward a spirituality that would have shocked her parents? Through three personal stories, Chernin tackles the questions that pull at all of us: how to make sense in a world whose order isn't always apparent, and how to find balance between the mind and the spirit. "Kim Chernin writes with immediacy and intimacy."--City Life, London.

This book is excellent I think every teenager
should have this book in there library,
it is breath taking, I had to take each
breath slowly, it made me look
within my self, assuming all the
wisdom of the scripts of the bible.

It amazes me how it struck my attention,
and also made me feel how valueable
I was as a woman. The sanctuary of
                                  family, values, and morals, and
the spirit of God which is love.
I recommend this book to parents
for girls as well as boys,
it is definitely the fruits of Gods house.
I think this author is truly
a messenger from God, the value
of the soul weighs the temple of Gods love.
I am looking forward in reading many more
books by this author Jacqueline Amos.
It was well worth taking a trip

WALKING THROUGH MY FATHER'S GARDEN--winner of the 2006 Chapbook Competition awarded by the English Department of the William Paterson University of New Jersey--speaks rhythmically of love, loss, nostalgia and nature. Through careful observation of the world and poignant insight, the poems here nudge readers to an intense yet tender appreciation of life's flesh and spirit.

I was taken by the natural feel John Chorazy has for the subtleties of the poetic craft--he creates and sustains fine rhythms throughout this slim volume. Even more impressive is the meditative spirit present here; one senses the author's keen melancholy presence in the poignant observations and sharp imagery.
