Book Description
This book is the first to tell the story of conservation by local government and private land trusts in California. It describes the remarkable extent to which communities have protected their landscapes and draws lessons for disseminating successful preservation strategies across the country. Using archival research, in-depth interviews with open space advocates in local government and private land trusts, and a telephone survey of over four thousand California residents, Daniel Press describes land preservation efforts pursued by California communities and explains why some have succeeded better than others. Saving Open Space concludes with policy recommendations based on lessons learned from the preservation success stories.

Book Description
Exploring everything from mass psychology to management strategies, Business Cycles pinpoints the theories and practices that affect and reflect economic tides. From the history of business cycles to the arguments of today's leading economists, the book examines all aspects of business cycle theories.
Understanding business cyclesfrom the factors that create them to the economic and financial conditions that underlie their changesis not only an exercise in theory, but more importantly, a practical tool for interpreting and forecasting periods of confidence or crisis. Throughout this volume, business cycle theories are used to illuminate actual events and explain how economists continually redefine the economic picture to address new problems.

A well-documented history of the dismal economic science.......1999-12-28
Lars Tvede has managed to give his readers what most students of economics never get during their studies: a highly readable and entertaining overview about the way economic knowledge has progressed through time, and the way historic events (yes, wars, bubbles, etc.) have shaped the development of economics. The book is well researched and written in a very enjoyable style. If you are tired with short-term GDP forecasts and would like to have a look at the "big picture", this book is definitely for you.
The only reason this book doesn't get five stars are the last chapters about chaos theory, which are a bit "sticky", but nevertheless provide some interesting insights into some of the most recent developements of modern economic theory. Enjoy your reading
Superb!!.......1998-10-11
Well written, clear, conise and informative. The first book on economic history that actually encouraged me to turn the page. The theory is explained clearly, but not simply, and the backgroud is interesting and readable. Even if you have no interest in economics this book is well worth the read, it will give you a fuller understanding of how things work, and why.

Packs a Lot Into a Small Volume.......2004-01-09
This book is just what it purports to be in the preface: a series of stand-alone articles taken from a program presented at the American Academy of Sciences. Therefore, it is not a comprehensive treatment of all foods from the Americas. What it does cover are in-depth chapters on various American foods that the authors deem to be most important, especially in the future. While I didn't find the book difficult to put down between readings, I was always eager to pick it up again.
I am listing the chapter titles here because I think they are an excellent representation of what is actually covered in the book: Europeans' Wary Encounter with Tomatoes, Potatoes, and Other New World Foods; The Renaissance of Amaranth; Vanilla, the Nectar of the Gods; Maize, the Gift from America's First Peoples; Beans of the Americas; The Chili Pepper, and Diffusion of the Domesticated Capsicums Since Columbus; Forgotten Roots (plant roots) of the Incas; The History and Botany of Cacao; Quinoa's Roundabout Journey to World Use; and the Epilogue: Native Crops of the Americas, Passing Novelties, or Lasting Contributions to Diversity.
The book could have been improved by a short section of color photographs of the plants discussed, showing what they are, and how they grow. I didn't know what amaranth was, and had to look it up elsewhere. Even though I have eaten quinoa, other people might not know what it is. But to be fair, the authors come right out and say that this book is far from a comprehensive treatment, and they assume that interested readers can do supplementary research on their own (very easy with an on-line encyclopaedia).
I began this book with a fair background knowledge of the subject; yet, I learned a lot of new information. Some of the most interesting things I learned were many new facts about vanilla; about the two major pathways by which corn was domesticated, and the naming of various corn stalks; how quinoa came to be first grown in Colorado, as the first place outside of the Andes; why quinoa was difficult to grow in Colorado, in spite of it being a high-altitude crop; and about many other interesting and potentially useful root crops from the Andes, which I had never heard of.
Much Needed Contribution.......2000-05-11
A book like this is greatly needed by the americas, since Europe still believes that she has given everything to us. Unfortunately, the book is too short. A broader, more profound history of produce, products, etc that America has given the world is still needed.

A complete introduction.......2005-10-07
This is a great first book in stocks. Before reading this book I didn't know what questions to ask or where to begin investing in the stock market. I especially like this book's ground up approach
1) providing motivation to invest
2) defining stock jargon
3) introducing professional tools and resources
The rest of the book introduces investing strategy, stock analysis, economic trends, and many many other details. I like how the author doesn't seem to be pushing an agenda, but just introducing the tools to be used by both aggressive and conservative investors.
Easy to understand and full of valuable information.......1999-06-26
I was a novice to the financial markets before I read this book. I have successfully used the ideas and principles in this book to improve my investment criteria, and feel much more confident about success in the stock market.

Book Description
Are profits morally justifiable? While neoclassical economists have traditionally endorsed the pursuit of profits, many moral philosophers have challenged profit making on a variety of ethical grounds. Through the lenses of economics, philosophy, and law, these six essays explore the morality of profits from libertarian, utilitarian, and consequentialist perspectives.
Presenting arguments for and against the morality of profit making, the contributors examine the nature of profits and which ethical theories can support them. Two essays address how profits are made: one explores entrepreneurship as a legitimate source of profit, while another argues that recent advances in welfare economics weaken the case for the morality of profits. The other chapters focus on ethical theory, covering the right to profits from economic rent; the morality of how profits are used—those directed toward library or university endowments, for example, are considered morally acceptable—and whether or not profits are deserved.

The Best Tax Advise They Never Give You.......1999-05-20
They have missed the point. When asked by the IRS to conduct an audit of your return, the very best thing to say is, "Is it mandatory or voluntary for me to let you see my private books and records?" Just watch, they will never answer - because it's VOLUNTARY! The courts have said so! It HAS TO BE voluntary, otherwise it would be a violation of your 4th and 5th amendment rights! You NEVER have to let the IRS see your records - even if they send you a summons, all you do is show up and claim the 5th each time they ask a question, or to see a document!! The book never tell you this!! So it is ultimately not helpful.
What Happened to the Bill of Rights?.......1999-04-09
If you want to protect yourself against the IRS, you should start by asking why you need the protection to begin with. Books like this are all about trying to "play the game" as shrewedly as you can. This is absurd, since you're playing odds as much as you are playing the game. the IRS doesn't care about you or the Constitution, it cares about quotas and scaring you into submission.
Freedom is your birthright as an American. SEIZE IT! Read "Freedom in Chains" by James Bovard and "Your Money or your Life" by Sheldon Richman and "Why we mustAbolish the income tax" by Nelson Hultberg. These books point the way to freedom rather than more pointless submission.

The Elvis Bible A Must Have.......2007-10-17
of all the 1,000 of volumes written about the life of Elvis, this collection....A Life In Music, stands alone as the best and really the only must have.It chronicles every Elvis recording session from his start at sun to the very end of his career. It takes you inside every session and gets you,in a sense, inside the mind of the greatest songman ever. This is the Elvis Bible and I absolutely love mine.It is the definitive work on Elvis.
Essential Elvis.......2007-05-27
Great book. Honest - not sleazy, not pandering. The sessions are fascinating, the studio people and musicians that mattered get their dues and the hard slog behind making it all sound so good, (as well as the causes behind the otherwise inexplicable trash) becomes clear. This one's for the music.
Simply the best book about the music of Elvis Presley.......2005-12-21
LAST TRAIN TO MEMPHIS and CARELESS LOVE by Peter Guralnick are the books about Elvis Presley's personal life and they really are the reference concerning the man.
A LIFE IN MUSIC is, for the fans and anybody interested in the music business, the reference concerning Elvis Presley's music.
It's all about his records, Colonel Parker's strategies, his attitude in the recording studio, etc...
There is NO OTHER BOOK as good as this one concerning Elvis's music. Everything is here, year by year: record sales, chart positions, recording sessions dates and locations. And it's only a part of it.
Ernst Joegersen, the author, is the man who resurrected Elvis's catalogue at BMG/RCA (now SONY) from the early 90's until now. He has gathered information concerning all this since 1973 and now he is the main authority about Elvis's music.
If you like Elvis and his music, this book is an amazing source of information.
Essential.......2005-07-28
If you are interested in his studio recordings and how they were put together this book takes you through every session. A great journey. Read the book as you listen to the music!
Repito: ESENCIAL.

A French-American Story.......2003-12-07
Mr. Leprince is a proud Frenchman who has lived in the United States for over 40 years. His story about the years under Nazi occupation is a fascinating account and well worth it. A good read especially in these irrational times.
Vive la Patriot!.......2003-07-19
From start to finish, this personal memoir of a young man, coming of age during World War II provides the lucky reader with a first-hand account of what it was like for average person in Nazi-occupied France.
It is the story of Bernard LePrince, his family and friends, first, as they lived before the war, running a small cafe which was the center of social life in their town, and how their spirit, love, family and resilience were tested once France was under Nazi occupation.
It is a story of indomitable spirit and moral victory, as small acts of defiance provided the courage to face another day, and created a patriotic spirit which Mr. LePrince carries with him to this day.
It is simply written, yet full of descriptive detail, making the reader feel part of that time and hopeful that we would have behaved the same way in those circumstances.
