Great, Practical Book.......2005-10-17
This book gives down-to-earth, simple advice to anyone thinking about starting their own firm.
My favorite part was his treatment of investors and other people who "want to help." His stories of how new businesses had been micromanaged to death by investors, particularly lawyers, were priceless and not to be found in other advice books of this type.
If you think you have a chance in starting up your own business in an economy which is, slowly but steadily, getting better, read this book first.

Wise Business Principles That Must Not Be Overlooked !.......2002-10-30
This book is essential for anyone who dares start a business. The reason I say dare is because the general assumption that surrounds "business" is that it's easy to start, and simple to make money. Nothing could be further from the truth. Kevin [the author of Start-Up Market] does an impeccable job of debunking many of the typical myths that circulate out there, and provides fundamental strategies that are required for any start-up venture to succeed. It's a thick book, but that's because Kevin doesn't leave anything out. I've personally used his practical techniques and strategies and found they've made a considerable difference in my business endeavors.

Great guidance for the uninitiated.......2000-10-15
An excellent treatise of all the legal ins and outs of starting your own business of any size, written for the non-lawyer. I first read this from my library, and came back to buy it to be able to keep on hand for repeated reference. Answered all my burning q's about trying to become an independent contractor like: where all might I have to register in my city, county and state, what are the repercussions of different business type choices (sole-proprietor vs LLC, vs Corp, etc.), how to write fail safe contracts and protect your assets, and what things might be tax-deductible once considered to be 'in business' in my home. Well written and semi-humorous (subjective, some may not care for it), but not pandering, either. I give it high recommendation for the person just starting out like me. I finally understand the legal differences between a W-2 employee and an independent contractor from the IRS's point of view.

Overall, I liked this book. The chapters were short and easy to read. I liked the fact that it contained a lot of cases. However, I wish the author had included some analysis to get the reader started.

This book is wonderful. It offers a wide array of topics and combines them with case studies that make the reader reflect on the material in the chapter. Prior experience in strategic management is not required, as the basic concepts are clearly defined.

I initially borrowed this book from our local library. As it was new, you could only take it out for 2 weeks at a time. I made 6 recipies from it the first week and each was wonderful. I should have never told the librarian how great they were because I had to wait 6 weeks to get another shot at borrowing it. So, I got my own copy. My family looked forward to each new creation. In particular, the Bacon,Lettuce,& Tomato and tortillini soups were excellent, as well as the mushroom chicken thighs and turkey tetrazinni. The pumpkin soup combines some strange things (coconut milk and chili powder) but the flavors blend into something unusual and wonderful. So far, every recipe is a winner, and I think that is pretty unique in a cookbook. I am buying extra's for Christmas.
Slow Cooking for Fast Times.......2003-11-11
By Bill Marsano. When the Rival company introduced its Crock Pot about 30 years ago, it was an instant hit--but it soon drew criticism on two fronts. One problem was that careless people who cooked for too short a time at too low a temperature had turned it into a germ-breeding device, making a few people sick. That problem does not occur if folks will follow the admirably clear and simple directions provided by the author of this book.
There were also somewhat snooty complaints about crock cuisine being a bit low class--the sort of stuff to be found at church socials, covered-dish suppers and even tailgate picnics. Well, that is in part true--but so what? Slow cooking is what our grannies did when they pushed their cast-iron pots of beef stew to the back burners of their woodstoves and let them simmer for most of the day. I know I always wanted seconds. Didn't you?
The secret to slow cooking is good ingredients, which you can get with ease, and good recipes, which you can get in this book, written by an expert with two previous crock-pot books to her credit.
Now I will admit that we are not talking haute cuisine here. These are practical, stick-to-your-ribs dishes for enthusiastic eaters. At the same time they are not simple, boring, one-note recipes. Ms. Pye shows no fears of herbs and spices, which she uses frequently ("season liberally!" she cries). That gives her entree to many of what we call 'ethnic' cuisines (Oriental, Russian and Indian among them). Let me add, too, that Pye's not necessarily devoted to culinary authenticity. Recipes such as risotto without rice and polenta tamale pie are more about creativity or maybe even desperation than anything else. Still, there are plenty of recognizable dishes here, well rendered, and some real innovations. (I confess it never occurred to me that I might make a cheesecake in a crock pot.)
Busy people--parents with kids and schedules or singles cooped up in offices till dark--can benefit from slow cooking. If they use this book to make one or two meals a week they'll save money, eat better and feel better. Another good thing about the slow cooker is that its safety (no open flame, generally low temperatures) makes it a great way to start the kids learning their way around a kitchen. (Given the chance, most kids actually love cooking.)
The recipes are clearly written and presented one to a page on non-reflective paper. Thisd is a practical, useful book.--Bill Marsano has done most of the cooking for his family over the past few years, and they seem none the worse for it.

It's more about Chuck Connors in front of the camera..........2007-10-19
What can I say? Very disappointed by the little bit of information there is about the man. It was obvious the author admired Chuck Connors greatly, leaving one feeling like they just read a very long and very expensive commentary from a passionate fan rather than from a professional writer with a more objective view. After his sports stats, it was mostly a filmography detailing the plot of almost everything Connors did in front of the camera. Not very much about the man as an individual. The comments from other actors who worked with him read more like they were written by press agents. Having made his name as The Rifleman, I expected a little background about his prep for the role. It was never even mentioned if Chuck Connors could really shoot straight!
Lots of Pictures!.......2005-12-28
I found this book to be mostly a sports biography. The years in CC's life when he was a professional athlete were covered in minute detail. The years of acting mentioned the titles, but often glossed over the projects. There was very little mention of his interactions with family.
There were plenty of photos, mostly professional stills. Almost no candid shots.
This book was a quick, breezy read.

That singular way one person cares for and remembers another is at the spiritual core of this book. What does a son inherit from the men in his family when there are few conversations? Miller compares his life and his dreams to that of his older brother, and maps out the goals for his own future as he marries, has his own children, and embarks on his career as a poet. He punctuates the story with the gracious voice of his older sister, Marie, as he imagines how the family might have looked to her. Marie carries the secrets and stories that filter down to the younger son as rumors and tales. She becomes a source of information and verification of the family history. Using a network of subtle references to religion, classical and jazz music, basketball and baseball, as well as motifs from literary works, Miller provides a number of avenues by which a broad spectrum of readers will be able to enter and inhabit his poignant text.

A gift from heaven.......2002-06-18
If I had received this book five years ago, it would have saved me five years of pain and confusion. Fathering Words is the tangible witness of a man's journey into and through his writing life. Unlike many writing memoirs, it is not a how to, or even a how, but a detatched narrative of his life as a poet. He is eerily objective about the mistakes and choices he has made, and uses occasional passages from his sister to broaden the view he gives the reader.
I learned more about the writing process, more about the yearning that true writers feel, and more about the lack of understanding that non-artists have about the whys and wherefores. If you know an African-American man who yearns to "father words", buying this book for him will be the best show of support you can give him.

Fathering Words is a deeply moving memoir. Ethelbert Miller's description of his father will remain with the reader for a very long time. His decision to write the book using both his and his sister's voice is unique and it works.It's definitely a keeper.
Poetic Fathering.......2000-11-01
This book is so beautifully written, so touchingly direct that I called Howard University to search out the author and tell him what a compelling book he had written. Anyone who is a father, about to be a father or contemplating being a father (whether African-American or not) will find this book touching in what it says about the frequently mute love between fathers and their sons. African-Americans families are often love mutes like Mr. Miller's-- too busy working, too focused on the quotidien to express love outside provision of food and shelter. Out of such silent, seemingly fallow ground, E. Ethelbert Miller heaps up words of love and power, fathering not only his own father, but his whole family in some of the most poetic prose you will ever read.
