No matter what time of year it is, small-business owners and operators must keep atop their tax situation. For more than two decades, author and attorney Frederick Daily has taught entrepreneurs the ins and outs of the tax code and offered suggestions to help them remain in the black and out of hot water with the IRS. The revised third edition of his Tax Savvy for Small Business contains dozens of these tips along with real-life examples that show how they are used in comparable situations. --Howard Rothman

      Book Description

Knowing the ins and outs of the tax code is vital to the health of every small business. Virtually every decision a business makes has tax consequences that can affect its bottom line --and the IRS is always watching.

Fortunately, Tax Savvy for Small Business provides valuable strategies that will free up your time and money for what counts: running your business, and running it effectively.

Tax Savvy for Small Business explains how to:

      *deduct current and capitalized expenses

      *write off long-term assets

*write off up to $24,000 of long-term assets each year

*compare the advantages of different legal structures

      *take advantage of fringe benefits

*keep records that will head off trouble with the IRS

*get tax breaks from business losses

      *pay payroll taxes on time

      *deduct home-office expenses

*negotiate payment plans for late taxes

      *handle an audit

*get IRS penalties and interest reduced

      *maximize retirement funds

*use retirement funds as a tax break

Completely updated, the 6th edition covers the Job Creation and Worker Assistance Act of 2002, which includes depreciation and net operating loss rules that will help your bottom line. The book also provides the latest tax numbers, rules, forms and publications.

5 out of 5 stars This Book Saved Me .......2004-09-10

I bought this book as soon as I was notified of an upcoming IRS audit. The sections on reconstructing logs and receipts really saved me. The auditor accepted everything that I reconstructed. I also knew exactly what to expect at the audit. I am now keeping my records in a way that leaves me unafraid of the IRS anymore. This book, along with Mr. Daily's "Stand Up To the IRS" is the best investment I have ever made in my small business.

      5 out of 5 stars A Great Buy.......2004-06-19

I am fan of the nolo.com website and I am a bigger fan of the Nolo Books. We started our software company as and LLC and turned it into a corporation a couple of years ago. I didn't buy this book before that point, but wish I did. Either way it is great that I have the book now. The book is well organized and I read through it cover to cover originaly. Tax Savvy now sits on my desk and I can use it as a quick reference. I am the kind of person that likes to know the "what, how and why" before I talk to our accountants or our lawyers, and this book enables me to do that. Bottom line... a must have

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2004-05-18

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! This book has saved my business thousands of dollars! Amazingly it is both comprehensive and accessible. Daily is hugely knowlegable and a great writer. He lays out strategy after strategy to minimize wasted time and maximize profit. I thought I knew what I was doing before but this book has opened up whole new worlds of opportunity for me. I better learned what I can and can't deduct, how to take advantage of fringe benefits, how to reduce IRS penalties and much more. Tax Savvy for Small Business is literally worth its weight in gold.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent overview - concise and to the point........2003-08-11

This guide is different from the many tax guides out there from big names like Ernst & Young, etc. because it is more focussed on small businesses and you get the most relevant information in the most concise fashion. There in lies the limitation of this great book. You may have to refer to the other tax guides if your particular situation is too unique.

But the conciseness and focussed approach was extremely helpful in clarifying a lot of points for me. I had tried reading several of the bigger guides (with three times as many pages as this book) and gotten confused because it was too much information. So when I saw the Nolo guide, I was pleasantly surprised that every topic in the book was relevant to me as a small business owner! It was perfect for my needs. I now started understanding the very same topics I had so much difficulty following in the other books. For example - I was trying to research the differences between S Corporations and LLCs. When I opened this Nolo guide, I went straight to the chapter on LLCs and read the section - Comparing LLCs with Other Entities. In one sentence I knew the difference between these two entities! According to the book, the basic difference being that you can allocate income and expenses disproportionately (to share ownership) in an LLC but not in a S Corporation! Wow! I liked the speed with which I could find this critical piece of information I was researching.

The book is divided into 6 parts - The Basics (Business Income and Tax Deductible Expenses, Recordkeeping and Accounting, etc.), The Form of Your Business (Sole Proprietorships, Partnerships, S Corporations, etc.), Thinking Small (Family Businesses, Microbusinesses and Home-Based Businesses), Fringe Benefits (Retirement Plans etc.), Buying or Selling a Business, and Dealing with the IRS. There isn't a single page that is irrelevant.

If you have very advanced questions, you are better off looking through a bigger book but you would benefit tremendously by reading this book first. It will give you a firm grounding in the basics across the board. Good luck!

5 out of 5 stars Good ways to save tax dollars.......2002-09-03

This book not only explains deductions but offers good ideas for saving tax dollars. Highly recommended for folks that have some accounting or tax knowledge. Excellent reference if you're thinking of starting a business, or you already have.

          Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Unbelievable, bad and unbelievably bad.......2006-09-19

I can't believe all these positive reviews! It was readable, but hardly exciting, profound or wondrous. In fact, parts of it were laughable. An elk that thinks he's Elvis? Give me a break! A man who may be "part fish?" Yeah, right.

Then there's the ambiguity surrounding the character Jina. Why does she spell her name like that? Is it just exoticised Italian, or something more? I happen to know that Ji-na can be a Korean women's name, and there are hints that she might be Asian, but this needs to be made clear long, long before the book ever goes to print. And don't even get me started on the requisite Arab bad guy.

A nice "pitch" novel, full of elements designed to appeal to readers. In terms of achieving something as a novel, though, it's a mess.

5 out of 5 stars As emotionally satisfying as Class IV rapids in the most gorgeous locale........2005-08-30

With the deft touch of a modern day Socrates, and the gentle understanding of your oldest friend, Ms. Yorke asks us to consider whether we can be satisfied with an unexamined life. She introduces us to a wonderfully varied set of women friends, their endearing mates and their children, at a time when one of the friends appears to have betrayed all of them by revealing their pasts in a bestselling novel. Yet as each character reflects on the mistakes he or she has made and begins to face fears that have grown larger over time, each character learns to accept his or herself, forgive, and strive to attain and retain what's really important. The interactions between the adults and the boys are particularly wonderful, reflecting the hope, fear, love, pride, self-restraint, and occasional doubt we can't help but feel as we try to raise and release the young men who are so much a part of our souls.

The Secret Lives of the Sushi Club is also an exciting pageturner, leaving you wondering until very near the end if the misguided and guilt-ridden religious zealot will actually strike out at the infidels he likes.

In a red state/blue state nation, it's delightful to find an author of Ms. Yorke's calibre, who not only sees shades of gray, but can make a cogent argument for appreciating friends with different interests, religions, and political beliefs. She advocates a big tent, and knows where to draw the line.

I'd encourage men and women alike to buy this book and allow themselves the time to read it. You'll feel as if you've entered another world. Your new best friends are more than a little hard to leave behind. Just don't be surprised if they whisper a few suggestions in your ear, before you close the book.

5 out of 5 stars The Current of Change.......2005-08-15

I have read all of Christy Yorke's books, and each one has taken me to a unique place of both physical and spiritual wonder. In her latest novel, Christy takes us deep into the rugged terrain and raging waters of Idaho's Salmon River. This is her most driven story yet, faster-paced, white-knuckled reading at times, yet still maintains the qualities Yorke is known for, like her complex, often contradictory characters, and majestic, humbling landscapes.

Christy's books always provoke empathy and introspection, but this is the first time I felt mortal fear. Walls of water (and fire) that could swallow you in a heartbeat, and the troubled humans who couldn't resist, the contrast between the sovereignty of nature and the wandering will of humankind was daunting indeed. People came to the river to heal, and sometimes the river decided to end the suffering quickly. Others emerged a new person, as if their true self had been waiting for them on the water. You never knew where the current would take you.

This time we have four main characters to enjoy, as well as numerous secondary ones, each jumping off the page with their vivid stories, the lives that brought them to the river. We even get a look inside the mind of a terrorist. The author is able to provoke true sympathy even for someone so easily written off as pure evil. The river judges everyone equally, and so does the author. Christy Yorke has created another gem, not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars This one goes on the 'keeper' shelf.......2005-08-12

The Secret Lives of the Sushi Club is a fabulous book that stayed with me long after I finished it. It is exceedingly well written and the characters leap off the page, inviting you into their flawed but all too human lives. Everyone can find something in this book that speaks to them, some part of it that you recognize from deep in your soul.

4 out of 5 stars Lighter novel for the author........2005-08-07

I've read Summer of Glorious Madness and Song of the Seals by Christy Yorke, and found both deep, engrossing, and magical. The Secret Lives of the Sushi Club has many of those same qualities, but seems lighter somehow, maybe because it focuses on four main characters instead of one. Still, the author's unique voice is there, as are the beautiful descriptions and deep insights into people's desires and demons. To me, this qualifies as more of a "beach read"--not as demanding but just as enjoyable!

                                Book Description

The long-awaited revision to John Train's classic Dance of the Money Bees--

Survival is competition. What you have, including your savings, others want, and will struggle to get. The push to take it back from you is as relentless as that of the sea to overcome the dikes that contain it or the jungle to enfold a patch of cleared ground. The whole order of nature pushes to reclaim its own. Only through deep understanding and superior tactics can the investor hope to preserve even part of what he has earned, and it gets harder every year…..

In preserving capital the right attitude is indispensable. You must be passive in deciding to buy, but aggressive in searching out the values and in digging all the way down to the rock of reality…..

It usually pays to wait patiently for the rare bargain in first-class assets, rather than keep swinging for the fences with a succession of exciting speculations. Enthusiastic hyperactivity is in fact the hallmark of the losing investor…..

This book, then, is intended to tell the investor what he should be looking for and where to find it.

Taking medical and legal practice as key examples, the authors develop a rigorous articulation and defence of virtue ethics, contrasting it with other types of character-based ethical theories and showing that it offers a promising new approach to the ethics of professional roles. They provide insights into the central notions of professional detachment, professional integrity, and moral character in professional life, and demonstrate how a virtue-based approach can help us better understand what ethical professional-client relationships would be like.

Professionals, it is said, have no use for simple lists of virtues and vices. The complexities and constraints of professional roles create peculiar moral demands on the people who occupy them, and traits that are vices in ordinary life are praised as virtues in the context of professional roles. Should this disturb us, or is it naive to presume that things should be otherwise? Taking medical and legal practice as key examples, Justin Oakley and Dean Cocking develop a rigorous articulation and defence of virtue ethics, contrasting it with other types of character-based ethical theories and showing that it offers a promising new approach to the ethics of professional roles. They provide insights into the central notions of professional detachment, professional integrity, and moral character in professional life, and demonstrate how a virtue-based approach can help us better understand what ethical professional-client relationships would be like.

Alanna Nash's biography of Colonel Tom Parker uncovers a life story even more complicated, dark, and entertaining than that of the promoter's greatest talent, Elvis Presley. Nash had unique access to the Colonel and many of those closely connected to him in assembling the facts that underlie her narrative, and the book reads like a mystery as it probes the origins of Parker's power.

Ultimately, Parker was protecting himself in his manipulation of Elvis, Nash argues. Though her evidence is not conclusive, she suggests that Parker (born Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk) feared deportation his entire life, but, more importantly, he may have fled his native Holland in 1929 after committing murder. In America Andreas transformed himself into Tom Parker while immersing himself in the worlds of the carnival and circus. This work led him to the promotion of musical acts and, eventually, the creation of his greatest mass entertainment and merchandising bonanza, Elvis. Elvis would become a shield against the demons of Parker's past and resource to fuel his insatiable appetites.

Parker's life remains shrouded to a large degree, despite Nash's efforts. The narrative is at times sensational in its attempts to dramatize the malign aspects of Parker's character, and those coming for a definitive answer as to the cause of Elvis's self-destruction will find new light, but no final answers. Yet, Nash's biography will likely remain the best picture we will ever have of the mysterious Tom Parker, and fans of Elvis will appreciate this insider's view into their hero's rise and fall. --Patrick O'Kelley

                                    Book Description

A meticulously researched biography, this story profiles "The Colonel" Tom Parker, the man behind Elvis Presley, in a compelling new light. Filled with startling material found in never-before-seen documents, including Parker's army records, psychiatric evaluations, and police reports, this investigation challenges even the most familiar aspects of the Presley saga. Parker, who handled every aspect of Elvis Presley's career and much in his personal life, is revealed as an overwhelmingly selfish man who sought to hide his own illegal alien status rather than further the art of a great musician. Astonishing and impeccably written, this entertaining book proves that the only figure in American popular culture as fascinating as Elvis Presley is Colonel Tom Parker, the man who shaped Elvis, and in turn shaped music history.

                                    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best rock management biography ever written.......2005-01-29

The title including the word "Extraordinary" is fully justified. I thought this book would be a "dishing the dirt" epic on Parker but it turns out to be a very well researched lifetime biography of the Colonel's life and not just his involvement with Elvis.

The well told story is of a man who from poor beginnings in Holland was involved in a murder there and forced to flee to the USA at an early age. He then spent his life as an illegal immigrant with that dark secret.

His early struggles with poverty in the 1930s and 1940s including being discharged from the army with mental illness, sets the scene for a man who revitalised his childhood fascination with fairs and carnivals, which were a major circus in the Americas of that period. All the man's later business cunning and marketing skills were learnt in that "carny" environment of deceit, overstatement, advance promotion and getting the cash in any deal as soon as possible to survive. He clearly retained a soft spot for this teaching ground all his life.

His first major music involvement came with country star Eddy Arnold who he fell out with when Arnold found him doing personal side deals. With no real appreciation of music ever, he became aware of the early Elvis and the storm he was creating in the South and took control under an initial contract that fully reflected Parker's approach all his time in managing Elvis of keeping it simple and balanced in his favour.

The view established by the book is that while the Colonel (a title obtained by politial hucksterism and not from his army days) always looked after Number One and was continually doing side deals that personally benefitted him not his client, the usual Elvis fan's view of the Colonel being a parasite is certainly challenged-

                                    - the fan mania developed across 1956 and subsequent years including manipulation of the RCA label and TV was unprecedented and owed a lot to the flair of Parker to do things differently in the face of others historic approach to how to promote pop stars;

                                    - Elvis's enlisting into army service and his "protected" life in Germany plus a controlled keeping in the public eye across those years may owe more to the manipulation of Parker;

                                    - the much derided series of Elvis movies in the 1960s together with their hit singles and dross LPs may in retrospect have actually protected Elvis from live performance and a decline in popularity esp. with the advent of the Beatles plus given his lifelong poor approach to financial matters kept him earning a steady stream of income in that period;

                                    - the return to live performance while driven by Elvis was taken to a new level by Parkers' approach to concert promotion, both in Las Vegas and across the USA.

However, the book does not flinch from the downsides of the man's personality and approach to business, especially his endless paranioa, bullying and control by fear over all those who worked with him; his ensuring limited access and opportunities being shown to Elvis by others (notably his failing to allow his development as an actor in serious roles); his Las Vegas deals fuelled by his increasing addiction to gambling and not Elvis's best interests at the hands of the casinos, and due to his illegal immigrant status his unwillingness to ever allow foreign tours by Elvis which in the later years could have been major revenue earners for him.

The sad conclusion is that Parker given his personality always saw himself as the person in charge and Elvis his instrument and that Elvis's success and earnings were down to the Colonel's skills and negotiations not Elvis's talents. The reality demonstrated endlessly is that Elvis and his family (especially his father) were never going to challenge Parker, given their lack of financial acumen and extravangant spending laid them open to continual manipulation. Parker in turn given his personality was unable to help as Elvis's deline under drugs gathered pace and the inevitable happened.

The post Elvis years show a man who was still driven by the self benefitting deal and his manipulation of the Elvis estate, with the sad endgame as he gambled ceaslessly of a man who earned an estimated $100 million plus from his relationship with Elvis but at death had less than a million dollars in assets.

This is by far the best rock management biography that I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars A FASCINATING STORY OF A VERY FASCINATING MAN.......2004-08-26

If you're interested in Colonel Thomas Andrew Parker, this is THE book for you. This story took years and many man-hours of exhaustive research to bring to fruition. By now, most Elvis fans are well aware that Parker was an illegal Dutch immigrant by the name of Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk. But until now, relatively little was known of his life in the 'old country.' We learn that a woman was brutally murdered in Parker's hometown in Holland on the very day of his disappearance. Did he commit the dastardly deed and abscond to America? Of course, we'll never know, but it's an interesting theory, nonetheless. It appears that the old boy may have been asexual. If so, this might explain his aversion to being touched. Though Parker earned mega-millions during his lifetime, he left behind a relatively modest estate. Of course, the same can be said of Elvis. Parker's addiction was gambling, while Elvis simply overspent on virtually everything. They were both masters at profligate spending. The Colonel seemed to possess a "Jekyll/Hyde" personality, displaying acts of kindness and generosity to loyalists and cruelty to others. The Eddy Arnold years are very interesting indeed. Parker and Eddy were opposites, and Parker's taste for ostentation sometimes clashed with Eddy's more conservative tastes. The story of Parker moving in with the Arnolds is hilarious. Alanna Nash is a very gifted writer and unless I'm mistaken, this is her third Elvis-related book. "Revelations" is still the best Elvis book I've ever read. I've never had the pleasure of reading the Alan Fortas book, which I believe she ghost-authored, though I hear it's excellent. Her latest book is an intriguing read which I finished in one day. I simply couldn't put it down. The phrasing, the meticulous research and the fascinating enigma that was Tom Parker all come together quite nicely. Buy this book. I promise you'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any Elvis fan!!.......2003-12-11

I read this book a few days after receiving it. It was excellent. Nash has a very special gift. Having read just about everything about Elvis I could get my hands on over the years, I thought I knew it all. It seems most of the books I have read are saying the same stuff. THE COLONEL is full of thorough research and info I had never read before. I loved it. I knew Parker was different, but I had no idea how different. He sounds a bit twisted. He also sounds very misunderstood. And not very happy. Nash should should be very proud of what she's accomplished with the book. I
suspect she has enough material about her actual conversations with him for
another book. I hope she writes it.

                                    3 out of 5 stars A bit far-fetched, but an interesting read.............2003-12-03

A biography on such a secretative person as Colonel Parker is interesting in and of itself. I found the first chapters of this book highly speculative, however, and not at all persuasive regarding the evil lurking in Col. Parker's past. However, the info within the book does shed some light on the Colonel's personality, his personal make-up and his mastery of promotion. I learned a lot about his approach, his philosophy and his perceptions of Elvis as he directed one of the most talented people ever. Anyone interested in Elvis would find this book entertaining, though troublesome, as the Colonel's practices are uncovered. The Colonel was always there pulling his magical strings and I now better understand how he played his part. Some of the information is disturbing and pretty cold hearted. At the same time, look at the great success he made of his client. One has to wonder what Elvis would have been without the Colonel .........after reading this I felt I was reading a Shakespearian tragedy.......as the main players self-destructed.........still I can make a little more sense of it all from reading this book. Elvis fans, beware, after reading this book I felt sad for him and not quite as sympathetic for the Colonel............

5 out of 5 stars A True Depiction of Andreas' Heart.......2003-12-01

In all of my Elvis journeys I have been waiting for a long time for a book that depicts the true hidden world of Colonel Parker (aka Andreas) and his relationship with Elvis. The research and conclusions of Alanna regarding his inner secrets are extraordinarily accurate. As a professional singer myself I must admit I would give anything to have had such a dedicated and talented manager like Col. Parker; but, without having to pay the price that Elvis did. I'm certain that if Elvis had read this book he would have agreed with its conclusions. And in my opinion, Col. Parker would probably have never made a name for himself without Elvis Presley.

This book would also be a great read for those in power in the music industry, and the wannabees that litter the entertainment landscape.

Outstanding research and scholarship. Thank you Alanna!

I found this book amazingly trite. To me, most of the episodes sounded like they came out of a Hallmark TV movie. Furthermore, her memoirs were so boring! To write an autobiography, surely your life should have been more interesting than this? Ms. Gingher has had a nice life and through the book it is obvious that she is very pleased with it. Her life, however does not merit an entire book nor the reader's time.

4 out of 5 stars The gentle art of story-telling.......2001-11-27

This is the first time I've felt compelled to write my opinion on Amazon. I really enjoyed this book - and when I read the review by `a reader from Atlanta, GA.' I thought for sure it had to be written by some malcontent... I laughed to think it might have been the author's ex? Or his wife?

Why can't "we" allow someone to remain positive in their attitude towards life even though they perhaps have made wrong decisions, or happen to have the misfortune of being "born lucky" ;-) Why can't "we" allow someone to just share things at face value without dissecting them and rearranging them and putting them back together in a gruesome pattern?

Yes there was and is racism in America. Yes death and discomfort is a part of life. The author acknowledges all of this, and does a good job of explaining how difficult it is for a child to witness the incongruities of life, and yet still "get on with it".

I was born in Michigan in 1956. I was not as lucky as the author, in that my parents were divorced when I was two, but many of the things she spoke of reminded me of my childhood and how there was no shame in being simple at that time. I appreciated her ability to write about events in such a way as to truly carry me back to that time.

I suppose `a reader' would prefer a story where the author undergoes hypnotherapy and all her ills can be traced back to a sexual molestation from her childhood that never occurred? But then, that book has already been written! Many times!

This is simply a nice book. To me, it shows Gingher as someone who definitely knows the gentle art of story-telling.

This charming account of life warmed me, mostly because Gingher writes it in the moment. She is able to capture the untainted memories, the way she first experienced them, as if she keeps them wrapped in paper in a cedar chest. She allows us to see her shift as she becomes older, lay a more seasoned view on her experiences as her life progresses, and I love how her earliest tales are told as she probably told them back then. I found her accounts believable and beyond intersting, her details startlingly fresh, all tinged with humor. A happy childhood is not an unfulfilling one - it is filled with risks, heartbreak, and danger because this is the nature of all human life. Gingher has chronicled such a life and does so with such style that I marveled as much at her description and control as I did the stories themselves. This is a treasure.

                                      3 out of 5 stars A Girl's Life ... horses, boys, weddings & luck.......2001-08-14

The author sets out to "confess to having had simply a happy childhood that led forward to an adult life of fulfillment and well-being, even without Prozac." A self-proclaimed optimist, she may accomplish this goal, but only on paper. Several memories included in this writing betray the happiness as it is presented. Surrounded by racism, poverty and illness, the author admits her own luck at having been born into a prosperous family, which played a key role in sparing her from personal misfortune. Yet she is successful in maintaining this happiness in writing primarily because she fails to explore issues. Her lush detail offers no depth; it is all physical and not psychological or emotional. Though it's easy to imagine that this female character as a child rarely left any one field unexplored, as an adult writer she revels in language more than theme. Much is said, little happens and even less insight is offered. In this book, childhood is revered; adulthood is glossed over. As an adult, the author admits to having had an unhappy marriage and getting divorced, so the "fulfillment and well-being" she proclaims to have achieved falls short of most girls' aspirations. Rather, this claim sounds like wishful thinking; she fails to convince that she feels whole with career and motherhood alone. Also disturbing is the suggestion that her happy childhood may be to blame for her failed marriage; that perhaps her parents loved her too much, that she had "happiness to burn." Ultimately, this text asks a question that is never answered: How long can happiness survive, even in the 'best' of families? As children of divorce--their mother is so aggravated by the sight of her ex-husband that she lurks in the shadows to avoid confrontation in a place where they might have crossed paths--one wonders if the author's own children will look back on their childhoods as being as happy as the author remembers her own to be. The writing style is steeped in self-awareness. Readers who are also writers, however, will appreciate her insight into the writing life--specifically her drive to write and an insightful commentary on the craft of autobiography. And her skill at lyrical description is impressive. I give this book three stars because it is a pleasant, quick read, even if somewhat flat. A final distraction, however, is that the printed text includes numerous typographical errors.
