A bridge from theory to practice.......2004-03-12

Grint's general approach is given in a sort of mission statement in the introduction. The book is written for those people who find current management orthodoxies to be inadequate and who are interested in alternative ideas. They should be interested in how these might be applied to management practice; but they will not want "theoretical books about theory". He seems envisage this constituency as being the classic MBA-type student, who is at the same time a practicing manager. Thus Grint's aim is to provide a bridging work between the worlds of academia and practical management. The book is not written as a practical manual of management. A number of real-life examples from the literature are briefly described to illustrate the points; but there are no case studies, or anecdotes based on Grint's experience (he is a career academic). The approach is academic, though the tone is light. The content is best described as suggestive, rather than comprehensive.

First Grint introduces the idea of `fuzzy thinking', based on work in set theory and mathematical logic. The idea that this is the most appropriate type of thinking for real-world management problems is the primary message of the book. Grint goes on to look at change programmes, chaos and evolutionary theory, actor-network theory, leadership and appraisal, risk management, and negotiating theory. In each case he applies his fuzzy thinking perspective.

A bridge between theory and practice.......2004-03-12

Grint, though by no means providing a manual of managing under uncertainty, does add a dose of realism not found in many popular management texts on the one hand, or academic literature on the other. Furthermore, some of his suggestions are consistent with recent developments in management theory and practice, implying that the book indirectly has value for the practising manager at the level of its specific discussions.

Organized by course, the sumptuously illustrated "Trattoria" focuses on casual dishes as served in neighborhood restaurants throughout Italy.

Appetizers include crostini, bruschetta and grilled shrimp wrapped in prosciutto and zucchini. First courses include classics like lasagna Bolognese and Tuscan vegetable soup as well as an elegant, time-consuming eggplant and walnut ravioli in tomato-pesto sauce.

Main courses offer a similar range, from Neapolitan-style braised beef Braciole or duck with Vin Santo to swordfish rolls stuffed with shrimp. And for dessert - Tiramisu, plum cake or sweet gorgonzola with baked figs and honey. This balanced presentation is capped with accompanying photographs of the finished dishes which are absolutely irresistible. Also included is a chapter of basics - pasta making and stocks.

If you're like me, hearing the word "tax" is almost as much a turnoff as paying one. Yet here in this slender book I learned not only what I should know and think about my own taxes but also what I should insist our government do about my taxes and everyone else's. A couple of examples -- I found a sane path to a health insurance program that would help me and most people I know; in six short pungent pages I saw how Social Security can be fixed; I learned what I should tell Congress to do about home equity, the poor, my single son's struggle to keep his head above the tax waters while he's building a career, my aunt's pension problems, the college loans that often hurt more than they help. I could go on and on but you get the idea -- this book is a must for virtually everyone I know. It's so true that tax policy is social philosophy, and John O. If anyone actually knew about this book, it could become a classic. I've read many different memoirs, including many mental illness memoirs, and this is probably the most entertaining one I've come across yet. Conner has a minimalistic writing style that I find very appealing, and the story moves at a very fast pace, in stark contrast to the boring drivel in books such as A Million Little Pieces and Prozac Nation. In comparison, most of the other mental illness memoirs are pretty bad, such as Electroboy, Detour, and Burn. I rank Fevers up there with the finest mental illness memoirs, such as Girl Interrupted and An Unquiet Mind.

Potential danger for bipolar disorder patients.......2005-09-15

As someone who has battled bipolar disorder for over 40 years (onset at age 13), I find it appalling that someone as "smart" as Mr. Conner (1510 on his SAT, near-perfect grades, "high" GRE scores, etc.) would pit his own knowledge against that of trained psychiatric professionals by indiscriminately starting-stopping-reducing dosages of meds. No wonder he cycled so frequently and so severly as he did. He states that he was running out of treatment options after having tried only Prozac, Zoloft, Wellbutrin, Effexor, Lithium, Depakote, Neurontin, two tricyclics and Zyprexa. When he's tried 34 meds, ECT and participated in a clinical trial (NIMH), as I have, to try to find a "cocktail" that works, then he'll be qualified to make that statement. I bought this book to be part of the library of a depression and bipolar support group that I facilitate; however, after reading it, I feel that it could foster irresponsible and even dangerous behavior in some very vulnerable people.

an eye opener.......2005-07-29

Fevers of the Mind is a great read that provides an honest narrative on what it means to live with and battle against a mental illness. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a family member or close friend diagnosed with depression or bipolar disease. While many of Conner's anecdotes were entertaining, I finished the book with a profound appreciation for all that he suffered through in his attempts at diagnosing and treating his illness. I imagine many of us have at one point or another fallen into a bleak despair, but reading about Conner's tribulations really put my experiences in perspective. Most importantly, Conner's story provides hope that disabling mental disorders can be overcome with the support of family and friends, meticulous application of the scientific method with regard to treatment, and a good deal of persistence.

Much ado about little.......2003-04-20

I purchased this book hoping to glean some of the author's knowledge of the brain as it relates to bipolar illness. As I pondered though each incident in his very active life I kept waiting for the good stuff. Never found it. Instead I found a few pages of data relating drugs to dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine. If you are looking for a portrayal of manic thinking you will find it here. If you are looking for answers, for a larger perspective, or even new, innovative, leading edge discoveries in the field you will not find it here.

An Excellent Read!!!.......2003-03-08

Having been diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, and being on medications that stunt my ability to focus well enough to read, this was the first book I've been able to read, cover to cover, in over 3 years! I couldn't put it down! I sat down to read it, and didn't get up until I'd read every word! The story of Avery's life is compelling, and holds special interest for me, being a native of his own home town. I particularly liked the casual, conversational manner of Avery's writing, and often felt like the author himself was sitting across from me, telling me his life story.
The information toward the end about the various neurotransmitters helped me form my own theory as to why my disorder presents itself the way it does in me. Although my disorder presents very differently from the author's, it's clear that here is a man with intimate knowledge of the workings of the Bipolar mind.
I was transfixed, and would heartily recommend this book to anyone with Bipolar Disorder, their loved one, or simply someone looking for a hands-on story of the person with the disorder.
I now have a new addition to my list of favorite books.
