      2 out of 5 stars misguided revision.......2007-01-20

I bet the original is interesting and maybe fun to cook from. The revised edition tries to celebrate the history of the original while providing practical updates, but the result is an unsatisfying compromise that is a little like the overcooked vegetables it suggests you make -- bland, flavorless and not all that practical. Did I overextend that simile? Whatever, if you like your food history spliced with depressing 90s-era diet tips and microwave cookery, buy this book. Otherwise, uh, don't.

if you have to buy only 3 cookbooks this should be one of them. Need I say More. My own copy fell apart (1945 edition) was passed down to my. Now I want a replacement.

5 out of 5 stars Best all around cookbook EVER.......2002-12-05

This was my first cookbook forty years ago...it is now frayed, cover gone, corners dog-eared, but the "meat" of the book still in tact. WE STILL USE IT! Now my daughter is 20 and out on her own...so what better gift than her own personal copy! I keep telling her anyone can cook a good meal from this book...it even tells you how to boil water, make coffee. It walks you through making sandwiches to serving a gormet meal. How many cookbooks can bost of that?!!!

5 out of 5 stars 1951:This was my mother's first cookbook after she married ........1999-11-17

This is a fabulous cookbook! I have made many of the recipes and they always come out as they are supposed to come out. Very yummy, and what I like best is that it goes way back and has ties to one of the oldest Jewish communities in the United States. (Although it is not a kosher book).

      2 out of 5 stars A disappointment-.......1999-10-20

I still refer to my original settlement cookbook. I don't like the way the new book is organized. I don't feel as if it is a quick reference guide which I was hoping because that is how I use my first version. Menus aren't simple and don't help me as a working mom.

2 out of 5 stars Title for sales, not reality.......2003-03-04

As others say elsewhere, a book for beginners. However, I have to say that even beginners are going to be mis-lead because the book states one thing and delivers another. The very 1st chapter states the easiest way to beat the market is the simplest and most passive. Buy index mutual funds. The advice is sound, however, what the author promises is not. The problem is this: In buying a index fund, you will never "beat the market". The best you will do is mirror the market and with mutual fund expenses, you will "hopefully" be close to market performance. This approach will NEVER be better than the market. It simply can't. I don't have an argument with the premise of buying index funds. However, the phrase "beat the market" means to do better than or out-perform it. The author apparently interprets this to mean, trail the market or come close to a tie and you beat the market.
Also in the same section, the author recommends further diversification by purchasing 2 or 3 index funds. Diversify your diversified funds? Redundant and ridiculous. Advice for "...people who don't know what they are doing." Warren Buffet
The one good part of this book is that each of the 100 sections starts with a great idea or quote. These I loved. However, of the sections I have read, not a one presents any idea or strategy for "beating the market".
Don't get me wrong, from what I have read, there are some good things to be found here. However, when the author fails to truthfully present or support the basic premise of the book, it makes the whole book suspect. Suggest the reader look elsewhere, (Search- 'Peter Lynch') and the author get a dictionary to look up the meaning of the words, 'beat' and 'mis-represent'.

2 out of 5 stars A book for beginners, or even non investors.......2002-05-27

The 100 ways are actually elaboration of 100 adages of diverse sources from JKF's "How could I have been so mistaken as to have trusted the experts?" to Pope John XXIII's "See everything, overlook a great deal, correct a little".

Some sayings are interesting. Most are quite mediocre, like "Buy low, sell high" "In the long run, it's earnings growth that drives the stock."

I bet that most of the experienced investors or traders, who have read more than two trading books, will be disappointed by this one.

5 out of 5 stars How to function successfully in today's stock market.......1998-10-25

Investors have been getting stock-picking ideas from Gene Walden for much of the last decade. His expertise comes from many books and interviews with market geniuses. Walden has his finger on the pulse and it shows here, as he demonstrates how to put together both active and passive portfolios. He shows beginners how to pick your own stocks, and how to function successfully in today's market.

3 out of 5 stars Nice book, not enough depth.......1998-08-23

Overall I liked his book. It had a saying and a tip on each page. The book was too short and easily digestable. I would have given this book a higher rating if the author had gone more in depth on those 100 tips. This book should have been a 900 page book instead of a 230 page book.

                Book Description

This book is a collection of essays devoted to questions of international business that present fresh road maps to analyze business ethics topics of universal concern.
Peter Earl and Matthew Hirshberg set up the context with accounts of implications of Western economic theory. Ian Grant raises the question of amorality in business. As Patricia Werhane and Alan Singer conclude, though, ethics is embedded in all that we do.
Catherine Casey, Suchitra Mouly, Amelia Smith, Jay Sanakaran, Kate Kearins, Keith Hooper, David Coy, Glynn Owens, and V. Nilakant deal with ethical issues concerning organizational culture, management communication, and employee empowerment, and Ming Singer links moral development to workplace justice.
Four studies of cultural traditions, Alejo Sison's study of the Philippines, Shioji and Nakano's analysis of Japanese traditions, and Wong Wai-Ying and Po-Keung Ip's essays on Confucian ethics find that the underlying value system in each culture strongly influences business.
Stan Godlovitch and Singer conclude the collection, demonstrating that we have made some moral progress in business, politics, and science, as Werhane points out in her essay on environmental sustainability. New mind sets are crucial for moral and material progress, and, they conclude, we are capable of such development.

                Book Description

State tax systems are in trouble. Revenue collecting methods developed more than a half-century ago are facing the strain of dealing with 21st century economies. Globalization and e-commerce are changing the way people work and purchase goods, devolution has steadily shifted responsibility from the federal government to the states, and tax incentives have become the weapon of choice in the battle to attract business investment. All this, in an environment where antitax messages have become a staple of political campaigns, has made creating tax policy more challenging than ever before. In State Tax Policy: A Political Perspective, Second Edition, David Brunori analyzes these and other critical challenges facing state governments. He identifies the important issues and examines possible solutions in formulating and implementing state tax policy. The new edition is updated to reflect five years of legislative changes. The first edition was named an "Outstanding Academic Book of the Year" by Choice magazine.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A great intro but beware of some faulty analysis.......2007-03-11

This book provides a basic overview of state policy and how it is represented through various lenses. Politicians, common people and businesses are all considered. The basic types of state level taxes and the reasons for their collection are all outlined. While sales taxes are among the most important they are also are supplemented by direct federal government grants. There is a lot of useful information here but the reader should be wary. The author makes a lot of opinionated claims and sites only his own work to support them. There are several things in here that are open to dispute and I would use this book as an introduction only. It does do a wonderful job of categorizing all of the issues and giving a springboard for further study. For those interested in public policy this is an essential book to have on hand for framing state tax issues.

1 out of 5 stars No Connection with Reality.......2003-01-20

On page 6 the errors begin. Brunori suggests that the federal government has been funding education. Wrong. The entire book paints a picture divorced from the reality of legislative politics and reveals a total ignorance of the information--from experts and the general citzenry--upon which legislators base their decisions. I speak from 21 years of legislative experience.

5 out of 5 stars Complex State Tax Topics Explained and Analyzed.......2002-06-29

This is an excellent book that takes complex topics of state government taxation and makes them understandable. We learn the abilities and limitations of tax systems that were basically designed in the 19th century and how they respond to 21st century challenges. These are tax systems designed upon a manufacturing economy that has diminished. Along with the devolution of Federal government programs to the states over the past two decades, state governments need to find secure revenue bases to keep state government services operational.
The shifting of public services responsibility to states has awakened the corporate world. 1981 marked the first year that corporations paid more in state taxes than in Federal taxes. Thus, corporations have increased lobbying pressures on state governments. Numerous tax breaks have been afforded to businesses by states.
States find themselves pitted against each other in near-death spirals of competing against each other in offering tax breaks to attract businesses away from other states. Unfortunately, the differences in state taxes have been found to matter little in business location decisions.
State governments have become dependant more upon personal income tax revenues. 1998 marked the first year since the 1930s that revenues from personal sales taxes were greater than revenues from sales taxes. This reflects our changing world, as tax exempt services are an increasing part of our purchases.
The growth in personal income tax share of state tax revenues has been dramatic: it was 9% in 1950 and 19% in 1970 before reaching 34% in 1998. Sales and use taxes account for almost one third and corporate income taxes account for 6% of all state tax revenues. All state tax collections account for about 40% of what states need for their budgets. The rest is gained through federal funds, lotteries, litigation (including the tobacco settlement), license fees, and selling unclaimed properties.
This book shows would state government leaders should do to examine their taxes, reevaluate their policies, and realize where tax burdens falls. This is an excellent book for people wishing to learn the structure of what keep state governments functional.

                  Book Description

The essays in this book treat the relationships among politics, taxation, and the rule of law. A central tenet of democratic ideology is that taxation is something that we choose to do to ourselves, rather than being something that is imposed on us by some ruler. The basic ideology of the American constitutional founding is that government is not the source of our rights of person and property. To the contrary, government is something we establish with our prior rights of person and property to preserve and protect those rights. While it is possible to articulate some intellectual notions about good government and appropriate taxation, it does not follow from the mere fact of this articulation that actual taxation works as articulated. Taxation may be a necessary means of preserving and protecting rights of person and property, but it might also operate in various ways to undermine, abridge, and erode those rights. The central tenet of democratic ideology, a tenet that is reflected thoroughly in the American constitutional founding, is that it is people's prior right to their property that limits the reach of government. This ideology rejects without a second thought any notion that government defines the limits of people's right to property. Yet democratic practice may well contradict and subvert democratic ideology, though the relationship between practice and ideology is not so simple as one being dominant over the other.

From the supplier: Indian states have practiced tax competition to maximize their economic advantages at the expense of other states. States frequently reduce nominal tax rates and provide incentives to induce industries to their areas. This policy consequently imposes tax burdens on other states. The extent of tax disharmony was measured to have a greater variance in comparison with other countries that exhibit similar disharmony.

                          Book Description

Attorney Abraham Lincoln never before had to defend a case like this one. A visitor to Springfield vanishes. Then two brothers are accused of his brutal murder by their younger brother. The good citizens of Springfield seem set on a double hanging. It is up to Lincoln to save the brothers from the gallows. Abraham Lincoln for the Defense is based on an actual murder trial that so intrigued Lincoln that he was still writing about it five years later. Resolution of the case solved one mystery, but it created a greater question that, to this day, remains unanswered. The novel introduces the reader to Lincoln while he is a young attorney developing into the man who will become the great emancipator, a martyred president, and one of the most beloved figures in American history. Standing alone between the Trailor brothers and the hangman's noose is Abraham Lincoln, for the defense.

5 out of 5 stars Go Back to 1841.......2004-10-20

This book brings alive a true story involving Abraham Lincoln as a young lawyer. Warren Bull puts you in close contact with the people and the social attitudes of 1841. You will find yourself smiling, and maybe a laugh, at the humor that is throughout the book.
Warren Bull shows the reader how the law was perilous at times. The story unfolds in a way that keeps the reader in suspense trying to anticipate what will happen next. I couldn't stop reading it and would recommend it to anyone who likes mystery or history.

Warren Bull's "Abraham Lincoln For the Defense" takes the reader to another time and place in our past history. Once you start reading about the actual murder and the trial that ensued, you will not be able to put the book down . One can feel/sense the push from the towns people for satisfaction and vengence. It was interesting to see how society has not changed all that much. So many people push to blame and accuse while not all the facts are brought out. Mr. Lincoln would not relent until he was sure of a fair tail. This was a great book because of the suspense it created and the escape into another time in our history. If you love murder mysteries, this is a must read!

5 out of 5 stars wonderful use of words.......2003-10-25

My book club read this and it generated quite a discussion about how the English language has evolved since Lincoln's time. Older and younger people both had opinions. Some people liked the romance, some liked the suspense and we all enjoyed the Lincoln stories and jokes. I especially liked it that the author included the original letters written by Lincoln that the mystery was based upon.

5 out of 5 stars Witty and entertaining.......2003-09-26

Warren Bull's "Abraham Lincoln For the Defense" is an excellent book to pick up and read when you want that "great escape." The descriptive narratives pull the reader back in time and create an environment that makes one feel as if he or she is living in 1841. There is a cast of characters whose actions illict a wide range of emotions in the reader, from admiration to disgust. And the story is captivating and moves quickly, particularly after the opening events take place.

This trial is unlike any that would happen today because of the speed at which it moves. Part of the thrill is the sense of hasty vengeance that the townspeople encourage in their actions and words, making a "fair trial" quite a challenge for Lincoln and his defendants. Here is evidence of society making quick judgements and demonstrating only too human desire to make "right" from "wrong."

I enjoy books that create suspense, envelope the reader in another time and place, and generate unexepcted consideration of other points of view. Yet this book also contributes to a historic body of knowledge. Through a very pleasant mixture of fact and fiction, Warren Bull has created such a book, and I think readers will enjoy taking this step backwards in time and reflect on the ways human being have changed and yet have not changed at all. An additional plus are the reproductions of documents written by Lincoln and included as optional readings in the Appendix. I enjoyed reading Lincoln's take on the events of the trial after having read the author's interpretation of one possible solution to the mystery.

5 out of 5 stars A step into the past.......2003-09-04

I'm a big fan of books about Abraham Lincoln - from Carl Sandburg's classics to William Safire's "Freedom." Few, if any biographers are able to capture the lighter, wry, and whimsical side of Lincoln, tempered of course with his wisdom in the way Warren Bull is. From the opening exchange with his children, the Lincoln portrayed by Bull is full of humor, warmth, wisdom and, of course, justice. Bull's Lincoln is a folksy young lawyer, not yet a politician and not yet well known outside of Springfield. He is still establishing his reputation as a spellbinding courtroom attorney. The case he is presented in Abraham Lincoln for the Defense is no easy one to defend and is such a true mystery that it continued to puzzle Lincoln years later. The puzzle is only half of the enjoyment of this short novel, however. The author has done a marvelous job of capturing the language and ambiance of the era. Every conversation and every point of view expressed in the story seems to fit mid 1800's America. To read Abraham Lincoln for the Defense is to take a trip into the past. The story is peopled with interesting characters and even includes a romance. And although the case is settled by the end of the novel, the bulk of the details remain a mystery. It's a great read fans of both mysteries and historical novels.

                          5 out of 5 stars America's second King George.......2005-01-11

An eye opener. The Abraham Lincoln we were taught to revere is actually the percursor of Slobodon Milosovic and other like-minded dictators who usurped their authority. Loren shows with unerring proof how Lincoln rode roughshod over the Constitution and the sovereignty of the states and the people. He, acting on behalf of the Federal government, became the sovereign and the people and the states reverted to the status of subjects as in the era of King George before the American Revolution. As Rome under Julius Caesar became ever after a dictatorship so did the United States but in a more subtle way. When the Civil War ended the sovereignty of the states as agreed upon in Philadelpia, the Federal government became the American Sovereign thus ending the short span of true democracy in America. No wonder Booth cried "Sic semper, tyrannis rex!"

William Manchester, more famous for "The Death Of A President", has written a good 20th anniversary volume here. There are some nice photos, as well. Interesting note---he thanks several of the Secret Service agents he spoke to back in 1964-1965, givig one the impression that he may have spoken to them once again (fat chance: Emory Roberts passed away in 1973).

2 out of 5 stars Lightweight hero worship.......2004-06-03

As Manchester is wont to do, he waxes poetic about historical figures he has put up on pedastals. If you are assembling a library devoted to the Camelot myth, this book will be essential to your collection. However, if you are looking for a useful historical examination of JFK, this book will prove to be largely useless. Richard Reeves' "Profile in Power," in print for almost 10 years now, shows that one can avoid hero worship while also avoiding character assissination, and is infinitely more useful to the reader than this fluff. Robert Dallek's far more recent "An Unfinished Life" is also to be recommended far above this.

As Manchester now sheds the mortal coil, one can see that his books on Churchill, MacArthur & Kennedy say a lot more about Manchester than they ever did about their respective subjects. This is a man who seemed to need to have heroes to worship, and he worshipped them most uncritically. He also made a lot of money stoking the fires of hero-worship along the way. However, in the long term it does not make for good history, and as a historian Manchester is rather lacking. I suspect that in another generation, he will virtually forgotten by serious students of history.

2 out of 5 stars A great writer turns JFK into a modern King Arthur..........2003-07-17

Make no mistake, William Manchester (1922-), who knew John F. Kennedy personally, can be a great writer at times. His two-volume biography of Winston Churchill (sadly, never to be completed now that Manchester is aging and ill) is superb, and so is "The Glory and the Dream", his history of the World War Two "G.I." generation from 1932-1972. However, when it comes to the Kennedys, Manchester's tendency to hero-worship simply overwhelms him, and has led to plenty of criticism and controversy over the years. In my opinion, "One Brief Shining Moment" is easily one of the most biased pro-Kennedy books that has ever been written, and is an embarrassment to Manchester's otherwise brilliant career. Manchester doesn't just praise John F. Kennedy is this book, he almost fawns over him, and it's obvious that he sees JFK as a modern King Arthur presiding over a (White House) Camelot. His chapter titles for this book tell it all - "There Thou Layest" is his final chapter in which he specifically links JFK to the Arthurian legends, and indulges in plenty of purple prose. As in his other Kennedy books, Manchester loathes Lyndon Johnson, and in this work he more clearly links LBJ with Mordred - Arthur's (JFK's) great enemy and the villain of the Camelot (Kennedy) legend - than in his previous books. In Manchester's prose Lyndon Johnson is little more than a redneck boor, a country hick whose crude habits, such as deer hunting, "horrified" the urbane, elegant, and intellectual JFK. In Manchester's view Lyndon Johnson was the "anti-Kennedy" - this despite the view held by many modern (and far more objective) historians that it was LBJ, and not JFK, who was the critical force behind the great Civil Rights and anti-poverty legislation passed in the mid-sixties. This book repeats virtually every legend and myth about JFK as fact - the disastrous Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in 1961 wasn't really JFK's fault, but the CIA's, President Eisenhower's, etc. Kennedy's womanizing wasn't anything that his predecessors (and successors) haven't done, so what's the big deal? And, of course, if Kennedy had only lived then none of the major problems and headaches of the mid-to-late sixties would ever have happened. According to Manchester, JFK would "definitely" have pulled out of South Vietnam - hence no Vietnam War, no dead American troops, no antiwar riots on college campuses, etc. If Kennedy had only lived the terrible race riots of the sixties would never have occurred, because blacks somehow "trusted" Kennedy more than they did Johnson, and would therefore have listened to JFK's urgings not to riot in the streets. Young adults would never have created a generation gap ("don't trust anyone over thirty"), because JFK was a young, "hip" guy like they were, and so they wouldn't have created a counterculture or become hippies. Of course, Manchester offers virtually no evidence to back up these claims - he simply presents them as "facts" that are accepted by everyone. In Manchester's rosy view, Kennedy was virtually perfect, with almost no flaws or weaknesses (and those few that exist only "prove his humanity"). If you still believe in the Camelot legends of JFK's Presidency and still have a romantic view of the man and his era, then you'll LOVE this book, as it takes the JFK legend and runs wild with it. But, if you're looking for a more balanced and objective work about JFK, then this is probably one of the last books you'd want to read. "One Brief Shining Moment" is simply the most biased "pro-Kennedy" book I've ever read. If you do choose to read this book, then I would recommend that you also read several other, more balanced Kennedy books. Among the best are Richard Reeve's "President Kennedy: Profile of Power", Herbert Parmet's "Jack: The Struggles of John F. Kennedy", and Robert Dallek's "An Unfinished Life".

                                        Book Description

This is a mother's story of survival. It is no more and no less than any mother could have done under similar cirumstances. A child is born with such incredible medical problems and challenges, a whole community is brought to bear to help keep her alive and her family from crumbling under the terrible strain.

It speaks of strength, and the illusion of control."One Brief Shining Moment" is a testament to one small family, trying its best to stay together, body and soul, and surviving the worst. It is a heart breaking, gut wrenching story to read, but one that demonstrates the depth of love.

When one's alternatives are limited, you gotta go with what you got; and this is going with what you got, at its best.

A must read for any parent who has ever faced a medical challenge with a child, as it gives insights only another parent can appreciate.

This book is not meant to be a historical recollection of scholarly aptitude about the presidency and politics of the late Mr. Kennedy. In the first few sentences of the introduction, Mr. Manchester made that completely clear. His aim, I believe, was to offer an intimate view of the president from the perspective of an intimate friend. President Kennedy had been dead for 21 years before I was born and 41 years would pass after his assassination until I took great interest in his life and presidency this year. In reading this book, I fell in love with every aspect of him: his personality, family, politics, and overall warmth, and though Kennedy's persona is enigmatic in itself, I don't think that I would have admired him as strongly as I do without the masterful yet intimate writing of this book. It doesn't offer an objective or scholarly approach to Kennedy's life. It offers an intimate one. I laughed, cried, and fumed while reading this book, trapped in the illusion that I was actually there with the senator in his race for the presidency, during his presidency, and even in his personal life back in the 50s and 60s, even though the reality was that I was born 21 years after his assassination. I am not too strongly politically inclined; I recommend this book strongly to anyone who just wants to know who the late former president was as a man, son, father, husband, and president. It is a great book. And the fact that it is loaded with pictures is a plus as well.

But if you're looking for a more balanced and fair-minded work about JFK, then this is probably the LAST book you'll want to read. I've read many books about the Kennedys - some favorable and some critical - but this book is easily the least objective and balanced pro-Kennedy account that I've ever read. If you do choose to read this book, I would suggest you then read several other, more balanced Kennedy books. Richard Reeve's "President Kennedy: Profile of Power" is excellent, as is Herbert Parmet's "Jack: The Struggles of John F. Kennedy".
