Book Description
The Limited Liability Company (LLC) is one of the most exciting developments in modern business history - and one of the most eagerly awaited. Combining the tax advantages of a partnership with the personal debt protection of a corporation, LLCs are now encouraged in all states except Hawaii, Massachusetts and Vermont. Many believe this innovative structure may replace general and limited partnerships, joint ventures, and S corporations in time. Learn how to set up an LLC or how to convert an existing business. Be able to discuss specific features confidently with legal and accounting professionals. Although laws vary from state to state, LLCs typically offer a wide range of benefits over other business forms, including:
No corporate taxes
Personal assets are protected from creditors and legal judgments
Owners decide how to divide income and tax liabilities
Profit and loss allocations may be changed from year to year to fit the individual tax needs of owners
Ownership is virtually unrestricted
The book includes easy-to-understand explanations of legal and financial concepts concerning LLCs. The questions most frequently asked by entrepreneurs and small business owners are answered. Along with state-by-state details and sources of additional state information, you'll find samples of certificates of information and operating agreements.
Customer Reviews:
Information is readily available and Free, don't bother.......2002-11-01
This reference to LLC's covers less than what can be found on most state web sites. The forms are COPIES of downloadable forms from each state and are outdated. Most of the state fees are incorrect! LLC's are not difficult to file for. In most cases, there are only a couple requirements from each state and the forms can be completed in less than 30 minutes. What is hard about an LLC or any corporate structure is the Operating Agreement (like By Laws), which should be detailed and clearly spell out the rights, responsibilities and limitations placed on the members and managers of the organization. This book shows a couple very general examples but does not even list important areas to "think" about. The Operating Agreement is the most important document of an LLC; it is what creates the legal limiting of liability. The forms sent to the state are simply a formality and can be figured out by following the instructions on the forms themselves. More than 75% of this book lists information for each state and shows copies of forms. This is a waste. This is a no star book, but had to give atleast one.
Create an LLC in Your Own State Fast.......2000-06-15
This book is written by people who clearly know what they're talking about, and who aim to make the LLC simple to understand. They describe how easy it is to create one anywhere in the US and give you everything you need. The writing is simple, direct, and interesting--no legalese, no jargon. The book gives a clear picture of the advantages of LLCs over other business structures. Even though the copyright says 1995, the book has been updated through 1997 at least because it cites 1997 legislation. The authors walk you through the steps of creating the LLC, and provide simple forms of the five legal documents required--Articles of Organization, Operating Agreement, Listing of Managers, Listing of Members, and Listing of Capital Contributions. It lists state-by-state the address of the Secretary of State, the fees, and state LLC guidelines. Incredibly, the book includes the actual forms you need for the filing in each state. I picked up the book not knowing anything about LLCs and feel I came away with a clear picture of how to create one. I appreciate the feeling of empowerment. However, this book provides the simplest versions of the things necessary to create an LLC. And stops there. There are many REALLY valuable items you could include in your Articles of Organization that the authors could have hinted at without losing that simple feel. Also, the name 'Handbook' is misleading--you'll soon want another book that gives you the nuts and bolts of funding and operating an LLC. But what the Handbook does, it does well. Good book, great price.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful book for applying Law everyday........2003-10-09
This is a wonderful book because of the way it is organized from the definitions of law and how American government works in terms of business dealings and legal relationships with others. I'm impressed at the margin headings of each chapter and a thorough definitions of each law which is easy for the reader to read and understand. An additional pro of this book is the numerous case examples given within each chapter and towards the end. Each case is interesting and useful once you take a thorough look through it.
Some flaws that I found with this item is on the Study Guide, where some erroneous answers are found, that is to say, it does not comply with the answers given in the back of the book. Other than that, this book is great and should always be kept in a library for legal purposes. Excellent work.
Essentials of Contemporary Business Law w/CD.......2000-04-08
This book is very in depth and yet still finds ways to make the subject interesting. I was amazed at how much was included between this soft cover edition. I was also pleased that the CD was for both PC and Mac formats. The overall flow of the subject matter and presentation ranks this book as one of the best I have purchased. Please let the publisher know that this eternal student has a new faith in the publishing industry again.

Book Description
"Why can't a man be more like a woman?" seems to be the catchphrase of modern management gurus. They claim to be revaluing feminine "soft" skills as qualities necessary for corporate success. This book looks behind the rhetoric and investigates the gender relations of senior management in a post-equal opportunities world. The proportion of women managers has risen dramatically in the last twenty years, yet there are still very few women getting to the top. Based on a major study of five multinational corporations with model equality policies, this book takes a critical look at women's and men's experience in a changing corporate climate. Wajcman brings to bear feminist theories on equality and difference in employment, together with organizational analysis, in her assessment of whether women really do bring a distinct feminine style of management to tomorrow's organizations. The main focus is on the processes of masculine organizational culture that sexualize women and exclude them from senior management. But how comfortable are men with the masculinity of management? This book presents fascinating material on the private lives of managers and looks at the interconnections between home and work for men as well as women. The author reveals how relations between the sexes are negotiated in the corridors of power and at the kitchen sink.
Customer Reviews:
There's still a 'glass ceiling'.......2000-06-08
Why is it that, even in multi-nationals with exceptionally enlightened gender and family policies, so few women reach top management positions? This is a notably well researched and well analysed study of the phenomenon and its causes, which goes behind popular cliché-ridden explanations. The perspective taken is explicitly feminist, and explicitly political in that it focuses on power relationships.
Those interested in gender issues in management will find this book indispensable. It is 'academic' in presentation, with detailed references and careful linking to other findings in its field. However, unlike too many 'academic' books, it is well written and relatively easy to read.
Perhaps its main virtue is the breadth with which the subject is approached. It examines in depth not only the gender bias of the implicit labour contract - and management contract - within organisations but also the underlying assumptions about personal and family life that help to account for the fact that few women enter top management and few of those have children. The research method makes evident the wide gap between rhetoric and reality and also demonstrates the way in which both language and the very basis of business organisation (even modern 'delayered' organisation) exert a subtle bias against the entry of women to the top ranks of management.
Even those who do not have a specific interest in gender issues will find a great deal to reflect on about the nature of business and society and the relationship between them.
The book also provides valuable material for anyone who wants to get into real depth on the place of business in a society that truly seeks to meet its human and not merely its economic potential. What are the societal 'ground rules' within which that could be achieved and how might they be brought into existence?
The author does not, in general, seek to prescribe. The book is a work of description and analysis, although we are left with a tantalising last sentence. 'For women and men, opportunities for realizing alternative visions are overshadowed by the continued primacy of paid work as the source of status and meaning in contemporary culture.' That strikes a particular chord with me, having recently read a collection of the stories of people - women and men - who are striving as their main goal to balance the demands of career, family and community. The sheer invisibility of work that is not paid recurs as a leitmotif throughout those stories, together with the powerful demonstration that it is precisely this invisible work that is central to the continuance of a healthy community and society.

Book Description
Seeing, feeling, tasting, smelling and hearing - if you join Rafiq Shami and his sister Marie Fadel on a stroll through their native Damascus, you will discover this Queen of the Orient with all your senses. Rafiq Shami, award-winning writer and master storyteller, describes the colorful scenes of the old town and relays the stories of its inhabitants overheard in the coffee houses. Reading his prose one seems to be able to smell the cardamom and the coriander sold in the spice market and hear the cries of street traders. Inspired by his stories, one can follow his sister Marie Fadel’s recipes and recreate the tastes of the Orient.
Book Description
A Taste of Syria is a collection of treasured family recipes that were brought to this country by the authors' grandparents, immigrants from Aleppo, Syria. Two generations later, a desire to honor the culinary skills of their own parents, Helen Kassar Jerro and Alice Kassar Kayal, led to this cookbook. The Kassars are known for their culinary skills and commitment to preserving the integrity of Syrian cuisine. All these family recipes are reproductions of meals prepared similarly in Syria today. While some items (like hummus) are universal throughout the Middle East, the tastes of Aleppo are unique in their particular mixture of spices and textures. It is also a particularly healthful cuisine, with many vegetarian recipes reflecting the sophistication of that city. Syrian entrees are lamb-based (very lean cuts), and include rolled grape leaves with meat, and stuffed squash or eggplant cooked in a garlic, tomato, lemon, and mint sauce.
Complete with indices in English and Arabic, A Taste of Syria opens with an introduction to Syria and Aleppian cuisine, a glossary of terms, and a guide to Syrian food preparation. Helpful serving hints and a list of ingredient and utensil suppliers complement this cookbook, which will be an exciting addition to the collection of all Middle Eastern food lovers.
Customer Reviews:
Not good.......2005-08-12
This is one of the few books I have returned to Amazon. The recipes are astonishingly bad. I have a large collection (at least 40) Middle eastern cook books, we regularly cook Middle Eastern food, but this book, while obviously a sincere effort, does not do Middle Eastern food credit. Look elsewhere.
Fabulous Reading and Cooking.......2003-03-28
Finally a cook book that reads like a family album. Not only authentically Syrian American foods, but stories of the authors childhood memories and loves. I have tried many of the recipes and the results are spectacular. Easy to follow instruction, I feel sometimes like 'grandma' is in the kitchen teaching me. Thanks for this wonderful slice of your life, and for a book I will use for many years to come. Now I can enjoy my favorite Syrian foods at home without going to Paterson!!
Outstanding easy to use Middle Eastern cookbook.......2003-03-28
"A Taste of Syria" is a wonderful collection of Middle Eastern recipes and a special treasure for those of us who are third and fourth generation descendants of Middle Eastern families. I grew up in Brooklyn and remember fondly the wonderful Syrian cooking of my paternal grandmother and the many wonderful meals eaten at her home. As a teenager and young adult I tried to cook my favorites among these meals but my grandmother's instructions were basically - "a little bit of this or that; you need to see how it tastes or feels." After several unsuccessful efforts, I gave up trying to cook most of these meals and truly missed these wonderful, healthy foods of my childhood. This book has given me back those wonderful recipes and memories. The recipes are clear and provide step by step instructions with many pictures and lots of useful information. The names in Arabic and English and the information on where to get the ingredients are particularly useful. I have tried several of the recipes and they are terrific and taste just the way my Grandmother made them. I have also shared this book with many of my relatives and non-Middle Eastern friends and family who also enjoy this food and are excited that they now can try these recipes. The authors have done a truly outstanding job and I thank them for keeping alive a very special part of our heritage and capturing the essence and quality of Middle Eastern cooking for all.
Sensational Syrian Cuisine.......2003-03-10
"A Taste of Syria" is must reading for any one who enjoys terrific Middle East cuisine. Not only is it the first truly authentic, homespun Syrian cook book published in decades, this outstanding book impressively captures the texture and the life of the Syrian American community as it pertains to its culinary traditions. The authors present delicious Syrian specialities, capitalizing especially on the internationally acclaimed cuisine of Aleppo. And there are two helpful indexes -- dishes are listed by both their Arabic names and their English names. This yummy cook book has it all--how to conveniently prepare tasty lamb, seasoned vegetables, yogurt, as well as favorite staples like Hummus, Baba Ghanouj and Tabouli. What I especially like about this book, which spans two cultures, are the easy-to-follow cooking instructions. This innovative cook book is such a delight I'm seriously considering changing professions and becoming a chef!

Weismann is smart and has read everything........2007-05-10
Who would have guessed that an Israeli professor at Haifa University would be the world's authority on Islamic movements in Syria? He is. He has read everything and writes well, bringing alive the human and intellectual drama of Islamic debate in Syria. When Syrians debated how they would face the modern world and the western on-slot at the time of encroaching European power, most did it in Islamic terms. This is the book to read if you are interested in understanding the roots of modern Islamist movements in Syria. Weismann has written many important articles on modern Syrian Islamists, who have sought to unify Sufism and Salafism in order to push aside the Baathist regime. This is a very pricey book, but it is worth every cent.

Customer Reviews:
A great 3-quote book!.......2007-07-09
This is a great 3-quote book (i.e., you will have quoted it three times in conversation within the first 24 hours of starting to read it). What makes a great 3-quote book? A good story with interesting characters, a great story teller, and meaningful insight. If you are a student, learn from the well researched wisdom of the Capital Group. If you are a manager, recognize how to motivate, promote, and build great teams for greater returns. If you are an investor, take notes.
Capital, a must read.......2005-05-17
If you are an investor and haven't learned of the advantages of the American Funds Family of Mutual Funds and its parent, Capital Reasearch and Management Company, this is a must read. Capital Research and Mngmt is a quiet company, they do not advertise, they do not sit for interviews or do press releases. They only manage money, period. As a result, they do it better than anybody. This book is the only place you will get in-depth information about the company short of visiting a broker who is equally enlightened. Discovering an equally enlightened broker, may I say, is rare to find in its own right. Rich people know about this company, but finding a rich person who will talk is equally difficult. Just read it, you'll see.
Tedious at times, but a worthwhile read.......2004-06-16
I read this book on the advice of my investment advisor. The first half was tedious but the second half was packed with valuable information about a great company. This is stuff that I can use in my own business, and I don't regret the time that it took to wade through the early chapters.
Great Subject...Lousy Book!.......2004-05-05
What a great story! Capital Group has one of the most amazing long-term performances and is one of the most unique organizations in the industry! But this book just stinks. I can barely believe the Charlie Ellis wrote this. It's completely disjointed. There's no structure at all. It's like they just published his notes. He skips across generations within a single paragraph. He contradicts himself. About 150 of the 300 pages is fluff and adds nothing to the story. About 1/3 of EVERY page is footnotes that add nothing. He references chapters within the same chapter. It's just terrible. It's obvious the publisher was just in a hurry to get the book out to make a buck off the mutual fund scandal before the hype died off. How ironic that Capital Group takes a long term approach, launching new funds against the tide, while the people at Wiley (by launching this book before it was ready) have shown themselves to be a bunch of short-sighted money grubbers.
For students & admirers only!.......2004-04-15
I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book - it would be the first time that anything comprehensive has been written on the organization. I tried to navigate my way through all of the footnotes and irrelevancies but without much success. There seems to be no real structure to the book. Sure; the overriding message is that the organization is vastly successful, and the author praises Capital throughout. Frankly I'm surprised that the editors didn't intervene and reformat the entire thing from start to finish. A disappointing read - I can only liken it to a textbook without a curriculum, and oh-so disjointed. Oh and BTW - I work here too!

Dividends.......2007-05-15
Dividend paying stocks are generally large, well established companies that can't find anything better to do with their profits than pay them back to the shareholders.

This is not a list of growth stocks.
100 best... from 3 years ago........2006-07-02
This is probabaly just a pubishing problem, but most of the research in this book (dated 2005) goes back to 2003 and 2004. All well and good, theory wise, but for a book that claims current stock picks...
Amazon.com
The completely revised and updated fifth edition of The 100 Best Stocks to Own in America offers financial analyst Gene Walden's choices for the stocks best poised for long-term growth. It is especially appropriate for small- and first-time investors. Each entry--including 24 new to this edition--is rated on 5-year earnings-per-share growth, 10-year stock growth, 3-year dividend yield, 5-year dividend growth, consistency of year-to-year earnings gains over a 10-year period, and shareholder perks. Brief profiles of each company include a fiscal snapshot and contact information.
Book Description
Savvy investors realize that blue chip investments are companies that are better capitalized and positioned to succeed in the changing marketplace where "bricks and clicks" alike are required. Among the best of the best, companies chosen by Walden for the previous edition have led the market indicators: the average return of his top five picks was 30.4% compared to -7.2% for the Dow Jones Industrial Average over the same one-year period.
The 100 Best Stocks to Own in America goes far beyond impressive figures for one year. Since its first edition in 1989, Walden's guide to stocks poised for superior long-term growth has not let investors down. In fact, hundreds of thousands of investors have used this information to create powerful portfolios. Many buy each edition of the book to see how the lists of companies have changed over time. What hasn't changed are the rigorous criteria for inclusion: only the strongest companies make the grade. Companies are selected on the basis of: earnings growth, stock growth, dividend growth, dividend yield, consistency, shareholder perks.
Walden shares inside stories and insights about investing along with contact information, details about the company, and explanation of the results. Results are illustrated for each company in a table of points, at-a-glance results, and a bar chart of stock growth. Listings by industry and state make this book an easy-to-use reference.

Fast and easy read.......1999-12-17
This book is an easy and informative read for selecting blue chip stocks. I still have the first edition and it is interesting to see how many stocks are gone from the original 100. My only problem with his book is the rating system. I do not believe that shareholder perks should have the same weight as stock growth and earnings growth.
It is a good book for the starting investor.......1998-12-21
I used the book in selecting my initial portfolio.......the book provides a concise and consistent summary of the best performing stocks over the last 5 years or so.

Now in its 5th Edition this book is fabulous! It is a must read for anyone interested in building a solid portfolio of quality blue chip stocks.

Walden also includes a no-nonsense overview of investing in mutual funds and insights from 20 of the nation's top portfolio managers. The author includes rankings divided into types of funds as well as an alphabetic listing.

Seems obvious that Walden used Investors FastTrack.......2004-03-13
The book is kinda of a dump of data and conclusions that the FastTrack people originated years ago. Skip the book and go to the source.
How can the author include so many load funds?.......1999-08-28
I can't understand how a book that claims to offer/judge the best mutual funds in America can include any non-speciality load funds in the group. The author lists many equity funds with large loads and returns that are less than many no load funds he didn't list. Given the fact that there are so many no load funds with outstanding performance it just does not make any sense to include load funds in the book.
maybe good, but..........1999-06-12
This book's title should really read "the 100 best (mostly loaded) mutual funds to own in america". I would not recommend it if you are building your portfolio with no-load mutual funds. Kirk Kazanjian's book would be a good alternative.
Very informitive.......1998-08-04
As a new investor this book was extremely helpful for me. This book is easy to follow and gives the information needed to compare funds. 2 of the 3 funds I invested in were recommended by this book.
