When I was a college student, I often used old tests as a study aid to prepare for examinations. This also held true when I was a law student. Now that I am teaching paralegal studies, I am the person who has to come up with the questions. I had been used to long essay questions in law school, but those proved to be inappropriate for paralegal students. Paralegal students tend to favor true false and multiple choice questions, which are really difficult to write.
There is a certain logic in how examinations are prepared by instructors and professors, and Seigel's Wills and Trusts provides some insight into how they are prepared. I was able to have some guidance in preparing exams through the use of this book. For the student, this book is good in that it covers the basic concepts. I am not saying that your instructor will use this book to prepare his exams, but through the study of this book you should be able to have sufficient an understanding of the topic material and how it is presented in an examination to prepare well for the exams given at the end of a course.

The cards are sturdy and attractive, and thankfully coated so that they wipe off fairly easily. The backs are graced with attractive photographs, usually of the card's dish. Thanks to the necessarily brief format, you know you're getting relatively simple recipes that don't require a ton of page-flipping. Ingredients and instructions are laid out quite well, and are easy to make out in a hurry.
Surprisingly, a four-panel foldout card includes a listing of all recipes with numbers (cards are numbered one through 50) as well as some basic tips and recipes for such things as melting chocolate and making chocolate frosting. We made two different kinds of chocolate mousse from the deck--a whipped cream-based mousse cake and an egg white-based mousse--and both were absolutely divine. The chocolate jelly (a chocolate jello-like dessert) didn't fare quite as well; it separated into two layers with different textures, and although it tasted quite good, not everyone at dinner was fond of the texture.
To a certain extent the utility of this deck is dependent on your personality and style; if you're highly organized, I think you'll find it much more usable than I did and can probably consider the rating to be 5 out of 5. If, like me, you have ADD-induced brain scatter, constantly having to find the small cards while you cook might drive you a tad nuts! Keep this in mind when deciding whether this item is right for you.

The cards measure approximately 5.5 x 3.75 inches and come in an attractive, sturdy box. The top comes off easily, providing easy access to the deck, and the box can stand upright.
The full-color photos make my mouth water! My only complaint with this deck is that a few of the pictures repeat. However, considering the tempting recipes in The Chocolate Deck, this is a minor criticism!
If you love chocolate or know someone who does, these cards would make a wonderful alternative to a bulky cookbook!

I purchased this book from the little special exhibit store at the Atlanta Fernbank Museum special exhibit on choloate. I believe that many of the photographs come directly from the exhibit. This is a sensual book with beautiful illustrations. It gives the history of chocolate and has details of manufacturers and particular brands.
What particularly interested me was the discussion of the way that chocolate has gradually been discovered and planted around the world. The largest export was first Central America, now it is Africa.

NOT a cookbook, this volume is instead a very personal exploration of the hidden and historical roots of "chocolate" and the people who grow it, prepare it, and study its ancestry. Get your truffle recipes elsewhere, but get insights and lots of obscure, useful information here.

Nessuna delle persone a cui l'ho chiesto mi ha saputo dire che forma abbia il cioccolato prima di diventare una tavoletta. La maggior parte si stupisce nel venire a sapere che il chicco di cacao acquista il suo aroma caratteristico dopo una processo di fermentazione e tostatura oppure nell'apprendere che il cioccolato - quello fondente - è come il vino: ce ne sono varietà diverse e il gusto dipende, oltre che dalla lavorazione, dal territorio in cui viene coltivata la pianta.
Paul Richardson racconta tutte queste cose proponendo un viaggio che parte dal Messico, passa per il Venezuela e tocca vecchio e nuovo continente, dove negli ultimi tre secoli si sono affinate le tecniche di produzione e il cioccolato è diventato un prodotto di massa. L'autore parla soprattutto di questo: delle tante barrette e praline industriali che popolano i banchi dei negozi anglosassoni.
Il capitolo dedicato all'Italia non prende quasi in considerazione i grandi produttori di qualità e si sofferma sui Ferrero Rocher, sulla Nutella e sul sanguinaccio. Confesso che questa selezione mi lascia piuttosto perplesso e sinceramente non mi ritrovo molto in un'affermazione come: "l'amore degli italiani per il cioccolato è eguagliato solo dalla loro passione feticistica per noci e nocciole".
Il sanguinaccio lo conosco perché ne ero golosissimo da piccolo: me lo preparava la tata di mio padre con il sangue del maiale allevato in casa. Richardson ne descrive la versione di un paesino abruzzese, che differisce un po' da quella salernitana che mi è familiare. Chissà cosa scriverebbe della crostata di sanguinaccio fatta con la crema legata con della mollica di pane per renderla pastosa e spalmabile. Un'assoluta delizia che fa arricciare il naso di tutti quelli che hanno il coraggio di provarla.

The Glasgow Herald says: 'A writer who is prepared to sell his soul for one Lindt Milk Chocolate Animal'
What I found extraordinary about this comprehensive book that covers every aspect of the history, cultivation, production, marketing and the social and political issues surrounding chocolate is that, despite mentioning issues concerning fair trade, the author never mentions the Fairtrade Foundation, Divine chocolate or Green & Black's. It's simply not possible that he was unaware of the significance of these brands and the importance of organic cultivation to saving cacao from the ravages of disease and the importance of fair trade to saving cacao growers from the ravages of an unfair trading system, yet he glosses over these issues completely. I'm sure that Lindt will send him some chocolate animals, but this omission seriously reduces the value of an otherwise excellent book.
As the founder of Green & Black's chocolate I obviously have an axe to grind, but these issues are of vital importance and it was dismaying to see them sidestepped in a book that aims to be definitive

The key to teaching business ethics successfully, says Sims, is to start with clear goals and a sensible expectation of outcomes, and with a true knowledge and appreciation of how people actually learn. He highlights the importance of creating a classroom climate that encourages open dialogue, good moral conversation, and conversational learning. And throughout he emphasizes that learning styles and experiential learning theory are cornerstones of teaching business ethics, thus taking an approach unlike any in the literature. An important guide for those who are new to teaching this essential subject, Sims' book will also be helpful for more experienced teachers who are wondering why their own methods do not always work, or do not work as well as they believe they should. Sims identifies important processes that must be managed if business ethics is to be taught and learned successfully--processes such as creating stakeholder commitment to the goals, purposes, and outcomes of the teaching effort, and curriculum design and planning that are attuned to individual differences in learning styles, motivation, and values. Also included in Sims' processes are the development of individual school outcomes, and expectations, and the assessment procedures that can measure them. He discusses the importance of incorporating debriefing into an experiential learning exercise or discussion, and goes on to give an in-depth discussion of the pedagogical approaches that allow teachers to teach the practical and theoretical components of the subject simultaneously. Well illustrated with examples, such as an interdisciplinary approach to teaching and a way to institutionalize outcomes assessment by means of total quality management, Sims' book returns constantly to his major theme: that to teach business ethics effectively the teacher must first create a climate of trust and sharing within and between students, and between students and teacher, and that the teacher must have a concrete way to measure the impact of the teaching effort's results.

Few would dispute that Igor Stravinsky was the greatest composer of the twentieth century. Conductor and writer Robert Craft was his closest colleague and friend, and for over twenty-one years he lived with the Stravinskys in their Hollywood home. In the early 1950s he accompanied the composer on his concert tours, and from the mid-1950s to Stravinsky's death in 1971 he co-conducted his concerts. Together Stravinsky and Craft published five acclaimed collections known as the Conversations series, which sprung from informal talks between the two men.
In this newly edited and re-structured one-volume version, Craft brings Stravinsky's reflections on his childhood, his family life, professional associates, and personal relationships into sharper focus and places the major compositions in their cultural milieux. This is a most interesting set of conversations between Craft and Stravinsky. In many ways it is more personal than the earlier books by Stravinsky and quite frank in his assessments of the artists he knew and current trends in music and art. I cannot say that I agree with all of the master's judgments, but he is Stravinsky and I am not. He is always interesting and amazingly well read in his own art and in others.
His anecdotes from events in his career are always interesting and usually enlightening. The photographs reproduced here are especially interesting because of the people Stravinsky is with and what they say about the time and places when the were taken.
The book first takes us into his childhood, again, but this time in a most personal way. He then recounts various people he knew and provides us his portrait of them and often includes letters. He then gets directly into questions about music. For music lovers this is the most vital portion of the book. The last section talks about Nightingale, Persephone, and The Rake's Progress. Stravinsky also includes the outline he and Auden developed during their first ten days together working on the opera. Fascinating stuff.
A must read for all who love Stravinsky's music and for any general music reader who wants to know about one of the great musical figures of the twentieth century. That it can be had so inexpensively is a real plus!

The book provides an incredible value for those interested in artistic developments in Paris, under Diagilev's "Ballets Russes" leadership. I was impressed by the broadness of Stravinsky's thinking, by his incredible intellect and by his constant quest to explore the new - the ultimate attribute of creativity. The book is full of interesting memories on many famous people.
