Trivial content at an outrageous price.......2002-02-12

This book is a first for me - it's the first book to which I have ever given a one star rating. Believe me, if I could have given it no stars I would have done so.

Judy Long's book is, in every sense of the word, a slight work. It is only a modest xi + 114pp including its index and has generous whitespace and includes plenty of screenshots. Neither the editorial reviews on Amazon nor the book's back cover indicate that the book is aimed at paralegals - but I assume that such is its target market. It covers Westlaw legal research, KeyCite and Westlaw via WestMate - all at a pretty basic level.

In terms of basic accuracy and general cover I have no problem with this book. However, I do vigorously question the need for its existence. There is nothing in this book that is not covered as clearly and more comprehensively in West's own publications: Winning Research Skills (170pp), Using WestMate (29pp) and Using Westlaw.com (41pp). However, the one overwhelming advantage the West publications enjoy is that they are FREE to those who are registered as Westlaw users. On the other hand, gentle reader, Ms Long demands $38.95 for the privilege of you reading her inferior product.

I understand that West's publications are only available to Westlaw users - however, Ms Long's book assumes that you are a user. Indeed any course, whether for paralegals or law students, using this book would need Westlaw access and therefore could provide the West guides I have mentioned.

There are some books out there that really do add value to West's own guides to its products - but this book is not one of those. Perhaps the only people who might have need for a book of this kind would be non-legal casual Westlaw users, e.g. politics or history students. However, even they would be disappointed as their interface with the system would probably be through WestDoc - and this is not dealt with in the book.

Don't Bother.......2005-07-25

I've never bothered to review a book that i didn't like, but I had to keep others from making the same mistake i did.

The fact that this book is so old should have tipped me off. The information is way out of date. Even if it was up to date, it's way too basic even for an unsophisticated searcher like me.

I expected it to be a step by step on how to research and use sites, but it is just lacking.

There are better books on Amazon for doing legal research on theinternet.

This is a great book that shows you how to make fabulous candies at home easily.The author gives a wealth of information about chocolate and other ingredients, minimal equipment needed, and great recipes. My favorites are Caramel Chocolate Truffles, Orange-Hazelnut-Chocolate Clusters, Chocolate Nut Bark, and Mocha-Spice Fudge. Everyone on my list will be receiving homemade candy this holiday season.I enjoyed this book [...].My personal favorites are the truffles, especially the Green Tea Truffles

Carole Bloom says that this book is "all about pleasure" on page 1. This 200-page book includes recipes and techniques for making a wide variety of candy and chocolates right in your own home.

The book is organized topically into chapters: Introduction, Ingredients, Equipment and Tools, Techniques, Truffles, More Chocolate Candies, Caramel Candies, Nut Brittles and Marzipan, Fudge Nougat and Divinity, Fruit Candies and an Appendix of Sugar Stages/Temperatures/Weights and Measurement Equivalents.

Using the chapters on techniques and ingredients, even the beginner will be able to create luscious truffles at home. While there are only 11 photographs in the book, the equipment chapter has several drawings that will enable you to locate the right tool.

Each recipe includes a brief introduction, an expected yield, a list of ingredients, paragraph-style instructions on how to prepare the recipe, and variations. Recipes include Tropical Clusters, Swiss Chocolate Truffles, and Florentines.

From the basic to the exotic, you are sure to find the candy recipe you need in this little book.

If you like truffles..........2000-02-22

This book has excellent, easy to follow recipes. I made 5 batches of different truffles for Valentine's Day gifts, and they were very well received. If you have not worked with chocolate before, I recommend also purchasing 'The Art of Chocolate' by Elaine Gonzalez. The techniques of chocolate handling are explained in detail. When these techniques are combined with Ms. Bloom's recipes, it was a fun and easy endeavor.

Excellent resource for anyone working in performing arts.......1998-02-05

Written in a breezy, easy-to-understand style, this book is a must for anyone--actor or otherwise--who works in the performing arts field. The author understands the unique nature of their jobs and how it relates to taxes, deductions, etc. It will save you money in the long run. The only problem I have is that it only comes out every two years.

The author argues that state-sponsored social security will not deliver promised retirement incomes for the baby-boom generation; European monetary union and the imperatives of global finance has made such promises untenable thereby undercutting nation-state social solidarity. Globalization has set many challenges for European countries, not least of which is providing pension security for their citizens. At the same time, global finance has opened-up options for corporations and individuals seeking alternatives to the past; but exercising those opportunities will come at a high cost for European notions of social justice. there's no there, there!.......2002-07-23

I was excited to read an investigation into the ethical dilemnas surrounding changing our environment through building, but instead got a dime store review of philosophical positions and how one might make a decision using those positions. That coupled with non-committal statements about buildings such as the Guggenheim in New York - how can one reconcile their admiration for the building with the knowledge that it doesn't function as well as it could- left me wondering if the whole point was that ethics is a personal choice based on experience, personal preference, beliefs and values. While, that may be true and is surely fine conversation over a drink at the local pub, it's kind of weak for [$$$]and 200+ pages.

I found myself pondering my positions on the case studies presented and wondering if Spector's arguments might sway me, but there were never any arguments, just possible positions, permutations and effects. Spector quotes from "Utilitarianism and Beyond"

"It can be argued that rational choice base on an incomplete ordering requires only that a not inferior alternative be picked. This would have required Buridan's...to pick either haystack, but not neither, which was clearly an inferior alternative."

By choosing to not take any position, the author falls into his own "inferior alternative". After all, we all make value judgements and decisions each day that form the basis of our own personal ethics, but none of us need to buy a book to tell us that.

Questions, that every architect should deal with.......2001-10-02

A very serious aproach to the core of the most basic questions about the architectural profession. A book that openes many questions that architects should ask themselves more than we do today if we want to gain back credibility which our profession lost somewhere in the recent past. Part of the profit that I am making from this story is being donated to the "Children's Home Society" who house and feed battered and foster children taken from domestic abuse situations.

I am hoping with all of my heart that my story will at least be able to be inspirational to someone else and also perhaps raise some money for my own personal cause of abuse awareness and to help those trying to help others.

Crazy, Crazy, Crazy.......2001-06-30

In her book, Living Crazy Like Fly, author Caryn Suarez invites her readers to travel with her on a journey from the depths of depression to the euphoria of joy, and back again. Author Suarez's has done an able job as she writes of a young woman's daily trek from hell to heaven, from home to school.

It takes courage for one to write of something so personal, so tragic. And yet Ms. Suarez has provided us an opportunity to explore, with her, the dark corners of that young woman's life and to see the skeletons in the closets of the place she called home for so many painful years.

To you readers:I hope you plan on giving Ms. Suarez a chance to share with you the heart felt story of one woman's tragedy and triumph, of her heartbreak and joy, by buying a copy of this remarkable book.

Kindred Spirit.......2001-03-29

After reading the book I realized that I was not alone. I think there are many others out there from the '70's who were in the same boat and did not have anyone to talk to about the abuse they were suffering at home. Like the author, we went to school to escape home life. I think it is a great book and that everyone should read this true to life story of survival. It lets you know there is still a chance for all of us to land on our feet.

The best of times, the worst of times growing up in the 70's.......2001-02-19

Caryn has wrote a great but sometimes sad, sometimes happy book about growing up in the 70's. Though I am a personal friend of the author, I believe the reader will throughly enjoy this book and be able to relate to it from their own growing pains. We had lots of fun in that era and hope you will join the adventure. Just watch out for the holes in the ground :-)

Captivating.......2001-01-06

I found Caryn Suarez' story captivating, a good read, and something I couldn't put down once I started reading. How easily we picture our friends and neighbors as 'typical,' and yet does anyone ever know what really goes on behind closed doors ? A book I recommend to anyone who wants to read about the hidden truths in small town USA.

Just Butting In.......2000-12-08

Imagine going home from school, walking in your door and fearing for your life. Now, do that everday for about 15 years. Picture yourself walking into a room and looking down the barrel of a large caliber gun held by your father. The man who is supposed to protect his family and children, instead he is beating them until they can hardly move. This happened in my small town. It was in her household that this story takes place. Her home was her private hell. It was a place that was perfect; an "all American household" on the outside, but to the people who lived in the house it was the worst place on earth. However, her life was not totally miserable. The book tells of her high school activities, her friends and "ze Country Club". This was a club that she and her friends formed and it became a club much loved by most of the students. It was special because the leaders did not limit entrance by social status, money or age: they let you be a part of their lives if you were a good person and fun to be with. In my honest opinion, this book was the most depressing, happy, funny, disturbing and most heartfelt book that I have ever read. "Living Crazy Like Fly" is a book that EVERYBODY should read. It gives you strength to endure bad things; and it makes good things much better. It brings reality to life and makes the human heart a little bit kinder.
