    Book Description

A great deal of economics is about law - the functioning of markets, property rights and their enforcement, financial obligations, and so forth - yet these legal aspects are almost never addressed in the academic study of economics. Conversely, the study and practice of law entails a significant understanding of economics, yet the drafting and administration of laws often ignore economic principle.

The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics and the Law is uniquely placed by the quality, breadth and depth of its coverage to address this need for building bridges. Drawn from the ranks of academics, professional lawyers, and economists in eight countries, the 340 contributors include world experts in their fields. Among them are Nobel laureates in economics and eminent legal scholars.

First published in 1998 and now available in paperback for the first time, The New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics and the Law has established itself as a classic reference work in this important field.

      Book Description

Affirmative action is among the most controversial and divisive issues facing Americans today and its effectiveness and legitimacy are under constant scrutiny. Using a "pro and con" approach to this topic, the authors assess the merits and failures of affirmative action while avoiding the contentiousness that characterizes much of the discourse over racial preferences. "Affirmative Action" provides reasoned and balanced discussion and distinguishes between the theory and practice of affirmative action. The authors analyze the legal origins of affirmative action, discuss its implications on the future of American race relations, and suggest alternative strategies for sustaining an environment of supportive diversity.

            Book Description

For centuries before the arrival of European settlers, the Chesapeake Bay's natural bounty and pristine beauty were self-sustaining. Today, after three centuries of human use and abuse, almost everyone agrees that the Bay is fragile and its future uncertain. As scientists work to understand the environmental threats and policy makers respond with new regulations, ordinary people are increasingly doing their part to ensure a healthier future for the Chesapeake. Saving the Bay gathers dozens of these stories and brings them forward as examples of how broadly the coalition to protect the Bay has grown and succeeded.

Through engaging photographs by Richard A.K. Dorbin and moving first-person accounts compiled by Ann E. Dorbin, this book celebrates a new chapter in the history of the Bay, one in which people in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Washington, D.C., Delaware, West Virginia, and New York work hand in hand to shape the future of a beloved resource. From Americorps volunteer Julie Benintendi's work with shoreline restoration to Mike Ogburn's efforts to build a non-polluting electric car, from the mountainous outer reaches of the watershed to the mouth of the Bay, the people working for the Chesapeake are as diverse and dynamic as the resource itself. Here are teachers, engineers, writers, farmers, parents, and naturalists working with grit and imagination. Saving the Bay demonstrates how these unprecedented efforts throughout the Chesapeake Bay region are making a real difference toward creating a better future.

"By bringing these stories to the forefront, we hope to educate readers, show that individual actions are critical, and accentuate positive rather than negative human impacts on the environment. Just as the wonder of the Bay is not reserved for experts or old-timers, neither is the work that lies ahead. Therein lies the premise of this project--that behind the reports and controversy over the human-induced decline of the Bay's health and the path of its future, are many people doing their part, in different and necessary ways, for the future of the watershed." -- from Saving the Bay

The book addresses most of the common tax situations expats encounter, using numerous examples to explain. 2 out of 5 stars Check the IRS' website first.......2003-12-14

I have been living abroad for several years, and purchased this book when my tax situation became more complicated (i.e. when my income passed the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion). Although the information in the book is helpful, I found that the large majority of what I needed was available on the IRS' website, which is very user-friendly, contains a wealth of valuable information, and most importantly is free.

In particular, IRS Publication 54 "Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad" seemed to answer all of my questions, and there are hundreds of other publications available from the IRS that are very helpful, are written in plain English and contain many useful examples. Of course, if your tax situation is extremely complex, you may need more help, but in that case, you probably will need to seek recourse to a sophisticated tax advisor as opposed to a book.

5 out of 5 stars The writing and organization is excellent.......2000-11-02

I am an expat, and I found answers to many of my questions in this work book. I am not knowledgable enough in tax law to pass judgement on the quality of the information presented here. Expat tax law is complicated and intricate, involving many special cases which may not apply to you. The work book overcomes this through careful organization of chapters and topics. It is possible to locate topics of interest without having wade through large amounts of unrelated material. I gave this work book the fifth star for it's spiral binding, which makes it much easier to work with.

4 out of 5 stars Title? What Title?.......2000-03-18

This book is an extremely helpful resource for expat tax issues. This subject is very difficult for an individual without a big company taking care of all the details. If I had found this book earlier, it would have saved me dozens of hours scouring the internet for relavent information. Note that this isn't a book to help you figure out the best way to wangle yourself into tax-freedom. You should get this book well before moving, use it to help you plan and then visit a professional - but at least you won't be paying a professional to cover the groundwork.

4 out of 5 stars Great Introductory Book.......2007-03-31

This was a good, quick read. As a person interested in investing in my future with little knowledge to go on, it introduced me to terms and ideas I hadn't previously known. He throws out some common sense about the market. I definitely recommend the book as a good primer to getting started.

I'm a Certified Financial Planner(tm) practitioner who is always looking for good financial books to recommend to friends and people who come to my educational seminars. This one really hits the mark beautifully and says exactly what almost all successful financial advisors tell their clients. The secret to smart investing is investing in line with your risk tolerance, doing good asset allocation across all investment categories, choosing good mutual funds, then monitoring and adjusting the portfolio once a year.

Get rich schemes don't work and they make you crazy in the bargain. Low stress investing is the way to go -- forget market timing, picking hot stocks and following the "hot" advice from all the financial pornography on TV. Follow Millard's advice and you can have a worry-free portfolio.

A nice bonus with this book is the list of other good financial books in Appendix 2. I have read many of the ones he recommends and they are some of the best ones out there.

Get this book. You'll be glad you did and your stress level will improve.

Canada is generally thought of as a high-tax country, and for Canadians the taxes are high. But tax haven expert Adam Starchild walks the reader through a step-by-step program under which a foreign immigrant can live in Canada tax-free while becoming a Canadian citizen -- then use that citizenship to live tax-free in any of dozens of other countries. As these incentives were deliberately legislated to encourage wealthy immigrants to move to Canada, they are unlikely to be removed in the near future.

                    Book Description

The great improvisational American jazz musicians of the mid-20th century inspired a generation of photographers to develop a looser, moodier style of visual expression. That evocative approach is on striking display in The Jazz Image. Covering six decades of performers —from Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington to John Coltrane and Miles Davis—this unique collection is as much a comprehensive catalogue of jazz greats as it is a salute to the photographers who captured them.

Lee Tanner, a leading authority on jazz photography, has selected works—by such noted jazz photographers as Herman Leonard, Bob Willoughby, Milt Hinton, and Bill Claxton—that are iconic, candid, explosive, and intimate. They provide a simultaneous look at jazz, photography, and America from 1935 into the 1990s.

If you grew up listening to jazz from the 30's through the 60's you'll really enjoy the pictures in this book. They evoke a feeling and, in most cases, present the players as "bigger than life"...just as they were to us then and now.

                    Book Description

In Jazz: Photographs of the Masters, internationally acclaimed photographer Jacques Lowe captures the character and spirit of 200 of the greatest jazz musicians who define the state of the art today. Of all music, jazz best represents the diversity and dynamism of twentieth-century America, and this sumptuous volume of duotone portraits pays homage to the virtuosos who have created this extraordinarily rich music.

Here are contemplative photographs of such jazz greats as Oscar Peterson, Gerry Mulligan, and McCoy Tyner, and intimate portraits that reveal the warmth and humor of such artists as Ron Carter, Milt Jackson, and Joe Henderson. Great women musicians like Betty Carter and Shirley Horn are also pictured, as are today's most popular artists including Dave Brubeck, Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Peggy Lee, and Artie Shaw.

The text, by jazz connoisseur Cliff Preiss, traces the development of jazz from the turn of the century, illuminating those pictured through personal histories and anecdotes. Living legends like Sonny Rollins and Max Roach are featured, as well as innovators like Cecil Taylor and Wayne Shorter, whose genius sparked phases of jazz evolution. The text also discusses those virtuosos who have reached out and integrated other popular musical forms into jazz, and spotlights today's emerging artists.

When being able to place a face and look to an artist, the enjoyment of music is enhanced. I've only just begun my lifelong pursuit of jazz appreciation and this book really is a great tool for this. It creates a mental visualization of the artist for us. This is the only way to actually see most of the great artists that have left us, the only way to actually see into the world they lived and played in. So much of the music that they've left us was inspired by their surroundings and their daily interactions. Lowe has done an excellent job in creating this visual walk through the history of such a great artform. This is highly recommended to all those who appreciate jazz for the great artform it is.

Delightful in its simplicity but evocative in the imagery, this book is a treasure. It reminds me of the wonders of my youth growing up on the prairies. The scenes would have been just a few miles from my own family home place.

This book is simply a favorite of our family. We really enjoy reading about the hard prairie life and school yard fun that William Kurelek portrays on each page. The paintings wonderfully illustrate the daily life on prairie and each are complimented with a small story. This is one of those books that you can read to your children over and over again without getting bored. I just ordered a Prairie Boy's Summer, which I am sure will be just as delightful.

This book gives an interesting overview of life in the northern regions of America (Canada) during the depression era. Included are favorite pastimes and games that the children played. This book was written with the youngest generation in mind but it will be enjoyed by the older generation for the memories it stirs. I'm of a middle generation and I enjoyed it because it gave me a closer look at my parents childhood.

5 out of 5 stars Not the full collection of her writtings, but great!.......2007-10-10

My mother-in-Law loved the books when she was growing up and I thought the television show was okay. So when my daughter seven, that's what grandma wanted and I didn't object. We started with the scholastic b+w set and it didn't draw my daughter in as much as this does. The pictures really pop out more in color and even though my daughter's a fairly good reader, the pictures make the difference for her. It might help that the stories are all of her as a child rather than also an adult-type person as in the complete set. The content is just fine, although a little scary at times, and I hope she's learning to notice how good things are now. (I can't imagine living in a sod house!)

                                  5 out of 5 stars Librabary staple.......2007-02-13

What can I say? Everyone knows how wonderful these books are and if you don't, you will just have to read them for yourself. I am reading them to my 2 and 5 year old daughters. Surprisingly, they both listen well and beg me to read more (although my 5 year old will sit and listen while the younger loses interest after awhile, but hey, she's only 2) I am having as much fun reading them for myself a I am sharing them with my girls. Every morning after breakfast, we curl up on the couch or by the fireplace and read. And now my girls love to dress up and play Mary and Laura Ingalls and I think thats just wonderful. I don't have any boys but I imagine little boys would enjoy them as well (especially Farm Boy) And if you don't have kids, but just like to read, get them for yourself.

                                  5 out of 5 stars Awesome Family Read-A-Loud set.......2007-01-19

Our family has been working through some children/family classics for a few years now. We were looking for something a little older for our girls to grow up into. We absolutely love this set. The soft colored pictures keep help keep the younger ones captivated in the story and keeps them from squirming too much. It is hard to keep our 2 year old's attention at story time (if she sits too long, she'll fall asleep and she can't let that happen).

I loved this series when I was a kid. I bought the set for my niece and my friend's daughter, 8 and 9 years old. Their mothers tell me it was the perfect gift, they've been reading them for school and because they like them.

4 out of 5 stars The Little House Collection Boxed Set (Full Color).......2007-01-06

The Little House books are wonderful, and the color illustrations add to the appeal for children. I wish the entire series was included in this collection.
