I'm soooo looking forward to getting this terrific Economics Dictionary/Encyclopedia. Wonder what's taking the publisher so long to get it out? Price is about one-third what the original cost. I thought of getting that original one back in graduate school (Ohio State University). But now the softbound will do just fine, as a welcome addition to my library. The Book will definitely give you the basics of Karl Marx and Marxism and get you beyond them. The book consists of essays by modern authors on the various concepts of Marx: surplus value, labour power, mode of production, dialectics, labour theory of value, etc.
Marxian Economics is both politics, sociology, economics, history and philosophy, all these discussed in this book. The essays are very easy to follow and understand.
You will crave for more after reading this book.

I must have a collection of a 1000 cookbooks but this one is on my SAVE shelf! I have used it many times and have given copies to my married children and friends. It's a very handy book when you're stumped for what to do with extra food or leftovers...a very good buy! The recipes are excellent, too!

I have read with great interest the reviews posted here regarding this book. I am very interested in reading it myself. Yet I can't seem to find this at any of the libraries (and I live in a big city)! I prefer to not purchase books until I have reviewed them (this saves shelf space, too). How frustrating!
A word from Lois Willand, Use-It-Up's author.......2003-07-30
I'm responding to the review by Rhonda, who wanted fresh new ideas for leftovers. Rhonda is correct in the sense that my Use-It-Up works with leftovers from a basic standard approach. Many cooks, myself included, need this down-to-earth approach. What Rhonda calls "common sense" in using leftovers, is something not everyone has, so "Use-It-Up: A Guide for Minimizing Food Waste" provides a starting point for learning the basics of how to handle leftovers. Once you master the basics-quick, easy, and inexpensive ways of using leftovers- you can move on (if you care to) to the fancier, more labor-intensive and more expensive ways of using up your food. As for me, I prefer to get my leftovers to the table quickly, cheaply, and easily!!

The reviews of this were so good, I was expecting to get a terrific, fresh view of using leftovers...not so! This was not at all what I was expecting. There was not much in it that common sense wouldn't tell you. However, I DID like the introduction--but that doesn't warrant the cost of the book, I don't believe!
A Necessary Buy.......2002-06-22
I NEVER knew what do with with those stray bits and pieces of leftovers or those vegetable scraps after the right amount for a recipe was used. This is a clear and easy book with both lists of ideas on how to use up something as well as recipes such as chili rice with peppers and gingerbread-pear cake. I first heard about it in "The Tightwad Gazette" and am very glad I bought it.

Should be called financial basics..........2004-03-07
I figured a book with a title of "Build your own mutual fund" would be an interesting read nevertheless a good introduction to building "folios" (see foliofn.com for more info on folios.)
However this book focused more on the basics of personal finance, which I know is the most important aspect of investing but if I wanted a book to tell me how to figure out my net worth I would buy a book on personal finance basics.
This book was supposed to be about creating your own basket of stocks but instead it wanted to teach us the basics of finance and I feel I wasted my time and money purchasing this book since everything in this book can be found on foliofn or in any "how to save money for your retirement book" which is very unfortunate since the author, myself and I'm sure others feel that the folio concept will just get bigger and bigger. I have even considered starting a folio except I realized that if I were to really make anything out of it I would need to switch most of my trading capitol over to foliofn just to try it out, and that is something I am not ready or willing to do.
Overall I feel that if you need a book on the basics of personal finance and you want a short introduction to this interesting investment approach this book may be for you. For everyone else please wait for a more advanced book on folios to arrive.

While Chion's book 'David Lynch' is overly concerned with biography as is noted, it does avoid the quasi new-age readings of this work which is flawed for that reason.
As Slavoj Zizek points out (directly referring to Nochimson's book), in 'The Art of the Ridiculous Sublime: On David Lynch?s Lost Highway,' Nochimson is "focused on the flow of Life Energy that allegedly connects all events and runs through all scenes and persons, turning Lynch into the poet of a Jungian universal subconscious spiritualized libido," which is too easy a path to take in reference to Lynch's work.
Unfortunately, the best work on David Lynch has yet to be written.
The most insightful book on Lynch's work to date!.......2002-06-24
David Lynch's brilliance as a film-maker lies in his ability to transmit meaning through images rather than dialogue. Consequently, much of the body of his work is very hard to decode conventionally. Nochimson, however, gets around this brilliantly - by incorporating its linguistic indecipherability in her thesis. What she advocates when watching a Lynch movie, then, is a letting go of any hope of finding conventional meaning. Further, she defines such a conceit as inherently masculine - a phallic will-to-control that Lynch decries. Remarkably, this thesis is as equally applicable to Lynch's more mainstream work (e.g. The Elephant Man) as it is to his radical later output (e.g. Wild At Heart). If you want to view David Lynch's films in a radically innovative new light, buy this book today!
Super Duper!.......2001-06-21
This is one of my favorites. Again, not nearly as personal and spiritually engaging as "Lynch on Lynch", but near the top of the heap. Martha's adoration for Lynch, and her grounding in the worlds of both academic and personal art make for perfect doorways into the dialogue she shares with David. He's the man, and this a unique way to enter the center... As the drapes peel back, and the Francis Bacon book closes, Angelo's music blows saliva bubbles into the air, and a bunch of really nice people smoking American Spirits come ambling up the crooked walkway. They're talking 'bout coffee... They're talking about trees... They're talkin' 'bout art!
Cuts to the heart of Lynch's works.......2000-03-19
This book shows how clueless some of Lynch's interpreters have been (and still are!). If you want to "decode" Twin Peaks or Lost Highway, this book will hold your hand as you let go to 'get it'. The book is as much a corrective lens on the critique of Lynch as the author points out Lynch being towards Hollywood. Hitchcock:Bach::Lynch:Brahms -- not for casual "listening". This book may seem a bit wordy, but it does have a multitude of "points" (another reviewer must have skimmed this book!) : e.g. communities based on masculine control, disallowing feminine influence. The notes themselves offer much needed background.
locates lynch in popular heaven-hell.......2000-02-16
This is the best Lynch book, more penetrating than Lynch's own interviews. Nochimson boldly charts the universe of Lynch and gives it both mythological plausability and a solid, coherent locale: the world of visual and audio pop-culture chunks, romantically deteriorated and as intense, wispy, and spectral as cotton candy. One of the best, and most well-documented, works on an auteur since Bogdanovich's work on Hitchcock.

Very touching like the film THE MOVIE HERO.......2006-02-10
This is an engaging and well written book, almost in journal fashion, about a young out-of-stater who ventures into Hollywood with big dreams of making it in the motion picture industry. Blake Gardner is 22, young and untouched. He gets his foot into the door only to quickly learn just how cutthroat his superiors can be. He is tortured and his faith is put to a huge test. Will he come out intact or will be be eaten alive? Any fan of the film that Brad T. Gottfred directed (The Movie Hero) will thoroughly enjoy this book. Highly recommended reading.

As a true fan of the character Blake from "The Movie Hero," I could not wait to read this latest installment. I was not disappointed. To understand through Blake's eyes the jaded soul destroying evils of Hollywood, I was left with worry that the individualistic spirit of Blake would be forever ruined by Hollywood. With the panache of a young Teddy Roosevelt and the fresh bravado of a young Marlon Brando (except able to speak clearly and no propensity to gain hundreds of pounds), Blake forges his own way through Hollywood's pitfalls, not unscathed, but certainly intact.
Here in these 240 pages, we can definitely truly debate the truthfullness of the adage: what does not kill you certainly can make you stronger! While the reader might not be stronger, he will certainly be ready for Blake's next swashbuckling adventure!
The real question is when is the movie coming out? Maybe they can make it when they are through making so many darn gay cowboy movies!

Zany Characterization of Hollywood. Another Remarkable Display of Deductive Skills........2006-07-05
The Devil to Pay (1937), The Four of Hearts (1938), and The Origin of Evil (1951) roughly fall in Ellery Queen's middle period and are unique in that the setting is Hollywood. While the portrayal of the Hollywood film industry could not be more farfetched and inaccurate, the three stories are humorous and entertaining, and make good mysteries.
The Four of Hearts is a zany sequel to The Devil to Pay. Ellery finally meets his employer, the young Jacques Butcher, colloquially known as Boy Wonder, executive vice-president of production at Magna Studios. Unfortunately, as Ellery begins his work on his first screen play, an elaborate publicity stunt for the new production is derailed by a double murder. As Ellery begins his investigation, he finds himself crossing swords again with Inspector Glucke of the Los Angeles Police Department. And perhaps what is most unexpected, Ellery himself becomes enamored with a popular, strikingly beautiful, Hollywood gossip columnist.
Despite the hilarious caricature of movie stars, producers, screen writers, and gossip columnists, the murder mystery itself is still quite good and the puzzle will challenge even the astute reader. Ellery's deductions are impressive.
The Four of Hearts has been reissued by HarperCollins. Sometimes an early Pocket Book edition can be found. Another possibility is a 2000 publication by Four Walls Eight Windows of the three Ellery Queen stories that take place in Hollywood under the title The Hollywood Murders.
