5 out of 5 stars Tells the real reason businesses fail and people go broke.......1998-10-23

This book goes into the real world of business by examining the basic cause of most business failures--a breakup of the partnership among those who started or joined the business. It does not matter what form the business has--corporation, limited liability, partnership, or whatever. When things go wrong, members of the firm can involve others in crimes, tax liabilities, and other personal asset robbing schemes even when the victims have no idea what's happening. This book tells what to look for when joining with others, how to protect personal assets against government, creditors, and others who punch right through the corporate shield to strip personal bank accounts, houses, and other assets from their owners. Even if those assets had been in the family years before the business was started.

Tells what to do in setting up a company, how to use a "Key Indicator" approach to running it so as to catch malfeasance before it even affects the firm, and to keep everyone on the right track to make the firm grow.

Book Description

High Marks for the Internet Legal Guide

"The Internet Legal Guide is a fascinating exploration of discovery in understanding the legal frontiers of the Internet. Dennis Powers does an immense service for all of us in an Internet form of business with this comprehensive and thorough guide." —Ahnalira Koan, Laughing Place Travel (www.ourlaughingplace.com)

"I feel that this book is invaluable and a must read not only for my management team and all of my employees, but also my clients. I especially appreciated the text from actual agreement examples, as well as the discussions of provisions that followed them. I encourage anyone and everyone to buy and read this book twice. The first time to show you everything you have been doing wrong, and the second time to learn how to do it right the next time." —Jim Teece, President and Chief Executive Officer, Project A, Inc. (www.ProjectA.com)

"This book is rich in content and practical advice. It is filled with informative-as well as entertaining-descriptions of the latest developments in cyberlaw. Most importantly, it gives anyone interested in doing business on the Web the know-how to avoid costly legal pitfalls and problems." —Ray August, Professor of Business Law (http://august1.com/about/)

"What I really like about this book is that it takes a business approach to Internet issues. This is a book for business people with an eye to the bottom line, and how businesses can capitalize on the Web and not get entangled in legal issues. The Internet Legal Guide is essential reading for small business owners, who can not afford the luxury of an in-house legal counsel. A savvy business owner will find this book a road map to turn the Web from threat to opportunity." —Kevin Talbert, Chief Information Officer, Southern Oregon University

"The New Economy is arriving. Even as the stock market and businesses adjust to absorb the 'irrational exuberance' of the late 1990s, consumers and businesses continue unabated in their march to use technology and the Internet to reduce costs, to increase profits, to improve service, to increase choice, and generally to increase the efficiency and potential of all that we do. Dennis Powers has written a timely and informative book to help prepare the nonlawyer, and even to educate lawyers, to prepare for and benefit from this new online world." —Richard Keck, Partner, Telecommunications and Electronic Commerce Practice Group, Troutman Sanders LLP

"A wonderful book that melds the practical into the legal, so we all can navigate our virtual twenty-first-century operations through todays legal-infested waters. I wish I had had it two years ago!! I could have saved a lot of time and legal costs when I was organizing my Internet company. Its so convenient and efficient to have all the material in one place. (The good news is I can still save and benefit from the many excellent ideas.)" —Charles "Hop" Fuhrmann, Chairman, HealthyPlace.com, Inc.; Chairman and CEO, Texaco Limited

4 out of 5 stars Good content, a little dry, no CD-ROM included.......2003-07-07

I wanted to write up a quick review for you. The book has some excellent content, and covers all the important areas of running your own business and understanding all the legal issues involved. The sample contracts and agreements are detailed and provide an in-depth explanation for each section. For myself, it is being used to set up web site and be able to sell my software over the Internet. It isn't specifically geared towards people like myself, but it is one of the few books out there that deals with the very important area of Internet legal issues.

My only negative comments are the lack of exciting writing, yes I know this is a legal book, and the lack of an enclosed CD-ROM. It would have been easy to enclose one with electronic versions of all the sample forms, or at least include one at the authors online site. Since there are so many forms included, this is the least I would expect. As for the writing style, it can be a little dry at times, and for me, covered international issues more than necessary. Otherwise a worthwhile addition to your shelf, to be read through quickly and then used as a reference.

4 out of 5 stars Solid legal advise.......2002-03-15

Having worked in this area for a while it was a pleasure to finally read a book that can fill in so many of the holes. This guide covers all the legal area of the internet. The examples are especially helpful -- and interesting. The complicate legal areas are explained in reasonable language. There are very good sections on trademark and domain names, and on the legal problem with setting up your own web site.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Chinese Cook Book.......2006-03-23

This is a book on authentic Chinese food. It is based on a trip made by the authors that covered much of Chins, talking with Chef's and photographing their dishes.

This book is a large format book, profusely illustrated with literally hundreds of color photographs. The photographs show mostly food, but also a bit of the cultural scene -- where culture in this case usually involves food.

The one problem with authentic Chinese food is getting the proper ingredients. For instance under Tea, they say that China's finest greet tea is grown around Longjing, and is called Dragon Well. Here in the middle of the Nevada desert trying to find such ingredients is pretty difficult. Thank goodness for the web where I found it for sale.

All in all, this is the ultimate Chinese cookbook. There are hundreds of recipies, and they all came directly from China.

          Product Description

If I had an infinite amount of time, and infinite amounts of money, I would do exactly what Di Xianghua did: wander across China, sampling regional delicacies in their natural habitat, digging in to the history of each dish, and telling the stories of the dishes and the people who introduced them. It reads like a memoir in food with accompanying pictures to make your mouth water. The cultural context of each dish and regional cuisine is lovingly described, going into much greater detail than the typical (but inaccurate) explanation of China's ""4 Great Cuisines"": Northern, Sichuanese, Hunanese, and Cantonese. A word of warning: don't read this book on an empty stomach!

            An excellent read.

5 out of 5 stars Building Tomorrows Future with Todays Money.......2002-03-06

This review will be short and sweet. I my opinion the author hit the nail on the head. They simply wrote the easy true about the importance of teaching young kids how to save money today for their future goals. It show them how to save without going without today. They will notice all the things they can still have while watching their future money grow geometrically.
Most of us know how kids feel about the here and now, "I have to have it now". This book teaches them how they can have both. Great book for such a small price.

5 out of 5 stars Complex Material Made Simple.......2002-03-06

This book takes a complicated subject and explains building wealth in simple terms. It is easy to understand and practical. It does not try to impress with complex theory and information. It gives specific ideas and examples of how anyone can, using a consistent and disciplined approach, build real wealth for their children and families. The best solutions are often those that seems almost too easy - but these are often the strokes of genius that change our lives. This book and its methods and ideas are in this category. What a bargain! What a program!

5 out of 5 stars This Tiny Investment Worth Millions!.......2002-02-19

The premise of this book is simple and, like this review, mercifully short. It is never too early to begin financial planning! With simple examples and real-life experience, the authors make a very strong case for creating a painless way of reaching financial security for your immediate family and generations to come. You cannot rewrite history, but with the help of this book you can alter your children's financial future in ways that you never imagined!

              Book Description

Traditional accounts of John D. Rockefeller and the Standard Oil Company, as well as recent best-selling books on the subject, still accept without question charges of unethical and anti-competitive behavior by the American oil industry. In this pathbreaking synthesis of cultural, business, gender, and intellectual history, Roger and Diana Davids Olien explore how this negative image of the petroleum industry was created—and how this image in turn helped shape policy toward the industry in ways that were sometimes at odds with both the goals of reformers and the public interest.

By turning a critical eye on sources that have often been accepted at face value and examining the self-interests of oil industry critics, the authors produce a more balanced, complex picture of the industry than has previously been offered. Their case study of the impact of ideology offers a striking example of how business must be understood through its cultural context and offers a new approach to understanding problems of regulation and reform.

As a strict constitutionalist who abhors every conceivable aspect of the income tax, I urge every taxpayer in America to read this book, and the one by Boortz as well. The Fair Tax does, as other reviewers have noted, have a few warts, and the book doesn't help by claiming the bogus "24% raise". However, the replacement of the unconstitutional income tax and elimination of the government's meddling "social engineering" make it the best alternative available, as Ose and Boortz both stress. The real strength of both books is that they not only present the Fair Tax proposal but also provide supporting rationale, advantages, and benefits.
My one Fair Tax caveat that neither author addresses is that the Fair Tax makes it so very easy for our 565-stooge imperial congress to increase taxes by simply bumping the fair tax rate up a cent or two at will. I question why the book fails to address an inviolate rate ceiling as part of the solution. I would hope that future editions would do so.
Whatever, I suggest that it is to your advantage to read the book.

3 out of 5 stars One Lie, Lots of Truth.......2006-12-09

I'm a big supporter of the Fair Tax and this book is OK. But it's title contains one huge lie, one being peddled by the supporters that needs to be stopped. The Fair Tax will *not* give you a 25% pay raise. It is impossible for that to happen unless prices skyrocket. The embedded tax being ripped out of your paycheck must absolutely be equal to the amount that will be paid by the Fair Tax. Where is the money going to come from to raise your take-home pay up to your gross pay? If your employer is paying $10,000 worth of taxes on your $50,000 salary, the Fair Tax will mean he pays $10,000 at the cash register, then pays you $40,000. Dale Jorgenson has specifically noted that Boortz and Ose and others are mispresenting the Fair Tax by claiming you will get a 25% pay raise.

The principle advantage of the Fair Tax is the efficiency, the simplicity and the openness. And the massive cut in tax compliance cost. But this nonsense being peddled that money is going to magically appear in your paycheck needs to be stamped out.

This book itself is OK. But its economic igorance is annoying. Much better discussion can be found just by typing "Fair Tax" into google. The Fair Tax is awaiting serious consideration so what we might eventually see may bear little resemblance to what is proposed here.

5 out of 5 stars Fair Tax the best way to fund government.......2006-08-23

The most important thing about the Fair Tax - EVERYONE would know EVERYTIME they paid their income tax. The sneaky way the government is funded now - through witholding taxes - keeps people from knowing how much they pay in income tax. In fact, most people think they don't pay income tax when they get their refund!

If there were a national sales tax, then every time someone purchased something, they would see right there on the sales slip, how much they paid to fund the government.

The wealthy would pay MORE tax, just as most people want. Why? Because they buy more. And the things they buy cost more.

Saving would be encouraged. Much red tape would be eliminated. No one would pay tax on necessities.

There is no down side to the Fair Tax.

5 out of 5 stars I've heard it all, yet still support the FairTax!.......2006-07-27

For the blowhards who say the government will raise taxes on guns, but not Big Macs, I have a guestion to ask them, "have you read this bill?" or better yet, "do you understand this bill?".
The qualities of the FairTax are revenue neutral and the consumption tax is a flat rate...across the board! The government couldn't adjust the tax rate on one item and not adjust the tax rate on another item. For this to happen, it would have to be a legislative proposal that would then have to be ratified by the states.
The obvious solution to our rediculous tax structure here in the United States is to simply get rid of the income tax completely as it was so clearly printed in our constitution. The only problem with this is that politicians are having a hard enough time just considering the FairTax right now so what makes you think that they'll even think once about eliminating the income tax at all??? Politicians love the income tax (especially the Demoncrats and Greenies) because it creates a hardened class-warfare system that they can use to run campaign platforms from. The well-known "tax the rich" or "make the rich pay more" versus the "welfare state" or the "entitlement classes" are the best grounds of political warfare that career politicians use to stir up their voter base!
This book completely urges the reader to become actively engaged in supporting the FairTax, which is the best idea to eleviate the current tax burden. America is too rich to tax into submission and with the passage of the FairTax we can become even more successful in our own rights.
This is a must read and is a companion book to "The FairTax Book" by Neal Boortz and John Linder. Both should be read and understood. This idea of complete tax reform cannot pass until the citizenry of America is better informed of this. We have to let the pigs in D.C. know that we understand what is going on and demand a change!

If you've seen Bad Lieutenant or The Piano, you've seen all there is to see of Harvey Keitel--but what do you really know about him? Although Marshall Fine's biography lacks the intimate insights that direct involvement with his subject would entail, he does an excellent job of collating what Keitel has said about his work--and what others have said about Keitel's performances--over the years, from his electrifying "debut" in Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets through the fallow '80s to the gradual comeback that culminated with his performance as Mr. White in Reservoir Dogs.

Most significantly to Fine's credit, he takes seriously Keitel's desire to have his career viewed as a development of craft and a journey of self-discovery, and thus analyzes Keitel's performances (and the circumstances behind them) with sensitivity. Although this emphasis is based in part on editorial necessity--there's simply more documentation of Keitel's professional life than his personal one--Fine does rather well with the available resources. You won't necessarily know Keitel after reading The Art of Darkness, but you will perhaps come closer to understanding him. --Ron Hogan

                Book Description

A widely praised biography of one of Hollywood's most admired actors-now in paperback.

Harvey Keitel has made his menacing presence felt in some of the greatest cult movies ever, from Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets and Taxi Driver to Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. With more than fifty films to his credit, Keitel is one of the most sought-after actors in Hollywood. Yet unlike so many of his contemporaries, he constantly surprises us with daring performances in independent or groundbreaking films, such as The Bad Lieutenant, The Last Temptation of Christ, The Piano, and Smoke. His willingness to take risks and experiment-to continually expand his craft and self-knowledge-has inspired a generation of young actors and directors. Harvey Keitel: The Art of Darkness gives a complete portrait of one of the most admired and influential figures working in film: his years on the street in Brooklyn as a kid, his time in the Marines, his early promise and association with Scorsese and Robert De Niro, his firing from the set of Apocalypse Now, his self-imposed Hollywood exile in the eighties, his volatile marriage, and, of course, his extraordinary and well-deserved success.

the only way "harvey keitel, the art of darkness" could have been any better is if he had written it himself. too bad mr. fine didn't have more to say about his personal life but maybe that's the way mr. keitel would have wanted it. he is such a gifted versatile actor who only gets better with age, it's only natural to wonder about his personal life. i hope some day he will find the time to write his own biography. he has given many academy award winning performances in his career and i hope some day to see him win one.

2 out of 5 stars Rehashes old material.......1999-08-05

I was really disappointed with this book. There wasn't one piece of information in it that I didn't already know; and many pieces of information that I know that weren't in the book. In addition, regardless of what actors say (and Mr. Keitel has often said this) about the characters they play not reflecting their personal lives, it's not true. A person's personal life is always reflected on the screen; it's what makes the actor able to project the character they are playing. Therefore, I wanted to know more about Mr. Keitel's personal life so I could get a better picture of his professional life. I wanted to know more about his past and current relationships with Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro. Perhaps I should write my own book.

                2 out of 5 stars A Mere Peek at a Genius.......1999-01-13

When I saw the word 'unauthorized' on the front of this book, I bought it thinking I would find out some real facts about this wonderful actor. Instead, I was spoon fed glossy peeks into what makes Keitel tick, most of which I could have looked up myself. I believe this author was too scared to write the truth. Who can blame him? This book is nothing more than a big disappointment. I never even found out why Copolla really kicked Keitel out of the Phillipines. That alone would have been worth the price of the book.

                5 out of 5 stars Very Enlightening!!!.......1998-06-22

I was always under the impression that Mr. Keitel was a somewhat "dark" man with a lot of demons(who doesn't have some of those demons to deal with?)He just was lucky enough to find himself an outlet to deal with those facets of his life. It is said that Mr. Keitel will only talk about what he wants to talk about, about his personal life etc., but if you look closely he is telling you a lot about himself through the characters that he protrays. (I thought this about Mr. Keitel before I read the book). Mr. Keitel has a God given talent and he has used it well. To entertain us and to understand himself. And maybe even to help us deal with our own demons. I know he helped me with some of mine. Thank you Mr. Keitel.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I had hoped to read..........2006-08-01

I have always appreciated the work of Mark Twain. He manages to combine a witty, sardonic pen with a quality narrative approach that has always kept me engaged in his wonderful stories. So, I had hoped that this little collection of snippets from his works would be equally charming.

Unfortunately, I came to realize about halfway through this book that Twain's biting sarcasm is only pallatable in sporadic doses. In this book, there is no narrative to follow and no characters to develop. Instead, his many biting comments about morality, the church, and virtue are slammed up against each other, to a rather jarring effect. He repeatedly lambasts anyone and everyone who would encourage young people to make good choices, with no breather in between.

In this form, I found Twain to be mean-spirited, arrogant, and offensive. Though there are a few touching moments that prevent me from rating it with 1 star, I would not recommend this book to anyone, especially not to children. The nasty side of Twain's wit is exposed for all of its ugliness, and I did not enjoy the view.

5 out of 5 stars Better, Much Better Than William Bennett.......2003-12-02

This is a great little book. A gift to kids that will touch their minds and set off mini-explosions of laughter and possibility. William Bennett, the idiot of our times, could never have thought of this stuff and doesn't have the intellect or imagination to be able to write this well. Let's buy this book and dismiss William Bennett. Mark Twain is an American original.

Even a book this small reveals how wonderful was the pen of Mark Twain. It is brimming with good-natured mischief and well-told yarns. It is the perfect antidote to the smarmy nonsense plopped onto the bookshelves by The Gambling Gourmand, William Bennett. A perfect gift for an intelligent youngster, and a delight for adults.

                  Ste-e-e-eamboat's a-comin'!"

Along the banks of the great Mississippi River, a young boy named Samuel Clemens raced to the docks whenever he heard that familiar cry. He dreamed of exploring the world beyond his river town. Little did he know that one day he would become the famous writer Mark Twain, and write about his boyhood adventures along the bustling river waterfront in the classic stories The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

Sam's exploits take him from the printing presses of the Hannibal Courier to the decks of the steamboats that travel the mighty Mississippi, and even to the Wild West.

Now noted historian William Anderson tells the colorful story of Sam's life as he grows from a mischievous boy into the enterprising author. Dan Andreasen's fresh, vibrant paintings capture the spirit of the storyteller who will live on forever as one of America's literary icons.

                  Book Description

First time in paperback: From a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer, an imaginative re-creation of Samuel Clemens's boyhood in Hannibal, Missouri-just in time for Ken Burns's forthcoming Mark Twain documentary.

While Mark Twain remains one of our most quintessentially American writers, the actual boyhood experiences that fueled his most enduring literature remained largely unexplored-until now. Twain's early years were a decidedly un-innocent time, marked by deaths of friends and family and his father's bankruptcy. Twain dealt with those personal tragedies through humor and the tall tale. From the time that a ten-year-old Samuel Clemens lit out on his own and boarded his first Mississippi steamer to his first encounter with a traveling "mesmerizer" (which ignited his lifelong penchant for acting and spectacle), from the brooding sense of guilt and fear of eternal damnation inculcated into him at church to the superstitions and stories of witchcraft he learned from the blacks on his farm, Powers unforgettably shows how Mark Twain was shaped by the distinctly American landscape, culture, and people of Hannibal, Missouri. Jay Parini, the celebrated biographer of Robert Frost, called this "a long-needed evocation of the boyhood of the man who invented boyhood for all time...An immensely shrewd and deeply engaging book, a great gift to all of us who love Twain."

5 out of 5 stars Before there was Mark Twain there was Sam Clemens.......1999-12-21

Most biographies on Sam Clemens deal with him as the writer Mark Twain, but as Hannibal native Ron Powers points out there was the boy Sam Clemens who lived in Hannibal, Missouri and that is where the stories came from. The town of Hannibal on the banks of the Mississippi had an important impact on the making of the boy who would become a writer and it takes somebody who lived in Hannibal as a boy to understand the pull of the town and the river. Ron Powers paints a portrait of the boy, his family, the town, and the river and how he became the man the world knows. This biography will be an important part of the canon of Mark Twain as was the Justin Kaplan biography and all that followed.

3 out of 5 stars Sam Clemens Through the Eyes of Ron Powers-Dangerous Water.......1999-12-07

Dangerous Water A Biography by Sam Powers

Dangerous Waters by Ron Powers is a Biography of the boy who became Mark Twain. The book is an insight into the genealogy of Samuel Clemens. Powers tells how the Family finally came to settle in Hannibal, Missouri after living in various other places in the growing United States. The book also goes into great detail about some of the origins of the style with which Clemens wrote. There is no doubt that the time that young Clemens spent in the slave quarters at his fathers home shaped him in many ways. Hearing slave spirituals such as "Better Day A-Comin" and "You Gonna Reap Just What You Sow" played a big part in shaping the man who would write about Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Fin. Powers goes on to write about how Clemens managed to go from being one of the literary elite in the 1800s to bankruptcy at the turn of the century. He tells of Clemens' life in a European society where he was welcomed but never really was at home. The book also covers Clemens' rise out of bankruptcy by traveling the world and giving lectured in places like Ceylon and South Africa and many other far off places that most Americans could only dream about. Even through this, the low point in his life, Clemens managed to catch the attention of the American society with a sort of neo-pioneer commitment to claw his way back to the life he had grown to love in his homeland. Overall I found the descriptions of the life of Samuel Clemens to be very exciting and a joy to learn. The vividness with which Powers tells the stories of Clemens' life as a young man in Hannibal made the tales interesting and captivating. However in some parts of the book, I found Powers to be somewhat wordy and hard to follow. At times, the author is crystal clear and I could actually imagine what the events he was describing must have been like to Clemens. On the other hand, some parts of the book felt extremely tedious to read. Ron Powers is a journalist, novelist and non fiction writer. Powers is the author of eight books and a Pulitzer Prize winner. He has been a columnist for The Chicago Sun Times and GQ magazine. He has been published in magazines such as the New York Times Book Review and Conde Nast Traveler. Powers, Like Clemens grew up in Hannibal, Missouri. I would have to say that this fact alone gives him a unique perspective on what it must have been like growing up to become Mark Twain. Powers is not the only author to study the life of Samuel Clemens and Mark Twain. There are many other authors who have taken on the task of writing about one of America's first super stars. Mr. Clemens and Mark Twain, A Biography by Justin Kaplan and Inventing Mark Twain, The Lives of Samuel Langhorne Clemens by Andrew Hoffman are among the most popular. I think this book is best suited for college students or adults who enjoyed reading any of Twain's work and ever found themselves wondering where Twain got his ideas for his early writings such as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Dangerous Waters will also interest anyone who wants to learn more about authors of the American Renaissance. This book offers a great insight into the development of Sam Clemens as a writer. So I believe anyone who has ever heard the name Mark Twain will find this book interesting.

5 out of 5 stars A book that breathes life into a legend.......1999-04-30

I do not know of a writer who parses the American cultural landscape with as much intelligence and wisdom as Ron Powers. If you care about America's soul, and how it is faring as forces of modernity encroach upon it, you simply must become acquainted with Ron Powers's writing. This journey through the boyhood days of Sam Clemens is Powers at the height of his form.

                    Book Description

Mark Twain's LIFE ON THE MISSISSIPPI, first published in 1883, is a pre–Civil War memoir of the steamboat era and describes the fulfillment of Twain's childhood dream to become a steamboat pilot. Twain records his observations during his many years of traveling the river from St. Louis to New Orleans and reflects on the people and places of his childhood, the way things looked and felt in the memorable locales of his growing up and his later return to them in maturity.

It was at the mature age of nine that he found he could endure this no longer. One day when the big packet came down and stopped at Hannibal, he slipped aboard and crept under one of the boats on the upper deck. Then the signal-bells rang, the steamer backed away and swung into midstream; he was really going at last. He crept from beneath the boat and sat looking out over the water and enjoying the scenery. Then it began to rain.
