5 out of 5 stars Far beyond expectations........2001-09-08

The first two weeks, the section on video surveillance and terms and equipment saved us a few hours of research, cleared up some confusion and saved us ordering some things for a job that just wouldn't have worked. At that point, we would have been happy if that was all we ever got from this book.

But we're finding a WHOLE lot more. Probably what I like best is it's written like a book and not a technical manual, so it's enjoyable to read. Also, unlike most security things I read, it goes way beyond "what to do and why." It does a great job with the most important part: "Exactly HOW to do."

Great Example: The author claimed that someone with no experience could follow directions in the book to hook up a VCR, TV, mini-camera, plus cable and power sources and have it all up and recording in just two minutes. Our part-time secretary is a Culinary student. She followed the directions and actually had it recording with a few seconds to spare. THAT was pretty neat.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent tool for any LP staff.......2000-08-11

I got more information out of Rich's book than any of the criminal justice texts I've read over the years. Having worked for companies with good loss prevention programs as well as companies with poor programs I can relate to the "Policy B" stores talked about in the book.

Rich- Any tips for dealing with companies that pay lip service to LP but balk at using anything other than 1950's technology that you can include in the next revision?

5 out of 5 stars Increase Awareness, Reduce Loss, Avoid Liability.......2000-03-02

Those are the tenets of the corporation I work for, and this book is a perfect addition to a library for anyone who wants those results.

Rich has communicated effectively the steps and tools necessary to reduce loss in your retail location and NOT GET SUED.

Many self help books can be dry reading. Not this one. Every point made is followed up by a story or anecdote that assists the reader in visualizing the problem and how solutions can be applied.

Whether you are a loss prevention professional, a private investigator, or a store owner/operator this is a must read if you want to reduce your losses.

1 out of 5 stars Sales automation jumping on the CRM bandwagon.......2000-09-17

I found this book a waste of time and money. I got the distinct feeling that the author wrote a book about sales automation ROI, and then substituted "CRM" for the words "sales automation" after the fact. Anyone who actually works in the CRM field for a business will know more than this author does about CRM.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money.......2000-08-11

Now I know why calculating ROI for CRM initiatives is so difficult - people try to do it after reading this book! All this contains is a repackaging of some basic finance & statistics topics. If you know anything about NPV calculations, cash flow analysis and probability you've already got everything contained in the book. Additionally, the text is laborious to read. There seems to be no thought in terms of flow from one topic to the next and the author can't seem to remember if he's writing about CRM or simply sales force automation.

4 out of 5 stars Good field guide.......1999-11-21

A lot of core CRM content in a concise format. Short, easy ready chapters with just the facts

4 out of 5 stars excellent resource for the sales manager and CRM specialist.......1999-10-01

The author does an excellent job of developing the methodological framework for the Customer Management ROI. The reader gains a well-designed roadmap for successful CM sales and implementations.

1 out of 5 stars Great book if you want to fall asleep!.......1999-09-28

The author repeats himself over and over and over again. It sure cured my insomnia though.

3 out of 5 stars Not for the average baker..........2007-02-27

I ordered this book anticipating lots of great, well-known cookie recipes. I was disappointed when I read through and saw that there was an entire section of recipes that aren't really cookies-more like after dinner biscuits. The recipes are also complex and call for ingredients that only a professional baker would have. It would be very difficult to have children help with the recipes, especially ones that have many steps or require long breaks between steps. I returned this and will look for a more family friendly cookie book.

          3 out of 5 stars So-So Cookie Book.......2006-09-28

If you are looking for a dessert cookbook, try the 500 Cupcakes book instead. It is as if someone didn't proofread this book. The front of the book says to use self-rising flour but then in all of the recipes it says to use all-purpose flour. There are tons of confusing things like this throughout the book. But this book sure is cute!

5 out of 5 stars A "must-have" for anyone who enjoys diversity in dessert.......2005-11-06

A compact compendium of five hundred recipes for cookies drawn from all over the world, Philippa Vanstone's 500 Cookies is organized with separate chapters devoted to classic cookies, teatime cookies, cookies for kids, chocolate cookies, celebration cookies, wholesome healthy cookies, cookies for special diets, cookie bars, dessert cookies, and savory cookies & crackers. An informative introduction and a thoroughly "user friendly" index round out this remarkable collection of delicious cookie treats that range from Scottish Shortbread; Polenta Crescents; Chocolate Spice Cookies; and Cinnamon Stars; to Applesauce Cookies; Chewy Almond Cherry Bars; Cream Cheese Cookie Slices; and Blue Cheese Crumbles. Along with the list of ingredients and "kitchen cook friendly" instructions, each cookie is also illustrated with a color photograph. 500 Cookies will soon prove to be a family favorite on the cookbook shelf as it showcases traditional fare with exotic offerings suitable for any and all dining occasions from after school snacks to elegant dining occasions.

                Book Description

                How can we help poor people earn more from their knowledge--rather than from their sweat and muscle alone? This book is about increasing the earnings of poor people in poor countries from their innovation, knowledge, and creative skills. Case studies look at the African music industry;
traditional crafts and ways to prevent counterfeit crafts designs; the activities of fair trade organizations; biopiracy and the commercialization of ethnobotanical knowledge; the use of intellectual property laws and other tools to protect traditional knowledge. The contributors motivation is
sometimes to maintain the art and culture of poor people, but they recognize that except in a museum setting, no traditional skill can live on unless it has a viable market. Culture and commerce more often complement than conflict in the cases reviewed here. The book calls attention to the unwritten
half of the World Trade Organizations Agreement on the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS). TRIPS is about knowledge that industrial countries own, and which poor people buy. This book is about knowledge that poor people in poor countries generate and have to sell. It will be of
interest to students and scholars of international trade and law, and to anyone with an interest in ways developing countries can find markets for cultural, intellectual, and traditional knowledge.

                  Book Description

Increasing economic competition combined with the powerful threat of transnational activism are pushing firms to develop new political strategies. Over the past decade a growing number of corporations have adopted policies of industry self-regulation—corporate codes of conduct, social and environmental standards, and auditing and monitoring systems. A Public Role for the Private Sector explores the phenomenon of industry self-regulation through three different cases—environment, labor, and information privacy—where corporate leaders appear to be converging on industry self-regulation as the appropriate response to competing pressures. Political and economic risks, reputational effects, and learning within the business community all influence the adoption of a self-regulatory strategy, but there are wide variations in the strength and character of it across industries and issue areas. Industry self-regulation raises significant questions about the place of the private sector in regulation and governance, and the accountability, legitimacy and power of industry at a time of rapid globalization.

3 out of 5 stars Material is valuable; style is uncut social science, which is not pretty.......2007-07-26

Somehow, the most important anti-poverty program of the last half century has gotten almost no public attention. It is the Earned Income Tax Credit ("EITC"). It is larger in dollar amount than Temporary Assistance to Needy Families ("TANF") the successor to the univerersally despised Aid to Families with Dependent Children ("AFDC.") It is actually the largest and most succcessul anti-povety program of modern times. What it does is simple. It gives a substantial tax credit to the working poor. If the recipient is so poor that he or she is not paying any taxes, he or she gets a refund.

This program is popular on both Left and Right. It is very successful at both reducing poverty and encouraging work. The only major criticism of the program is that, since it hands money out to poor folks on the basis of tax returns, it encourages people to lie on their tax return (so as to get the money) and many people do so.

This book is a collection of raw social science on this subject. It gives you the history of the program. It gives you an economic analysis of it. It discusses the fraud problem.

All of this is very valuable, in substance. It is totally raw, unflitered social science, however. They do not expect any ordinary people to be reading this, so they make no concessions to ordinary English. You get multiple regression analysis, microeconomic theory and the whole enchilida. Definitely not a beach book. Not really a book at all. Is really a collection of technical articles on the subject, which are loosely related to each other. In short, as a book, it stinks, but the information in it is very valuable. Read it if you want technical details on the program. Otherwise, give it a miss.

Making Work Pay: The Earned Income Tax Credit And Its Impact On America's Families, edited by Bruce D. Meyer (Professor of Economics, Northwestern University) and Douglas Holtz-Eakin (Professor of Economics, Syracuse University) offers an impressive selection of scholarly essays by a number of distinguished and knowledgeable contributors discussing the history of the earned income tax credit, how it is used, its ramifications upon society and the tax structure, and more. Highly recommended for Economic Studies academic reference collections and supplemental reading lists, Making Work Pay offers a series of thoughtful presentation of learned and analytic viewpoints, and is a solid resource for anyone seeking to learn more about the fundamental nature and repercussions of tax credit policy.

Here, collected in an elegant volume, is the authoritative selection of Washington's thoughts and observations culled from his public and private correspondence. As we read his comments on subjects as diverse as government, foreign policy, religious freedom, friendship, character, and relations between the sexes, we find that his words are often as applicable to our own time as they were to his.
