I didn't intend to stand up to the IRS but had to due to circumstances beyond my control. Daily's book gives a comprehensive look at what constrains the IRS and what sort of leeway a taxpayer. What I found to be of the most value, though, was his simple explaination of complex circumstances. Daily breaks down various tax problems and solutions and suggests ways to prevent having the IRS resort to putting a lean on your home, etc.

I'd highly recommend Daily's book as it has the insider perspective that a taxpayer needs but the dose of reality to prevent a false sense of security when negotiating with the IRS. Daily provides perspective as to what will work in your favor and what you can do to prevent yourself from working against yourself.

"Stand Up To The IRS" (SUIRS) is an absolute, no-question, don't even think twice, must-have for any taxpayer's household financal tool drawer. Clearly written and presented in short, bite-sized chunks by a successful longtime tax attorney who has been through it all many times, SUIRS is an impressively inclusive text that can go a long way toward leveling the audit playing field for taxpayers -- if not outright tipping it in their favor. Loaded with sample forms, letters and where-to-find-it tables, this book earns its cover price in the Index alone. If the location of the answer to your question isn't in there, you're probably not asking it correctly. And if you ever do get audited, Chapter 16 ("The 25 Most Frequently Asked Questions") will probably do more to calm your nerves and help you rest than any sleeping pill will. Mom and dad never taught you this stuff when you were growing up, because they didn't know it. So be a good son or daughter and give them their own copy. Besides, it just might come in handy some day, as described in chapter 9 ("Family, Friends, Heirs and the IRS").

A friend of mine attended one of Deborah's Frozen Assets workshops at a homeschooling convention and told me it was really helpful to hear Deborah talk through the process in person. I decided to buy a copy of the audio workshop and I found out that my friend was right. The Frozen Assets book is great and I love the down-home family recipes (won't cook without it anymore), but listening to the author share tips that aren't even mentioned in the book and sharing her own personal stories and insights really helped me grasp the concepts and gave me the courage to venture out on this whole monthly cooking idea for myself. I've saved a ton of money and time in the process. I think it's definitely well-worth adding this tape to a collection of once-a-month cooking resources.

A concise and very readable book on incentive stock options and how to get the most out of them. Lots of practical information on what they are, the tax issues, ways to exercise them and more. I especially liked the discussion on using margin to do a 'cashless' exercise and then holding the stock for long term capital gains.

                Book Description

In the twentieth century, tax-exempt foundations have grown substantially, both in their financial importance and in the scope of their activities. This challenging book examines the economic, cultural and intellectual implications of tax-exempt organizations. How do various tax laws influence foundations and what types of ideas do foundations produce? How do the activities of foundations relate to the interests and intentions of their founders? Does the economic management of foundation assets serve the public good, or would such assets be better employed through the private sector?

Around the turn of the century, individuals who had amassed substantial wealth wanted to direct some of it toward activities that would further the public interest. Their individual motives may have varied. John D. Rockefeller was interested in deflecting public criticism by using his wealth to further the public interest. James B. Duke, who endowed Trinity College in North Carolina, wanted to enshrine his family name. How well do the foundations' activities match the intents of their founders? Writing Off Ideas examines these and related questions primarily by looking at specific examples as well as the overall impact of foundation practices economically and socially. Non-profit foundations have grown because contributions to them are tax-deductible. Federal estate taxes were established in 1916, and rose to as high as 25 percent (on estates over $10 million) during World War I. The top rate was increased to 70 percent (on estates over $50 million) in 1935. Beginning in 1942, the top rate was raised to 77 percent on estates over $10 million, where it remained for decades. The top rate is now 55 percent for estates over $3 million.

Does the tax law create organizations shielded from economic realities and true social needs, producing a self-indulgent, philanthropic subculture that often squanders resources, fosters questionable ideologies, and launches foolish, trendy crusades? What would be the impact of the flat tax, reduction or abolition of estate taxes, or proposals to change or mandate the amount given away each year? These issues are significant. A large and accelerating percentage of wealth is being placed into foundations for tax purposes, and the expenditure of such wealth through non-profit organizations may or may not be socially beneficial. Writing Off Ideas provides a comprehensive exploration of this vast sector of American Society. An Independent Institute Book

5 out of 5 stars Nice Examination of Moral Hazards Faced by Foundations.......2001-07-28

"Writing Off Ideas" is Randall Holcombe's examination of the role charitable foundations play in shaping public policy in a free society. In it, he explores issues like donor intent and whether institutional incentives exist to ensure that foundation board members are held accountable for their actions.

He begins by pointing out that the vast majority of charitable foundations in the twentieth century were established under very general mandates to promote the public interest. He claims this approach enables board members to address unique problems in society as they occur and prevents their current leadership from being constrained by the desires of their original donors. As foundations are funded entirely by earnings from initial bequests, he believes their board members are essentially free from external oversight and accountable to no one. Thus, he implies that the merits of many programs supported by foundations can be called into question.

In addition, he states that the tax code exacerbates this problem by encouraging wealthy individuals to make large bequests to foundations to avoid inheritance tax penalties. As a result, he claims far more foundations exist under the current tax code than would be necessary under a neutral code.

To illustrate the moral hazard inherent in this arrangement, he provides a revealing quote from former MacArthur trustee Rod MacArthur: "Foundations should be striving to do the kinds of things that the government cannot do. I repeat, cannot do: things that are not politically popular, things that are too risky, things that are just too far ahead to what the public will put up with..."

Predictably, Holcombe uses the legendary exploits of the Ford Foundation during the 1960s as examples of how some boards run amok. However, his criticisms are not restricted to the Left. Surprisingly, he attacks the Manhattan Institute for using foundation money to underwrite the efforts of Charles Murray in "Losing Ground." Although he does not question Murray's conclusions about the proper role of government in domestic welfare policy, he does criticize Murray for claiming that the availability of foundation funding was a motivating factor in his decision to write the book.

In criticizing Murray, he runs the risk of sounding like Elizabeth Drew and other advocates of campaign-finance reform. He walks a very fine line between claiming that individuals who receive tax-deductible funds to promote their views should be subjected to greater scrutiny than those who do not, and claiming that funding used to promote political views should only be distributed via democratic decree. However, as with other forms of political speech, he asserts that members of the public are already well aware of the bias inherent in foundation funding and stops well short of advocating limitations on foundation-sponsored research.

Despite these problems, he asserts that the public expects three things from foundation managers: that they do not use their assets for their own personal gain, that they carry out the mission established by their donors, and that their activities generally benefit members of the public. In his conclusion, he states that the current limitations imposed by Congress on foundation activities have forced their managers to comply with these expectations. Although he does not believe that all foundation activities actually serve the public interest, he recognizes that efforts by bureaucrats to further regulate foundations would have unintended consequences. Ultimately, accusations of political bias should not derail important contributions to the policy debate.

Overall, Holcombe does an excellent job of explaining why foundation trustees face strong incentives to promote radical political agendas that can be harmful to the public interest. He demonstrates an acute understanding of public choice economics when documenting the moral hazards faced by managers of foundations. Most importantly, he recognizes that efforts to stamp out the "bad ideas" produced by these managers would do more harm than good.

                  Book Description

"A brilliant book in this competitive market. . . . an excellent synthesis of the history of the United States from Theodore Roosevelt's succession to the Presidency in 1901 to Franklin D. Roosevelt's death in 1945 or, actually, the end of the war in the Pacific. . . . [It] reads well and has a compelling fascination."
--Francis M. Carroll, co-author of The Free and the Unfree

A lively tour of the United States in the first half of the twentieth century, America Ascendant traces the development of America's tremendous industrial power and its commercial deployment, at home and abroad. Emphasizing the contributions of those charismatic presidents who shaped the future of politics-- Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt--the book also covers pioneers such as Henry Ford and the Wright brothers, whose technological contributions transformed societies the world over.

The book investigates the phenomena that threatened America's ascendance--the Great Red Scare of 1917- 20 and the rout of organized labor, the Great Crash of 1929 and the searing depression years, and the apartheid policies that undermined American democratic ideals. Moreover, Sean Dennis Cashman sets the American story within the dramatic context of the rise and fall of political empires in Europe and Asia and two devastating world wars. Enriching the volume is an integrated account of the American cultural scene, replete with such figures as Ernest Hemingway, Frank Lloyd Wright, George Gershwin, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Charlie Chaplin, and D. W. Griffith.

Imaginatively conceived, America Ascendant once again reveals Sean Dennis Cashman's flair for bringing American history to life with all its triumphs, drama, and ambiguities.

3 out of 5 stars An insight into the roller coaster ride.......2005-09-15

This book contains a candid description of the experience of a manic episode and the social, career, family and financial devastation it can cause. I'm sure most bipolars will identify with Faye, and SOs of bipolars will get an insight into the illness that perhaps the rest of us don't always have the words to convey.

It was very engaging. I put aside the other 3 books I'm reading just to see how things turned out.

                  4 out of 5 stars A touching story.......2003-03-09

Faye has written a touching and uplifting story about her struggle with bipolar disorder. She appears to have been afflicted with a pretty severe variety of the disorder, perhaps Bipolar I would be the proper diagnosis. The writing isn't as good as in the finest mental illness memoirs, such as "An Unquiet Mind" or "Girl, Interrupted", but she is still able to tell her story vividly and honestly. The reader is likely to find himself cheering for her, hoping she can get her life back together. Anyone with bipolar disorder should read this book. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

5 out of 5 stars Just The Book I Have Been Searching For..........2001-11-13

I rate this book five stars! This well written and fascinating book is about the author's experience with mental illness. Her perspective helped me put into words so many feelings I had. I especially enjoyed the part where the author wrote from a psychotic viewpoint, which makes the book all the more unique.

This book would surely be of help to a bipolar or a relative of a mentally ill person.

                  2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-11-01

I read other reviews before purchasing this book, and had high expectations of Ms.Shannon's story. Once I began reading, however, I found her writing style to be extremely repetitive, with many sentences being paraphrased over and over again. This may be intentional, to reflect the confused state of mind during a stressful period in the author's life, but does not, in my opinion, add substance to the book or to the subject matter.

Having said this, I have to mention that I do empathise with her story, being a bipolar patient myself. I just expected that a published book would have a higher quality of written English on its pages. Contrary to other reviewers' opinions, I kept having to put the book down as I tired of the writing style.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT Book and Recommended for Consumers and Families.......2001-10-19

                  EXCELLENT book!

I am the webowner of Bipolar Disorder Sanctuary and I had a very difficult time putting this book down. Faye easily captures your interest and you want to know what happens next.

Faye openly discusses her life - before, after and during manic & depressive episodes. She reveals the tremendous negative impact the BP has had on her life, and those around her. This was really important for me to read as I have the bipolar disorder myself and I felt much less alone when I read her story. I related so much to what she experienced.

I really believe that this book will comfort many and help educate those with the disorder and for the families as well. It is a first class read.

4 out of 5 stars Fairly comprehensive biography of Bowie........2000-09-15

Christopher Sandford has done an admirable job of writing a biography on one of rock's more elusive icons, David Bowie. Having read most of the other biographies on Bowie in and out of print, I'd have to rank this one second best next to Peter Gillman's "Alias David Bowie." Gillman's biography has better photos and a superior in-depth account of Bowie's youth, but Sandford's is more up-to-date.

In "Loving the Alien," Sandford discusses Bowie's rumored schizophrenia, a trait he apparently inherited from his mother's side. (Previous biographers have argued that if this is a fact, it serves to explain the many stage-personas Bowie adopted during the '70's: Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Thin White Duke, etc. Curiously enough, Sandford seems uninterested in this theory.) Bowie's half-brother, Terry Burns, clearly suffered from the mental illness, which led him to take his own life in 1985. The song "Width of a Circle" is supposed to be about Bowie's own battles with schizophrenia (or possibly Burns', depending on which biography you read). Whether or not it ever seriously affected him, Bowie seems to have conquered it by his mid-30's.

Bowie also befriended many other rock stars and celebrities during the '70's. At one time, he was even friends with Elizabeth Taylor and Oona Chaplin (the latter's family even falsely predicted that Bowie would marry her).

Sandford's biography is probably the most well-written one yet on Bowie, as well as the most current. Strongly recommended for Bowie fans wishing to know more about the man.

5 out of 5 stars Better detailed and explained than any of the rest!.......2000-07-12

When I bought this book, I figured I knew just about everything I needed to know about David Bowie. I knew all of his albums, his wives, favorite albums, all about his fellow musical friends (Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, etc.), the movie he has starred in, and so on. As a matter of fact, I came close to not buying the book at all. But boy am I glad I did. Loving The Alien is the by far the most down to the earth, well explained, and best researched Bowie biography out there today. I'm surprised that the author, Christopher Sanford was able to convince William Burroughs to talk to him. What sets this biography apart from the rest is that it presents the information in a factual matter but also with a twist of Sanford's opinion mixed in. I found the reading very interesting and I finally realized that I knew hardly anything about the exciting and unique David Bowie.

5 out of 5 stars This book is the best biography of David Bowie ever........1999-07-01

I have read a lot about David Bowie, because I'm a huge fan, and I believe that this is the best biography written about him. It goes into such detail, you can't believe that it's all true. I actually ended up highlighting parts that were so interesting, I would reffer to in conversations. I highly recommend this book. It will change anyone's life.

                                    Book Description

Anyone wondering what sort of experience prepares one for a future as an engineer may be surprised to learn that it includes delivering newspapers. But as Henry Petroski recounts his youth in 1950s Queens, New York–a borough of handball games and inexplicably numbered streets–he winningly shows how his after-school job amounted to a prep course in practical engineering.

Petroksi’s paper was The Long Island Press, whose headlines ran to COP SAVES OLD WOMAN FROM THUG and DiMAG SAYS BUMS CAN’T WIN SERIES. Folding it into a tube suitable for throwing was an exercise in post-Euclidean geometry. Maintaining a Schwinn revealed volumes about mechanics. Reading Paperboy, we also learn about the hazing rituals of its namesakes, the aesthetics of kitchen appliances, and the delicate art of penny-pitching. With gratifying reflections on these and other lessons of a bygone era–lessons about diligence, labor, and community-mindedness– Paperboy is a piece of Americana to cherish and reread.

This is a great compilation of memories for anyone who grew up in Cambria Heights in the 1950s/1960s. From the stores on Linden Boulevard to the nuns at Sacred Heart School, to the kids in the neighborhood it will bring back memories of a time and place once enjoyed and long forgotten.

Not only an interesting recalling the 50's, but full of thought provoking insights. They creep in on the story and all of a sudden you realize you have read something deeper than throwing a paper across a lawn.

"Paperboy", by Henry Petroski is another one of his intelligent, friendly, winning books.Petroski, of "The Pencil", and "The Evolution of Useful Things,"wrote about his family's move from the city to the suburbs in the 1950s.However, there's more- how he had difficulty finding a place in a school that would provide him with the challenge and stimulation he needed, the comfort of family, the joy of friendship, and the challenges of the physical world.Petroski is one of the great scientist=writers, like Lewis Thomas, Primo Levi, and Stephen Jay Gould. However, Petroski is a mapper of the world of bridges, buildings, and the one who ddeply notices pencils, paperclips. and how to fold a newspaper. This is a good book, and would be a great book for many men- Father's day, birthdays, high school graduations--And, a great gift for women, too
