Excellent to have if you have a disagreement with the gov.......2003-11-02
I'd highly recommend Daily's book as it has the insider perspective that a taxpayer needs but the dose of reality to prevent a false sense of security when negotiating with the IRS. Daily provides perspective as to what will work in your favor and what you can do to prevent yourself from working against yourself.
A must-have for anyone who doesn't still live at home........1999-11-19

Writing Off Ideas: Taxation, Philanthropy, and America's Non-Profit Foundations
Randall Holcombe , and Randall G. Holcombe Manufacturer: Transaction Publishers ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0765806800 |
Book Description
In the twentieth century, tax-exempt foundations have grown substantially, both in their financial importance and in the scope of their activities. This challenging book examines the economic, cultural and intellectual implications of tax-exempt organizations. How do various tax laws influence foundations and what types of ideas do foundations produce? How do the activities of foundations relate to the interests and intentions of their founders? Does the economic management of foundation assets serve the public good, or would such assets be better employed through the private sector?Around the turn of the century, individuals who had amassed substantial wealth wanted to direct some of it toward activities that would further the public interest. Their individual motives may have varied. John D. Rockefeller was interested in deflecting public criticism by using his wealth to further the public interest. James B. Duke, who endowed Trinity College in North Carolina, wanted to enshrine his family name. How well do the foundations' activities match the intents of their founders? Writing Off Ideas examines these and related questions primarily by looking at specific examples as well as the overall impact of foundation practices economically and socially. Non-profit foundations have grown because contributions to them are tax-deductible. Federal estate taxes were established in 1916, and rose to as high as 25 percent (on estates over $10 million) during World War I. The top rate was increased to 70 percent (on estates over $50 million) in 1935. Beginning in 1942, the top rate was raised to 77 percent on estates over $10 million, where it remained for decades. The top rate is now 55 percent for estates over $3 million.
Does the tax law create organizations shielded from economic realities and true social needs, producing a self-indulgent, philanthropic subculture that often squanders resources, fosters questionable ideologies, and launches foolish, trendy crusades? What would be the impact of the flat tax, reduction or abolition of estate taxes, or proposals to change or mandate the amount given away each year? These issues are significant. A large and accelerating percentage of wealth is being placed into foundations for tax purposes, and the expenditure of such wealth through non-profit organizations may or may not be socially beneficial. Writing Off Ideas provides a comprehensive exploration of this vast sector of American Society. An Independent Institute Book

Nice Examination of Moral Hazards Faced by Foundations.......2001-07-28
He begins by pointing out that the vast majority of charitable foundations in the twentieth century were established under very general mandates to promote the public interest. He claims this approach enables board members to address unique problems in society as they occur and prevents their current leadership from being constrained by the desires of their original donors. As foundations are funded entirely by earnings from initial bequests, he believes their board members are essentially free from external oversight and accountable to no one. Thus, he implies that the merits of many programs supported by foundations can be called into question.
In addition, he states that the tax code exacerbates this problem by encouraging wealthy individuals to make large bequests to foundations to avoid inheritance tax penalties. As a result, he claims far more foundations exist under the current tax code than would be necessary under a neutral code.
To illustrate the moral hazard inherent in this arrangement, he provides a revealing quote from former MacArthur trustee Rod MacArthur: "Foundations should be striving to do the kinds of things that the government cannot do. I repeat, cannot do: things that are not politically popular, things that are too risky, things that are just too far ahead to what the public will put up with..."
Predictably, Holcombe uses the legendary exploits of the Ford Foundation during the 1960s as examples of how some boards run amok. However, his criticisms are not restricted to the Left. Surprisingly, he attacks the Manhattan Institute for using foundation money to underwrite the efforts of Charles Murray in "Losing Ground." Although he does not question Murray's conclusions about the proper role of government in domestic welfare policy, he does criticize Murray for claiming that the availability of foundation funding was a motivating factor in his decision to write the book.
In criticizing Murray, he runs the risk of sounding like Elizabeth Drew and other advocates of campaign-finance reform. He walks a very fine line between claiming that individuals who receive tax-deductible funds to promote their views should be subjected to greater scrutiny than those who do not, and claiming that funding used to promote political views should only be distributed via democratic decree. However, as with other forms of political speech, he asserts that members of the public are already well aware of the bias inherent in foundation funding and stops well short of advocating limitations on foundation-sponsored research.
Despite these problems, he asserts that the public expects three things from foundation managers: that they do not use their assets for their own personal gain, that they carry out the mission established by their donors, and that their activities generally benefit members of the public. In his conclusion, he states that the current limitations imposed by Congress on foundation activities have forced their managers to comply with these expectations. Although he does not believe that all foundation activities actually serve the public interest, he recognizes that efforts by bureaucrats to further regulate foundations would have unintended consequences. Ultimately, accusations of political bias should not derail important contributions to the policy debate.
Overall, Holcombe does an excellent job of explaining why foundation trustees face strong incentives to promote radical political agendas that can be harmful to the public interest. He demonstrates an acute understanding of public choice economics when documenting the moral hazards faced by managers of foundations. Most importantly, he recognizes that efforts to stamp out the "bad ideas" produced by these managers would do more harm than good.

America Ascendant: From Theodore Roosevelt to FDR in the Century of American Power, 1901-1945
Sean Cashman Manufacturer: NYU Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0814715664 Release Date: 1998-09-01 |
Book Description
"A brilliant book in this competitive market. . . . an excellent synthesis of the history of the United States from Theodore Roosevelt's succession to the Presidency in 1901 to Franklin D. Roosevelt's death in 1945 or, actually, the end of the war in the Pacific. . . . [It] reads well and has a compelling fascination."
--Francis M. Carroll, co-author of The Free and the Unfree
A lively tour of the United States in the first half of the twentieth century, America Ascendant traces the development of America's tremendous industrial power and its commercial deployment, at home and abroad. Emphasizing the contributions of those charismatic presidents who shaped the future of politics-- Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt--the book also covers pioneers such as Henry Ford and the Wright brothers, whose technological contributions transformed societies the world over.
The book investigates the phenomena that threatened America's ascendance--the Great Red Scare of 1917- 20 and the rout of organized labor, the Great Crash of 1929 and the searing depression years, and the apartheid policies that undermined American democratic ideals. Moreover, Sean Dennis Cashman sets the American story within the dramatic context of the rise and fall of political empires in Europe and Asia and two devastating world wars. Enriching the volume is an integrated account of the American cultural scene, replete with such figures as Ernest Hemingway, Frank Lloyd Wright, George Gershwin, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Charlie Chaplin, and D. W. Griffith.
Imaginatively conceived, America Ascendant once again reveals Sean Dennis Cashman's flair for bringing American history to life with all its triumphs, drama, and ambiguities.

Just The Book I Have Been Searching For..........2001-11-13
This book would surely be of help to a bipolar or a relative of a mentally ill person.
Disappointing.......2001-11-01
Having said this, I have to mention that I do empathise with her story, being a bipolar patient myself. I just expected that a published book would have a higher quality of written English on its pages. Contrary to other reviewers' opinions, I kept having to put the book down as I tired of the writing style.
EXCELLENT Book and Recommended for Consumers and Families.......2001-10-19
I am the webowner of Bipolar Disorder Sanctuary and I had a very difficult time putting this book down. Faye easily captures your interest and you want to know what happens next.
Faye openly discusses her life - before, after and during manic & depressive episodes. She reveals the tremendous negative impact the BP has had on her life, and those around her. This was really important for me to read as I have the bipolar disorder myself and I felt much less alone when I read her story. I related so much to what she experienced.
I really believe that this book will comfort many and help educate those with the disorder and for the families as well. It is a first class read.

Customer Reviews:
Fairly comprehensive biography of Bowie........2000-09-15
In "Loving the Alien," Sandford discusses Bowie's rumored schizophrenia, a trait he apparently inherited from his mother's side. (Previous biographers have argued that if this is a fact, it serves to explain the many stage-personas Bowie adopted during the '70's: Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Thin White Duke, etc. Curiously enough, Sandford seems uninterested in this theory.) Bowie's half-brother, Terry Burns, clearly suffered from the mental illness, which led him to take his own life in 1985. The song "Width of a Circle" is supposed to be about Bowie's own battles with schizophrenia (or possibly Burns', depending on which biography you read). Whether or not it ever seriously affected him, Bowie seems to have conquered it by his mid-30's.
Bowie also befriended many other rock stars and celebrities during the '70's. At one time, he was even friends with Elizabeth Taylor and Oona Chaplin (the latter's family even falsely predicted that Bowie would marry her).
Sandford's biography is probably the most well-written one yet on Bowie, as well as the most current. Strongly recommended for Bowie fans wishing to know more about the man.
