    Product Description

In recent decades, industrial companies have invested much time and money in enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and in automation of the process control layer. In our quest to reap the rewards of all these investments, the gap between business automation and process automation is becoming painfully obvious. ERP systems are only valuable if you supply them with current data, and these data originate largely from the process control layer. When integrating these systems, both IT departments and engineering departments must confront the high degree of heterogeneity found in technology, metadata, programming languages, user interfaces, and more. Good communication with the system's end user is essential as several departments are usually involved, such as production, maintenance, the lab, and the office. Try speaking the same language then! Against this backdrop, ISA decided in the 1990s to develop the ISA-95 standard for integrating enterprise and control systems in order to reduce the risks, costs, and errors that go hand in hand with implementing manufacturing control systems and integrating them with ERP systems. This handy resource explains how to apply ISA-95 in manufacturing enterprise systems (MES) and vertical integration projects, as well as reveals the most important ISA-95 models and terminology. It is ideal for those just starting out who need to get up to speed on ISA-95's background information but also for those who have some practical experience with ISA-95 and require additional support in carrying out analyses to determine a specific company s MES strategy and to define user requirements. If you develop MES functionality or realize interfaces based on ISA-95, then this guide will help you understand and apply the ISA-95 object models. Most important, the guide explains how to integrate ERP and MES systems using ISA-95. It places ISA-95 in the broader context of modern information exchange technologies and thus offers a complete picture for

    Book Description

Computer systems have become an integral part of most companies. The newest of these is Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), a technology that provides on-line application software that companies rely on to manage their manufacturing processes. Applying Manufacturing Execution Systems is the book for everyone who has the responsibility of improving their company's manufacturing results. It shows how the current conditions on the plant floor can be optimized to improve production output using an integrated MES. Applying Manufacturing Execution Systems shows how MES benefits all types of manufacturing from discrete item production to process flow production. The concepts discussed are applicable in all production facilities where a number of variables, whether simple or complex, need to be considered in order to optimize production by effectively using the available resources of people, inventory, and equipment. The book emphasizes the application of MES in the real world of manufacturing that includes:

In the revised and updated edition of Lean Thinking: Banish Waste and Create Wealth in Your Corporation, authors James P. Womack and Daniel T. Jones provide a thoughtful expansion upon their value-based business system based on the Toyota model. Along the way they update their action plan in light of new research and the increasing globalization of manufacturing, and they revisit some of their key case studies (most of which still derive, however, from the automotive, aerospace, and other manufacturing industries).

The core of the lean model remains the same in the new edition. All businesses must define the "value" that they produce as the product that best suits customer needs. The leaders must then identify and clarify the "value stream," the nexus of actions to bring the product through problems solving, information management, and physical transformation tasks. Next, "lean enterprise" lines up suppliers with this value stream. "Flow" traces the product across departments. "Pull" then activates the flow as the business re-orients towards the pull of the customer's needs. Finally, with the company reengineered towards its core value in a flow process, the business re-orients towards "perfection," rooting out all the remaining muda (Japanese for "waste") in the system.

Despite the authors' claims to "actionable principles for creating lasting value in any business during any business conditions," the lean model is not demonstrated with broad applications in the service or retail industries. But those manager's whose needs resonate with those described in the Lean Thinking case studies will find a host of practical guidelines for streamlining their processes and achieving manufacturing efficiencies. --Patrick O'Kelley

    Book Description

Expanded, updated, and more relevant than ever, this bestselling business classic by two internationally renowned management analysts describes a business system for the twenty-first century that supersedes the mass production system of Ford, the financial control system of Sloan, and the strategic system of Welch and GE. It is based on the Toyota (lean) model, which combines operational excellence with value-based strategies to produce steady growth through a wide range of economic conditions.

In contrast with the crash-and-burn performance of companies trumpeted by business gurus in the 1990s, the firms profiled in Lean Thinking -- from tiny Lantech to midsized Wiremold to niche producer Porsche to gigantic Pratt & Whitney -- have kept on keeping on, largely unnoticed, along a steady upward path through the market turbulence and crushed dreams of the early twenty-first century. Meanwhile, the leader in lean thinking -- Toyota -- has set its sights on leadership of the global motor vehicle industry in this decade.

Instead of constantly reinventing business models, lean thinkers go back to basics by asking what the customer really perceives as value. (It's often not at all what existing organizations and assets would suggest.) The next step is to line up value-creating activities for a specific product along a value stream while eliminating activities (usually the majority) that don't add value. Then the lean thinker creates a flow condition in which the design and the product advance smoothly and rapidly at the pull of the customer (rather than the push of the producer). Finally, as flow and pull are implemented, the lean thinker speeds up the cycle of improvement in pursuit of perfection. The first part of this book describes each of these concepts and makes them come alive with striking examples.

Lean Thinking clearly demonstrates that these simple ideas can breathe new life into any company in any industry in any country. But most managers need guidance on how to make the lean leap in their firm. Part II provides a step-by-step action plan, based on in-depth studies of more than fifty lean companies in a wide range of industries across the world.

Even those readers who believe they have embraced lean thinking will discover in Part III that another dramatic leap is possible by creating an extended lean enterprise for each of their product families that tightly links value-creating activities from raw materials to customer.

In Part IV, an epilogue to the original edition, the story of lean thinking is brought up-to-date with an enhanced action plan based on the experiences of a range of lean firms since the original publication of Lean Thinking.

Lean Thinking does not provide a new management "program" for the one-minute manager. Instead, it offers a new method of thinking, of being, and, above all, of doing for the serious long-term manager -- a method that is changing the world.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book but very dull........2007-08-27

I found this book to be interesting, but I hard trouble finishing it because the writing was so boring. Despite the dullness the book did get me thinking of product in a different way.

5 out of 5 stars Womack and Jones, very engaging........2007-08-26

Lean Thinking- A very well written account of a long study of the theory of customer driven value thinking. The elimination of waste in accomplishing customer driven trade is the main goal of this theory. The book has been tuned over a series of revisions, so it is well polished. While I am no expert on the topic, I can at least attest to the fact that the volume is well written and referenced. Their views are spread over a period of many years, giving them the benefit of tracking case study performance over the long term. Companies both large and small have been studied and tracked to determine the benefits of these theories.

4 out of 5 stars Worth Every Penny.......2007-07-30

A most readable book on an important subject of productivity. The comment on outsourcing is insightful and the emphasis on human element is so crucial. Productivity is not all about bigger and better machines but about management and employee been willing to take risks to think out of a box. Mr. Womack has made a significant contribution to the on-going dicussion of productivity in a globalized world.

5 out of 5 stars My husband loved it.......2007-04-10

My husband loved this book so much that this was actually purchased as a gift for another man in his office.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book with Detailed Lean Conversion Techniques .......2007-02-01

This book provides many case studies of companies outside of the auto industry that converted to lean production. It details the personnel changes they had to make, changes in factory layout, differences in the supply chain and much more. Where "The Machine that Changed the World" was a primer to lean production, "Lean Thinking" is more of a how-to book. Together, they make a great pair and provide a fairly in-depth view of the subject. As in, "The Machine that Changed the World", there is plenty of hard data to back up the claims that these companies improved after switching to lean thinking.

I am a college student majoring in mechanical engineering and read this book and "The Machine that Changed the World" to get a broad understanding of lean production. The two books did just that and even gave me many ideas on how to convert a student organization I am involved with (SAE) to more of a lean organization. As much as possible anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Finest Authentic Mexican Cooking Book written.......2006-09-30

I have never written a review of a cookbook, but I just received a copy of this excellent book. I get many cookbooks as gifts- primarily from my kids. This is the best cookbook I have ever received. I have been fortunate to have eaten at Dona Tomas in Oakland which is one of the many reasons I was interested in this book. Another aspect is the excellent review the book received in the LA TImes.

This is not the typical burrito and taco cookbook. The book covers the finer types of good tasting Mexican food for all meals of the day. There are no greasy or bland recipes in this book. This book brings tasty flavorful Mexican cooking to a really high level. This is the book to get if you like flavors!

The first thing that stood out for me is that, while lots of other cookbooks cover extremely complicated recipes that require a great deal of time to prepare, the vast majority of the recipes are quite simple to prepare, because they capitalize on the texture, and the balance of flavors in the ingrediants.

I finally found out the key to a simple item - "Toasted Pumpkin Seeds" and the different types of sauces, such as "Poblano Cream", to add to main dishes. Each recipe really is a piece unto itself.

Next one up for me this weekend is "Callos Con Calabaza"(sea scallops with butternut squash, chilies, and onions).

            This is an excellent book!

From discussions over early morning coffee, while riding on a cattle drive and around campfires in the high San Juan Mountains, Wendy learns more about how value is created for Shareowners than she learned in 16 years as an investment banker. She learns the three factors that cause stock prices to change. She learns who controls each of the three factors, and she learns how to judge if the CEO and CFO are creating Shareowner Value. ... She even learns what Shareowner Value is! ... While listening to ideas that will make her a better investor and manager, she also learns that if these same ideas were applied by the majority of companies, they would cause a surge in productivity and economic value which would rival the personal computer, the Internet and the Quality Process combined. At the end of the week, as Wendy drove away from the ranch, she felt refreshed and energized with new ideas to help her and others to become 'Richer Shareowners'. But, she also left the ranch with new friends and with a new perspective on the important things in life!

Rich Shareowner, Poor Shareowner!: Common Sense For Investors And Managers! by Will Marshall is a basic shareholder money matters guide that presents its core principles in very easy-to-understand format of anecdotes and vignettes. Individual chapters cogently address the definition of shareowner value, determining the 'cost of capital', how acquisitions can actually erode shareholder value, and much, much more. An excellent introduction to the conflicting, varied, and sometimes financially perilous world of the share market, Rich Shareowner, Poor Shareowner! is very strongly recommended reading for anyone who is investing in today's volatile stock market.

              5 out of 5 stars Main Course.......2002-10-23

Business books usually present the same level of satisfaction to the reader as a serving of steamed broccoli - fulfilling and valuable though less enticing than the main course. But Marshall's book is different. Rich Shareowner, Poor Shareowner! presents important and valuable instruction on business valuation and investment as part of an enjoyable read. Marshall weaves his business issues around a gentle story filled with lively dialogue among interesting characters in charming settings. Lead by a sage cowboy, the reader is guided through complex concepts at a comfortable pace, fed in bite-size pieces. The result is an effective combination of instruction and entertainment that should be the goal of all educators and authors. This book teaches; it is the main course.

He has taken a difficult topic and made it user friendly by building a story around the financial information. Will's common sense approach to creating value for the shareowner is something every company should apply.

                    Book Description

Although estate and gift taxes raise a small fraction of federal revenues, they have become sources of increasing political controversy. This book is designed to inform the current policy debate and build a conceptual basis for future scholarship. The book contains eleven original studies of estate and gift taxes, along with discussants' comments. The essays provide background and historical information; analyze the optimal taxation of estates and gifts; examine the effects of the tax on charitable contributions, saving behavior, the distribution and level of wealth, tax avoidance and tax evasion; and explore the effects of alternatives to estate taxation.

Contributors include Louis Kaplow (Harvard Law School), Barry Johnson, Jacob M. Mikow, Martha Britton Eller, and Chih-Chin Ho (Internal Revenue Service), Richard Schmalbeck (Duke University Law School), John Laitner (University of Michigan), James Poterba (MIT), Scott Weisbenner and Maria Perozek (Federal Reserve System), David Joulfaian (U.S. Treasury Department), Wojciech Kopczuk (University of Michigan), and Jonathan Feinstein (Yale University School of Management).

5 out of 5 stars A heartwarming, funny, moving book.......2001-08-12

This was a very heartwarming story. Reading this book gave me insight to Denise. It's truly amazing everything her and Neil went through to adopt David. I thought it would be an "OK" book, but I was wrong. It was fantastic. I couldn't put it down. I reccomend this book for everyone, as everyone will find something in it to relate too.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books.......2000-10-02

I think this is one of the best books I have ever read. The author does a great job of taking you into her world. This is a must read for anyone with a disability who has ever been told they cannot do something. Also a must read for those without disabilities to see that the abilities of people with disabilities are limitless. I look forward to future books by this talented author.

5 out of 5 stars Required Reading for families of children with disabilities.......1999-05-17

Denise made me both laugh and cry - somethimes at the same time. This is a WONDERFUL book about determination, ingenuity and grit all combined with a non-stop sense of humor. Denise shows us how it is possible for people with severe disabilities to thrive dispite society's limiting attitudes. I loved the book.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all new mothers.......1999-04-26

This book is a touching look at motherhood and all of its challenges. As a first time mother, I related to the same feelings of inadequacy, doubt, hope and elation that Denise so poignantly describes. My hat goes off to the Jacobsons who share their aspirations and who serve as an inspiration for all parents and parents to be whether they are disabled or not.

5 out of 5 stars Required reading for all adoptive parents........1999-04-20

The Question of David should be required reading for all adoptive and prospective adoptive parents. Their disabilities notwithstanding, the Jacobsons took on a huge responsibility with unlimited risk by adopting a child thought to have disabilities of his own. I laughed and cried and ached all through the story. As an adoptive parent of a child with ADHD, I found Denise's struggle with day-to-day issues an inspiration. How does she do it? Cheers to the Jacobson's and to David!
