1 out of 5 stars not good seller.......2005-10-01

I placed the order the book, but unfortunately, the text book was wrong one. Although I tried to contact this seller to return the book and have it refund as soon as I received the book, nobody responded to me. Eventually, I still keep this book and did not get refund. I'm afraid that this seller is not so good as everyone might tihnk when it comes to trouble shooting.

                Book Description

I have the great good fortune to do a job that I love. I get to sit ringside, see the finest in sports entertainment at the best venues in the world, and be the "voice" for World Wrestling Entertainment. And best of all, they pay me for the privilege. However, when the lights go out and the show is over, that's when it turns into adventures in dining.

I spend fifty weeks a year on the road, and I can tell you that there are a lot of great places to eat in this country. I can also tell you that the best way to enjoy the cuisines at many of the places that you pass by on the highway is to keep on driving. I'm sure that's why as the miles pile on and the years roll by, I remember with fondness the meals that came out of my mother's kitchen.

Here are some of my favorite recipes. Recipes that are tried-and-true Oklahoma cooking. Many have been in my family for years. Since I can't have all of you over to my place, I've included some of my lovely wife Jan's own recipes. Not to be outdone, there are barbecue recipes that I have perfected through the years. And, with a good meal, you have to have a good story, so here's just some of the many stories that I haven't had a chance to share with you before, going back to my early days in the business.

Some of the recipes are healthy, some are a good way to get quick sick. If it were just J.R. and his recipes and food pics, okay, but no, on the cover is a picture of two famous women who help glorify violence and who act lascivious in front of the world and on the cover. This book glorifies the WWE, and the WWE glorifies violence and sensuality. It's also an insult to women. Anyone claiming to be a Christian, do not support this book, don't be a hypocrite, "Be perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect." - Jesus.

This book is written by a man you all know as Good Ol' J.R, announcer to WWE Raw next to Jerry "The King" Lawler. Jim Ross is one of the best, if not the best, announcer in history, not to mention a hell of a good cook.

This man has spent thirty years in the business that is Professional Wrestling, with time in NWA, WCW and WWF and after all that time on the road, he has decided to sit his Oklahoma native behind down and let the rest of us benefit from his experience, from Babecue to Chilli, this book it the ultimate for lovers of cuisine, humor and wrasslin'. Enjoy, I know I did.

Our brains may not be wired for successful investing. Greed, fear, pride, and shame make for plenty of irrational behavior on Wall Street, little of it profitable. Investors fall victim to a variety of mild mental disorders that are diagnosed in this insightful book by John W. Schott, who is both a professional money manager and a practicing psychoanalyst on the faculty of Harvard Medical School. He shows how to become a more confident investor who is able to guard against the whipsaw emotions that can obscure wisdom. Schott also offers sensible investment advice and even publishes his own core portfolio.

5 out of 5 stars Good explanation of psychological forces behind investing decisions.......2006-05-24

Good explanation of psychological forces behind investing decisions. Helped me not the least due to explaining that many of my feelings during the bear market are quite normal and most
people go through them. The book also recommends, like most other great investors do, to always try and have a fair value valuation before buying a stock so your fear can be divorced from the market gyrations. As the book aptly says, the market is a manic-depressive and should probably be put on the couch itself. The book may also sound simplistic to some readers but I think there's a lot of powerful stuff here, simplest ideas can sometimes be the most powerful. I also identified with the author in that have a passion for investing while having another profession full-time.

1 out of 5 stars Long on theory, short on everything else.......2006-02-04

While the author may have had good intentions, this book was a big dud.

Often conflicting studies and data were cited.

Writer is an academic with no real world investing experience, track record or credentials.

                  4 out of 5 stars Understanding Investing.......2002-12-11

Mind Over Money provides helpful information to any investor, no matter how experienced. It explains how to control emotions such as greed and fear in order to be most successful with your investing. Schott offers beneficial advice on how to develop a strategy and how to set expectations for your stocks so that you will guarantee a long-term profit in the market. He explains different investment possibilities such as value and growth stocks or bonds and what types are more or less risky than others. He also tells how to evaluate and research them and how they should be put into your own portfolio. His insight into the reasons people lose a lot of money help you to understand what it takes to avoid loss and encourage profit. As both an experienced investor and knowledgable psychologist, Schott analyses and guides each kind of emotion a person experiences through investing money. He gives you the confidence to control your emotions and your money and to be sure of your decisions. In letting you know how to tell when to buy and when to sell, he gives the assurance needed to make sound choices. Overall, this book will put you ahead of the game in your chances of excelling in the stock market.

5 out of 5 stars A novel approach to personal investment counseling.......1998-11-14

I bought this book after reading the following review in Publishers Weekly, and agree with it completely: "Schott here brings together two concurrent careers -- as a financial manager and a Harvard Medical School psychiatrist -- lending a novel and significant dimension to personal investment counseling. Writing with freelancer Arbeiter, he outlines programs of diversification, share value appraisal, by-and-sell timing and the like to suit the psychological needs of various types of investors: timid, indecisive, impulsive, guilt-ridden, safety-minded, overconfident or simply the innate gambler. "Handling greed in a bull market and fear in a bear market" is an investor's prime need, according to the authors, who suggest specific standards for selling, while maintaining that the "best way to make money is to buy good companies and stick with them." Offering the reader-investor emotional self-discovery, this is also a particularly accessible and penetrating analysis of all investment vehicles, enlivened by case histories, anecdotes and quotes from the likes of Warren Buffet, along with portfolio listings of stocks and bonds chosen especially for each emotional type."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent advice for the novice or seasoned investor.......1998-10-28

I was fascinated by the fact that the author of this book has a first career as a psychiatrist and thought that it would be an interesting read, to see why people make investment mistakes. I was certainly satisfied in that respect. The book is replete with stories of Dr. Schott's client's and patient's investment mistakes (often quite funny) and successes. Little did I know, this book would also provide great advice for an interested but novice investor. Dr. Schott divulges his own portfolio and explains exactly what percentage of your own money should be invested in what stocks, or mutual funds depending on your goals. And no wonder! The next day, I saw Dr. Schott on C-Span. He had predicted the day's market drop. And I also opened Money magazine in which he was featured! All in all, the best book I've read this fall! I'm sure it will pay for itself many times over!!

                  Book Description

Managers often ask why their firm should have an ethics program, especially if no one has complained about unethical behavior. The pursuit of business ethics can cost money, they say. It can lose sales to less scrupulous competitors and can drain management time and energy. But as Harvard business professor Francis Aguilar points out, ethics scandals (such as over Beech-Nut's erzatz "apple juice" or Sears's padded car repair bills) can severely damage a firm, with punishing legal penalties, bad publicity, and irreparably injured customer relations. Equally important if less obvious, unethical behavior can undermine a firm's organizational spirit. On the other hand, Aguilar argues, in a well run firm, ethical programs can actually enhance corporate performance, strengthening the company at every level and supercharging employee risk taking and innovation. In Managing Corporate Ethics, Aguilar shows managers how to create ethical programs within their organizations that not only discourage large-scale wrongdoing, but can contribute substantially to the achievement of corporate excellence. Aguilar's program is down-to-earth and comprehensive, and based on his extensive research on highly successful, ethical companies, both large and small. He recommends action on three fronts: first, get senior management to provide effective ethical leadership; second, set up an ethics program that promotes concern for the interests of people affected by the firm's operations and that provides safeguards against corrupting business pressures; and third, staff the company with ethical people and surround the organization with ethical advisors (including legal, financial, accounting, tax, and marketing consultants). To illuminate this three-step program, Aguilar incorporates the lessons learned in his in-depth study of ten prominent firms with proven successful ethics programs--among them Hewlett-Packard, Johnson and Johnson, Nucor Steel, Cray Research, ServiceMaster, and Texas Instruments. He examines Lincoln Electric's attention to compensation and job security to ensure quality products and to reduce the pressure or temptation to act unethically. He shows how General Mills, while pushing product line managers to compete aggressively, uses corporate staff units to guard against illegal or unacceptable claims (testing cake recipes, for example, to see if a product's quality fails under the less-than-perfect conditions of a normal kitchen). And he details how Armstrong World Industries uses pep talks, inspirational stories, role models, and ready access to management to promote ethical standards among employees. Throughout, Aguilar demonstrates convincingly that an ethical program pays dividends: that employees, suppliers, customers, and the community at large know when they are being treated in a positive and constructive manner, and are likely to respond in kind. Packed with real life examples of successful (and failed) ethical programs, Managing Corporate Ethics is a valuable roadmap to an often overlooked source of business success.

5 out of 5 stars Very well Written.......2001-08-21

All the Clapton Blues classic are included, very well written and easy to understand, but remember, Eric Clapton is not for beginners, for those who know what they are doing - becareful - you won't be able to stop :) at least I can't. Oh, yea, one more thing, for those who just started with the guitar and are dying to play some Eric Clapton, I strongly recommend buying the 'unplugged' book because he plays there with only one guitar, and it is easier to figure out. But for experts who are playing with friends this book is an excellent choice.

5 out of 5 stars Professional Clapton Playing.......2000-05-03

It has always been said around my place that if you can play a full set of layla (including the derek and the dominos segment) straight, you're pretty damn good guitarist. Truth is, though, until I got this book, I couldn't find a true transcription of the original Layla. So here you have it. The beautiful 22 pages of joy. Of course, Layla isn't the only piece of food on the shiny plate. Besides such classics as "Knockin on Heaven's Door", "Cocaine", and "Alberta", LIFE IN THE BLUES offers an extremely professional look at all of Claptons hits. If I have any complaint, it is exactly that. Nearly all of the songs included are hits. But then agian, this is one of the only books that actually has all of these hits in Tablature form, not to mention Tabs for all of the guitars that are playing, in a professional manner. The book also includes a nice little discography, and a 'concise', as they call it, biography. Of course the biography is quick and short, with nothing but facts included. It's about 6 pages long. Overall, if you are serious about playing Clapton, this should deffinetly be a book to get. It's also great for keyboard (and includes lyrics).

In a lifetime of exploration, writing, and passionate political activism, John Muir made himself America's most eloquent spokesman for the mystery and majesty of the wilderness, a master of natural description who evoked and celebrated with unique power and intimacy the untrammeled landscapes of Alaska and the American West.

This Autobiography of John Muir was a look at the life of an amazing man. He was the type of writer that could take you to the place where he was living and make you feel like you were right there with him. His childhood experiences in Scotland and the farm life of Wisconsin formed the basis for how he viewed and related to the rest of his life and those around him. He was a world traveler who looked through the eyes of creation to observe ecology and invention. As a world traveler I also observe through the eyes of creation and as a native Californian I have had extensive experience hiking and camping in the Sierra Nevada's. John Muir's writing style took me back to the places I have loved and remembered.

5 out of 5 stars The Finest Natural History.......2007-01-04

John Muir was one of the founders of the early 20th century conservation movement and godfather to today's environmentalism. This collection of three books and shorter works demonstrates the reason. Muir's description of the natural world is at times scientific, at others spiritual. Here nature is not some remote thing but the living manifestation of God's love. This is not a religious book as such and yet he finds that all parts of the natural creation from rocks and mountains to trees and animals have inherent within them a life force which makes them precious. Humans are neither removed from nor a "higher" part of nature. Muir shows that we are part of this larger whole - a radical concept when he proposed it and radical still. Muir set the standard in calling for preservation of the natural world. He was a genius as an inventor and scientist and, in addition, is one of our finest writers ever. These collected Nature Writings are simply beautiful and wonderfully presented in this Library of America edition.

"American forests! the glory of the world!"
                          - John Muir, 1901

Of all the extraordinary men and women that have made our nation great, one stands above all others for his dedication to preserving its unequaled natural beauty: John Muir. Founder of The Sierra Club, this lover of the western forests' legacy to our generation is the National Park system, through which millions of acres of unique ecosystems have been set aside for everyone's enjoyment.

"Muir: Nature Writings" is a collection of the writings of this Scottish expatriate who first stepped foot in America in 1849 as an eleven year old brawler and budding naturalist. Blessed with a childhood mastery of Latin and Greek as well as a discerning and disciplined eye, the learned boy possessed a poet's heart, a scientist's mind, and a theologian's soul. A genius, who as a teen whittled precision wooden scientific instruments, Muir used his diverse skills to vividly portray nature's life and death struggles on his family's Wisconsin farm in "My Boyhood & Youth." Here we find Muir learning to swim by observing frogs or recollecting the mindless slaughter of the Earth's most numerous bird, the now-extinct passenger pigeon, a forlorn tale that foreshadows the conservationist he was to become.

While in college polishing his mechanical skills, Muir was detoured into studying botany. Dropping out to make powered tools for factories, an accident left him rethinking that detour; he forsook the factory and walked across America. His journey led him to the Sierra Mountains, chronicled in "My First Summer in the Sierra." Now working as a shepherd, Muir drove his flock through Yosemite while making detailed nature studies. Marveling at the natural beauty of the land he would eventually champion as one of the first National Parks, Muir wrote: "We are now in the mountains and they are in us, kindling enthusiasm, making every nerve quiver, filling every pore and cell of us. Our flesh-and-bone tabernacle seems transparent as glass to the beauty about us, as if truly an inseparable part of it, thrilling with the air and trees, streams and rocks, in the waves of the sun, - a part of all nature, neither old nor young, sick nor well, but immortal."

Muir's writings here run the gamut from analytical to thrilling. In "Stickeen", the author and a canine companion cheat death while stranded mid-storm between crevasses of an Alaskan glacier. (A self-taught authority on glaciers, Muir would eventually have one in Alaska bear his name.) "The Mountains of California" is an in-depth look at the geologic formations, plants, and animals of the region. In this piece, he tells of being stuck on the side of volcanic Mt. Shasta, staying warm in the bitter cold by nestling up to steam vents. Muir also laments the loss of the vast meadows of the San Joaquin Valley as he discusses how to make a living post-Gold Rush by raising bees for honey.

What makes Muir so unique when compared with today's environmentalists is this belief that we can live in harmony with Creation if we take simple steps to prevent despoiling it. In "The American Forests" he wrote: "No place is too good for good men, and there is still room.... Every place is made better by them. Let them be as free to pick gold and gems from the hills, to cut and hew, dig and plant, for homes and bread...." Muir's balanced view of Man's place in the wilderness overwhelmingly reflects his Christian faith, for he never fails to stand in awe of each living thing God has made. That our government leaders were so swayed by Muir's writing attests to the power of his "holy" persuasion. All of us are indebted to John Muir's single-minded devotion to America's wilderness.

("Muir: Nature Writings" is part of the Library of America series. This diverse collection of the writings of great Americans ranges from sermons of early American preachers to analysis of the Vietnam War. The works of Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain, Ulysses S. Grant, Flannery O'Connor, and James Thurber are but a few that comprise the series. An invaluable lookingglass into the heart and soul of our nation, this collection is essential reading for anyone who longs to know what makes America unique.)

In a world brimming with wonderful volumes of the work of John Muir, here is the one edition in which you may find virtually everything you seek. To find it in such a handsome, handy, easy to negotiate book makes this a must for all lovers of Muir's writing. Eight inches tall by six wide and two inches thick, it is a durable and willing partner for excursions through the wilderness. Created for long life among library shelves and scholarly studies, this sleek little friend stows away quite comfortably in backpack or oversized coat pocket. Those who don't know Mr. Muir will meet the great lover of wildness (and perhaps history's most influential advocate of preservation) presented in a lovingly researched volume which includes informative notes on the evolution of Muir's field journal entries into published pieces, a chronology of his life and literary career, and all of the major writings for which he is known. A generous selection of his published essays and magazine articles reveal many previously unsuspected jewels of poetic prose. As a lifetime devotee of the works of Shakespeare, the Bible, and the immortal Scottish bard Robert Burns, Muir could recite extensive passages from all. Likewise, his writing breezes through the imagery and lessons drawn from these potent sources. Coffee table books brimming with Ansel Adams photography, biographies of Muir, and collections of his correspondence are all aspects of any comprehensive Muir collection. The words themselves, however, simple and elegantly bound, are where the journey might well begin.

                          Book Description

Although the traditional Sioux nation was in its last days when Luther Standing Bear was born in the 1860s, he was raised in the ancestral manner to be a successful hunter and warrior and a respectful and productive member of Sioux society. Known as Plenty Kill, young Standing Bear belonged to the Western Sioux tribe that inhabited present-day North and South Dakota. In My Indian Boyhood he describes the home life and education of Indian children. Like other boys, he played with toy bows and arrows in the tipi before learning to make and use them and became schooled in the ways of animals and in the properties of plants and herbs. His life would be very different from that of his ancestors, but he was not denied the excitement of killing his first buffalo before leaving to attend the Carlisle Indian School in Pennsylvania.

4 out of 5 stars A valuable insight into Lakota lifeways........2004-04-11

Being written for young people, Standing Bear's account of his Lakota childhood is necessarily sanitized and romanticized. Its focus is on the domestic life of his people. Mention is often made of the courage of the warriors but there is no description of any military action. An incident is related of an enemy warrior stumbling into the village. We are told that he was well treated and quickly released. It is hard to believe that that was typical treatment of an enemy. Similarly, the more adult themes of courtship and sexuality are largely ignored. What we are left with is a treasure trove of homely detail: how cooking was accomplished in the absence of metal pots, how the boys caught turtles in the creek, what games they played. This is the very warp and weft of everyday life that gets left out of the broad-sweep histories that concentrate on great battles and famous lives.

Standing Bear may not always be totally reliable, any more than any other commentator - for example, his account of leather tanning, which was strictly women's work, did not quite ring true for me. (Not that I have ever tanned a buffalo hide - I just doubt it can be done in quite the way he describes). All the same this remains an essential work, packed full as it is of fascinating detail, for anyone interested in understanding the lifestyle of the Sioux, and is a perfect gift for a youngster who expresses an interest in American Indians.

                              Book Description

This thoroughly researched work offers a new—and refreshingly realistic—look at the famous outlaw. Having combed interviews, memoirs, and primary documents, Weddle examines the family and community that produced Billy. He also debunks a number of misconceptions and falsehoods. Billy's childhood buddies in Silver City, New Mexico, remembered a smart, ambitious youth with a strong, loving mother and a distant stepfather. Acquaintances at Camp Grant, Arizona Territory, knew a resourceful teenager versed in the lawless ways of frontier survival. Both perspectives add up to a vivid and very human story. Previously unpublished photographs round out this volume.

"Jerry Weddle, master researcher and consummate grassroots historian, has made a major contribution to Billy the Kid scholarship. This book is must reading for anyone interested in the historical Billy."—Professor Paul Andrew Hutton, Executive Director, The Western History Association

I wasn't sure what to expect, being a devoted fan of Billy I can get very sensitive about material on him which I believe is false or slanderous. I know a good book when I read one, and this was a fabulous one. This did not claim, as so many articles , books and films do, that Billy killed 21 men,(he didn't, although he probably shot that many)or that he was a vicious psycho (he wasn't, he was a gentle, kind, likeable person). this book also dispelled some of the many lies and untruths told about Billy's reputation. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Billy the Kid or anyone who wants to read a real story without historical hearsay.

The central symbol of Muir's abusive father is the father's decision to become a lay preacher, and thus his determination to study the Bible all day, while dumping all the farm chores on young John. This puts John at the bottom of a new well, hacking through the rocky ground in search of water. While the holy father urges him on between inspirational readings. One wonders if the father was reading of Jesus's encounter with the woman at the well, offering himself as the living water.

John concluded it's time to get the heck out of Wisconsin and away from his dad, to roam around the mountains and forests of the great unexplored Western U.S., appreciating the water where God placed it in plain view.

Muir's experience of being forced to work like a Calvinist, while his dad sat around like a pietist, presents a juxtaposition which can be applied to other relationships we all come across in our lives. That, and the lesson that you need not be a perpetual victim of a rotten childhood. Muir certainly overcame it.

4 out of 5 stars Good for learning the "Inner Muir".......1998-12-31

I wouldn't recommend this as a first book for those who are interested or curious about Muir (try _My First Summer in the Sierra_ or _1000 Mile Walk_), but it gives a lot of insight, for me at least, on why Muir turned out the way he did. He had a cruel, strict father and had to endure a lot of pain and hardship, which made his latter wilderness travels so much easier and free in comparison.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting, if dry, memoir.......1997-12-15

John Muir, one of the great leaders of the ecological movement in America, tells of growing up on a farm in Wisconsin. He gives detailed information about the wildlife he sees growing up, which is interesting but does get a bit tedious. It was interesting to learn how Muir became interested in being an inventor; before reading this book I hadn't known of his inventions. It gives some insights into how he came to love and appreciate nature, and hints at his later desire to protect all things wild. Near the end of the book he writes, "I wandered away on a glorious botanical and geological excursion, which has lasted nearly fifty years and is not yet completed, always happy and free, poor and rich, without thought of a diploma or of making a name, urged on and on through endless, inspiring, Godful beauty." Certainly Muir's writing recalls Thoreau, and his spirit has lived on through the writings of such diverse people as Rachel Carson, Jack Kerouac, and Adolph Murie. This book is not one of his classics, but if you're interested in Muir or life on the plains before they became completely tamed, it's worth reading.
