5 out of 5 stars 80 essential sources for any business library.......2007-05-24

This is the third edition of one of the volumes in the "The Ultimate Series" published by Capstone Publishing Limited. I have also reviewed Des Dearlove's The Ultimate Book of Business Thinking and John Middleton's The Ultimate Strategy Library. The three volumes comprise an especially informative and valuable resource for busy executives as well as those now preparing for a business career. The brevity of coverage of individuals and individual books is inevitable, given the scope of each volume. For example, during the course of a 301-page narrative, Stuart Crainer provides a briefing on a total of 85 of "the greatest books that made management." They are arranged by author in alphabetical order but Crainer also offers a series of time-specific clusters that range from "Management prehistory" (e.g. Sun Tzu's The Art of War and Adam Smith's The Wealth of Nations) to "The nineties" (e.g. James Collins and Jerry Porras' Built to Last and Thomas Stewart's Intellectual Capital). The last works Crainer discusses were first published in 1998: Don Tapscott's Growing Up Digital and Patricia Seybold's Customers.com.

I like the format Crainer chose for each of the 80 commentaries. First, he provides a mini-bio of the given author, then a brief discussion of her or his "classic" book, followed by a few notes. In the Bibliography that follows the last commentary (devoted to William H. Whyte and Organization Man), Crainer lists all of each author's major works. Many readers will appreciate being introduced to certain works with which they may not have previously been familiar. For example, Frank Gilbreth's Motion Study (1911), Chester Barnard's The Functions of the Executive (1938), Frederick Herzberg's The Motivation at Work (1959), Marvin Bower's The Will to Manage (1966), Taiicho Ohno's Toyota's Production System (1978), and Joseph M. Juran's Planning for Quality (1988). To paraphrase Isaac Newton, they are among the "giants" upon whose shoulders so many more renowned business thinkers have since stood.

Of course, no such list is complete nor does Crainer claim that his is. My own opinion is that there are some notable pre-1998 omissions (e.g. Eric Drexler, Thomas Kuhn, Michael Hammer, and James Womack) but, to repeat, no such list is complete.

Crainer makes especially effective use of brief observations by Gary Hamel, each relevant to the given context, that are inserted throughout the narrative. Here are three representative examples:

On organizational learning: "If your organization has not yet mastered double-loop learning it is already a dinosaur. No one can doubt that organizational learning is the ultimate competitive advantage. We owe much to [Chris] Argyris and [Donald] Schon for helping us to learn about learning." (Page 8)

On the rise and fall of strategic planning: "Henry [Mintzberg] views strategic planning as a ritual, devoid of creativity and meaning. He is undoubtedly right when he argues that planning doesn't produce strategy. But rather than use the last chapter of [The Rise and Fall of Strategic Planning] to create a new charter for planners, Henry might have put his mind to the question of where strategies actually do come from!" (Page 177)

On organizational culture and leadership: "It is impossible to change a large organization without first understanding that organization's culture. Ed [i.e. Edgar H.] Schein gave us an ability to look deeply into what makes an organization what it is, thus providing the foundation of any successful effort at `transformation' or `change.' [Schein's book] Organizational Culture and Leadership remains essential reading for all aspiring `change agents.'" (Page 243)

Those who share my regard for this book are urged to check the other two volumes in the "The Ultimate Series" as well as Crainer's The Management Century, another brilliant achievement.

    Book Description

This book transcends current debate on government regulation by lucidly outlining how regulations can be a fruitful combination of persuasion and sanctions. The regulation of business by the United States government is often ineffective despite being more adversarial in tone than in other nations. The authors draw on both empirical studies of regulation from around the world and modern game theory to illustrate innovative solutions to this problem. Their ideas include an argument for the empowerment of private and public interest groups in the regulatory process and a provocative discussion of how the government can support and encourage industry self-regulation.

Dynamite! It separates the cuisine by region. Excellent

        3 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2003-03-07

I was very disappointed with this cookbook. I suppose the 1960's original publication should have tipped me off that this wouldn't be the place to look for authentic, exciting recipes. (Ethnic cooking in the U.S., at the time, wasn't known for being authentic or exciting.)
Most recipies are simplified and/or changed for western tastes. There is a heavy emphasis on recipes imported by settlers from other countries (lots of Asian and a fair number of British dishes); dishes which, presumably, would be more familiar to American readers.
There are far better African cookbooks available. (Don't know if it's still in print, but "African News Cookbook" is about the best I've seen so far.)

4 out of 5 stars Early Classic in African Gastronomy.......2000-07-10

When "Best of Regional African Cooking" was first published in 1970 (under the title "Kitchen Safari") it was more or less the first attempt at a comprehensive African cookbook. Certainly it contained what was then the largest collection of recipes from Sub-Saharan Africa ever assembled (it may hold that record still). The cuisine of Northern Africa is well represented (no surprise; there are far more cookbooks of Northern African recipes than Sub-Saharan recipes). Of the recipes from Sub-Saharan Africa: Western and Eastern Africa are well represented. The Southern African (e.g., South African) recipes are mostly of the Dutch and Malay variety (to be fair, the apartheid policy made it impossible to investigate the gastronomy of other South Africa peoples). There are very few recipes from Central Africa, as is usually the case with African cookbooks.

The recipes are good ones, well selected to be both authentic representations of African cuisine, and easy for the non-African cook to prepare and appreciate. Most of the ingredients are easy to obtain outside of Africa.

Harva Hachten's book is just as much a piece of journalism as a cookbook (though of course there are numerous recipes). She collected her information on African cooking on a few lengthy trips through Africa in the 1960's. What appears in the book is largely what she happened to run into as she made it her job to meet people, try their foods, and ask for their recipes.

Recipes and introductory tests are arranged by region: North Africa; West Africa; Southern Africa; Central Africa; East Africa. There is a glossary and a list of ingredient substitutions. A table of contents listing the recipes would have been useful (they are included in an index.)

4 out of 5 stars Many good recipes, but gaps in regions covered.......1999-07-02

This book would be a nice addition to your international cookbook collection. If you're looking for a comprehensive guide to African cooking, however, you might find this book incomplete. It contains a wide range of approachable recipes from North Africa, West Africa, South Africa, and East Africa (but its coverage of Central Africa is weak). There few books out there that clearly describe how to prepare traditional African dishes; if you want to explore the delicious and varied cusines of Africa, this book can help you.

The recipes from South Africa are almost exclusively Cape Malay in style. The cuisines of the rest of southern Africa (for example, Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Namibia, and Angola) are not included. Nor does the book include the Indian-influenced dishes of Durban or the African cuisine of the townships and former homelands of South Africa.

The book is particularly strong in North African and West African cooking. Most readers are certain to find something new and enjoyable in its pages.

            Book Description

In Bull!, Maggie Mahar tells the sweeping tale of the Great Bull Market of 1982-1999, a legendary run-up that pulled the entire nation into its gravitational field.

Mahar lays out the origins of the boom and takes the reader behind the scenes, on Wall Street, on Main Street, and in Washington, letting him see the story through the eyes of the fund managers, market gurus, analysts, politicians, business journalists, and 401(k) investors who, together, helped create the longest-running bull market in U.S. history. Some were touts; others were true believers. On the sidelines, a Greek Chorus of seasoned professionals tried, vainly, to describe the emperor's new clothes.

Filled with colorful portraits of many of the central figures of the boom years -- Alan Greenspan, Henry Blodget, James Cramer, Abby Joseph Cohen -- Bull! draws together a complex cast of characters, illuminating the web of relationships that kept the market aloft.

More than a financial history, Bull! is a lively, often witty social history of the stock market that became a part of popular culture. It is also the tale of individual investors, which chronicles the intimate stories of ordinary people -- housewives and college professors, salesmen and waitresses -- who got caught up in the excitement and then watched their life savings drain away.

How did it happen that the very real risks of investing in stocks were forgotten? Mahar explodes the myth of "stocks for the long run," explaining how the market's promoters crunched the numbers to create the illusion that if an investor stays in the casino just a little longer, he is guaranteed to come out a winner. Casting Warren Buffett in a new light, she explains how a value investor is, in the end, a long-term market timer who understands that success depends on how much you pay when you get into the market -- and when you get out. By putting the bull market of 1982-1999 in a larger historical context, she shows how, over time, longtime bull markets beget longtime bear markets.

The future defies prediction, but the history of financial markets makes one thing clear: markets always revert to a mean. Taken as a single story, Bull! is both an illuminating history and a cautionary tale about investing. Analyzing the economic and psychological forces that drive financial cycles, Mahar shows how an extraordinary influx of cash and credit, combined with the obsessive attention of a new financial media, created a cult of equities. Challenging the notion that stocks always outperform all other investments, she reveals why many of Wall Street's most experienced investors believe that the 21st-century investor needs to throw out the old rule book and make a new beginning as he plans for his financial future.

No investor should keep his or her money in the stock market without first reading this book.

3 out of 5 stars Get a glimpse of bull and bear markets.........2007-10-10

If you haven't actually observed various bull and bear markets in your life, this is one of the books which will give you different stories of boom and bust during years from 1982 to 2004. I was not observing the markets during the technology boom of 2000, but heard lots of stories on how the technology shares plummeted after the boom period. So I started reading this book to get a feel of what happened during these periods of boom and bust, surely I was not disappointed with the efforts of author in giving the glimpse of different events.

This book has some interesting chapters, one being about how the corporates lobbied to get around revealing the cost of stock options in financial statements and to get immunity from being sued with overly optimistic projections of profits. At times this book is boring with overly descriptions of some personalities who became celebrities during the boom periods and also about some stories of individual investors. So if you haven't really experienced different cycles of boom and bust, then this book might be a good for you.

5 out of 5 stars Mind-opening views of investment history.......2007-05-14

This is a very well written book about the ups and downs of the stock market. Mahar puts great investors' view points, plus convincing facts through the 20 some years of investment history. A very mind-opening and enjoyable reading. No wonder Warren Buffett recommanded it.

4 out of 5 stars Insights into the market psyche.......2007-03-29

Great expose on the bulls and the bears. What really drives the markets. What happens when people get too full of themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Wall St. doesn't have my best interest at heart???.......2006-04-10

This book does a great job breaking down the boom/bust cycles in the markets. From a history perspective, it is very entertaining. From a reality perspective, it is required reading for anyone investing in the markets. If you learn how people cheat or manipulate, you can sometimes avoid being manipulated or cheated in the future.

"History does not repeat, it rhymes." I forget who said that, but it is true. Learn about the boom/bust cycles and you can profit from them when they return. Understand the cycles and maybe when the music stops you wont be the only one without a chair.

If you think the people on Wall Street are your friends, if you think CNBC is giving you good advice, if you think your 401k is a safe investment, even if you think the stock market outperforms every investment over the long run, then you really should read this book.

1 out of 5 stars Going against the Zebra herd on this one.......2005-12-07

Have you noticed that anyone who writes a negative review on Amazon gets dinged more frequently?? Well, I'm using one of Maggie Mahar's take-away points who wrote about Gail Dudack and Jim Grant (market contrarians at the peak of the internet boom) to say this book is a not worth buying... I can almost hear the ding'ing now.

As the title suggests, this book is mostly about the market's history between Reagan to George W. Within that space, its a narrow assimilation of 6-9 books, 4-5 market contrarian interviews, and mostly financial news articles. For example, the stock market crash of '87 is very narrowly described as a cyclical and/or over-advancement of prices and over-exhuberance by buyers. Obviously, arguments such as these support the theme of the book. However, stock market fluctuations are fantastically complex and influenced by broader economic conditions and triggers. Several interlinked elements contributing to '87 would have been helpful to learn about: the Fed strategies at that time, post-Plaza Agreement aftermath on the dollar, intricate problems from UAL failed LBO, Milken's problems with a number of restructings, why gold was down, Real Estate syndicates boom in Texas, S&L liquidity, etc. And I'm just a novice writing this from memory.

Mahar is no economist, statistician, nor trader. Her style of writing and context of her arguments are similar to that of a financial journalist -- not unlike how "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room" was written. Moreover, her tone towards the latter half of the book turns noticeable negative as she constantly applies (dare I say "manipulates") certain events/information to support her argument that the Bull market was soooooo clearly overvaluing stocks and everyone was stupid to be caught up in the frenzy. Hind sight is 20/20. Sometimes her statistical analysis is weak. For example, on pg 318, she writes about how insider stock sales/buys are incorrigible, were almost frauds, and how the public ignored the street signs: "... from 1995 through the end of 2002, the Tribune's analysis showed that in 25% of all cases, the share price of the company in question tumbled by at least 20%-and sometimes as much as 50%- in the six months following the sale. Insiders were equally fortunate in picking their spots when buying their own companies' stock: more than half of all purchases preceded gains of more than 20%, which several well above 50%." Her use of the Tribune's 2003 Dow30 study to support her argument lacks insight and analysis: (a) 75% of all cases conversely mean that insiders were wrong to sell, (b) about half the insiders who bought were dumb, and (c) during that same period, what were company-specific fluctations (ie knowledgeable to insiders) vs. simply relative correlations to the DJIA.

If you are a casual reader interested in a chronicle of the markets, this book provides an overview of the times. However, if you are an investor with a medium-term memory, you may find that this book is not for you, as you invariably compare your recollections with her version of the chronicles; thus making this book questionable advice for the future.

In that regard, I was disappointed and could not help but to feel that this book represents not a "history" of that bull market, but rather "her history" of that bull market. A good history book should give you confidence in your education's integrity and thoroughness, particularly if you were living back then and remember things (unlike "1776").

In summary, I didn't so much disagree with the writer's points, but rather hoped that it would have been more broadly educational and analytical in order for it to be helpful as we move thru the 21st Century.

-- P.S. The above reviewer Mr. Nassim Nicholas Taleb is the author of "Fooled by Randomness" and complemented/cited by Mahar in this book. FYI.

            5 out of 5 stars Brilliant! A must-read book!.......2001-10-26

Do you want to be a millionaire? Certified Financial Planner Ed Dzwonkowski gives you the three reasons why you're not; You don't know what it takes, You know what it takes but you're not willing to do it, and, You don't believe you can become a millionaire.

How You Can Become a Millionaire, recently written and published by Mr. Dzwonkowski, is an easy-to-understand, step-by-step guide for building a lifetime of wealth. Indeed, its like having an advisor 24 hours each day that helps show the way, and builds confidence in your ability.

How You Can Become a Millionaire is divided into four parts. The first sets the stage by offering you the reasons others are not millionaires...and outlines the steps for you to succeed. These steps are discussed in detail in the remaining three chapters.

Part Two continues your education on how to develop an Easy Payment plan to accomplish your goal. After all, if there are Easy Payment plans to buy a washing machine, why not one for financial success? Part Three offers a thorough understanding
of the investment world so you can swim with the big fish, and not be eaten by the sharks.

Part Four enables you, with all you've learned in One, Two and Three, to invest properly for maximum financial gain, where to put your savings, use mutual funds, investment strategies, develop the best portfolio for you ...even how to protect your wealth.

Ed Dzwonkowski offers (pardon the pun) a wealth of information on how to become financially independent. How You Can Become a Millionaire proposes the means "...to travel a different road than the one most people travel." In this reviewer's opinion, here is a book for every wage-earner, one that can change your life!

3 out of 5 stars If you are an intermediate investor or better, not for you.......2000-09-08

While well written and informative, thorough and thoughtful, this is not for anyone that has a better then novice understanding of investing in the market. It will not give you new cutting edge information, but then, it doesn't promise that. It is the tried and true method of slow and steady savings based an annual 10% return. If you are new to investing it will give you a good base to build off of. One thing that was helpful was Ed's formula; zero six, which tells you what the dollar figure you would need to retire today.

4 out of 5 stars A straightforward, invigorating look at accumulating wealth.......1998-06-17

Possibility thinking and solid financial advice set the tone and foundation of Ed Dzwonkowski's inspirational "How You Can Become a Millionaire: Your Lifetime Guide for Building Wealth and Achieving Financial Independence," a sort of Money 101 approach to a dream realized, according to Dzwonkowski, by one of ever 100 American residents.

Dzwonkowski, a Certified Financial Planner, has organized the book wisely; skeptics and garden variety readers in need of gentle convincing are dealt with in Part 1 ("Getting Acquainted with the Idea of Becoming a Millionaire") and, having set the hook at that section's close, Dzwonkowski moves into everything-adds-up, factual discourses on the mathematics of becoming a millionaire.

All of the usual topics are here - investment risks and rewards, the particulars of stock market and mutual fund forays, portfolios, estate planning and strategies - but Dzwonkowski's real success is in the presentation. As he says, "becoming a millionaire does not happen overnight," and this credo, combined with the real life tools and techniques he provides are the seasonings that make the monetary lectures herein nourishing.

And then there's that indefatigable optimism of his: "What are you waiting for? An engraved invitation? Then consider this your engraved invitation: We, the current members of The Millionaires Club, hereby extend to you an open invitation to join the Club ... The only qualification for membership ... is that you accumulate a million dollars of wealth ... This invitation is good for the rest of your life (it only expires when you do)."

            Highly recommended for non-millionaires everywhere.

            Book Description

What basic ethical principles should guide American journalists to help them justify their invasion of an individual's privacy, to be "objective" in their reporting, to avoid being influenced by government or economic controls? A wire service and newsroom veteran and a sociologist and scholar in mass media/communications have designed a philosophical guide for students, scholars, and practitioners to use as a kind of "moral compass." Key excerpts from some of the most important writings on the subject from Milton to Louis Brandeis, from Plato to Sissela Bok, and from Adam Smith to John Merrill deal with some of the most serious contemporary issues in journalism today. This short text also includes the Society of Professional Journalists' Code of Ethics and a full index.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Philosophy for Journalists and Media Watchdogs.......2004-06-21

This is a unique collection of writings and book excerpts providing a philosophical and ethical background for anyone interested in the ethics of journalism or the media system. These go as far back as Plato in ancient times, to the medieval musings on free speech by John Milton and Francis Bacon, which in turn started the press freedom concepts later brought to fruition by the likes of John Locke and "Cato," which are all presented here. The book proceeds to more modern examinations of the ethics and issues behind the press, including powerful submissions by media watchdogs such as Ben Bagdikian and A.J. Liebling. The book ends on a strong note with the prophetic but problematic findings of the 1947 Hutchings Commission and the rebuttal by John C. Merrill, which are strongly leftist and rightist respectively, and wrap up the modern realms of thought from all sides of the matter. The only problem with this volume is that some of the writings have been fragmented and edited due to space concerns, making some submissions difficult to follow (such as the essay by Samuel Warren and Louis Brandeis). In the case of book excerpts such as these, the editors should have considered a more intensive review-style description of each book's main points. [~doomsdayer520~]

                Book Description

In Concepts of Federal Taxation, authors Murphy and Higgins take a more conceptual, less technical approach to federal taxation. The conceptual approach presents taxation as a small number of unifying concepts - overriding principals that apply to all specific tax rules and regulations. These concepts define tax! Therefore, by knowing the underlying concepts that shape tax law, students can understand the wide range of tax rules and regulations without having to commit every one to memory!
