            Book Description

If you read the original Buffettology, you know exactly half of what you need to know to effectively apply Warren Buffett's investment strategies.

Published in 1997, the bestselling Buffettology was written specifically for investors in the midst of a long bull market. Since then we've seen the internet bubble burst, the collapse of Enron, and investors scrambling to move their assets -- what remains of them -- back to the safety of traditional blue chip companies. As price peaks turned into troughs, worried investors wondered if there was any constant in today's volatile market. The answer is yes: Warren Buffett's value investing strategies make money.

The New Buffettology is the first guide to Warren Buffett's selective contrarian investment strategy for exploiting down stocks -- a strategy that has made him the nation's second-richest person. Designed to teach investors how to decipher and use financial information the way Buffett himself does, this book guides investors through opportunity-rich bear markets, walking them step-by-step through the equations and formulas Buffett uses to determine what to buy, what to sell -- and when. Authors Mary Buffett and David Clark explore Buffett's recent investments in detail, proving time and again that his strategy has earned enormous profits at a time no one expects them to -- and with almost zero risk to his capital.

In short, The New Buffettology is an essential companion to the original Buffettology, a road map to investment success in the worst of times.

4 out of 5 stars Good review, a little too much word.......2007-06-08

This is a good book, and a very easy read. However, it sometimes repeats very simple material over and over which could make the reader bored.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it!.......2007-04-07

I am a big fan of Warren Buffet so I had read about his life and his investment style from magazines and googling. I expected to learn more from this book but was very disappointed. It's mostly information I have already learned by researching in the internet.

            5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-03-27

Easy to read and gives a keen insight to how warren buffet selects his investments. Great for intermediate investors.

3 out of 5 stars Great concepts but the name..........2007-02-07

The general Buffet concepts are covered well. I take off stars because her writing style is so childish as to make you think you are in Kindergarden. Also the whole Warren this and Warren that as if he told her all this is sleasy. Either treat him as a 3rd party or get him to endorse the book personally.

5 out of 5 stars An Illuminating Peek Into The World Of Warren Buffett.......2006-12-12

This book is a "most of what you need to know about value investing but didn't know what to ask" approach to the investment philosophy of Warren Buffett. I also own the first book, but didn't review it. This one is much better.

The New Buffettology is a book of examples. I think that's what I like most about it. It has plenty of theory about the importance of a company having a durable competitive advantage, honest and able management, staying within a circle of competence, ensuring a margin of safety exists, how interest rates affect stock prices, and more. That's great, but the rubber hits the road with the numerous case studies of actual Buffett investments and how he applied the above concepts to help him decide to invest in Coca Cola, Gillette, the Washington Post, and Geico, to name a few.

Along with the case studies come the formulas. Lots and lots of formulas. Does the company have strong earnings with an upward trend? Plug 10 years worth of earnings into your spreadsheet and calculate the annual earnings growth rate. Does the company return an above average Return-On-Equity? Mary Buffett & David Clark show you how to break out those Value Line reports and plug in 10 years worth of ROE numbers into your spreadsheet to calculate the average annual return on shareholders equity for the last decade. What's the stock's value relative to a Treasury bond? You'll learn how to calculate the answer here.

The exercises go on case study after case study. I love it. Roll up your sleeves; dust off your BA-35 solar calculator and get ready to rock. If you want the skinny on value investing ala Buffett style, you had better be prepared to get your hands dirty because this is a thinking investor's book.

This book doesn't just TALK about financial analysis. It shows you how to DO it. Nothing is more boring than long windy theories with no "meat" to back them up. This book serves up the meat in Texas sized portions. Exactly where does one go for 10 years of financial information? Where do you find the current government bond rate? What's important in an annual report? Just how do you find companies that make products with a durable competitive advantage? What should you read? What should you watch? What habits should you develop? How do smart investors use "scuttlebutt" to help them form an opinion about a company? The answers may surprise you.

If value investing is what you want to do, then you have much to learn. And indeed, this book is a great place to start. It's not the only value investing book you should ever read, but is should definitely be one of the first.

Today's volatile market environment makes it increasingly difficult for regular investors to achieve top results. The Research Driven Investor presents walk-through examples of a wide variety of investment models, based on more than 100 years of stock market data and research from Ned Davis Research, that will help investors use technical indicators to consistently produce clear buy and sell signals--and achieve top results.

              *Consistently identify market turning points
              *Allocate funds among asset classes
              *Focus on emerging market themes

                    Book Description

The Ethics of Teaching provides a frank discussion of the most frequently encountered ethical dilemmas that can arise in educational settings, as well as tips on how to avoid these predicaments and how to deal with them when they do occur. The goal is to stimulate discussion and raise faculties' consciousness about ethical issues.

Ethical dilemmas are presented as short, engaging case scenarios, most of which are based on actual situations, so as to furnish more realistic and interesting stimuli for individual reflection and group discussion. These scenarios offer the opportunity to consider the subtle complexities inherent in the social and psychological contexts in which educator-student interactions occur and the effects of those complexities on ethical decision making. Each case is followed by a detailed analysis and advice. The book's 195 cases are grouped into 22 chapters representing topics, such as the controversial classroom presentations and assignments, debatable testing and grading practices, problematic student-faculty interactions, dual-role relationships with students, collegial conflicts, managing very difficult students, and confidentiality dilemmas.

The Ethics of Teaching: A Casebook, Second Edition:
                    *focuses on commonly encountered ethical "gray areas" that have no clear solution;
                    *includes questions to stimulate discussion of related ethical issues;
*concludes with a chapter on prevention, peer mentoring, and intervention; and
*serves as excellent "assigned reading" to stimulate group discussion in teaching workshops and faculty development programs.

The first edition of this book evolved by collecting a variety of teaching situations that commonly occur in college and university settings. The authors then created responses to the situations and circulated both the cases and the responses to reviewers from a number of departments across the country. As a result, the vast majority of the cases are "discipline free." The second edition features many new cases to reflect recent trends and events related to academic ethics. Questions were added to stimulate discussion and to further elaborate the issues.

Potential buyers should note that this book concerns itself with the ethics of teaching at the college level. It does not discuss high school, middle school or elementary education, and there's certainly nothing on the ethical challenges of special ed. The discussion of each case seems pretty sensible, but it's brief and so provides a starting point for discussion rather than real resoluton of problems.

                      Book Description

This comprehensive collection presents a case-method approach to teaching business ethics, making it ideal for advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in both philosophy and business departments. It contains a wide range of individual, managerial, and corporate cases, many with an international perspective. All cases have been classroom-tested at the Harvard Business School; most have been developed in the field rather than in the library. The third edition is now in softcover for the first time with 15% fewer pages. Nine new cases (of the total 53 cases) cover such topics as labor-management trust, product liability, foreign bribery, the Dow bankruptcy over breast implant lawsuits, and more. A new appendix, "Ethical Frameworks for Management," provides students with ethical frameworks for analysis and a second new Appendix, "Bridging East and West in Management Ethics," discusses certain basic similarities between Asian and Western ethical ideals.

The Strange Deaths of President Harding, by Robert Ferrell is a well researched and documented work that concerns itself with debunking many of the myths that surround the legacy of President Harding. Ferrell begins by recounting a story about a time when he was in college driving through Ohio with a carload of friends. Nearing the Harding Memorial, he drove onto the memorial grounds and stopped the car. At that moment, he pointed out to his friends that it was Harding's tomb, and everyone including Ferrell, laughed. Indeed Ferrell's story as he indicated, demonstrated how the passage of years can change a person's mind. And yet, as he also indicates, Harding continues to be ranked last in the presidential polls. Ferrell sets out not to argue that Harding should be considered a great or near great president--he simply calls for an honest reconsideration of Harding. Ferrell begins by offering evidence that Harding died of a heart attack, from overexertion and after years of suffering from heart disease; He disproves the theory that Florence Harding poisoned her husband. Ferrell then challenges the claims made by Nan Britton, who claimed Harding fathered her child. After which, Ferrell discusses the scandals of the Harding administration and the aftermath. He goes into great detail questioning the motives of a few journalists and authors who relentlessly attacked Harding's reputation and the many salacious biographies written before the Harding papers were opened that relied on rumor, gossip and unsubstantiated claims--and subsequent biographies after the Harding papers opened that continued to rely heavily on these earlier, albeit inaccurate works, giving little to no consideration of the Harding papers. Ferrell makes a compelling argument that many of the stories surrounding Harding would have been disproven had the Harding papers been available. He also suggests that Florence Harding, in her well meaning attempts to protect the legacy of her late husband by burning his papers,(she believed she had burned the majority of his papers but was not aware that she possessed only a very, very small portion of his papers) unwittingly helped hasten the maligning of her husband. Overall Ferrell makes a compelling case that given the inaccuracies that have persisted for decades regarding Harding, there should and must be a reexamination of Harding's legacy that separates fact from fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, the truth about Harding, well documented at that.......2005-09-18

Americans have always had a love hate relationship with the truth. We love the truth because it's something that we believe in, but we hate the truth when it is less entertaining than tawdry details dreamt up in the minds of scandal mongers. Such is the case of the Nation's 29th President Warren G. Harding, for whom lore wins out over the truth.

"The Strange Deaths of President Harding" is Robert Ferrell's painstakingly researched retort to the years of lies, myths and lore that have enveloped the legacy of President Warren G. Harding, the nations 29th President (1921-1923). At the time of Harding's death in 1923, he was one of the most beloved people in the nation. During the trip that returned his body to Washington D.C. for the State Funeral, millions of Americans lined the railway tracks to pay tribute to him. Adding to the speculation of wrong doing was Mrs. Harding's death in 1924, leaving both Harding's defenseless against the rising tide of tales surrounding them and the President's appointees. The Harding's reputations were so harmed by the public's inability to separate the man from his appointee's actions that their final resting place, completed in 1927 wasn't dedicated until 1931.

Ferrell's strength is not in writing a juicy tell all, but in writing a well documented expose on the truths about the Harding's, and the truth is always less juicy to the American people than the rumors that have persisted. Ferrell does an outstanding job at stripping away the salacious speculations (for example, Mrs. Harding did not kill her husband as Gaston Means speculated) and circumstantial evidence that has damned Harding to be appraised as one of the worst Presidents in American History. Indeed, once free of innuendo and false labels, Harding actually comes out as an average President who gave to much power the wrong the people, and suffered dearly because of this loyalty.

So if you are one of those who believe that Mrs. Harding and Dr. Sawyer conspired to kill Harding, or that Harding fathered Nan Britton's baby or that even Nan Britton worte "The President's Daughter", Ferrell is poised to poke you in the eye with fact patterns and research that show that Harding died of end stage heart disease, no concrete evidence exists to support the paternal claims of Britton and that Britton's book was most likely written by her middle-age mentor.

Despite Ferrell's outstanding work, this book will never enjoy the success it and its writer fully deserve and that is a true American tragedy. Had Ferrell set out to trash the reputation of an American hero, this would have been a best seller, his face would have appearred on the cover of Time and Oprah would have chosen this for her book club. Regardless, this remains a must read for those people who value truth over myth, and honor over dishonor.

1 out of 5 stars Whitewash, Sexist Untruths.......2004-08-17

I read through this book very carefully, as well as that of John Dean's recent one on Harding. Dean's is much more balanced, and gives a sense of Harding's attributes in the context of his very real and deep weaknesses for women and drink and gambling. Why is it that Ferrell cannot see the whole man and must whitewash him into a hero? To me the real hero is one who overcomes his failings to succeed. Also, I suspect the author is old, because it is amusing that he dismisses every woman's opinion as "gossip" yet takes as bible truth the gossip of men like the mail clerk! I also read a book about his wife and noticed that this book uses a sanitized "for public eyes" version of the doctor's notes - while the Mrs. Harding book uses the raw handwritten first and real notes. And the most obvious fact - the face of Nan Britton's daughter - speaks more obviously to the fact that Harding did father the child. Why is it hard to believe that a ditzy mistress can't remember exact times and hours of everything and did as she was told to burn every single letter her great hero asked her to? If you want to see a rush job and a lot of failure in biography - this is the one. But if you want the real story of the Hardings read John Dean's book, Professor Murray's excellent book, Francis Russell - who actually interviewed many of the people involved in the 1950's when they were old-timers, and the Mrs. Harding story.

4 out of 5 stars NOT A VERY EXCITING BOOK.......2004-07-17

This is an attempt to look at President Harding from a different perspective. The general opinion is that this man was one of the worse presidents this country has every had. Although Mr. Ferrell does not try to totally reverse this opinion and make President Harding out to be a great president he does attempt to explain how the Harding Administration was a reflection of the 1920s and what the people wanted and needed from their government.

The many "deaths" relates first to his physical death. President Harding was -- contrary to what his aides wanted people to believe -- not a well man and had a severe heart condition. He went on a tour to the west coast and was so beaten down physically that he was laid up on bed rest for several days with reports on his conditions being monitored by the news media. The first couple of days the reports were grim and then suddenly the reports became optimistic. Then, just as suddenly the man was dead.

The other deaths of President Harding relates to the death of his image. He reportedly had affairs and illegitimate children. His name was mired in the Teapot Dome Scandal. His accomplishments were diminished by the events that followed his administration. In the end most President Harding's accomplishments were forgotten and so, too, was President Harding.

                            Book Description

Awesome inside-track from the diaries of Gaston B. Means and his the Department of Justice Investigations. Means asserts that Harding was poisoned. Mrs. Harding employed Gaston Means as a private detective in 1921. Teapot Dome was breaking. The scandal took its toll, and by the spring of 1923, Harding was visibly distraught at what he regarded as the betrayal of his friends who were taking advantage of his kindliness and lax administration. He sought escape from Washington in mid-June by taking a trip to Alaska with his wife and a large entourage. On his way home at the end of July, the president complained of abdominal pain, but he seemed to rally as he rested at a San Francisco hotel. On the evening of August 2, however, as his wife read to him from a magazine, Harding suddenly died from either a heart attack or stroke. This book is full of cool, insider and conspiracy "stuff" (for lack of a better word).

The appendix lists a number of deaths, suicides, investigation notes, a request by Mrs. Harding that no death mask be made, a few details on the death of General Sawyer ("died in the same mysterious manner" as Harding) who may or may not have been in Harding's death room, etc.

The Teapot Dome Scandal (also called The Oil Reserves, or Elk Hills Scandal) in American history, was a scandal of the early 1920s surrounding the secret leasing of federal oil reserves by the Secretary of the Interior, Albert B. Fall. After President Warren G. Harding transferred supervision of the naval oil reserve lands from the Navy to the Department of the Interior in 1921, Fall secretly granted to Harry F. Sinclair of the Mammoth Oil Company exclusive rights to the Teapot Dome (Wyoming) reserves (April 7, 1922). He granted similar rights to Edward L. Doheny of Pan American Petroleum Company for the Elk Hills and Buena Vista Hills reserves in California (1921-22). In return for the leases, Fall received large cash gifts and no-interest "loans." When the affair became known, Congress directed President Harding to cancel the leases; the Supreme Court declared the leases fraudulent and ruled illegal Harding's transfer of authority to Fall. Although the president himself was not implicated in the transactions that had followed the transfer, the revelations of his associates' misconduct took a severe toll on his health; disillusioned and exhausted, he died before the full extent of the wrongdoing had been determined.

In 1920 Harding won the presidency by the greatest popular vote margin to that time. He died during his third year in office and was succeeded by Vice President Calvin Coolidge. His brief administration accomplished little of lasting value, however, and soon after his death a series of scandals doomed the Harding presidency to be judged among the worst in American history.

Gaston Means was a bagman for Harding's Attorney General Harry Daugherty's Justice Department and a private investigator for Mrs. Harding getting the dope on the President's activities with Nan Britton. Means kept diaries and told his story to May Dixon Thacker after he got out of jail in 1928. She seems to have believed him. The book went through eleven printings from 1930-31, so it must have been a big story then.

Net/net, Means protrays Mrs. Harding as a wacko who all but tells him she killed her husband to save him from the gang who manipulated him and the scandal that inevitably broke. My interest in the book was less about Harding himself but how it relates to three books, "Carter Beats the Devil", "The Jazz Bird" and "Roscoe", all of which touch on the era. I suggest the following:

Harding and "The Duchess" did not share the romantic feeling Glen David Gold suggests; they hated each other.

George Remus probably did pay $500,000 to Daugherty through Jess Smith (who later committed "suicide" but was probably murdered if you believe Means' intimations).

There is as much chance that Gaston Means' story is the whole truth as there would be if William Kennedy's Roscoe told it!

When Michael Berube's second son Jamie was born with Down syndrome, life as he had known it was gone. Suddenly abstract questions the successful academic and author had been too busy to think about were thrust before him. Berube tells how he and his wife came to know this astonishing new person as their son, an individual like their other son and yet who, to the world, was not an individual but the syndrome itself. Berube intersperses the story of Jamie's development with a critical analysis of society's response to disability, the inadequacies of American health care, and a discussion of such issues as eugenics and the priority society gives to budgeting for the disabled.

                                        Book Description

When Jamie Bérubé was born with Down syndrome in 1991, he was immediately subject to the
medical procedures, insurance guidelines, policies, and representations that surround every child our society
designates as disabled.  In this wrenching yet ultimately inspiring book, Jamie's father, literary scholar Michael
Bérubé, describes not only the challenges of raising his son but the challenge of seeing him as a person
rather than as a medical, genetic, or social problem.

I had expected this book to be a memoir about a boy with down syndrome, I thought that it was a dramatic story with lots of emotion. Instead it's simply a book discussing in great depth about biology and genetics. It discusses the reproduction process and mitosis and goes on and on on the topic of genetics. The book later goes on to talk about abortion and whether or not it should be allowed, and many other related debates. While I found the discussions about genetics and abortion to be relatively interesting, I don't understand why the book is based around it. This book is not so much a memoir as it is a biology textbook in disguise. if you want to read a biology textbook then by all means, buy this book. However, if you would like to read a touching memoir about a boy and his life with down syndrome, then try a different book, because as other reviewers have said: this book is not what it claims to be

I read this book as a pediatrician wanting to gain insight into my patients and their families. I really enjoyed the descriptions of raising their child. However, I found the philosophy and policy analysis a little too long winded and less helpful.

                                        4 out of 5 stars Seeing a child from a parent's point of view.......2005-10-03

Berube writes a compelling book about his struggles to remain true to the parent/child relationship with his son who is diagnosed with Down's syndrome. Berube's book does a nice job of showing a different side of Downs syndrome - one where a child is a child, not someone (thing) to be feared, locked away or pitied. He writes clearly about the pressures to medicalize his son (meaning talk about him in the ways doctors would) since the medical world is such a part of their history with him. He tells of how he and his wife work to maintain decisions that are respectful of the child they are raising. Berube does a great job of explaining medical processes while also telling where they fall short, how they apply differently to different people and how he can continue to see others' points of view and wish more people could see his. Berube brings up big issues like abortion and (public vs private) health care to name a few. He relates his personal feelings to larger social conditions like how our society treats people with disabilities (which is not very well). This is a must read for teachers, doctors, nurses, and infact everyone, since we, as a society, need to work on seeing disabled people as people.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book on the disabled in modern society.......1999-03-06

This book works best as memoir. Berube is very moving when he describes the first years of his son's life. I too am the father of a boy with Down's syndrome and can vouch for the clarity and truthfulness of the account. The book's many digressions into politics and philosophy could put off some readers, but most of them are well-worth reading and pondering. I only wish they hadn't interrupted the flow of the personal story. The only sidebar I really disagreed with was the one on abortion. It was too strident (Berube is pro-choice), especially coming from someone well-placed to see both sides of this issue. That said, I would recommend this book to any parent of a mentally retarded child, or, for that matter, to any citizen concerned about the place of disabled people in our society. I hope Berube writes another book ten years from now and lets us know how Jamie is doing.

4 out of 5 stars A moving story of a father and his special son.......1998-11-14

Michael Berube's Life As We Know It is both one parent's memoir of raising a Down Syndrome boy and a larger exploration of how our society views those different from the "norm." Berube and his wife had no idea their second child would be "disabled" at birth, and much of the book recounts their joy and struggles in raising Jamie, a very unique and special boy. However, Berube's book also has a larger purpose and context. He tackles how our society labels persons like Jamie, and how this use of language influences the child's outcome. For example, in the early part of this century, the common medical name for Jamie's condition was "Mongoloid idiot." This term certainly expressed what society thought such children were capable of; predictably, the common medical strategy was to give up on these children, institutionalize them, and move on. With the passage of time, terminology has changed, and Berube argues that this change both reflects and directs society's view of its members.

The biggest struggle for Berube as a parent, and for us I believe as a society, is to get beyond -- or change entirely -- the labels given and focus on the persons and capacities behind such monikers. Berube's son, like my three (fortunately not "differently abled") children, is a unique person, and to overemphasize the name given to his condition (or the stereotypes invariably called forth) is to shortchange both Jamie, his parents, and all of us. Berube sensibly does not argue that Jamie would be without problems if everyone failed to name his condition. He makes plain, however, that there is more to destiny and parenting than name-calling. A very important and moving book.
