5 out of 5 stars superb guide with fascinating rankings.......2001-11-01

I found this guide to be immensely helpful in getting the real story - good, bad and ugly - about the leading consulting firms. The book also has a fascinating new poll/ranking of the 50 most prestigious management consulting firms to work for. (As might be expected, the consultants surveyed rated McKinsey as the #1 most prestigious and BCG as #2). I would highly recommend reading this guide.

The book has detailed insider accounts of life inside every major consulting firm, including its history, areas of specialization, and tips on the hiring and interviewing process. Highly recommended for job seekers and consultants alike.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide Not Enough Cases.......2001-01-14

This is an excellent book for undergraduates who are looking to prepare themselves for an interview in consulting or finance. I took account a couple years ago and didn't remember everything about it. But this book gives a good review of all the necessary topics that would be needed during an interview. It covers business strategy technics, marketing strategies, and finance related topics. While the review covers half of the book, another tenth is focused on some real interviews from MBA students or other companies. Another quarter is actual case interviews. The author does go through on how to answer these cases. However, the maximum length give to each case was 2 pages. To me, that was not nearly enough for a case. And also, there are only about 15 real cases, there are about 15 practice ones. The last 15 percent is dedicated to guesstimates and brainteasers.

So overall, it's a good book; however, I wish there were more cases.

1 out of 5 stars Marginally helpful and overpriced.......2000-11-03

This book is poorly written, inconsistent, and not very helpful. It's also very overpriced. You might have better luck with another guide (Wetfeet.com). But avoid this as it's a waste of money and time.

5 out of 5 stars Get the newer (Sept. 2000) addition.......2000-10-14

Thanks Vault,

I would make sure to get the updated addition:

Vault.com Guide to Case Interviews, 3rd Edition by Mark Asher (Paperback - September 2000)

2 out of 5 stars Bad walk-throughs.......2000-06-03

This book has some really good explanations of the case interview format, pointers on conduct and overviews of frameworks. However, it had some really bad case examples. The sample solutions given did not seem to follow the clean logical and analytical approach that Wet Feet Press' "15 Cases" displayed for their sample responses. In fact, the answers given in this book are a good example of what to avoid: a lot of flair and big words and not a whole lot of case-solving.

4 out of 5 stars An indispensable Guide!.......1999-11-24

It was the perfect reference guide for my consulting innterviews- especially the guesstimate questions. Also, a great companion to the Vault.com Guide to Consulting!

5 out of 5 stars A powerful read.......1999-02-26

I'm not sure what the last writer meant. This book is the centerpiece of my section here at business school - the writing is great and the info goes deep. As for the binding -- again, I think the last writer is confusing this book with another -- it's a fully bound book.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it would be.......1999-02-17

I bought this book due to all the great reviews I read on it, but I found that it didn't really have all that much info that was different from what you could find at the companies web site, I was also disappointed that it was simply a binded book of copies, not a actual book!!! It did have some good information, but I would suggest just going to the websites of the company

This book covers all the legal and business issues that special events professionals need to understand -- from contractual considerations to little-known governmental regulations with heavy ramifications. Ignorance of the law can prove very costly in an industry in which expectations must be met the first time, and in our ever-more litigious society, the need for this niche title is clear.

      Book Description

In the spirit of A Year in Provence comes the romantic tale of a woman, a baker, and their loaf What is it about bread? Why am I, here in the middle of my life, so enamored of French loaves? Two images kept cropping up: two French people sitting in a cafe for a long afternoon of eating thick hunks of bread and drinking cups of coffee, and a Frenchman on a bicycle with a loaf slung across his handlebars. These visions seemed to depict lives soaked in leisure, where there was time for the good things. . . . Then this thought ambled forth: It's the dailiness of bread, like a reliable friend. . . . My plan starts to billow forth. My project, as I imagine it, will be a natural history, an ecology of bread. The story of a loaf. Overcome by a passion for French bread, Sara Mansfield Taber travels to Brittany in search of a loaf, which like the lifestyle that must surely accompany it, is perfect in its simplicity. After many months of seeking, she tears off a hunk of pain trois rivieres, made by Gold Medal baker Monsieur Jean-Claude Choquet of Blain, Loire-Atlantique. It "smelled like heaven and tasted a mile deep." It tasted honest. Here was her loaf.

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Book.......2002-02-10

I just love the style of this portrait of all the people who contribute to a perfect loaf of French Bread. Beats Peter Mayle hands down in authenticity and beautiful writing.

I loved this book! It is a wonderful read, the language always fresh, and the author's insights wise, sometime sad, but always big hearted. I learned a lot about modern-day France, but also salt, yeast, water, wheat -- and how the whole world is kneaded into something as simple as a good loaf of bread.

                Book Description

Few presidents have sparked as much interest in recent years as Ronald Reagan, already the subject of a large number of biographies and specialized studies. This concise biography, based on the latest research into the Reagan archives and synthesis of the large memoir literature that has appeared in the past decade, explores the shaping of his values and beliefs during his childhood in the American heartland, his leadership of the American conservative movement, and his successful political career culminating in the first two-term presidency since Dwight Eisenhower. Pemberton finds Reagan's personal career and ability to understand and communicate with the American people admirable, but finds many of the long-term effects of his presidency harmful. This is the first complete survey of Reagan's life for a general audience, and the first book to make use of the Reagan Library archival sources.

4 out of 5 stars Fine one volume biography of Reagan.......2007-03-11

There aren't too many "fair and balanced" opinions out there on Presidents Reagan, Clinton, and GW Bush. This book on Reagan by Pemberton comes as close as most to some semblance of objectivity. No book comes close to the quality and objectivity of a recent president as does Cannon's "President Reagan: Role of a Lifetime." But Pemberton does a fine job in covering Reagan's entire life in a small number of pages (214 of text).

I used the book in an American government class and I thought it was readable for the students and told the larger story of the 20th century. Reagan's life, whether one agreed with him or not, in many ways represented the story of the 20th century. After WWII, the nation embraced FDR and his policies. In time, with the Great Society and the rise of anti-communism, the nation stepped away from the liberal label. Contrary to what many on the right believe, the nation never embraced conservatism to the same degree it embraced the New Deal, but changes did occurred. And the end of the Cold War was another huge event. The left and right will always argue over the impact Reagan had on the end of the Cold War, but Pemberton did well in presenting the many different theories. He also was quite fair in analyzing Reagan's budget and tax policies, which are also still debated today.

3 out of 5 stars short and to the point.......2000-09-19

If you are searching for an opinionated book on Reagan, than this is not the book to read. If it is general information with a few suprising tid-bits that you seek, than this book is worth your time. Pemberton tries his best to give an objective analysis of Reagan throughout this book. His thesis is that Reagan's up-bringing, job/co-worker influences, and general attitude toward life and the American people shaped his ideas for running the nation. Pemberton covers all the stops, from Reagan's mother's influence, to his radio career, to his acting career, to his governorship, to his presidency. Pemberton gives the facts about the Iran Contra mess and leaves it to the reader to decide Reagan's involvement. If you do not know much about Reagan, and you seek information but not opinions, than this book is an excellent resource that reads well.

2 out of 5 stars Blowing the covers off the Reagan presidency.......1999-12-21

After reading this book, I was left to wonder: What did RR really do while president? The book is written from the middle, but with an emphasis toward the positive aspects of RR's presidency, with small amounts of negativity thrown in for balance. The book doesn't talk much about any one subject. A good quick primer on this mediocre president who will go down in history as one of the most divisive, deceptive presidents of our country.

                2 out of 5 stars Flawed thesis........1999-09-22

The author only gives credit to Reagan for restoring America's pride. He also presents the same myth about "mortgaging our future" with the national debt. Hey historians, if we've mortgaged our future, why is the economy so strong today? If you make 50,000 with 5,000 in debt, are you better off making 500,000 with 25,000 in debt?

2 out of 5 stars So-So look at Reagan, lacks depth.......1999-05-27

The book is just over 200 pages of text, so detail is obviously lacking. In addition some statements/ideas are repeated verbatim, as if I didn't get the point. If you are somewhat interested in the 80's or Reagan this is a decent starting point. Think of it as the Cliff Notes on Reagan.

                Book Description

Before he received his diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome (AS) in the 1970s, Marc Fleisher was considered mentally retarded; yet he went on against the odds to gain two math degrees and to undertake post-graduate studies in math. In this engaging story Marc relates how, supported by his family and by services for people with autism, and despite family tragedy and personal difficulties, he learnt to get the most out of life. He shares, with humour and candour, a multitude of practical tips for people with AS, and those around them, rounding off his story with appendices on astronomy, parallel universes, and the mathematics of unfeasibly large numbers.

                4 out of 5 stars Autistic Life.......2006-01-29

While autobiographical, the aim of this book is not so much to tell a story as to raise awareness of autism and what autistic people can achieve in life. It's a bit overwhelming at first, bursting with ambition and enthusiasm, but it settles down very quickly into a highly compact description of the first 30 years of Marc's life. I think I enjoyed the appendices on large numbers, the universe, and the art of joke telling at the back most of all though... What did the sine say to the cosine that wasn't making sense? I think you're going off at a tangent... Oh dear, oh dear.

                5 out of 5 stars A Godsend! .......2006-01-19

This book is an inspirational Godsend. Fleisher, like so many people on the autism/Asperger's (a/A) spectrum was misdiagnosed. Unlike many of his fellows who have been misdiagnosed with psychiatric labels, he was misdiagnosed with mental retardation. He was 11 years old before an astute professional realized that he had Asperger's Syndrome.

Asperger's Syndrome is the spectrum partner to autism. People on the spectrum will show an overlapping in behaviors, regardless of their place on the continuum. Asperger's, as with any form of autism is a sensori-neurobiological condition that affects responses to sensory input; sensory integration and communication. It is as varied as there are individuals who have it.

Fleisher, a truly gifted man with an extensive background in mathematics opens his world of special interests and talents to others in this outstanding book. I loved it when he blew the whistle on "holding therapy," a ghastly method which I truly abhor. Fleisher does an exemplary job of explaining why this method is undesirable for many people on the spectrum; he turns the tables by posing the question of how much a neurotypical (NT) person would hate it. Who would want to be forced to submit to something that brings an array of sensory input and can often be viewed as punitive, restrictive and in some cases painful? It is such a refresher to see another person call this quack nostrum for what it really is.

Donna Williams, another scholarly author with autism says that all this method accomplishes is to "teach the desired response" so as to be released. Her books together with this one and Edgar Schneider's works are ideal for intellectuals with autism. This is a book I heartily recommend.
