1 out of 5 stars Waste of paper.......2003-12-22

I think positive reviews for these books come from "Vault Staff" The book is tiny and thin, with doublespaced paragraphs to attempt to beef it up. So, each page is in this book has approximately 1/3 of a page's worth of information.

Having said that, we are treated to about 20 pages of information on the financial industry. We are treated to information like "the stock market is where shares of stock - pieces of ownership in companies - are traded every day." No mention of currency markets.

Then, we have 30 pages listing the jobs. The jobs listed include "trader" and each of one, yes one SHORT paragraph describing what they do.

Finally, a list of investment banks (Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley) with a 1 to 3 pages describing what it's like to work there (long hours).

Most of this information is common knowledge to people who have half a clue about the industry - TIAA pays less than Goldman: who knew?

One great thing about this book is the advertisements: Not just for other Vault products and sites, but for a few investment banks and recruiters - this may be be the opportunity the readers are hoping for.

    5 out of 5 stars highly recommended.......2001-10-28

I don't normally write reviews, but I just got this book and had to write. The book has detailed insider accounts of life inside every major investment banking firms, including its history, areas of specialization, and tips on the hiring and interviewing process. Highly recommended for job seekers and consultants alike.

5 out of 5 stars Essential resource for banking jobs.......2001-09-09

I found this book to be immensely helpful to distinguishing the various investment banks and commercial banks. There are also specific tips for each company on what they look for in the job interview. Particularly as wall street is downsizing, I think the Vault book provided me with the edge I needed to land my job in a tough job market.

      4 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-02-08

I'd give it 5 stars but it is not that detailed (then again it is a Nutshell). It does provide clear, plain English explanations on the major concepts in Corporate Finance and is enjoyable to read. If you like Nutshells you will like this.

I used this book and read it before I had to read the text book. it sets a nice foundation that makes the text a bit easier to understand.

5 out of 5 stars A terrific handbook to have on your shelf for a quick refresher or as supplementary reading.......2006-05-15

This is a terrific book that I wish had been available when I was taking my finance courses in b-school. The core topics in finance are well known and fairly standardized. However, students just learning can find the subject a bit counterintuitive and bewildering, no matter how normalized it becomes with familiarity. This book would be a great supplement for students struggling through huge textbooks and trying to get a handle on the basics. Of course, they should have the basic math required to execute these formulae or it won't be very helpful.

Another group that will benefit greatly from a handbook like this are people whose job is focused in an area that uses a narrow portion of the subject matter, but occasionally need or want to refresh themselves in matters not part of their everyday work. Picking this book off the shelf and reading a few pages on the relevant topic will put you right back in the swing of things.

The book has thirty clearly focused chapters that are broadly organized into four parts: Risk and Return, Valuation, Other Important Topics (such as NPV, IRR, Real Options, Corporations and Value Creation, Options, Futures and Forwards, and Currencies), and Statistical Background. Another really nice feature of the book is that, where relevant, the author includes material to help you implement the chapter material in Excel. Using spreadsheets is the way to go in finance, and this material is most useful. However, it is basic information and there are other books to help you with advanced topics and Excel. There are also a few problems provided in each chapter for you to work through and develop more intuition on the subject matter.

The author writes clearly, has chosen good intuitive symbols for the equations, and is clear where there are differences of opinion, problems with certain models, and cautions the reader on certain aspects of investment (such as currencies). Yes, this is NOT a substitute for more in depth reading on these topics, but it is a wonderful handbook and great for a quick refresher.

I am quite happy to have this on my finance shelf.

            Book Description

This business guide is an essential reference for companies who apply shareholder value concepts or economic profit measures in company analysis or decision-making. It addresses practical performance measurement issues, with numerous examples, and provides detailed steps for designing a company-specific economic profit measure. It also outlines how to incorporate economic profit into financial management practices such as investment analysis and incentive compensation. The author provides useful background details that show how economic profit links to shareholder's value, and TSR, a topic often misunderstood by finance practitioners. The book is an invaluable resource for financial managers, accounting professionals, consultants, and equity analysts who evaluate company performance or make financial decisions using value creation principles.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous Collection of Recipes and Reminiscenses.......2005-09-16

This is one of those cookbooks that are as enjoyable to read as to use. I have plenty of good, modern-day cookbooks, but lately have been seeking out older cookbooks like these, with more traditional ingredients. The stories that go along with the recipes are touching, sometimes funny. I wanted to learn how to make crock dill pickles the old fashioned way--and this book told how. This is an extremely well done, traditional cookbook.

            5 out of 5 stars A good cookbook, a great read.......2001-05-01

_From My Mother's Kitchen is half cookbook, half stories about the author's childhood. The kosher-style recipes come out tasting good and aren't too difficult (try "May's Sour Cream Coffee Cake"), although some of them take longer than this generation of cooks is willing to spend. But the real reason to have this book is for the "reminiscences". It's impossible to read the essay about pickles without eating one, and "The Joy of Being Sick in Bed" almost make me wish I had the sniffles. The same way Anne Fadiman's _Ex Libris_ is a love story about books, this is a love story about the unnofficial ceremonies surrounding food.

                              Description:
This paper offers an informal theory of a special sort of poverty trap, one in which multiple dynamic equilibria exist simultaneously at multiple (micro, meso and/or macro) scales of analysis and are self-reinforcing through feedback effects. Small adjustments at any one of these levels are unlikely to move the system away from its dominant, stable dynamic equilibrium. Governments, markets and communities are simultaneously weak in places characterized by fractal poverty traps. No unit operates at a high-level equilibrium in such a system. All seem simultaneously trapped in low-level equilibria. The fractal poverty traps formulation suggests four interrelated strategic emphases for poverty reduction strategies.

                                      Book Description

This biography reveals the lost history of the life of the 1920s Black female international superstar. Mills was lionized by the crowned heads in Europe and opened doors for generations of Black female stars from Lena Horne to Diana Ross. Although her career and shows changed the nature of Black entertainment, and thereby the wider American popular culture, she was largely forgotten in later years. Anyone who wants to understand the history of Black entertainment from Bert Williams to Michael Jackson and, by implication, the history of American popular culture, needs to understand the ways in which Florence Mills changed the rules forever.

                                      5 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 4.5) - A legend before our time.......2005-11-09

Suffice it to say that there are few individuals who have ever heard of Florence Mills, and that includes some resolute jazz enthusiasts. But through much persistence Bill Egan has changed that and has illuminated our awareness of this entertainment legend. Irish-born Egan, while doing research on jazz great Duke Ellington, came across Florence Mills' name, the woman who inspired Duke's recording of 'Black Beauty'; his tribute to Florence, a fellow Washingtonian.

She was born Florence Winfrey on January 25, 1896 in a middle class section of Washington, D.C., but hard times forced the family to move to a less desirable section of the city known as Goat Alley. Florence began her exodus from the Alley at the tender age of three and by the time she was seven, she was supplementing the family's income by performing in the bordellos where her mother did laundry. Florence and her two sisters traveled the globe displaying their talents and gaining prominence in a world dominated by people who were different, by race and by gender. They did the chitterling circuit long before it was given the name.

Florence opened the door for generations of female stars as she was able to break through white barriers. She performed before crowned dignitaries in Europe and earned the title 'darling of the diplomats', was listed in the New York Times as a dignitary herself, and helped to redefine the entertainment world. Florence's untimely death in 1927 created an unexpected outpouring of grief. Although she was never recorded, and for the most part was nearly forgotten decades later, she is an icon in show business. To understand the history of the industry, from Bert Williams to popular culture, you need to understand how Florence Mills changed the rules.

HARLEM JAZZ QUEEN explores the association between Florence and the early beginnings of jazz and ragtime, her keen intelligence and strong social conscience, and her phenomenal success as the first black international female superstar. It also documents her association with classical music with noted composers William Grant Still and Constant Lambert. This is a history that was too long coming, but one that will captivate and enlighten readers.

Contributing to Scarecrow's 'Studies in Jazz' series comes Bill Egan's Florence Mills: Harlem Jazz Queen, a unique biography of the African American entertainer of the 1920s from childhood to her death at age 31. Mills' achievements opened the doors for generations of black female stars from Lena Horne to modern times, and chapters recount how Mills was able to break through the white barriers to become a star in her own right. She even became famous enough to be listed in a New York Times list of dignitaries sailing aboard a vessel, and helped redefine the world of entertainment as a whole, which was formerly divided between 'black' and 'white' entertainment.
