          Book Description

The launch of Nick Stellino's "Cucina Amore" on public television stations marked the debut of a new kind of television chef and a new style of cooking show. The authentic trattoria setting and casual, relaxed atmosphere allow viewers to feel as if they are actually dining with their host while being entertained with stories about his beloved grandmother, Nonna Maria, his perfectionist father, Don Vincenzo, his mother, Massimilliana, and his brother and partner-in-mischief, Mario--all the while learning how to re-create the authentic Italian dishes he was taught to make at home.

This companion cookbook, Cucina Amore, brings you all the warmth, love, and culinary delights that have made Nick Stellino so successful. Here you will find one hundred simple and delicious recipes--ranging from Caponata to Wild Mushroom Salad, Ossobuco to Country Style Roasted Potatoes, and Sicilian Cheesecake to Tiramisu--along with all of Nick's wonderful family memories, and the secrets he has learned both at home and as a professional chef to make the cooking both simple and foolproof.

And for the first time in any cookbook, we have included a CD of delightful Italian dinner music to inspire the cook's creativity and enhance the diners' pleasure. For Nick Stellino, cooking for others is a joy and a celebration, and with this music he is inviting all home chefs, their families, and their guests to join in the festivities.

With the versatility and perennial popularity of Italian food, and the growing awareness of the Mediterranean diet as a healthy way of eating, Cucina Amore is a cookbook you will turn to again and again.

5 out of 5 stars My most used cook book.......2004-12-21

Although this book is filled with overly sentimental side bars it is the recipes that count and they are excellent and the vast majority are easy to prepare. Every Christmas I bring a dish from this book and it gets rave reviews. Like Molto Mario he shows that a few simple fresh ingredients combined in the right way can create a magical dish (Now I sound like him!) I do not understand the person who gave this book one star. Buy this book if you love Italian food.

          5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Cookbook.......2004-04-06

A friend of mine recommended this cookbook to me. She definitely did me a favor. Most of the recipes are easy to make using a handful of ingredients and the results are excellent. The pork tenderloin stuffed with prosciutto and provolone reminded me and my husband of food we enjoyed while in Tuscany a few years back. Simplicity with good quality ingredients is the name of the game in this cookbook. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A good investment for pasta lovers!.......2003-10-24

I received this book as a wedding gift 8 years ago and have tried many of the recipes. They are all great and easy to make. Some recipes sound a little complicated, but they really aren't. I just made the smoked salmon pasta and it was delish! It's the only recipe book that i treasure! Highly recommend.

          1 out of 5 stars review f cucina amore.......2002-12-04

I think that Nick Stellino has a wonderful personality. It is entertaining to watch his show on TV.The recipes look and sound so good. However, when you actually try to make them from this book, the results are disappointing. I just threw out 1 pound of expensive shrimp. The pasta withshrimp was bland. The shrimp turned out rubbery as cooked according to his directions. Another dish, broccoli rabe and sausage turned out tasting like hospital food. His pot roast was too salty and watery, although the meat was tender. His pasta sauce was not quite right. If you can't get pasta sauce right then how are you going to have success with a book of italian recipes.Don't waste your tie making recipes that don't work. My book will just sit on the shelf for now. I really do like the guy and I hate to have to trash this book.

5 out of 5 stars All easy, all delicious!.......1999-12-30

I've owned this book for about 4 years and I return to it time and again for sure-fire Italian recipes. The bruschetta is always a hit with the balsamic vinegar, and a must-try is the three pepper salad. I serve it religiously to my dinner guests and have always received compliments.

I usually like pictures to accompany the recipes, but this book doesn't need it. The antecdotes are enjoyable and give a personal touch to the cooking. I haven't seen his show in ages, but I hope he's still inspiring people to cook. I haven't bought his next book, but I bet it has the same results.

          5 out of 5 stars Southern Italian.......2007-01-19

I gave this cookbook to my husband for Christmas and he loves it. We visited Mandola's Winery just south of Austin, TX, and were so impressed we had dinner at Mandola's restuarant in Austin that evening on our way back home. Both are delightful and are fully reflected in the cookbook showing how you can mesh 2 totally different cultures (Italian and Southern American) in food and have a very tasty mix.

          4 out of 5 stars great find..........2006-05-07

I generally buy my books for the dessert recipes. This was no exception. It has some dolci that I find interesting and unique. I started with the Lemon Rosemary Pound Cake and it was fabulous. It has a fluffy moist tender crumb that we swooned over. Well worth the price of the book.

I also tried a couple of other dishes and was not impressed...but still know there is a lot of great cooking to do from this book.

5 out of 5 stars Best gumbo I've ever made.......2005-01-24

I have to confess to a huge crush on Damian Mandola, but after making his gumbo, I may be in love. I followed the recipe exactly except for the crab (too much $, so I used 8 oz. of packaged crabment) and I added andouille sausage because my cooking's biggest fan loves it. The time it takes to make the dark roux he says to use is worth it. The recipe is fabulous. I haven't made anything else in the cookbook yet, but the directions are beautifully thorough; the photographs and quotations from the guys are delightful.

3 out of 5 stars Italian-Inspired Creativity in the Kitchen.......2003-03-11

An expansion of Carrabba's Italian Restaurant opened in New Hampshire about six months ago. Sitting down for dinner, I was struck by the authenticity of the food. Thick, spicy sausages were served with strips of colorful peppers and onions, flavored richly with a good, pressed olive oil. I knew that I couldn'g go wrong with the cookbook written by Johnny and Damian Mandola.

This book is accented with full-color photographs. The recipes are organized by course: Appetizers, Soups and Salads, Side Dishes, Entrees, Pasta & Pizza, and Desserts. The book also includes a Foreward, Introduction, Basics, and Techniques.

The recipes are not limited to Italian Cuisine. While you will (of coruse) find recipes for Sicilain-Style Tomatoes, you will also find recipes for Cornbread and even a Trio-Layer Cake.

Each recipe includes a number of servings, ingredients list, step-by-step procedures on how to prepare the recipes, serving suggesions, and quotes from the authors about the origins and tastes of the recipes.

The Chefs of Cucina Amore, companion to the television show of the same name, stands on its own as an entertaining Italian cookbook. Most of its 100-plus dishes suit the modern palate while also being true to their regional Italian roots. In the TV shows, four Italian cooking experts, singly and in pairs, cook with host Victor Schiavelli, a food writer and actor. Schiavelli, in the book's introduction, gives you the unique flavor of each chef's personality. Faith Willinger is known for her devotion to the simple food of Tuscany. Nancy Harmon Jenkins also cooks Tuscan, but here she goes beyond Italy at times, making a kind of Greek ratatouille called soufiko. Joe Simone, a chef from Boston, adds exuberance and more sophisticated flavors in his Butternut Squash Soup with croutons of crushed Amaretti and sautéed prosciutto. Finally, master baker Nick Malgieri offers savory baked foccacia, classic sweets like cannoli and tiramisu, and luscious Neapolitan Torta Caprese, a superrich chocolate cake. This book will bring home many of the TV show's pleasures and all of its delicious food, and reading it will expand your understanding of Italian food as well as your repertoire. --Dana Jacobi

This is a fine book to go with a fine series!!! Everyone of the cooks in this book are the finest around. And I have prepared about 75% of the recipes found in this book and I gotta tell you, I didn't know I could cook so good!!Vincent Schiavelli really surprised me with this series and he really brought the top Chefs in Italian Cooking and gave you an idea of what REAL Italian food is all about. I can only hope for another book and series.

          5 out of 5 stars That's Amore!.......2000-05-29

Fans of the PBS series will adore this book because it brings the show to life right in your own kitchen. People who've never heard of the show will love the book because it's one of the best Italian cookbooks you'll ever find.

Four highly skilled and well-trained chefs lead us through a variety of fabulous foolproof dishes, and they do not lead us astray.

Each recipe is accompanied by a beautiful full page color photograph, as well as a helpful and interesting anecdotal notation about the main ingredients in the recipe. The recipe itself is clear, methodical, and leaves no room for error. I've tried at least two dishes from each chef and have never been disappointed.

Oddly enough, I caught only one episode of the PBS series but I was so impressed, I had to get the book immediately! I am a serious cookbook collector and have been disappointed many times. The Chefs of Cucina Amore is a definite winner. It's a delight to look at and is consistently rewarding to cook from. I highly recommend this book to anyone who truly savors exceptional Italian cooking.

This treatise is a good resource for estate planning practitioners. Henkel wisely covers a very wide range of topics and provides a decent amount of planning advice. This is not a book for a layperson as the amount of estate planning knowledge taught in law school is covered in about 6 (out of 55) chapters. The rest of the treatise is advanced material. Note that Henkel updates this treatise at least annually.

2 out of 5 stars Too dated to be useful..........2000-05-27

Perhaps a sign of the hi-tech times, this book was published in 1996 and is now so dated it is of very limited value. If you read newspapers, or some financial magazines, I think you're already well past what is offered here. One facet of the book I actually found a little irritating is the tendency of the author to use copious amounts of filler between the tidbits of useful information.

4 out of 5 stars Insightful, worth getting, but not a mechanical formula.......1999-04-05

The book doesn't give too much in the way of simple formulae, but does give a lot of insight that the reader can use to help develop an investment strategy re technology. Some of it is a little dated, but I would recommend reading the whole book, not just a couple of chapters.

The following (long-ish) quote from chapter 8 I regard as very profound and chapters 8 & 9 worth re-reading and ponderingh awhile: "I would avoid placing bets on any side in the compatibility wars. We have entered a period in computer technology ....... when monopolies and even profitable pricing are becoming more and more difficult to sustain....... The outcome, which is compatibility, is a foregone conclusion. favor the stocks of those companies - and they are not necessarily computer or networking companies - who recognise at the strategic level that the intersection of data and communictaions networks simultaneously creates a broad new market and a wholly new product. And that this product, which is a supernet, is coming into the world like an avalanche".

I regard this as a profound insight, and is precisely what is happening on the internet at this moment. Understanding chapters 8 & 9, and reviewing the markets in its light should help considerably in understanding the current craziness of the 'net and possibly in identifying the next winners.

The book isn't full of correct predictions and winners, but the basic insghts are still valid.

3 out of 5 stars OK Book But there are Better.......1999-03-17

There are tons of these books and this one is pretty good but "Gorilla Game: Investors Guide..." is better. I would recommend getting that book before you get this one.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for those who are looking into the future.......1998-10-23

the author tells you great insights into finding technology companies with a potential of laying the foundation of great networks. As far a electronic networks, they will continue to gain expandability with existence of internet. Good penetration into the market by hi-tech companies is extremelty crucial for viability and strong revenues. Future communication will be very different, and messages will have to be protected by security. Author also mentions to detect a company with protected and secured network in order to maintain high profitability. Good insights into the tech field. I am glad I bought the book. It increased my awareness of the technology and communication industry.

            5 out of 5 stars Surprising chapter.......1998-05-07

In the handful of new books on the subject of tech stocks, this one came out first. People quote it, argue with it, imitate it, paraphrase it and even try to attack it (see below). The author was evidently inside Compaq during their startup. He has a way of putting the reader right down on the ground in Texas on a sweltering summer night, drinking a beer with the engineers, poring over IBM's blueprints and schematics on the eve of the great clone wars. He understands at first hand why Compaq became the fastest growing company in history while their 150 competitors went right out of business. It's an important technology investing lesson. I also enjoyed a surprising chapter called Smart players, Dull winners. It says bright people have an especially hard time beating the stock market, and has some ideas about what they can do about it. The book is a primary source.

4 out of 5 stars Provides a broad overview of taxation in various societies over the centuries.......2005-09-26

This is a very interesting book that will probably give you a better understanding of the ways in which taxation has been used in the past. As in our time, the purposes have been to raise revenue for the government, but they were also used for other purposes. They were used to keep a given people in servitude to another, to shape social policy, to control markets, and so on.

The title of the book notes that taxes can be used for good and for evil. When used judiciously, the public can benefit from our shared contribution to certain good projects. What those are depends on what a given society values, and that is why democratically elected governments and therefore democratically controlled taxation are of real benefit. Unfortunately, we are moving away from such taxes to certain kinds of indirect fees and countless other hidden taxes. These have always ended up badly for a society, as they likely will for us.

However, being a republic, if we become educated about these things and demand our government sweep things clean, we can force it done. We should become more educated about these things and exert more control over government expenditures and on the way revenues are raised to cover them.

This is not a perfect book. Some of the anecdotes are told a bit glibly and others are shaded a bit to make a point. However, you will get the idea. Just don't run out and think that what you read here is settled historical fact. There are often subtleties that are left out in order to make a stronger point. Even with this caveat, this is still a useful book for everyone to read.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for every citizen.......2002-09-12

It's unfortunate that so many American citizens are guilty of imposing willful ignorance upon themselves, otherwise our political leaders would be subject to a tighter leash. Charles Adams wrote this most informative book in the early 1990's and it has resonated with me ever since. He covers the history of taxation from the time of the first recording of history. Indeed the Rosetta stone was a tax document, and like the rest of the book it's a follow-the-money theory of history.

As Adams points out, figurative "mafia families", who have always run countries, have managed to compensate their armies by taxing the productive capacity of their subjects. Adam's central theme is that governments who overtax their citizens are nearly always "hoisted on their own petard." He cites ancient Greece, Rome, indeed governments from all over the world. His end game is to warn America's political elite that they've gone too far in a game where all great cultures have collapsed from within i.e. rotted at their moral core. And, he's right!

This book has many pages of cites and a long bibliography. It's a bit repetitious to read as he covers so many examples to make his point, but it's well worth the attention of every citizen if only they would spare the time.

5 out of 5 stars A sweeping historical narrative of taxation since Babylon.......2001-05-03

I read this book sometime ago, but still recall it quite vividly. For good and evil- taxes seem like there here to stay. Adams, a tax attorney by trade, offers an intriguing narrative history of taxation since ancient times. Moreover, he illustrates how their is a fine line of how much sustained taxation a civilization can endure before it collapses, (hence the Laffer Curve.) He points out the pitfalls the befall ancient Rome and Egypt when they engaged in confiscatory taxation policies.

Additionally, he shows how high taxes feed a vicious cycle of statism, corruption and more taxes and economic collapse as demagogues rise to the power. Indeed, this book makes it clear that taxation has "the power to destroy" as it has brought mighty empires to their knees. (Granted, some might say its the effect, not the cause of a debased culture. Morality and tradition play a role as well in the collapse of civilizations.)

Also recommend: When Nations Die by Jim Black.

5 out of 5 stars Many of the other reviews miss the point.......2000-10-10

Many of the reviews posted are so obviously biased for and against taxes or big governement as to make their review worthless.

The book has 38 chapters, nearly every one discusses taxation in a different society starting in ancient Egypt and disucsses taxation by the Greeks, Roman, Russians, French, English, and finally Americans among others. The point is not that taxation is bad, but that corrupt systems of taxation are bad and that taxation above a certain level is bound to fail since people will find ways to avoid it. This is not made up history, there are 23 pages of endnotes and a twelve page bibliography.

There are a number of illustrations, as well as, well written stories from the Rosetta Stone (it was actually a grant of tax immunity); to how Muslims taxed infidels more in order to get them to convert; to Lady Godiva (she made her ride get the King, her husband, to remit the heavy taxes he imposed on the Coventry);, to taxation as one cause of the Civil War that few are aware of (there are 16 endnotes on this chapter alone, many from articles written during the Civil War).

This is a facinating book that should be required reading for every member of Congress.

                    Book Description

At twenty-five, Orson Welles (1915-1985) directed, co-wrote, and starred in Citizen Kane, widely considered the best film ever made. But Welles was such a revolutionary filmmaker that he found himself at odds with the Hollywood studio system. His work was so far ahead of its time that he never regained the wide popular following he had once enjoyed as a young actor-director on the radio.

Frustrated by Hollywood and falling victim to the postwar blacklist, Welles departed for a long European exile. But he kept making films, functioning with the creative freedom of an independent filmmaker before that term became common and eventually preserving his independence by funding virtually all his own projects. Because he worked defiantly outside the system, Welles has often been maligned as an errant genius who squandered his early promise.

Film critic Joseph McBride, who acted in Welles's legendary unfinished film The Other Side of the Wind, provocatively challenges conventional wisdom about Welles's supposed creative decline. McBride is the first author to provide a comprehensive examination of the films of Welles's artistically rich yet little-known later period. During the 1970s and '80s, Welles was breaking new aesthetic ground, experimenting as adventurously as he had throughout his career.

McBride's friendship and collaboration with Welles and his interviews with those who knew and worked with the director make What Ever Happened to Orson Welles? a portrait of rare intimacy and insight. Reassessing Welles's final period in the context of his entire life and work, McBride's revealing portrait of this great film artist will change the terms of how Orson Welles is regarded.

5 out of 5 stars Orson Welles Book.......2007-07-01

I have always been a fan of Orson Welles on radio and television. Having collected a ton of radio broadcasts on CD and audio cassette and having watched most of his movies, I appreciate the genius of his work. I picked up a copy of this book recently and am amazed at the amount of research put into it. An aspect of Welles rarely discussed is his magic career. At the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention this September in Aberdeen, Maryland, I plan to attend the presentation about Orson Welles and his magic career so I can watch rare footage and films with Welles, and get an even deeper insight to his trickery. Book comes recommended.

While I might be biased because a many parts of this book included stories about my father, Gary Graver, this is not something you want to miss out on if you have any interest in Orson Welles or the inner workings of the Hollywood movie industry. I knew Orson when I was a young boy and teenager during the time my father worked with him, but my memories are nothing compared to the vivid details and thoroughness of Joe's writings.

This book taught me a lot about a man whom I admired and feared. He was rather scary from the perspective of a ten year old, but he often took time to have me sit with him while he taught me card tricks. I am so grateful that these stories are now available for everyone to read. Thank you Joe for your commitment in documenting what no one else ever has and sharing these wonderful stories.

Mention the name Orson Welles and his most famous involvement - with the radio scare 'War of the Worlds' - immediately comes to mind; but for a deeper understanding of Welles' life and career you need What Ever Happened to Orson Welles?: A Portrait of an Independent Career. His later projects were largely self-financed and erratically distributed, but film critic and biographer Joseph McBride has a personal familiarity with Welles from previous projects worked on with him and here shows how the Hollywood studio system forced Welles out of the industry. Its value thus is twofold: as a biography for Welles fans, and as a history of film industry operations and politics.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Great Director's Independent Years.......2006-11-06

Everyone knows that Orson Welles made _Citizen Kane_, possibly the most audacious and most analyzed movie to come out of Hollywood. And then what happened? He had been called a "boy genius", having made the movie (co-written, directed, and starred) when he was but twenty-five years old, but within a decade the term was used with sarcasm, and Walter Kerr wrote that Welles had become "an international joke, and possibly the youngest living has-been." Welles had been knocked down, and in the view of many, he never got up. Certainly, he never made anything like a _Kane_ again, but that isn't really fair: no one has. It is true that he never produced the sorts of films that were Hollywood-popular, but he did not at all disappear. Joseph McBride, a film historian who knew Welles, has answered the title question in his book _What Ever Happened to Orson Welles? A Portrait of an Independent Career_ (The University Press of Kentucky). The answer, quite simply, is that Welles worked and worked for decades in film, writing scripts, making movies, and (perhaps because few would bankroll him) doing things his own way. It's a sad story, in many ways. No one could doubt Welles's genius, and there are so many "if only" episodes in this book that it is often a depressing account. But Welles was not a tragic figure; he reflected years later that he might have made a mistake in staying in films (rather than, say, returning to the theater in which he had previously made his mark). But he would not have had it any other way: "I'm just in love with making movies," he said, and indeed, it was only death that stopped him.

McBride necessarily describes the problems that beset Welles immediately after _Kane_, when Welles could no longer get anything close to the full control of a film which he had practiced on his first movie. Still wanting to make movies, he left Hollywood to continue in Europe. McBride makes the case that contributing to Welles's decision for self-exile was his fear that he would be called to testify in the Communist witch-hunts. Welles loved shooting films and he especially loved editing them (as anyone who has seen _Kane_ can tell). There are plenty of pictures Welles worked on whose footage has been lost, but many others have the footage saved by fans or by creditors, and they frequently propose bringing out a finished version, hiring someone to pull the scenes together into a finished movie even so long after Welles's death in 1985. One producer mentioned she'd like to see a particular film screened not as an unfinished work by Welles, but as a film the way he might have finished it; but she says, "Finished by whom? Who can you substitute for Orson Welles?"

McBride does not go deeply into Welles's inability to finish things. Certainly it was attributable in a large part to Welles's way of skin-of-his-teeth filmmaking, whether or not it was some deep-set psychological disability. Welles could have written a magnificent autobiography, but when he got advances for such a work, he always returned them to the publishers. McBride writes, "Welles was deeply ambivalent about reminiscing, perhaps because he would have had to address issues he usually found too painful or delicate, such as his sexuality, his family life and some of his more traumatic experiences in Hollywood." Some of the stories of incompletion here, however, are extraordinary. His finished negative of _The Merchant of Venice_ was simply stolen from Welles's production office in Rome. The Iranians held funding for his meditation on filmmaking in the sixties, _The Other Side of the Wind_, and then the Shah was overthrown. "It's hard to imagine a movie career more littered with sensational catastrophes than mine," Welles admitted. He seldom admitted that he was the source of the less sensational catastrophes; a cameraman who worked with Welles late in his career said that Don Quixote was never completed because Welles "moved around too much, stuff got lost." For sensational and unsensational reasons, the losses recounted here are staggering. Nonetheless, McBride shows that they cannot be blamed, as some critics say, on Welles's being lazy or dilatory. The decades were filled with work for him, and he was pounding out a manuscript for a brand-new project on the night he died. As an independent filmmaker, Welles may have never fully lived up to his potential, but with a record of films that includes _Touch of Evil_ or the supremely weird _Lady from Shanghai_, his pattern of incompletion must be a minor sin. Much of McBride's personal account comes from his being an actor in _The Other Side of the Wind_ (of course, never finished) as were such droppable names as John Huston and Dennis Hopper. McBride's story won't re-make Welles's post-1950 career, but it isn't just a story of loss and lost opportunities; it is one of real movie history and at least some genuine artistic success.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Story behind a Misunderstood Talent........2006-10-07

This book's title aptly describes its critical task in taking issue with the misleading images perpetuated by certain critics and journalists concerning the significance of Orson Welles as a major cinematic talent who developed, rather than declined, after making CITIZEN KANE. The author had the benfit several years of contact with the director before he died as well as the opportunity to appear before the camera in the still unreleased THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND.

McBride has been engaged in Welles's scholarship since his early 1970s monograph dealing with the director and is in a good position to promote the case that Welles was more of what we would describe as an independent film director rather than a Hollywood figure. This book covers similar territory to the first two volumes of Simon Callow's biographical project but has the advantage of extending beyond the final chapter of HELLO AMERICANS to document Welles work in Europe and his return to Hollywood up to his eventual death. It is also a much more balanced work than either of Callow's two volumes by avoiding tendencies towards cheap character assassination (mercifully limited in Callow's second volume but still present in certain instances) to document a person who was both a genius and a difficult person.

The key argument of this book is that the director was more sinned against than anything else. His Hollywood career was deliberately sabotaged by studion executives and he was under surveillance by the FBI for some 15 years. Despite that, Welles never gave in but directed several fascinating films and worked on others that still remain to be completed up to the very moment of his life. Welles was a fascinating character, a product of the New Deal Cultural Front, and a cinematic innovator in many ways. He left a legacy of completed American and European films as well as other works that challenged the boundaries of mainstream cinema. McBride delivers this argument in an eloquent manner and documents his sources meticulously.

This is one of the best biographies that has appeared so far on the subject. It aims to reveal the truth concerning Welles's real creative challenge to the establishment which several notorious treatments have attempted to deny. McBride writes in a very engaging manner and makes a strong case for the reassessment of the legacy of Orson Welles as one of America's major talents of the twentieth century. It is a really important work demanding wide readership and respect for its very valuable achievement.

The University of Kentucky Press also deserves congratulations for publishing this work along with the recent books on Cecil B. De Mille, Thomas Dixon and Peter Lorre which are all instrumental in rewriting film history and refuting so-called standard interpretations.

4 out of 5 stars Milk Horses is first and foremost the tale of a writer........1998-11-11

While Milk Horses is first and foremost a memoir, it is also the tale of a writer who knew she wanted to be a writer at an early age. She struggled to do so with little encouragement and with scant mentors who, on the surface, could hardly be called champions. Miss Gostelow, Newth's piano teacher, was one such mentor. True to the humanity evident throughout the memoir Newth, however, saw Miss Gostelow as a "person of strength." The final chapters answer the questions posed in the beginning of the memoir: Where is the young author going and how is she going to get there?
