I own many, many cookbooks, but The Recipe Encyclopedia is my favorite. My sister-in-law was visiting once and she fell in love with it. So, today I'm ordering one for her. It's a surprise and I know she'll cherish it as much as I do mines. There is a recipe for anyone of any culture. The recipes are easy to follow and the information contained is invaluable. This book is the greatest.

I got this book because of its appealing presentation. In addition, when I got it, it was on sale at the Borders book store at McCarthy Ranch in Milpitas, CA for only $7.99! I like how there are recipes for classic dishes of different cultures, like Irish, Thai, Mexican, Jewish, Chinese, Japanese etc. There are recipes for different kinds of pasta, salads, pastries, quiche, sausages, casseroles and more. Overall, there is a great variety of recipes from different cultures and categories of food in addition to the educational encyclopedic section on the side of every page of food names and more. Pictures are alos very good. I haven't cooked a thing from the cookbook yet, however, but I would get it just to have it.

I originally bought this book as a gift for a family member opening a Bed & Breakfast and after flipping through it, realized I Just Had To Have One For Myself! A Book You Want To EAT !.......1999-11-28

I have taught for many years in a culinary school as a restaurant service professional .I have hundreds of cookbooks , some of which I like and others I do not. The appealing qualities that I look for are a) Simplicity of Use b)Visual Appeal c)Creativity d)Depth of Information e)Recipe Quality ..to name a few.

I am appalled by the number of cookbooks that have very unappetizing photographs of food , whether due to the poor quality of the photography or the bland and uncreative presentation. The purpose of a cookbook is to stimulate the reader to want to experiment with cuisine and as any cook knows ,people cook with their eyes as well as their tastebuds . It is for this reason that one of my main criteria for a cookbook is that it be good enough to eat !

Since buying THE RECIPE ENCYCLOPEDIA I just am having hard time putting the book DOWN or leaving the kitchen . This book now ranks ,in my mind , as one of the best cookbooks I have ever seen.

This wonderful book is a treasure trove of CONTEMPORARY recipes and information . As a restaurant professional at a progresive culinary school I have a sophisticated taste and my eyes is an educated one. I have seen the potential for both great food and great presenttaion. This book makes me want to cook . The visuals are authentic and stimulating. The recipes are not only succinct but also arranged in interesting categories that make so much sense with added featured sections (e.g. Foccacia , noodles , cheesecakes).

Running down the outside edge is an alphabetical encyclopedia , including visuals , that is not only very engaging but also extremely informative.

This book DEMANDS your attention to the extent that I feel inexplicably drawn to open it ..hence it lies on my kitchen island at all times.

The pages are all of heavy protected glossy stock and I think the publishers made an excellent decision to publish it in a flexible paperback form.

The recipe selection could easily be said to be representative of a cross section of the best restaurants' fare.Both ethnic and traditional selections covering the full spectrum of the menu. This is a cookbook for those that live for good food.

It is a rare book that is able to keep my attention so well. I feel that this book is so engaging that I WANT to read it , as I feel compelled and invited to DISCOVER and EXPLORE and LEARN.

This is a book that you would HONOR your best friends and loved ones by presenting it to them as a gift but most of all it is a book that , once you have explored it , will send you to your local markets and then into your kitchen , eager to cook .

Intrigued by the title of this book, I bought it and carefully read it through. A very wide range of investments and companies are covered and every investor should find something that interests them.

However, I would only use this book as a part of a comprehensive investment research plan. No book can guarantee success and indeed this one does not claim to. But it is a worthwhile read and can positively contribute to investment decisions.

I have owned this book since the early 90's and have benefitted greatly from its content. I found the application for a trademark inside and used it to successfully obtain my first trademark. I am purchasing a copy for my 13 year old nephew who has just opened an on-line clothing store. He too will use the trademark section to protect his product name and learn basic business principles.

The ILO is at it again.... do as I say, and not as I do.......2004-07-24

The moralizing tone of this book is its principal weakness, and that too, in the glaring face of contradiction for the ILO does not uphold the standards it so easily preaches to the world about. Why a whole book was written to reiterate points humanity subscribes to in theory, is beyond logic. On crucial issues the book makes only passing reference. Instead the fault is placed squarely at the door of immoral capitalists controlling the rules of the global market game. Issues like good governance or the failure of African leadership and endemic corruption on the continent are not touched. The ILO itself is drowning in irrelevance, diverting enormous amounts of money to host high profile Summits that will in the end make little difference to the creation of decent work on the African continent. Perhaps then, it wouldn't be a bad thing for the organization to practice what it haughtily preaches to the world. Those who have passed through its Geneva HQ know all too well, the complete chaos that rules, the total lack of respect for the rights this book goes on and on about. The organization is just ripe for a Farenheit 9/11 exposure... and this book deserves to be quoted in the opening scene.

Perhaps... one of the most unique books ever written about Abraham Lincoln or any other president. Honestly Abe A Cartoon Expose' of Abe Lincoln is a satirical and historical analysis of the man beneath the stove pipe hat by Lincoln impersonator Charles Brame. Combined with the efforts of Edgar "Sol" Soller, Brame compiled a political cartoon biography of one of the and most prolific writers in history. For more than 22 years, Brame has been on the stage as Abe Lincoln, both courtesy of his resemblance to the president and his Master of Arts in American History from the University of Missouri. (He) has simply pilfered scenes from his own act and merged them with the talents of an acclaimed political cartoonist to bring his show to the bookshelves. This method proves entertaining and informative with each page offering a different insight into Lincoln's life before, during and after his presidency. What is most refreshing is Brame's treatment of the more interesting accounts of his life. There is certainly nothing new in Honestly Abe for scholars who have read the myriad of words printed about Lincoln. But for those who have never had the patience to wade through a 400-page text about the president to discover interesting anecdotes and stories, this book will be an eye opener. For example, Lincoln was the first president to sport a beard, the only one to ever hold a patent, and the first to have (small) children in the White House. This led to some uproarious occasions, especially during a meeting with a group of society ladies when his son Tad thundered through the hallway pulled by a team of his pet goats harnessed to a chair. Each fact is accompanied by one of Soller's detailed illustrations. Lincoln was also the king of presidential writers. He produced more words than his favorite author, William Shakespeare....This from a man who by sheer determination (and a nasty habit of reading everything out loud) overcame his poor early education. He was perhaps the first president to champion the necessity of education across the nation. Lincoln's life and exploits are still an education and Honestly Abe is an enjoyable look at Lincoln 101.

As a Lincoln enthusiast and teacher I found Charlie B's book outstanding. The writing is entertaining, informative, and exudes a love for Lincoln. The cartoon graphics and printing are excellent. I found neither misprints nor factual errors.Overall the treatment of Lincoln is charming without being debasing. It is very readable. I wish I could produce a book as enjoyable as this one.

A great expedition from the warmth of your own reading chair.......2002-07-03

Arctic Son keeps the reader "involved" and teaches you about surviving the Arctic North. I learned it is not something I would like to do, with months upon months of frozen everything and darkness. This book helps you to appreciate what you have and the warmth of your own home! It is nice for this authro to write about her adventures in the Arctic and share this true life tale with us, the readers.

I recommend reading this if you are interested in exploring the world around you, especially the wild and frigid Arctic North.

Just as Good as Arctic Daughter.......2001-03-01

I couldn't wait to read this book after having enjoyed Arctic Daughter. The two adventure stories stand alone as exceptional works -- not of literature -- but of true adventure stories. I found Arctic Son to be true to Jean Aspen, the woman and adventurer. It was real in content, description of events, feelings and thoughts, and it allowed me to live out my own dream of building a cabin in Alaska without leaving home. Additionally, Arctic Son proved that even after a family comes along, adventure is still attainable and very rewarding to the soul of all. At the same time, the mental and physical risks and costs of such high adventure are made quite clear. This book was just as good, if not sweeter, than the first book. Also, it isn't necessary to read both books sequentially to understand events or motivation.

Loved this book and Arctic Daughter also..........2000-12-20

I first heard of Jean Aspen when a condensed version of her first book, Arctic Daughter, appeared in a Reader's Digest. I have since acquired, with difficulty, my own copy of that book. I later located Arctic Son in a used bookstore. I felt the point of both books was not to elevate the art of literature, but rather to convey the life-shaping experiences of her years in the arctic, using literature as the medium. I understand Jean and Tom filmed portions of their time in Alaska during the "Arctic Son" period, and I would love to locate a copy of that, if possible. Any help out there???? At any rate, both books are great to curl up with and dream about during a long winter.

Good story, fair writing, new-age philosophy, poor editing.......1999-12-31

I love reading about Alaska, and I wanted to love this book, but while the story was fascinating, the writing was tepid and the philosophy was a bit adolescent.

There is a passage in which she describes the arctic light and the way it reminded her of classical music: to most of us, this might mean Bartok, Poulenc or Debussy; she thought of George Winston.

It wasn't a travesty, merely a disappointment.

An insult to the Queen.......2002-01-22

Mahalia Jackson was said to indeed be a very suspicious woman. That is why she had peculiar habits such as accepting cash only for performances. Even the author testifies to her distrust. Why therefore even if some of the things said were true I don't think that Mahalia would have revealed her faults and shortcomings to man whom she knew very little about. The book creates an evil picture of Mahalia. It would break the heart of any Mahalia Jackson fan. The author also claims to have been friendly with Mahalia's godson - Brother John Sellers, who was one of the interviewees for the book and who supposedly helped to degrade Mahalia. If Brother John did indeed love Halie like the mother he never had, I don't think that he would stoop so low as to want to defame her for the sake of a novel.

I do agree with the critic above who says that there are alot of wrong facts stated stated in the book. Here are some corrections that need to be made.

Mahalia was born in 1911.
Her mother had only sisters.
She went to Chicago at age 16.
Jules never mentioned Mahalia's first recording date in 1937 for Decca Records

She divorced her first husband in 1941
She toured Europe with Big Bill Broonzey in 1952 not 1955
She played herself in the movie, Imitation of Life - she was also in four other films.

She received her first Grammy Award in 1962
She received another in 1963, a Grammy Lifetime Acheivement Award in 1972 and another Grammy in 1976.

She did not start courting her second husband until the early 60's.
She did not perform in a Pink Organza gown in the 1970 Newport Jazz Festival - it was sea blue/turquoise with diamond-like sequins along her collar, center and cuffs of her sleeve.
There are other misinfo's that he is guilty of printing...shame on you Mr. Schwerin.

Inaccurate "facts".......1999-09-04

Schwerin apparently had a unique relationship with Mahalia Jackson, one that offered him insight into her actions and motivations. Unfortunately, he had his own agenda, and it seems to have precluded him from getting to the facts. For example, he comments on Mahalia's role in Imitation of Life, and one wonders whether he ever saw the movie. His inaccuracies make the reader question passages of the book about areas of her life that are not so well known by the public. His writing is careless.
