If I could write a cookbook / lifestyle manual this is what I would want it to be. Very informative bands of information across the bottom of the pages in the front half of the book put all the bits and pieces of info that you have read before all in one place. The menu suggestions are great and all of the recipies work! Even the ones for high fiber muffins and loaves turn out well - the muffins are a good size not the small heavy ones that you sometimes get from "healthy, high fiber" recipies. Information on flax benefits is excellent.

You definitely need this in your library.

This book will teach you how to buy and sell commodities at prices near their all-time lows. What this book will not do is teach you how to be a day-trader or short-term trader. Also, this book is for traders who are looking for slow and steady gains and not outsize gains. If you are looking for a book that will teach you how to conservatively invest in commodities, and you are comfortable with a large financial drawdown while trading, pick up a copy of this intersting book.

Intelligent Speculators will Avoid this Book.......1998-04-15

This work describes a system for commodity speculation called Interval
Trading. The premise and system are simple. Because the value of a
commodity will never go to zero, any downward trend will
eventually bottom out and reverse. To take advantage of this behavior
the authors suggest buying futures contracts at fixed intervals as the
price drops, and then reselling them at fixed intervals as the price
recovers.

This system requires the knowledge or faith that prices eventually
will recover, and tremendous capital to cover accumulated losses while
waiting for a price recovery that may take months, years, or decades to
materialize. This advice violates several of the tenets of successful
trading in that it requires trading against the trend, holding losing
positions forever, and only taking small, fixed profits. Small
traders following this advice should expect to go broke.

The authors' credibility is fatally damaged when then spend several
pages arguing that if you are long a contract, and then sell and
immediately re-buy the contract, then this is somehow different
from simply holding the original contract. Where I'm from,

(- X) + X = 0.

Furthermore, the authors never suggest that they or their clients have made
any money from this extremely risky scheme.

This is a highly risky speculation system, and its
exposition here is mathematically unsound. Intelligent speculators
will avoid this book.

Required Class reading.......2007-05-12

I bought this book for a class that I was taking in Bioethics. At first glance the book looked very dry. But actually it was well organized and well written. I don't know if I would have read this text without it being a requirement but for the class it was a good choice. I also enjoyed the case studies that were at the end of every chapter.

Great advice for a friend.......2000-01-04

Andy's book was exceptional. In Getting Ahead Without Losing Heart, Andy tackles one of the most challenging topics in life - Personal Happiness. The books revolves around interviews of a variety of people from all different walks of life each describing the turning points in their life in relation to their happiness and sanity. Some of his friends did a complete 180 while others adjusted their sights a small amount. What I enjoyed about this book was the casual, easy reading format - it is written like Andy is giving advice to a friend. It is this advice that helps a person put things into perspective demonstrating that even the most successful people in the world are having the same mixed emotions about their happiness that a young adult can have. I recommend this book very highly and feel that everyone should glance through it.

Career Choices: Whose voice are you following.......1999-11-08

The author interviews seven individuals who openly and candidly discuss their decisions concerning college and career. The lives of these individuals, the heartbreak, the confusion and the desire to understand are vividly portrayed through the words of each person's story. In addition, the author's own story is woven into the seven and helps to add meaning and a theme to the book. The seven people interviewed include: a corporate lawyer, stockbroker, wallstreet trader, marketing manager, investment banker, writer and corporate man. All have something to share with us about their life choices and where that led them. While these fast trackers wanted to attend the very best schools and have the very best jobs, in the end they find that life is more than college or jobs. They turn out to be normal people trying to find meaning and happiness in corporate America. At the end of each chapter are some very good questions to ponder. Finally, this book will be required reading for our 18 year old.

Though-provoking collection of experiences of real people.......1999-10-16

The pace and pressures of the business world have done nothing but accelerate in recent years. Not everyone finds wholehearted focus on business to the exclusion of everything else to be the personal ideal. This book describes the experiences of seven real people who started out on the fastest of tracks, and yet were not truly happy. The process they went though examining their lives, and the sometimes drastic steps they took to redefine themselves are fascinating, and very human, reading. Everyone at some time has reason to question their direction. Many people will find someone to identify with and solutions they had not considered. This is a meaningful book on coping with the fast-paced life of today, written by an author whose career is based on helping motivate business people. He fully shares his expertise with the reader. Full disclosure: I am the author's older brother and very much settled in on the fast track!

Text review of Ethics and the Conduct of Business.......2000-06-14

The text was very informative, although I was disappointed in the instructional nature of the book. I am recently finishing a business ethics course in college where this book is our class text. It would have been extremely helpfull if there had been an end of section review with test questions to challenge a students learning and understanding of the subject matter. Otherwise, as stated before, the book was rather informative and the case studies were interesting.

MEN DON'T USUALLY WRITE ABOUT PERSONAL STUFF...........2005-06-06

I remember reding about this book when it was first published, but really had no interest in reading about yet another failed marriage. Too depressing. But then after reading The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls and learning that this author is her current husband, my interest was piqued. I LOVED The Glass Castle and was very curious about John Taylor as her husband. So I bought, and read, this book.

I can sort of see why one reviewer here referred to the author as "whining".... But then don't we all when we go through the harrowing, nauseating experience of divorce? I did. And I'm not a whiner. I thought the author was just being as honest as he could. The only part I really didn't understand is what actually happened in this marriage to cause it to be so miserable for each of them. They got married, they did this, they did that, and then he was having an affair since he was so miserable. About what, exactly? Maybe his point is that it doesn't have to be anything specific in this day and age of demanding absolute happiness; anything less means d-i-v-o-r-c-e. Sad.

In any case, I enjoyed the book because men usually don't write about this stuff.... and because I can see why he and Jeannette Walls were drawn to each other. I would have liked to read more about him and Jennette, but maybe that will come in a future book. I do believe that Jeannette definitely deserves a quiet, reassuring, stable marriage and it would appear that John Taylor can provide that for her.

Honest and Brutal look at one Marriage.......2004-12-03

After having read the book, then read some of the reviews, I was suprised at how outraged some people were at this story. This is probably the most realistic viewpoint about a relationship that I have read in a long time. Does that mean that every man cheats on his wife? No. Does that mean that every woman wants "maintennance" for the rest of her life? No. What it does mean is that sometimes people make mistakes (in this case, several of them), but they must go on. Granted, there were several times where I found myself angry at the author for his actions, but who am I to judge someone elses misfortunes, when we all have skeletons in our closet.

Is it autobiography? Or not?.......2002-09-20

While the author's writing style is compelling, this story's narrator is not totally credible. The reader may find themselves wondering, as I did, whether this book is truly autobiographical, or a fictionalized and air-brushed version of "One Marriage." Either way, what about the WIFE's side of the story? Numerous infidelities prove that the husband in this relationship certainly lacked committment. It sounds to me as if he didn't think seriously about his marriage until his lack of conviction contributed to its end.

After finding that my boyfriend's mother had given him this book to read after he had a talk with her about marriage! I would just like to know how other readers would feel about this? I took it quite badly!

Couldn't Put It Down!.......2000-09-08

I found John's honesty of going into his marriage, to the breakup simply poignant. He reflected on society's standards, his family and the things that led to the demise of his marriage. Really a captivating read.
