One-Stop Shopping for E-Banking Law.......1998-05-21

As the chair of the American Bar Association's Subcommittee on Electronic Commerce, I recently reviewed this book for an upcoming issue of the South Carolina Law Review. In that review, I noted that few other works have addressed the intersection of electronic commerce and banking law, and characterized the book as "a consistently impressive combination of a treatise and a client memorandum." I found particularly useful the authors' detailed, informed, and intensely practical surveys of electronic payment technologies, regulatory actions, and judicial decisions. Separate sections, which can be read independently, are devoted to the missions and relevant activities of various regulatory agencies such as the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Other chapters discuss security and privacy of online banking systems, the operation of stored-value systems such as Mondex and Visa Cash, online brokerage and insurance services, intellectual property online, and Internet-based jurisdiction. I believe that this book is useful not only for reference but as a survey of developments in this rapidly-moving area. In my opinion, someone who sat down and read 50 pages a night of 21st Century Money, Banking and Commerce could get painlessly in two weeks more substantive information than most seminars on electronic commerce could deliver.

This average book for the most part is good to use as a general reference. It is somewhat outdated and it uses California law for most of its examples so if you live in another state, you'll need to find out what the law is in YOUR state. The best parts of the book are the practice exercises at the end of each chapter in which you use the disk provided. This gives "hands-on" experience.

This book is very useful for anyone who is interested in becoming a legal secretary. Not only does it cover all of the various legal documents that are prepared in a law office, but it also explains calendaring, telephone skills and billing systems. In addition, there are chapters on legal research and getting a job. This is a very thorough book and I highly recommend it!

Even my husband loves it!!.......2002-08-24

I am so pleased with the response from my family since I started using this cookbook. Whenever I make something not in this book my husband complains. It is great having my "meat-and-potatoes" man enjoy healthy foods. I love how I can find any ingredient required at my local grocery. (No small task where we live.) I also like how most recipes are very versatile. I can easily substitute when I haven't made it to the grocery store and since most recipes call for "standard" seasonings, those are generally on hand. If you are into gourmet cooking or just love exotic ingredients you probably wouldn't enjoy this book. However, if you would like a better way to cook lean ground beef, fish, chicken and veggies (instead of broiling, steaming and grilling) and want your kids and husband to rave, and not realize they are eating very low calorie, then you will love this book.

Not all it's hyped up to be.......2002-04-17

Every single recipe I've tried out of this book has been dreadful. I'm a good cook and like to cook healthy meals, so it's not me. The recipes are not tasty, or even good. My kids certainly wouldn't eat them, and they aren't junk food kids. Don't waste your money on paying for the ingredients that go into these recipes, nor for the price of the book.

Getting the most energy from the foods we eat..........2001-05-30

Jyl Steinback is a personal trainer who tries to make everything she cooks as healthy as possible. She explains how you can get the most energy out of the foods you eat. By using substitutes she still is able to enjoy her favorite foods without all the fat.

When making chocolate cake, she uses applesauce, nonfat cream cheese, skim milk and nonfat vanilla yogurt and an egg substitute. To make Guacamole, she uses asparagus, green peas, tomatoes, salsa, onion powder, cilantro, nonfat mayo, lime juice, garlic powder, Tabasco sauce and ground red pepper and pepper to taste. You do have to have a food processor to make some of the recipes.

There is also a chapter for one-dish meals that busy parents will enjoy using. For dinner you might enjoy a soy milkshake, a salmon burger or chicken strips and oven baked potato casserole. Each recipe has the nutritional analysis per serving.

Jyl makes use of meat substitute and other soy products. If you love soy products, you will enjoy this book even more. I think the soy just takes on the flavors of all the other ingredients.

Do you want your kids to eat healthier but have given up on getting them to eat their veggies? The author also gives hints on how to get children to eat their vegetables! She gets her kids to eat healthy foods by making yummy low-fat and fat-free dips for vegetables and I know that gets my husband to eat fresh vegetables as well ;>. She puts out the vegetables when her kids are the most hungry, like after school. For adults, this time is right after work.

Jyl Steinback also advises parents to eat with their children and to actually sit down to a family meal. This encourages a higher intake of fruits, vegetables and fiber. It also helps children to eat more slowly and engage in conversation. She gets her kids involved in planning the meals and respects her children's ability to determine when they have had enough food to eat. She doesn't make them clean their plates, but gives them a well-balanced and varied diet. She says that when dealing with picky eaters, it can take up to 10 or more exposures to the food before they will decide to take a bite.

Jyl also takes a look at the myths and the facts of healthy eating. She explains how unprocessed foods don't always make them more healthy. Canned, dried and frozen food can also be high in nutritional value. Canned vegetables might sometimes be more nutritious because they are packed at the peak of freshness.

This is her eighth cookbook! Lots of great information, look for all her books!

This book was difficult to read because it is so disjointed and un-clear. It has some good experience information, but is more like her personal discombobulated diary than a clear story.

Cracked and cracking.......2003-03-16

Why is this book important? Many reasons - but one is that it's by and about disability, and it proves beyond doubt that people generally considered 'crackers' have much to say, and much to offer.

More than that, it's a cracking story - full of pain, courage sadness, and hilarious moments of comedy.

The author tells her story in broken bits of narrative, fragments of memory, and simple heartfelt poems (that get more complex and sophisticated as time passes) Like Humpty Dumpty she has to pick up the broken pieces of her mind as the kings' horses - psychiatry, education and state 'care' - try to trample her into the ground.

It's an internal and an external journey that should shatter all our beliefs, if we have them, that there's anyone out there to help if the same thing happened to us.

Not just an interesting autobiography, but the first work by a major new author, Cracked will have your brain reeling.

This is a very good book on a complex subject. It's full of interesting and cutting edge perpectives on development economics. However, the book leaves out an important viewpoint, which can be found in The Elusive Quest for Growth by Easterly.

In the five-month period covered by this volume of the Secretary of State Series, Madison and Jefferson work jointly to acquire final possession of, and establish a preliminary government for, the territory acquired in the Louisiana Purchase of May 1803 while simultaneously dealing with merchants' complaints arising from the associated claims convention. The loss and destruction of the frigate Philadelphia at Tripoli and the enslavement of the crew, an incident which Madison considered of far less import than did U.S. consuls in Europe and Africa and later historians, shocked Americans. From France, Robert R. Livingston reported the discovery of a royalist assassination plot against Napoleon and the retaliatory kidnapping and execution of the duc d'Enghien, scion of the Condés. This is a charming story of the true life experiences of a girl (now a Grandmother) growing up in the Philipines during World War 2.

I am sure that teen-agers would enjoy reading this book, as well as adults. It's a small book and can be read in a matter of hours. I found I could not "put this book down"!
