A good reference.......2000-11-24

This is an invaluable reference work for anyone looking for information on the philanthropic world. However, there is 1 glaring omission: My brother, David G. Jacobs, is the Editor of this book, and is credited as such on the inside front cover. I don't know who this Jeffrey Falkenstein is, or why he is listed as "compiler". I felt I had to set the record straight on this item.

A Very Nice Book.......2007-04-17

I became interested in different books on diatetes when my mom was hit with diabetes several years ago. This book was brought to my attention and I have to say it really is helpful. It is chock full of wonderful alternatives to the fatty and sugar filled foods that we eat as a whole, and these recipes are very inviting and delicious. We have main dishes such as 'New England Simmered Beef,' and 'Greek Lamb Kebabs,' just to name a couple. We also have some tempting saladas, grilled foods, soups, drinks and of course desserts. At the end of the book we have some information on the disease and how to live with it and also some tips on buying and stocking food and how to plan meals. All in all this is a very helpful book for anyone learning to live with diabetes. Recommended.

Most books on systems deal primarily with the steps and procedures involved in developing your own system, such as data selection, issues of optimization and curve-fitting, testing procedures, and evaluation of performance.

In contrast to others, this book is a collection of 82 systems already developed, with precise entry and exit rules already established.

The editors provide a short, detailed summary for each system. They leave no ambiguity whatsoever: Every step of the process for calculating signals is shown with exact mathematical precision and clarity. Many of the systems discussed come from well-known system developers and authors, amont them Larry williams, Don Worden, Richard Arms, Benjamin Crocker and Welles Wilder.

Of special note are eight systems developed by the late Richard Donchian, who never published his methods in any formal fashion and on whose work there is no reference material available in any form. I believe the systems detailed in this work encapsulate most of the technical work that Donchian developed, with the exception of such moving-average methods as his well-known 5-and 20-day system.

Many of the systems described herein were actually developed years ago, but in most cases, the original publications are no longer available in print. These would include such examples as William Dunnigan's Thurst Method, George Cole's Method, the Midian-line Method popularized by Dr. Alan Andrews and Gerald Appel, and the volume-based methods of Joseph Granville.

System Traders Only.......2004-03-26

This book describes trading systems and I'm very happy to have found it. I have been trading futures for about a year now by the seat of my pants. I realized that it is extremely important to have a system to give you the necessary indicators to buy and sell, but none of the literature I've read up to this point described the system in enough detail to actually put it to use. I've read many futures trading books that describe money management, risk management, the importance of having a trading plan and system, but they never went into enough detail about specific systems. This book is a how-to book on trading systems. I'll admit there are only several main trading systems described with different "twists" to them, but if you are looking for the details regarding the main trading systems in use today this book is for you. This book contains the recipes required to implement a trading system.

Mediocre / unorganized.......2000-09-24

If you consider 10-day, 20-day and 40-day Donchian channel breakouts as 3 "different" systems, then yes, this book offers ~80 "different" systems. What peeved me was the fact that there were only 30 or so unique systems in the book. The other 50 were variations on the same theme. Half the book deals with various sorts of funky moving averages... not interesting, and not very useful. Also, the readability is extremely poor. It's a good buy at $15, but definitely not worth $50.

It depends what your looking for........1999-08-30

The book gives the formulas for over 70 trading systems to be put into your computer. If that is what you are looking for then the book is great. Myself,I was looking for more how to stuff then math formulas of trading systems. I wanted to know how the systems worked and to have an explaination for them. The book does not do this. Again it gives you the formulas for some trading systems. For me that was way over my head considering I dont have a clue in how to program that stuff into my computer. So again it depends what your looking for.

good idea - bad book.......2002-03-24

I bought this book yesterday and I am taking it back today. I am pretty new to investing (maybe 10 trades in all) and even I found errors and misleading statements right from the start. For example, this book describes both bonds and blue chip stocks as investments that will never lose value, which is absolutely not true.

Here are some other misleading quotes:

"Stocks by default provide higher returns than mutual funds since management fees are not levied on stock owners." In reality, many mutual funds actually exceed the returns of particular stocks, even when the management fees are taken into consideration.

"If your stock is worth more now than what you paid for it, then you have realized a capital gain." In fact, you have not realized anything until you actually sell the stock at its increased value.

In both of these examples, I think I understand what the author was getting at, but the statements are so misleading or vague that they seem dangerous, especially for beginners. And the book is chock-full of these statements. A book if this kind seems like such a great idea, it's too bad this one tried but failed to deliver what the beginner probably really needs.

Not bad........2001-07-19

The best part of this book is it's simplicity. The author was able to put aside enough of the technical jargon that most brokers love to repeat after each other to intimidate us artistically inclined creatures.

Another aspect I love is how concise and to the point everything is in this book. It was capable of clearing away the mystery of investing. My attitude has changed from a Las Vegas casino view of the stock market to one of respect for the market.

I went ahead and opened an account with an online broker, followed some basic principles and am doing okay. No, I'm not a tycoon. I just invest a little at a time for the long haul.

In a word, this book provides enough horse sense to get you started on the road to understanding investments.

Easy to read, user friendly, great for beginners........1999-09-28

This book has all the basics you need to know about the stock market, from options to IPOs. It is indeed a great book for beginners, especially if you don't know much about all the investment terms. However, if you look for actual stock plays and case studies, look for another book.

great primer!.......1999-06-09

I am not a big fan of nonfiction reading, but this book was quick and easy to read. It has information on just about everything to answer all of your stock questions. I would definitely recommend it to any novice who wants to get started in the stock market.

I knew nothing and now I'm encouraged to go on learning........1999-03-19

As a true beginner, I knew NOTHING of P/E ratios, stop orders, NAV, and all of the terms that intimidated me when trying an online brokerage for the first time. This book gave me enough info to convince me that I can do this. More reading will be required, though.

A Word Of Warning.......1999-01-09

Books on this interesting character are not plentiful, therefore it was a must for my library. How reliable are the facts provided? Jeffery gives the impression that Kitchener was victor over the Mahdi in 1898. Elsewhere I am led to believe the Mahdi died soon after Gordon. Did anyone proof read this book? After all it is University of Toronto Press!
