5 out of 5 stars "Rigorous and Practical".......2004-10-27

This is a rigorous and practical book in which the author takes you on a methodical, purposive journey, but it is not a highly technical accounting textbook. Each new area is introduced by applying the basics learned at the start. All fundamental areas of accounting are covered, but each is not overbroad. The learning process is facilitated by constantly applying the fundamentals of accounting to real examples. This application tests what you have already learned.

5 out of 5 stars A Low-Carb Book Even 'Dummies' Can Appreciate .......2005-09-25

You gotta love the Dummies books that have become so firmly ensconced into American culture that nobody is ever offended by them and actually flock to these books like ants to a lollipop! With over 150 million books in print covering over 900 topics, it should not be surprising to learn that the Dummies books are the world's best-selling reference series of all time with their signature yellow and black covers (They remind me of the old Cliff's Notes books I used to see people using in high school when a book report was due on Shakespeare. Really, it was other people, not me. Honestly. Trust me. Well, maybe once!).

But the latest in this famous series of books is about a subject near and dear to my heart -- low-carb. Can you believe it?! The book is called the Healthy Carb Cookbook For Dummies and was written by freelance writer, recipe guru, and low-carb lifestyle enthusiast Jan McCracken. You really ought to get to know this engaging woman who will make you laugh at the simplest things while sharing with you the knowledge she has gleaned from her more than a quarter century of cooking experiences.

"Change Your Mind ... Change Your Heart ... Lose Weight for LIFE!" That's the motto McCracken lives by and it is evident throughout this entire book how much she genuinely believes in that.

Healthy Carb Cookbook For Dummies, like all of the Dummies books, is very easy to read and is designed to come back to time and time again for a refresher on various topics which are conveniently outlined at the beginning of the book. McCracken summarizes what the low-carb lifestyle is all about, how you can incorporate healthy and delicious recipes that are sure to please even your finicky eaters, tips on how to make low-carb living an easy transition, as well as over 100 very unique and absolutely tantalizing low-carb recipes to sink your teeth into while maintaining your weight.

Whether you have been livin' la vida low-carb for years or if you're a low-carb newbie, Healthy Carb Cookbook For Dummies is sure to have something in it that will useful to you in your low-carb lifestyle. Many of the basic concepts McCracken shares in this book completely dispels most of the rumors and lies about this way of eating that are too often repeated in the media and by so-called health "experts." With a grin and the truth, McCracken shares information that will help people be able to stay on low-carb for the rest of their lives as a permanent change in the way they eat and live. That's the secret to lasting weight loss and McCracken gets it as a 10-year veteran of livin' la vida low-carb.

As a 180-pound low-carb weight loss success story, I am always looking for new and exciting recipes to try to keep my low-carb program fresh and vibrant so it never gets boring (that's another lie the media often tells about low-carb!). Healthy Carb Cookbook For Dummies contains plenty of recipes to keep you busy for a while. I am always telling people who are on the low-carb lifestyle to try at least one new recipe a week to spice up their menu. McCracken has so many to choose from in this book you'll have a hard time deciding which one to try first!

I like the fact that McCracken advocates exercise as part of your low-carb lifestyle change because it is so important for people who may think they only need to eat foods low in carbohydrates to lose weight. While that is technically accurate, your body craves exercise (as strange as that sounds!) and wants to be moved. It is something that anyone who has been successful at keeping their weight under control will tell you is vital.

However, there is one point I personally disagree with McCracken about and that is portion control on your low-carb plan. She believes you should watch the size of your meal as well as your calories and fat to do low-carb right. While I agree we shouldn't be eating "platefuls of high-fat meats, foods dripping in fatty oils, tons of calories, or lots of highly processed foods" as McCracken writes in her book, I don't think obsessing over the fat grams, calories, or amount of food is necessary when you are livin' la vida low-carb. Throughout my weight loss in 2004 and in my weight maintenance ever since, not once have I paid attention to fat grams, calories, or food portions as part of my method for controlling my weight. Just the carbs. Maybe I'm weird, but doing that has worked wonderfully for me and I'm not about to change that method now.

Much of Healthy Carb Cookbook For Dummies is filled with all those delicious and easy "real food" (as she calls them) recipes, including gorgeous color photos of many of these dishes. It'll make you wanna jump in the kitchen right away and start cooking all day! McCracken would be proud of you for making that all-important first step in a low-carb journey you will travel on for the rest of your life.

See, even "dummies" can appreciate a low-carb book like Healthy Carb Cookbook For Dummies. Hee hee!

5 out of 5 stars This Dummy is a Real Winner; Smart, Funny, Delightful.......2005-09-22

I have been part of the low-carb community for several years, watching the trends and the ups and downs of low carb advocacy. I've always leaned toward a healthy version and moderation. From the beginning I preferred "real food" made healthy, and this delightful book offers a wonderful variety of down to earth and delicious, "real world" recipes. This book is a realistic and humorous guide for living a healthy life for real people. It addresses ease of preparation, economy of effort, consideration of meal budgets, and most importantly abundance of flavor - all with health as the underlying factor. I love every recipe I've tried so far.

As any "Dummies" reader knows, there's more to a "Dummies" cookbook than recipes. And in this book, there are terrific, common sense, and again, realistic, advice, tips and information on how to get the most benefit from living right in this fast-paced world. I also appreciate that the author obviously knows her chops, so to speak. She has done her research and provides information that I have not found readily available about low and healthy carb.

I've been researching and reading about all angles of low carb eating for several years, and this book actually gave me some fresh information, new perspectives and a fun read. If you have any curiosity or interest in low or healthy carb cooking, I highly recommend getting a copy of this book.

Only a small percentage of those who try day trading achieve success because most are undercapitalized, lack discipline, and have little idea how much knowledge and experience are required. For the determined newcomer, David S. Nassar's How to Get Started in Electronic Day Trading Home Study Course is a comprehensive immersion that includes a well-written workbook, 10 hours' worth of audiocassettes, and a CD-ROM. Nassar, author of the book How to Get Started in Electronic Day Trading, is a trader who heads a brokerage firm offering electronic trading as well as training. He writes, "My task here is to teach you to play with fire without getting burned."

The workbook presents an overview of the markets and introductions to electronic direct-access trading (EDAT), indexes and indicators, and technical analysis. Also included are detailed explanations on how to pick tradable stocks (are you a specialist, scalper, or shepherd?); trade the news (earnings, splits, economic announcements); and profit from going short ("trading the bear inside you"). The chapters on market psychology and money and mind management are particularly astute ("The Emotional Bank Account Is Funded by Attitude"), and all are cross-referenced and reinforced in the corresponding audio tapes. The CD-ROM includes effective audio-visual presentations on the components of an EDAT trading platform, the analytical tools, trading mechanics and execution methods--most illuminating are the trades the author navigates, tick by tick, on NASDAQ level two.

In all, Nassar has done an admirable job of creating a thorough introductory training course, and his enthusiasm and passion for markets and trading are infectious. Those serious about learning to trade successfully will find this an effective--and hopefully profitable--introduction. --Scott Harrison

            2 out of 5 stars A small fish in a competitive pond.......2007-04-01

If there were no other books for those desiring to learn to trade this book would be ok. This covers a lot of the basics but not as well as many others available. I have been investing in equities online for five years - before that in mutual funds that I selected. I'm now looking to start trading based on technical analysis rather than fundamentals. Two books that I would suggest that are more comprehensive and easier to read are Toni Turner's book "A Beginner's Guide to Day Trading Online" and the best I have read so far by John Carter "Mastering the Trade".

1 out of 5 stars Bad Book by an Excellent Author.......2006-03-19

Maybe "bad" is a bit harsh. David Nassar is a real and successful trader, and a guy who has years and years of experience training and managing highly successful traders to boot. He writes great articles for Active Trader and Futures magazines, and has written another book that I consider to be five-star outstanding.

But this book is disappointingly basic. It focuses on the mechanics of how trading is done and gives very little, if any, actual trading methodologies. A quick look at the table of contents and you will get the overview. It seemed to me like half the book was discussing how an order is placed!

Perhaps part of the problem is being outdated. Deciding how to route an order these days is a very insignificant factor in daytrading; the days of the SOES bandits are long, long gone. Broker's trading platforms now use smart routing technologies to get the best fill, and as a sharp trader you are using limit orders on stocks that have a 1 cent spread anyway. I suppose this was written back when you could take advantage of price differences between ECNs and Market Makers.

Your time is much better spent reading his other book, Rules of the Trade, where you can actually learn a few things and become inspired.

bought book flipped through for 5 minutes, found good use starting a woodfire. all the info contained can be had for free on the internet. if youve been trading more then 2 days you already know more then the scope of this book

3 out of 5 stars You can make it using a simpler approach.......2005-11-17

I like some of the ideas presented by Mr. Nassar, however i think he needs to update his book and get a little bit more practical.

When you make a trade either your going to lose money or your going to make money, and some other times you will break even. When you win some body else will lose and so forth, but that's NOT what's important.

The most important aspect in day trading is the knowledge FILTER you employ to make your buy & sell decisions. There are many "fantastic" strategies outhere, but you need to test them in order to discover which ones help you the most.

Complicated strategies that rely on a "boat load" of technical indicators can make you slow, and being slow in this game can be as dangerous as not knowing what to do in the first place.

I think the worst thing that can happen to a beginner day trader is to get information overload. It's better to go step by step, and test a simple strategy that can show you how to focus on concrete ways to make money.

Fortunatly there are some good sites on the web today that can show you how to trade stocks in practical and effective ways. One of those sites is Stress Free Traders ( StressFreeTraders com )

In the end, stock investing & trading is all about buying and selling according to your knowledge FILTER. Once you master and follow youre proven filter parameters like a clock, you can expect to start making serious amounts of cash on a consistent basis.

5 out of 5 stars Experience Comes Through.......2003-10-30

Awesome ideas to make money with. I have been trading 35 years and feel the ideas in this book are timeless techniques that I know work. The book was written with experience and it shows. I've read many and this is one of the best.

            Book Description

With funding for nonprofits shrinking and global markets shaky, our business and social sectors are both confronting an increasingly uncertain future. Many organizations are searching for innovative strategies that will counter the mounting pressures felt by communities and corporations alike. Common Interest, Common Good argues that forward-looking businesses and social sector organizations (both nonprofit and government) can solve many of their problems by working together-while serving the common good in the process.

According to Shirley Sagawa and Eli Segal, alliances between for-profit and the not-for-profit industries yield enormous benefits for both. Businesses can boost their bottom line by leveraging a nonprofit partnership to enhance their image, reach new markets, increase consumer loyalty, and build a positive reputation with current and prospective employees. The upside is just as powerful for nonprofits, because an alliance with a corporation can provide crucial funds and visibility while helping to attract new volunteers and donors. Common Interest, Common Good showcases many such successful partnerships, from corporate sponsorships and cause-related marketing to employee volunteer programs and school-to-work initiatives. The authors also offer some much-needed guidance for avoiding many of the pitfalls that can undermine even the best alliances.

4 out of 5 stars Great book from a business perspective.......2001-05-17

This is a great book for businesses looking for unique opportunities to both make a difference and raise their community standing. It is comprised of real, powerful examples of how these partnerships can and do work. This book should be read along with Bill Shore's, "The Cathedral Within."

5 out of 5 stars Creating Great Value for Companies and Communities.......2000-09-14

Every company I know is interested in getting and providing a great deal. Every nonprofit I know is committed to the greater welfare of the society. But almost no companies and nonprofits know how to link together to multiply their effectiveness in achieving their purposes.

This book provides outstanding examples and a superb template for creating partnerships of great value for all involved: companies, their employees, nonprofits, and the communities that everyone serves. Based on the examples in this book, it looks like the benefits can easily be 20 to 1 in the near term from the time and money invested. That kind of return is hard to find in business, philanthropy, or social entrepreneurship. The reason it happens is that the company can add value that the nonprofit cannot, and vice versa. The strategic partnership is not unlike the strategic alliances that companies create all the time with comapnies that offer unique strategic capabilities.

The reason these benefit are so large (and growing) is because customers and employees are ever more responsive to promoting a social cause, companies are getting better at partnering with outside organizations, and the expertise of nonprofits is growing.

Businesses can gain by getting low-cost recognition from customers that will increase sales, obtaining low-cost resources, making work more meaningful to employees (helping to retain them), attracting employees more easily, and learning how cause-based leadership can transform an organization. When you look at it from a dollar and cents point of view, these partnerships would pass any accounting test you want to use. Not to seek out these partnerships is to waste potential for growth and profits in your company. Corporate boards should be asking company CEOs to develop these partnerships!

Nonprofits can gain by learning how to increase outcomes they care about, gaining access to resources that would otherwise be unavailable, getting more exposure, and finding improved ways of meeting their missions.

Communities will gain by getting more resources, expertise, and attention from social entrepreneurs in companies and nonprofits.

So this is a win-win-win world, but somebody has to get it going. Chapter ten is excellent on that subject: It proposes a 5 step model for the nonprofit -- self assess, identify a partner, connect to that partner, test the relationship idea, and grow the relationship.

Although the initiative can come from the company, it usually won't. The executives already have other agendas, are receiving hundreds of requests for assistance, and don't know what many nonprofits can do for them. You can add some corporate executives to your nonprofit board who will understand companies to help you make these connections. The biggest hurdle will be the lack of corporate experience of your nonprofit's staff. Nonprofits are used to looking for a check, not a partnership. But that reliance on gifts alone is stalled thinking that will hold back the development of the public good.

The case histories include Home Depot and KaBOOM! (building playgrounds), Microsoft and the American Library Association (adding computers and Internet services to libraries in low-income areas), Denny's and Save the Children (raising money for poor children), BankBoston and City Year (sponsoring volunteers in community work), Ridgeview, Inc. and Newton-Conover Public Schools (creating better public schools and better parent involvement from employees with children), and Boeing and Pioneer Human Services (creating airplane parts by employing those with disadvantaged backgrounds). I found all of them to be interesting and well analyzed. Each one gave me ideas for how to pursue opportunties like these for the nonprofit on whose board I serve.

I especially recommend this book to company leaders, human resource executives, purchasing managers, and marketing planners. On the nonprofit side, this book will be a revelation to staffs and board members.

After you have read this book, please join the board of a nonprofit (if you are not already on one). Then, please use the processes in this book to create a strategic partnership with your company or another one in your community. You will gain strategic partnering skills and a sense of a job well done. The others will gain the benefits described above. If we each did this, our communities would soon be far more wonderful places to live and work.

            5 out of 5 stars Powerful thinking.......2000-02-29

Common Interest, Common Good represents powerful thinking that has already withstood many challenges and overcome many barriers. Corporate executives will benefit greatly from the book's clear and cogent lessons on the benefits of corporate/social sector partnership. This book is proof that goodness can endure.

5 out of 5 stars Common Interest, Common Good.......2000-02-19

I'd strongly recommend this book both to corporate executives looking to improve corporate image and morale and to non-profit leaders seeking new funding mechanisms. Although the hokey title evokes past clichés like "doing good by doing well," the book is actually a practical, hard-headed approach to making companies run better by working with non-profits -- either through straight philanthropy, employee volunteer efforts, or joint ventures.

            5 out of 5 stars A most useful book.......1999-12-01

As a former corporate executive and a former member of the boards of directors of several non-profits, I can only wish this book could have been available years ago. Just think what I could have accomplished! I certainly recommend it for people in similar positions now.

In contrast to so many business oriented books, this one is engagingly written and eminently readable

              Book Description

Ethics Through Corporate Strategy is a daring challenge to anyone who uses the customary language of business in America. It is daring because Daniel Gilbert argues that we should discard two popular ways of linking business and ethics. It is challenging, because Gilbert proceeds from the premise that everyone who uses a language of business is responsible for the ethical implications of that way of talking. This work is one demonstration of how we can relocate conversations about business in the larger conversation that we know as liberal education.

4 out of 5 stars Useful addition to tax literature.......1997-11-15

Mr. Pollack's book is an historical and critical review of the politics of the federal income tax. Because he focuses on tax complexity as a political phenomenom, the book is a highly useful addition to the tax literature, and is somewhat unique in its focus. Chapter 7, on the causes of tax complexity, is especially interesting reading. While the causes of tax complexity are well-known, Mr. Pollack does an excellent job of discussing the various causes and why these factors are so intractible. Also useful is his discussion of the tax reform criteria 'fairness' and 'vertical equity'. Pollack points out that these terms cannot be objectively defined- fairness and vertical equity are subjective concepts that continually add to the complexity of the tax code. By and large, the book maintains a dispassionate, impartial attitude toward the tax reform debate. The author adds a 'postscript' on the 'flat tax' that is, however, somewhat partisan, and, for that reason, disappointing. He rails against the 'fairness' of the flat tax, after the bulk of the book is devoted to emphasizing that 'fairness' is a subjective matter. He questions whether the flat tax would really be any simpler than the current income tax. The flat tax is a wage tax; how could it not be simpler? Finally, he notes that there would be significant transition issues to deal with in switching to a different system of collecting revenue. That's certainly correct, but hardly a compelling reason to stick with the current mess

                      Book Description

This book is an insight to the time and the Presidency of Ronald Reagan and is dedicated to promoting the legacy of President Ronald Reagan, to fulfilling the vision of his life's work and to ensure that America's future remains bright. To realize President Reagan's dreams for our generation and generations to come, a Memorial Fund has been established to benefit his Library in Simi Valley, California. Ten percent of the proceeds are being donated to that fund. Ronald Reagan believed that everything happened for a reason, and that we can trust in God's purposes. He believed that people are basically good. He had no tolerance for bigotry or injustice. Above all, he believed in the courage and triumph of free men and in the capacity of the American people to overcome any obstacle. With bold, persistent action, he restored the confidence of our nation, strengthened the spirit of free enterprise, challenged and shamed an oppressive empire, and inspired millions with his conviction and moral courage. As he showed what a President should be, he also showed us what a man should be. Ronald Reagan carried himself with a decency and attention to the small kindnesses that also define a good life. He was a courtly, gentle, and considerate man, never known to slight or embarrass others. Ronald Reagan deeply loved the United States of America. And that love was returned. Tens of thousands of mourners stood in line in California and in Washington, D.C. to pay their final respects. There were 21-gun salutes and dignified processions, and home-made memorials at a funeral home in Santa Monica. Our country is stronger and our world is freer for the brave leadership of this modest son of America. RonaldReagan always told us that for America, our best was yet to come. We know that is true for him, too. His work is done. And now, as President George W. Bush said, "a shining city awaits him."

                                      Book Description

This unique tribute, in words and photographs, tells the dramatic story of America's fortieth president from his humble Midwestern beginnings to his successful careers as a broadcaster, movie star, television personality, and finally the consummate politician who forged a remarkable bond with his fellow citizens, one that continues to this day.

The book includes descriptions of the event-filled history of Reagan's presidency from his two successful campaigns, the invasion of Grenada, the bombing of Libya, the struggle for democracy in Central America, his visionary rticulation of the Strategic Defense Initiative, the summit meetings in which he faced down Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, to the causes and outcome of the Iran-contra affair. There's also the story of Ronald and Nancy Reagan's marriage, one marked by great mutual love and devotion made stronger as a result of the assassination attempt that almost took the president's life, and by Nancy's battle with breast cancer and of how, with Nancy at his side, Reagan so effectively communicated to the American people his innate optimism. For him every day was 'Morning in America' and every citizen had the opportunity to help create a society of hope, progress and mutual respect.

As the leader most responsible for the fall of communism, which led to the realignment of Central and Eastern Europe, Ronald Reagan left an indelible mark upon world history.

                                      Book Description

"You don't become President of the United States.  You are given temporary custody of an institution called the presidency... It is a sacred trust and an honor beyond words or measure."

Few politicians have come to represent their era as definitely as former president Ronald Reagan.  Now, for the first time in one remarkable audio production, this preeminent leader's story is told in his own unmistakable voice, through a collection of his most memorable speeches, public addresses and debates.

Here is a lively and fascinating look at a rare politician, a patriot who embodied our national spirit in its best guise, and who made us all feel proud to be an American.  It is at once an historical treasure and a fitting tribute to one of our country's best-loved icons.

Albert Ballin's _The Deaf Mute Howls_ has been rightly rescuedfrom obscurity by Gallaudet University Press. Balllin offers usvaluable insight into the Deaf community of the 1930s. As a utopian thinker, Ballin argued that all people, deaf and hearing, should learn sign language, in order to end the isolation of deaf people in a hearing world. This was a powerful "howl" indeed in the '30s, a time when oral education had succeeded in banishing sign language from schools for the deaf completely. Ballin reveals the discontent bubbling in the Deaf community in this difficult period, and his book remains an important one today for anyone interested in Deaf history. Doug Baynton's introduction to this new edition is also quite useful.
