5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST IDEA COMPILATIONS FOUND!.......2007-09-24

I have read all of Dr. Niven's books and have found EVERY one of them to be FANTASTIC! People, Relationships, Best Half of Life, Happy People, etc have all been wonderful ideas with the research the idea is based on. As a psychologist, I hate suggesting books (bibliotherapy) that is half-baked or some crap off Opera. David Niven's is concrete, shouldn't offend anyone with a 'religious' overtone (get over it anyways), and not likely to lead them off to some cult or guru. Just plain, safe, reliable and healthy perspectives. Truly "what scientists have learned and how you can use it."

4 out of 5 stars A Great Bathroom Book or Instant Fortune Cookie.......2006-12-24

We all want to be successful. We all want it to be simple. Are there secrets we can get from a book? Hurrah, talk about easy!

This book combines those human desires with another one - the need for silly trivia. This bathroom-perfect-book has 100 different bizarre studies, telling you that 64% of people who felt they failed felt it was someone else's fault. 70% of successful long term managers focus on an even keel in daily life, rather than focussing on highs and lows. 90% of people feel they'll someday hit their career goals.

Each of the studies is accompanied by a little blurb that sometimes relates to the study - and sometimes does not. You also get a short illustrative story featuring a person who comes to an insight about their job or life.

None of the items here are life changing ideas. They're all common sense, and some of them are quite silly. You learn that "it might get worse before it gets better" - so stick with it. On the other hand, maybe you should reevaluate your goals and decide on new, better ones. Who knows which is the better course. After all, "your goals are a living thing." Be sure to "find your own path" - but "don't want everything" - just the things that you should want. "Write down the directions" too - in case someone else is following along behind you and wants to follow your path, towards your goal. Which is changing.

I don't mean to tease this book too much. I did enjoy it. It had nice little thoughts in it that certainly were good to think about. They are like zen koans, things to think about and ponder. Maybe each morning you wake up you could flip the book to a random page, read its message, and then see how it applies to your life. Like "exercise and eat right". That sounds like a good one that could apply to every day. So could "hope springs eternal".

Then again, you could go to a website that gives you a random feel-good idea each day, and accomplish pretty much the same thing. So it all depends if you have a computer screen in your bathroom, or if this book satisfies that need for you.

              5 out of 5 stars Success!!!.......2006-11-26

Good, easy to read book while on the move. Can be picked up anytime. Inspirational as well as logical. Useful to success-driven people who still want act and feel like themselves.

5 out of 5 stars A must for your personal success library........2006-07-31

When asked the question, "How do you define success and what are you doing to achieve it?" most people respond with with a blank stare or a shrug and an "I don't know."

Well, here is the book for those who are struggling to define their ideal of success and anxious to chart a course to achieve that success. David Niven's book is a collection of research, anecdotes, and life changing stories of real people who will inspire, but more importantly, give you concrete tools to help you lay the foundation for achieving your own personal success.

100 Simple Secrets reads like an instructional manual, in which you can turn directly to the chapters most relevant for you and read a short, inspiring piece pertaining to your area of concern. I recommend reading an excerpt of this book every morning to charge your brain and get you ready for the day ahead. It's the perfect companion to breakfast or your first cup of coffee.

The top three lessons I gleaned from this book are found in the chapters, "It's Not How Hard You Try," "Be an Expert," and "Only You Can Say if This Is a World You Can Succeed In." I particularly enjoyed these chapters because I was trying to relate these three lessons to someone who was seeking my advice. Now I have a book and specific chapters to which I can steer them.

The chapters are brief and can be read quickly, making this a very efficient investment of time. A chapter a day will keep you moving toward your goals in both your personal and business life. I highly recommend this for your self help section of your personal library.

4 out of 5 stars Same, but different. Simple, but useful.......2005-11-13

I can understand why some reviewers are quite frustrated with the author's so claimed secrets. If you go through the content page here, you are very likely to get the impression that they are "common sense" or "cliche" repeated regularly in all self help books. What makes this book better is the short conclusions in the end of each "secret" summarizing research findings of social scientists per that "secret", many with statistics quantifying impact of individual factors, say,

Those who sacrifice their individual beliefs and backgrounds ultimately express one third less satisfaction with their jobs and almost two thirds less satisfaction with their lives. FRanklin and Mizell 1995 (22 Remember who you are and where you are)

Those whose careers continute to have momentum are 53 percent more likely to engage in healthy life habits than those whose careers are stalled. Roberts and Friend 1998 (41 Exercise and Eat Right)

Those who spend a lot of time worrying about their jobs are 17 percent less productive than workers who seldom or never worry about their job. Verbeke and Bagozzi 2000 (47 You'll get what you're afraid of)

The productivity of employees who score high in dedication to their career is 33 percent less likely to be affected by the quality of thier managers than is the production of low dedication employees. Pollock 1998 (87 Learn to lead yourself)

Managers of production facilities who are meeting their quality targets actually invest 2o percent more time in improving their practices than managers of facilities that are falling short of their goals. In other words, the better off work harder to get even better. Coulthard 1998 (89 People who have it right work harder to make it better)

Successful people spend t least fifteen minutes everyday thinking about what they are doing and can do to improve their lives. Sigmund 1999 (94 Keep goals where you can see them)

Those who do not feel they are taking steps toward their goals are five times more likely to give up and three times less likely to feel satisfied with their lives. Elliott 1999 (99 Take action)

In my opinion, the references in each "secret" and their bibliography provided do help. The book is good and concise enough to be placed on a working desk as a tool or first aid kit. In short, well worths the time and the price.

p.s. I had read the author's first book "The 100 simple secrets of happy people" as well. Surprisingly the two books are quite different or not repetitive. If you like this "successful" one, you should get the "happy" one as well.

For a quick look into some traits of successful people, pick up Nivens' "100 Simple Secrets." None of what you read is earth shattering, but books like this provide excellent examples of what helps define success. In daily life we often forget some of the lessons in this book, so as a refresher, it an enjoyable read.

Don't expect to come away with some sort of revelation into how people become successful. It is not here. Instead, be prepared to be reminded that the keys to succcess ultimately lie in those time honored traditions like hard work, integrity, and passion for what you do.

                    Book Description

Peter Alexander provides valuable insight, information, advice and guidance to the new or aspiring trader in either stocks or commodities.

The title strikes me as misleading. Although substantial coverage is devoted to issues relevant to trading by computer, the book also covers many other topics which the new trader will find helpful as well. A more apt title might have been The Complete Guide to Issues of Concern to the New Trader.

In the area of computer matters, the author gives advice on the choice of computer hardware and operating systems. He describes several popular charting software programs, with guidance provided on the features he would be certain were included in the package one chooses. He discusses various data vendors and data formats, and the importance of clean data.

Various markets in which the new trader may choose to participate are discussed. Their risk and reward characteristics and other considerations relevant to deciding which market is best suited to the individual are covered thorouthly. The different types of orders that may be used in various markets and exchanges are explained and copious examples provided.

Important issues covered include minimum price fluctuations, commission costs, liquidity, volatility, markets (and exchanges) to avoid, and the relative pros and cons of daytrading versus position trading.

The author provides a basic education on the various types of price charting, such as bar charts, candlesticks, and point and figure charts. In the area of computerized technical indicators, he provides a concise, easy to understand explanation of most major indicators, covering their calculation, interpretation, and their use in trading decisions. The various chart formations and patterns are discussed briefly, such as head and shoulders, triangles, flags and the like.

One of the chief contributions of the book is its lucid and thorough explanation of the development, backtesting and implementation of trading systems. Several detailed case studies illustrate the principles the beginner needs to know to pursue creating his own system.

Sound investment principles are emphasized through the book, such as the importance of sound money management principles and the role of discipline. Comprehensive glossaries of technical analysis terms, financial terms, and other useful information are provided.

The author's style of writing is free flowing, interesting, and easy to understand. His colorful phrases and metaphors are, in places, reminiscent of Elder's Trading for a Living. This is a great book for new traders searching for guidance and useful information in the subject areas covered.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for the novice trader/investor.......2000-07-26

This book by Peter Alexander will provide valuable insight, information, advice and guidance to the new or aspiring trader in either stocks or commodities. The author is knowledgeable and well qualified to offer such guidance, being an experienced stock and currency trader, and a long-time developer of financial software.

The title strikes me as misleading. Although substantial coverage is devoted to issues relevant to trading by computer, the book also covers many other topics which the new trader will find to be helpful as well. A more apt title might have been The Complete Guide to Issues of Concern to the New Trader.

Important issues covered include commission costs, liquidity, volatility, markets (and exchanges) to avoid, the relative pros and cons of daytrading versus position trading, money management, technical analysis and basic trading system design.

Since the book was written in 1997 it does not cover the current trends in online trading or the newest financial websites.

The author's style of writing is free flowing, interesting, and easy to understand. His colorful phrases and metaphors are, in places, reminiscent of Elder's Trading for a Living. I recommend the book to new traders looking for guidance and useful information in the subject areas covered.

                      Book Description

In an environment in which company failure and loss of creditability have been common, trust has become essential for sustaining organizational success and effectiveness. While relating to the softer side of business it has become clear that financial stability and success are dependent upon sound business relationships that depend upon trust both within and between organizations. This book explains what can be achieved when trust is present, what can happen when it's not and how to develop a strong culture of trust within an organization. It contains a comprehensive examination of trust in society and in business relationships and how this is critical for business success.

If you have heard of Henry George or Green Tax Shifting, this book is for you. It appears to me to be the broadest introduction to issues related to land-value taxation at the turn of the millenium.

For those not familiar with the concept, land-value taxation is based on the fact that taxes on buildings discourage development, while undertaxing land encourages speculation which in turn encourages urban sprawl. By untaxing buildings and increasing taxes on land, proponents of LVT hope to spur development in urban areas while reducing sprawl, concentration of landownership, and absentee landlordism. Most LVT proponents also argue in favor of untaxing labor and capital investment. Taken to it's logical extreme, Henry George proposed in the late 1800s that the tax on land should be a "single tax" to replace all other taxes. Most modern-day Georgists do not go so far as to suggest that LVT should be a "single tax". This book explains the concept as it is applied today.

The book attacks questions about LVT policy from all angles. Articles by notable researchers and writers in the field discuss the history, implementation, ethics, and psychology of LVT. An in-depth article examines the impact of LVT on farming. Other articles by Nobel laureate William Vickrey extend the concept from taxing land-use to taxing traffic and pollution. Basically, if you have any interest in LVT, this book is the place to start.

A couple of the essays have some serious math in them, but not nearly enough to turn away the interested reader. With a basic (undergrad intro-level) understanding of economics and calculus, I found it possible (though not easy) to get the gist of the mathematical essays, which are easily skipped over by those without the inclination. My only complaint with the volume is that I don't think four essays by the highly regarded Vickrey were really necessary. Two of them contain considerable overlap.

In all other respects this is an excellent collection of relevant and timely material.

In George Washington: Uniting a Nation, Don Higginbotham argues that Washington's greatest contribution to American life was creating a sense of American unity. In clear and concise prose, Higginbotham shows that as Revolutionary War commander, proponent of the Constitution, and President, George Washington focused on building national identity and erecting institutions to cement the fledgling nation.

One of the brightest and most outrageous luminaries at the court of Charles II, he was to drink himself to death by the age of 33. Famous for the obscenity of his amorous poems, he may also penned some of the most moving, witty and lyrical love poetry of all time. Lamb rescues the man who blazed through his short life in glory and tragedy, genius and despair.

4 out of 5 stars A must read prior to seeing The Libertine .......2006-01-07

This is an in depth look at the Earl of Rochester's life and death. I have seen the movie twice (at the premiere and then the following short run it had in LA prior to its wide release in January 06) I loved the movie and plan to see it again. I found it extremely helpful to read this book and suggest that anyone planning to see the film read this first! Rochester was a brilliant man and it is a sad but fascinating story. Some of the poems are a little difficult but that doesn't matter. The information you will gain on the man is invaluable to a better understanding of him in the movie. It is too bad that the movie doesn't include more about his children which are barely mentioned. He was a loving father and cared very deeply for them and his wife despite his debauched lifestyle. The only reason it didn't get 5 stars is that there are numerous typos. I imagine that whomever proofed the final galleys was not interested in the text and merely glossed over it.

2 out of 5 stars Apples, Oranges, History and Conjecture.......2006-01-02

This is probably one of the most useless biographies of Rochester in print. The bibliography is rather dismal and, while the scholarship is adequate, there is nothing available in it that cannot be better found in Greene's Lord Rochester's Monkey or The Debt to Pleasure.

Most galling is the author's chronic harping on Rochester's alcoholism as a means to understand his verse. Last time I was in any institution of higher learning, fanciful modern analysis did not equate to literary criticism. Yes, we all know Rochester was a prodigious drinker in a time of prodigious drinkers. Lamb goes on for pages as though explaining what portion of the AA banner Rochester falls under can really pinpoint his genius. He forgets that the 17th century was a world of drink. Farmers started their day with a pound of bacon and pints of small beer. When observed in context with his time, Lamb utterly fails to make his case, saying more about himself, perhaps, than Rochester.

While his "findings" may have some small merit, they are not by any means the 'way' to either understand Rochester in the context of his world, or his poetry, which is transcendent of time, drink, or illness, venereal or otherwise.

Worse, there is a smug misogeny throughout the entire volume that set my teeth completely on edge. Lamb refers to "female students" and "women readers" with a condescension that is deplorable. His editor should be catisgated for not expurging such passages. I do not recall that gender had any bearing on scholarly literary analysis.

All in all, as a serious student of Rochester's poetry, I was insulted and felt swindled by a book that purports to be a biography and reads like a 12-step advertisement.

Pass on this and instead, read Lord Rochester's Monkey and The Debt to Pleasure. This is a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars This one feels like the author really knew the person.......2005-08-22

This is an excellent biography of John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester, the character Johnny Depp plays in "The Libertine."

I've read several books about Wilmot in the past two years, and I have enjoyed this more, gotten more out of it, and feel I have finally gotten a handle on the man who was so brilliant and so tragic.

The author, Jeremy Lamb, didn't just sit in some ivory tower, he traveled to where the Earl lived, worked and died. He has quotes from his contemporaries, his letters, his poetry and prose. And this is all very cleverly woven into a fascinating and gripping story of the Earl's life. Unlike the other rather scholarly works I've read, this one gets right into the personality of Wilmot, dissecting it, but not in a dry removed manner, rather it's as if you have an insight into the intriguing and paradoxical Earl.

I suggest you get this book if you want to have a more intimate glimpse into not only the life of John Wilmot, but his period in history and the fascinating people he lived with, loved, and even hated.
