Book Description

From a lowly job in the plastics division of GE to the position of chief executive of this $60 billion company, Jack Welch has probably climbed the corporate ladder farther and faster than anyone else.

Now readers can go behind the scenes to find out what makes him tick in Business the Jack Welch Way. This new book traces the successful career--and uncovers the successful business strategies--of the man who's often called the most powerful CEO in America.

What does he most value? How does he compare running gigantic GE to operating a corner grocery store? How did he transform this stodgy company into an exciting and dynamic one? And why is he lauded as a Renaissance man and yet nicknamed, pejoratively, "neutron Jack"? Readers will learn the answers to these questions (and plenty more) as the book unfolds the 10 key secrets of this incredible turnaround king.

Business the Jack Welch Way is part of a new series that charts the rise of business superstars Welch, Richard Branson, Bill Gates, and Rupert Murdoch. The Business Way Series looks at their deals, schemes, and dreams, revealing how each planned his career, crushed his competitors, and ended up on top. It supplies both a valuable insight into the ingredients of success and a concise source of important lessons for the next generation of winners.

4 out of 5 stars Jack is an inspiration!.......2002-02-01

Behind the complicated practices of the business world stand the simplicities of Jack Welch's philosophy. Here's a simple "How to" book that tells the story of 'what it takes to grow a successful business' all guided by Jack Welch's resume tales. Great read filled with anecdotes.

4 out of 5 stars A decent overview, but perhaps a bit deceptive.......1999-08-28

The book is a quick read about how Jack Welch manages. At least how the author thinks he manages. The author cobbles these thoughts from articles and other sources. For the most part it works--the book gives good insights into leadership and motivation. But a lot of it might be deceptive. For instance, the author takes a principle that Jack Welch has espoused in the past, and then fills in the details with his own related thoughts, and those of other management gurus. So, often times you are actually learning what someone else thinks about the topic--not Jack Welch's opinion. As long as this is taken into consideration, the book provides interesting lessons on how to manage and motivate people.

    Book Description

The sixth volume in the Oxford Law Colloquium Series analyses the workings of, and problems associated with, commercial remedies. The book adopts the format of a collection of essays by leading academics, each with a response from a practitioner offering an insight into how the different elements of this subject are dealt with in practice. Beginning with a discussion of compensatory damages, the first Part then turns to limitations on compensation, and concludes with a re-evaluation of the SAAMCO principle. The second Part examines restitution and punishment, with particular focus on proprietary restitution for unjust enrichment and the restitution of profits made by a breach of contract. The final Part looks at how the law on agreed remedies might develop, analyses the impact of the Human Rights Act 1993 on litigation between private parties, and concludes with a consideration of commercial remedies in the conflict of laws. This is a highly topical area of law and Commercial Remedies makes a significant contribution to the debate.

4 out of 5 stars The Culture Business: the art of creating fine distractions.......2002-05-22

by Gina Merlin --- THIS BOOK REVIEW WAS ORIGINALLY WRITTEN FOR THE CANADIAN ARTS PRESENTING ASSOCIATION (CAPACOA) NEWSLETTER, FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS INDUSTRY (05/2002). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Today more than ever, performing arts organizations are faced with unfamiliar challenges, and arts administrators are re-examining the way we manage cultural business. What a headache, then, if you're looking for help on the shelves of the library and all the management resources seem to just miss the aesthetic mark, skirting the very issues that are at the core of the cultural businesses you represent. In Dag Björkegren's The Culture Business: Management Strategies for the Arts-Related Business, we at last have a book on management that is useful with in the context of the arts. --- In a way, The Culture Business is a wake-up call for arts managers and consultants who still espouse traditional, broad-sweeping management strategies for cultural businesses. Cultural products, Björkegren insists, require a different frame of reference altogether, one that has been largely ignored in management circles so far. --- Björkegren's position is that most research available in the field of business management is so clinical, so methodological and so 'set in its ways,' that it can ultimately only establish well-known facts. He affirms that typical organization and management theory has little bearing on the everyday business of selling of aesthetic experiences and he warns companies to beware of highly structured management strategies that place unfair expectations on arts-producing organizations. --- The Culture Business describes two strategies for cultural industries - one aesthetic, the other commercial - used by arts decision-makers to reduce uncertainty. The book features comprehensive case studies that delve into the specific ways these approaches are used, offering practical solutions and lessons that might be learned. --- According to Björkegren, the million-dollar conundrum in the arts is that there is no way to define how the art product should or will be used. The audience transforms the meaning of the product so much, he writes, that 'the production of art becomes the production of meaning.' In this way, he suggests, arts companies are actually in the business of selling potential meanings, and not finished products. Further, what works for one type of cultural product or company won't necessarily work for another, and some types of culture business are only successful using a combination of aesthetic and commercial considerations. --- The Culture Business responds to a recognized need for situation-specific and firm-adjusted theories for arts management. Björkegren sets the stage for further research in this discipline and provides the reader with the tools to approach business challenges in the arts without fear. The limitation of the book lies in the fact that his examples exclude, for the most part, the specifics of the performing arts. --- Ironically, the omission actually supports Björkegren's core assertion, that you can't paint all industries with the same brush, even within the cultural industries. His choice to focus on the publishing, film and recording industries was likely because of the availability of information or the fact that performing arts is even an less tangible (ie - more complicated) than products like CDs or books, but there are similarities. Be warned though (performing arts managers): you still might get that 'hey what about me' feeling while reading this book since its bulk is in three middle chapters devoted in detail to each of the industries studied. Still, The Culture Business represents an approximation far better than most in its genre and it is, quite admittedly, a beginning. Now that the culture cat is out of the closet, hopefully, a proper framework for performing arts business specifically will be established soon.

What a let down. The author is basically selling a philospohy. See tells a story about her experience, how she wanted things to be different, and how she broke the law (check kitting, but she doesn't seem to think that was wrong). She seems to believe that if we think good thoughts .... I agree with her ideas (it would be great if we could trust each other), but she has NO DATA to support them. She keeps going back to the one example in her life to draw lots of conclusions. This tape was a waste of my time ;-(

From the supplier: Shifts in tax burdens due to a consumption tax have been exaggerated, as shown by statistical analysis of the common data used in such estimates. A cash-basis burden measure is used, which consists of the ratio of realized cash tax liability to realized cash income. Results indicate that common estimates based upon residual methods are biased toward regressivity. The results are valid for sales taxes, value added taxes or excise taxes if these taxes use estimates of income and consumption distribution.

                        Book Description

Includes dozens of photos from German collections, covers literally every aspect of Hitler's life from his success after he came to power in 1933 to his self-destruction. Davidson describes in detail Hitler's stratagems in reviving morale and undoing the inequitable treaties imposed on Germany after World War I and his shrewd moves to take advantage of the fatal miscalculations of the coalition that had been aligned against the Reich. Once Hitler had brutally improved Germany's desperate state, there followed mortal errors and fateful mistakes of judgment arising form his own inadequacies. Compelling, well-researched, and eminently readable, The Unmaking of Adolf Hitler strives to explain how and why Hitler's empire collapsed from his own actions.

                        Book Description

There are plenty of books on dying, most of them treatises by experts or tributes by family members written mainly for their own catharsis. But until now there has been precious little the average young person would want to read.

Now, through a true story that has already profoundly affected thousands, author Daniel Hallock engages the generation least prepared for life's inevitable end. Six Months to Live really isn't about dying at all, it's about how our lives can take on new meaning when we live in the awareness that our days here are numbered.

All of us, whatever our age, are touched by death, whether that of a friend or family member, old or too young, sudden or painfully drawn-out. Each death reminds us of the frailty of our own existence, so we avoid these unsettling speed bumps on our road to success and longevity. How different it could be if we realized how much the dying can teach us about how to live.

When Matt Gauger was diagnosed with terminal cancer a month before his wedding, he fought back with everything from chemo to prayer. But more importantly, he let cancer transform his approach to life, far beyond the necessary “coming to terms,” “learning to cope,” and “letting go.” By the time the disease destroyed his body, he had found such certainty of meaning and purpose that death held no terror for him.

Six Months to Live isn't just Matt's story, though, but that of the friends and family that surrounded him during his final struggle, and how the experience changed each of them. In intimate detail, Matt's wife, parents, brother, doctor, pastor and peers tell how they struggled to accept his impending death.

Daniel Hallock's candid account will encourage readers to face (rather than avoid) life's most important questions, and help them to live their own lives to the full.

This book made me feel sad and happy all at the same time. Matt a young man given a short time to live after being diagnosed with cancer, doesn't shun away the world but opens himself to everything. He becomes very spiritual and in touch with God through his illness. I had a very hard time being able to put the
book down. The way his family, friends, and community reacted is incredible, they were very compassionate and supportive. I would suggest this book to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars Death, Stared Down.......2001-03-26

A 22-year-old's battle against cancer might seem an unlikely topic for an uplifting book -- but Six Months to Live is certainly that. It's the story of Matt, a young man who, faced with death, refused to quit living. Matt wasn't a hero, and the writer of his story doesn't make him out to be one. Six Months to Live steers clear of the cliches and catch-phrases we often use to help us "make sense" of terminal illness. Instead, the book is realistic: it shows us Matt's darkest hours as well as his triumphs; his doubts as well as his faith. That's why, at the end, the reader is not left feeling Matt's life was "wasted"; rather, that it was used for a cause bigger than any one of us. We're all dead men, the movie Gladiator reminds us. Like as not, we don't get to choose how or when we die. But we all can choose how we meet death. Six Months to Live can help us choose well. Thanks to Matt.
