Book Description
Learn how to develop models for classification, prediction, and customer segmentation with the help of Data Mining for Business Intelligence
In today's world, businesses are becoming more capable of accessing their ideal consumers, and an understanding of data mining contributes to this success. Data Mining for Business Intelligence, which was developed from a course taught at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Sloan School of Management, and the University of Maryland's Smith School of Business, uses real data and actual cases to illustrate the applicability of data mining intelligence to the development of successful business models.
Featuring XLMiner, the Microsoft Office Excel add-in, this book allows readers to follow along and implement algorithms at their own speed, with a minimal learning curve. In addition, students and practitioners of data mining techniques are presented with hands-on, business-oriented applications. An abundant amount of exercises and examples are provided to motivate learning and understanding.
Data Mining for Business Intelligence:
* Provides both a theoretical and practical understanding of the key methods of classification, prediction, reduction, exploration, and affinity analysis
* Features a business decision-making context for these key methods
* Illustrates the application and interpretation of these methods using real business cases and data
This book helps readers understand the beneficial relationship that can be established between data mining and smart business practices, and is an excellent learning tool for creating valuable strategies and making wiser business decisions.
Customer Reviews:
An Excellent Introduction, Works with Excel.......2007-03-19
Data mining is the extraction of useful information from large amounts of data. Perhaps the best example of this is Amazon. If you go to Amazon to look at a book, you'll find such tidbits of information as a section on the page headlined 'Customers who bought this item also bought' and another 'What do customers ultimately buy after viewing this item?'
That's datamining, dozens or hundreds, or thousands of people looked at the page about this item. Then they went on to take these other actions. Among all the data that Amazon has collected they mine their database and pull out information to fill in these blocks.
This book, intended for MBA level students gives an excellent introduction to data mining. It further includes access to an Excel add-in called XLMiner that is specifically set up to allow the student to use Excel to learn how data mining is done.
The one thing I would ask the authors to do in their next edition is to provide a brief review of the commercially available data mining software products that are available. If not all of the software, perhaps just the top half dozen or so. In real life we aren't going to use Excel for data mining, our data resides in a database somewhere.
Condensed Discussion of DataMining.......2007-02-10
This book discusses some of the techniques used
in Data Mining.
It goes into Data Exploration as well as Evaluating
Classification and Predictive Performance.
Some of the more advanced techniques such as
Neural Nets and Cluster Analysis are
also discussed.

From the authors:.......2007-01-27
This book got its start as notes for a data mining class that one of us (Nitin Patel) was teaching at MIT, and was completed while another of us (Galit Shmueli) was teaching a similar course at Maryland. Both courses were part of an MBA program. We found that, while there are a lot of books on data mining, there were none that actually gave business students the skills and tools to implement data mining algorithms. So we set ourselves the task of writing a book that (1) provides real data sets with a business decision-making context and a hands-on orientation , (2) provides a theoretical and practical understanding of the key data mining methods of classification, prediction, data reduction and exploration at a level that is appropriate and useful for MBA's, and (3) bundles a powerful version of a commercial data mining tool that works in Excel (XLMiner). For this reason, we think our book will be appropriate not just for students, but also for business analysts with a quantitative orientation, on, indeed, anyone who wants to learn data mining via self-study. Have we succeeded? You be the judge! - P. Bruce (for G. Shmueli and N. Patel)

Focused advice.......2004-05-02
This book covers most of the major types of transactions that are common these days. There are discussions of initial venture capital, roll-ups, LBOs, and partnership transactions. I focused on the chapter that dealt with the initial funding of a start-up. There is a checklist at the end of the chapter that will help the entrepreneur address all of the critical issues. Basically this chapter is a primer that will keep the entrepreneur from making the "first timer" mistakes.
If the reader wants a text that goes into greater depth and expands the discussion to include less typical transactions, they will have to look elsewhere. I recommend Deal Terms by Wilmerding. If the reader wants a desk reference that covers most typical transactions, this is a great candidate.

Book Description
Just as "spin" has taken over politics in America, so too has it come to define the long bull market on Wall Street. The booming trade in stocks, which has become a national obsession, has produced an insatiable demand for financial intelligence - and plenty of new, highly paid players eager to supply it. On television and the Internet, commentators and analysts are not merely reporting the news, they are making news in ways that provide huge windfalls for some investors and crushing losses for others. And they often traffic in rumor, speculation, and misinformation that hit the market at warp speed. Howard Kurtz, widely recognized as America's best media reporter, and the man who revealed the inner workings of the Clinton administration's press operation in the national bestseller Spin Cycle, here turns his skeptical eye on the business-media revolution that has transformed the American economy. He uncovers the backstage pressures at television shows like CNBC's Squawk Box and CNN's Moneyline; at old-media bastions like The Wall Street Journal and Business Week, which are racing to keep up with the twenty-four-hour news cycle; and at Internet start-ups like TheStreet.com and JagNotes, real-time operations in the very arena where fortunes are made and lost with stunning swiftness. Bombarded by all this white noise, who among the fortune tellers can investors really trust? Kurtz provides an indispensable guide with this eye-opening account of an unseen world, based on eighteen months of shadowing the most influential, colorful, and egotistical people in business and journalism. Among the people we meet in its pages are: * Ron Insana, Maria Bartiromo, David Faber, Lou Dobbs, and the other famous faces of cable TV * The manic king-of-all-media Jim Cramer, who juggles four different identities - Wall Street trader, television commentator, columnist, and Internet entrepreneur - with wildly varying degrees of success * Shoe-leather reporters Steve Lipin, Chris Byron, and Gene Marcial, whose exclusives drive up stocks or quickly deflate them * Superstar analysts Ralph Acampora, Abby Joseph Cohen, and Henry Blodget, whose predictions make the Dow and Nasdaq gyrate * Internet CEOs Kim Polese and Kevin O'Connor, who struggle to ride the media tiger while promoting their high-flying companies No one has ever reported from inside the Wall Street media machine or laid bare the bitter feuds, cozy friendships, and whispered leaks that move the market. Kutrz exposes the disturbing conflicts of interest among the brokerage analysts and fund managers whose words can boost or bash stocks - thanks to scoop-hungry journalists who rarely question whether these gurus are right or wrong. And he chronicles the journalistic hype that helped propel Net stocks into the stratosphere until they began plummeting back to earth. In a time of head-spinning volatility, The Fortune Tellers is essential reading for all of us who gamble our savings in today's overheated stock market.

From the bestselling author of "Spin Cycle" comes a one-of-a-kind book that takes the reader inside the Wall Street media machine and lays bare the behind-the-scenes hype and human foibles that move markets and make or break fortunes.
Customer Reviews:
An interesting look inside the crazy world of Wall Street and the media.......2006-10-02
This book is an interesting narrative that looks at the end of the internet bubble and details the events leading up to the tech crash of 2000. It is told mostly through the eyes of various media figures-from CNBC anchors to their rivals at CNNfn to Jim Cramer. For someone who isn't familiar with that time in the market this book offers a great deal of insight-for people who either experienced it firsthand or already know something about it there is probably very little new here.
This book makes for an interesting read. Despite already being familiar with the events covered in this book I was entertained, especially while reading about such colorful figures as Jim Cramer and Mark Haines. The book isn't particularly well-written-the changes in tense (which I'm not sure are always done correctly) are often annoying-but is nevertheless engaging and flows well. This is not a book I would recommend for anything other than a casual read, though as such it is probably worth a look.
fast paced, no-analysis, pure narration.......2004-09-09
In a remarkably well-narrated book, Kurtz, highlights the inordinate amount of power TV business program anchors and their guests have on stock volatility. Though the book focuses on the "bubble" era, the mechanisms of stock price manipulation, intended or coincidental, are equally applicable today as it did in the Internet craze.
Despite the well narrated story lines including many of the better known financial journalists, the book does not build on the few themes introduced in the first chapter itself. After a couple of chapters, the author's take on CNBC anchors' behavior on market movement is predictable. However, the story regarding the development of CNBC, Dobb/CNNfn, Fox, bloomberg, is entertaining, though wouldnt pass as a comprehensive history guide. The focus on Kramer for most part of the book is a bit annoying as well, though the use of thestreet.com's story reveals some interesting aspects of mergers/buy-outs, etc.
In short, a fairly good read, not a great level of details, but clearly highlights (over and over) the impact of journalists on stock prices (as if you needed this book to tell you), intertwined with good story lines on TV persona and journalists.
excelent summary of the financial history of the early '00.......2004-07-29
I read this book years ago when it was a best seller. I bought it on the strength of the reviews of the people written about in this book like Kramer, the CNBC Squakbox people, numerous high profile analysts. They had a positive review of how the book came out, and so I bought and read it. I don't read the Wall Street Journal all the time so the content of this book was educating for me. Howard Kurtz has a show in CNN, he is a media critic, so his take on the financial media and players in it has a degree of credibility. However this book is dated now, there have been many developments since this book hit the bookstores. The time I read this I thought it was wonderful that a summary of the recent financial past was available in a very well written book.
Interesting but not needed for the home collection.......2002-11-24
This book offered some interesting insight into how analyst news and forecasts effect the stock market. The main message I came away with is "don't believe the hype". If you are looking to bolster your confidence in your own ability to make stock picks in the face of contridictory market analysts then take the time to listen to this book. If you're not interested in an autobiogrophy of famous Wall Street gurus then skip it. You can get the same information and much more valuable insight from reading some of the Peter Lynch books.
Too much James Cramer, not enough Wall Street.......2002-06-18
This is mostly a minibio of James Cramer with a lot of attention paid on the side to CNBC and Maria Bartiromo specifically. If you're very interested in Cramer, you can just go get his actual memoir. As for me, I am interested in Wall Street and the system of disseminating and evaluating information and opinion about stocks -- the conflicts of interest, the conventions, the legal rules, the strengths and weaknesses. I don't know how you can analyze those issues without spending time on the role and motivations of key research analysts, the position of the SEC and the communication conventions between companies and journalists, hedge fund and other money managers and the SEC. Any book claiming to treat these issues and focusing on 1998-2000 would have to deal extensively by the phenomenon represented by Mary Meeker and Harry Blodgett, which this book does not. The book focuses disproportionately and without explanation on a few TV personalities without treating the overall issue. Too bad for me.
It would have been fine if the title had been accurate -- something about James Cramer. Or even "Crazy Days at CNBC."
The data does not synthesize into any larger recommendation or theme. It comes across as an accurate chronology without analysis. The writing style is correspondingly dry.

Book Description
This book takes a new approach to ethics by focusing on the kinds of dilemmas that confront people almost daily on the job. The author's unique contribution is to meld philosophy with everyday decisionmaking, offering the reader a common sense approach to making ethical decisions. Mary Guy introduces ten core values which surround ethical dilemmas, demonstrating the way in which personnel can sensitize themselves to the values involved in a problem and reach a solution which maximizes the important values. Real-life case examples illustrate ethical dilemmas that involve personnel practices, organizing strategies, reporting functions, supervisory practices, whistleblowing, and more. Throughout, the author emphasizes the kinds of concerns which confront the vast majority of employees--from ambitious entry-level personnel to top executives. Realistic in tone, the discussion acknowledges the inevitable need to make compromises, showing how to optimize ethical values situations that arise on the job and for which no formal rules exist. In her introductory chapter, Guy defines ethics, clarifies the relationship between ethical behavior and morality, and presents the ten guiding values that serve as the foundation for ethical decisions. Turning to a focus on decisionmaking, she explores such issues as the theoretical framework for rational decisionmaking, rational decisionmaking in real life, the application of ethical analysis to decisionmaking, and the definition of ethical decisionmaking. The four subsequent chapters present case studies of problems that personnel commonly encounter. In each case, Guy examines the ethical issues involved, applies various scenarios for reaching an ethical decision, and demonstrates the tension that exists among ethical decisionmaking, coping with daily exigencies, and accommodating the preferences of stakeholders. The concluding chapter summarizes the relationship between ethics and decisionmaking and offers a prescription for ensuring ethical decisionmaking throughout the organization. Must reading for managers in business, government, and not-for-profit organizations, this book is also an excellent supplemental text for advanced undergraduate and graduate level courses in business and public administration.

This book presents in simple and concise form the complex U.S. tax laws that impact Americans living overseas. The book addresses most of the common tax situations expats encounter, using numerous examples to explain. The appendix contains the 1999 federal tax forms and instructions most often needed by expats as well as IRS contact numbers and other important tax information. Also included is a summary of each state's tax laws relating to overseas income.
Customer Reviews:
Check the IRS' website first.......2003-12-14
I have been living abroad for several years, and purchased this book when my tax situation became more complicated (i.e. when my income passed the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion). Although the information in the book is helpful, I found that the large majority of what I needed was available on the IRS' website, which is very user-friendly, contains a wealth of valuable information, and most importantly is free.
In particular, IRS Publication 54 "Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad" seemed to answer all of my questions, and there are hundreds of other publications available from the IRS that are very helpful, are written in plain English and contain many useful examples. Of course, if your tax situation is extremely complex, you may need more help, but in that case, you probably will need to seek recourse to a sophisticated tax advisor as opposed to a book.
The writing and organization is excellent.......2000-11-02
I am an expat, and I found answers to many of my questions in this work book. I am not knowledgable enough in tax law to pass judgement on the quality of the information presented here. Expat tax law is complicated and intricate, involving many special cases which may not apply to you. The work book overcomes this through careful organization of chapters and topics. It is possible to locate topics of interest without having wade through large amounts of unrelated material. I gave this work book the fifth star for it's spiral binding, which makes it much easier to work with.
Title? What Title?.......2000-03-18
This book is an extremely helpful resource for expat tax issues. This subject is very difficult for an individual without a big company taking care of all the details. If I had found this book earlier, it would have saved me dozens of hours scouring the internet for relavent information. Note that this isn't a book to help you figure out the best way to wangle yourself into tax-freedom. You should get this book well before moving, use it to help you plan and then visit a professional - but at least you won't be paying a professional to cover the groundwork.

Book Description
This book presents a practical introduction to the new U.S. withholding tax rules, which changed radically following new U.S. Treasury Department regulations and other guidance. The cost of taxpayers' compliance with these changes has been astronomical. The author provides an authoritative and
accessible description of the tax and reporting requirements, and makes a number of recommendations on compliance based on experience with the new rules so far. New U.S. Withholding Tax Rules guides the reader through the maze with 'real world' examples and diagrams, and includes a number of
practical resources for further reference.
Customer Reviews:
Bruce Zagaris -- Thumbs Up.......2003-08-13
This book discusses the radical change in new U.S. Treasury Department regulations and other guidance on withholding taxes on payments to foreign individuals and foreign corporations of interest, dividends, rent, salaries, wages, premiums, annuities, compensations, remunerations, emoluments, or other fixed or determinable annual or periodical gains, profits, and similar income (FDAP income).
Bruce's many years of experience in advising clients on international tax planning, especially the use of foreign trusts and complex structures, makes the book a valuable resource to those working in the area. His ability to conceptualize visually most of the salient issues enables him to explain difficult issues in sensible and practical ways.
The relevance of the book on withholding issues is indicated by the fact that in 1998, the most recent data available, annual payments to foreign persons surpassed US$124 billion. They were reported on more than 2.4 million information returns. The amount of tax reported totaled approximately US$2.4 billion.
The book contains a simplified description of the tax and reporting requirements. It emphasizes "real world" situations that would help U.S. and foreign institutions that must deal with the withholding requirements decide how to handle many issues and how to reorganize their business practices. Of course, the new withholding requirements have created diverse problems for customers and clients of many banks and trust companies.
As the book observes, there will be a continuous stream of withholding developments from diverse directions. Therefore, in spite of the constant stream of promises from legislators of tax policy to simplify matters, the withholding tax requirements show how increasingly complex tax law is becoming. In fact, the growing complexity of withholding, the fact that requirements are written in technical tax terms, and the lack of translations for foreign professionals further complicate the ability and cost of compliance.
The lack of plain guidance opens the door to practitioners, such as Mr. Bruce, to develop practical guides. For the next few years at least, until developments make it outdated, this book will prove useful for legal and accounting advisers, private bankers, trust officers, investment advisers, and professors and students. In addition, compliance officers responsible for training the staffs of financial institutions, as they prepare for the first audits, also will benefit from the book.

This little collection of Roosevelt's speeches and essays gives a wonderful taste for the jingo President's beliefs in a Strenuous Life of hard work, manly virtues and manifest destiny. As a historian, I'm fascinated that this is being marketed as speaking to today's Americans. Roosevelt's comments on the role of white middle-class Protestant women as the breeders of a virile race and his exhortations to embrace 'righteous war' might seem a bit strange as current-day advice, stemming as they do from Teddy's concerns with forcing the Spanish out of Cuba and with 'race suicide,' the belief that white Protestants were being out-bred by Catholic immigrants and African-Americans. For those interested in the Establishment position on those issues in 1900, however, or in Roosevelt himself-- some of these were speeches and the rhythm of them gives you a wonderful idea of what they must have sounded like being delivered-- this is a valuable resource.
A Powerful Book (Speech).......1999-02-15
This is a documented speech by "Teddy." If you believe that life owes you something as opposed to working hard and earning your keep, then you must read this book. If you are a self-starter and want to "make a name for yourself" through hard work, this book/speech will get you excited. It is a must read -- even for children. Hard work does pay off!

Bully!.......2006-12-19
I wrote The Wisdom of *Eleanor* Roosevelt, not *Teddy* Roosevelt. Check the editor's names. We share a first name, but not a last name. Why not buy both, like a set. Donald Wigal

"Flashlight Walking" will help us in the dark days coming..........2003-09-17
I have read "Flashlight Walking" twice in the last few hours... to myself and then aloud with my wife.
We personally knew Bill and Cathy some ten years ago before any of the dark days came into their lives. They had a wonderful love for their family members... and everyone they knew was adopted into the "family". More than that this couple had a special ministry for the ill, expecially those confined and elderly... we had witnessed their caring in a hundred ways and more.
This book is important to us... not because we knew Bill and Cathy. This book is important because it helps teach us how best to face the coming days in the conclusion of our lives. We now better understand the dark clouds coming into every family... sooner or later. We need to write a love letter to our children to be delivered after our passing.
We better understand uncertainty, and how God in mercy gives us just one day at a time.
Thank you, Cathy
American Dream Deferred.......2003-08-20
This is an amazingly personal account of tragedy and renewal in the midst of the Enron layoff. At a time when Bill Peterson needed all of his strength to fight cancer, Enron laid him off by phone, losing all of his benefits in the process. Rather than get down, his family helped him rally for the fight of his life with dignity and grace. A wonderful read for anyone facing cancer with a family member, interested in what really happened to most people at Enron, or simply looking for a bit of magical inspiration.
