Workplace Privacy addresses such issues as:
-- conducting pre-employment inquiries;
-- monitoring employees' telephone, e-mail and computer use;
-- conducting workplace investigations;
-- controlling employee behavior on and off duty; and

Customer Reviews:
Not the worlds best by far...........2005-03-23
As a professional bartender I have to say this book does not deserve its title. It has some good anecdotes and stories along with the authors opinion of good bars in various cities. It has a smattering of drinks and some history. An okay book if you just want to set up a home bar but if you want to work as a bartender its just too lightweight. I would only recommend buying this if you were going to buy a book such as Seagrams Bartending Guide as well. In fact, buy the Seagrams book first and if you still want more maybe then you should try this book. I'll be sending my copy back for sure.
great book!.......2001-12-27
This book is great. Very informative and entertaining as well. I love the stories that the different bartenders tell throughout the book. There is a lot of great trivia and little known facts. I would have given it 5 stars except I didn't completely agree with some of the choices for the top bars in various cities, but that it being really picky. If I could, I would have given it 4 and 3/4 stars. Otherwise, I thought it was perfect. Great for someone just setting up a bar at home or even if you already have one you will learn a lot either way. Buy it for yourself or give it as a gift. It will be very appreciated.
Fantastic history and mixing instructions for a few drinks.......2001-09-24
This guide takes the sensible approach of instructing aspiring house bartenders in a variety of ways of mixing the most common drinks in America. In addition to lengthy and entertaining histories of each drink, celebrity favorites, anecdotes from experienced bartenders, and, of course, multiple recipes for each drink, this guide imparts a sense of respect for liquor and for the art of making delicious beverages.
All the bartenders in this book, as well as the editors, forcefully condemn drinking to get drunk, instead treating alcohol as an incomparable treat to be used sparingly and only in the most delicious recipes possible. Thus, Long Island Iced Teas are denigrated for being immensely alcoholic with no particularly interesting flavor of their own.
My complaint regarding this work is personal: that the editors only treat snazzy, modern drinks is sensible from the perspective that such drinks are what the public is interested in learning about, but it leaves people with more exotic tastes or an interest in the popular drinks of bygone days left without much information. Still, I have found this guide otherwise brilliant.
not just another recipe book.......2001-09-09
This book was a thoroughly enjoyable read. Not just another recipe book, this guide actually contain history for classic drinks and advice and humor from bartenders from around the world. The authors covers some very classic drinks like the martinis, margaritas, highballs, and shooters as well as variations on them and wild crazy drinks. I just finished bartending class and used this book extensively to get me started. It's a great book for beginners and seasoned bartenders.
The one you'll use.......2001-07-22
Of all the bar books I own, this is the one that I return to again and again - and the only one I actually sit down to enjoy reading. It is informative, well written, and interesting. If I have any criticism at all it is that it might have had a more attractive cover.

Book Description
The author granted some of the most famous insiders on Wall Street the protection of anonymity in order to procure their deepest and most frank views on the operation of the market. This book paints a startling portrait of how the prejudices of six different types of players-fundamentalists, insiders, cyclists, traders, efficient market believers, and transformational idea adherents-influence the market. Smith explains how new trends interact with these psychologies and draws a remarkable picture of how market behavior is inherently more human than technical.
Customer Reviews:
It is a useless book.......2002-01-13
I lost myself after reading this book. It is definately useless book to me. I regret I bought it which was purely based on the 5 stars review. I don't even know if the writer really understand the market. I think the author wrote this one purely because he wants to creat a book. I doubt if the author knows what he wrote. This book will waste our money and time.
A must read for anyone investing in the market.......2000-08-03
This is a must read for anyone who invests in the market. Forget all the other self-help books written by so-called experts. The experts will not help you in any way. But this book will help you understand what is really going on on Wall Street. This book is concise, informative, and quite brilliant.
Success and Survival on Wall Street: Understanding the Mind.......2000-02-12
Business Week, January 31, 2000, p. 20, in reviewing a score of new stock market says "My absoute favorite new investment book should be read by anyone eager to make a million in the market, and its author is no one you've heard of. Success and Survival on Wall Street: Understanding the Mind of the Market by Queens College sociologist Charles W. Smith... How..? By taking in Smith's insight....'You don't have to be a genius to survive on Wall Street, you just have to avoid being a fool.' This is a serious book clearly worth reading
The Best Book on Wall Street.......1999-09-29
This updated version of Charles W. Smith's book is one of the best, if not the best book on Wall Street I have ever read. I say this an investment professional with 25 years of experience, who has "Survived" and sometimes "Succeeded" on Wall Street.
After reading this book, I understood my own world better, as well as what drives "The mind of the market."
You can not go wrong with this book. This is a tip you should not ignore.
Book Description
Tragic Indifference is the gut-wrenching account of the biggest product liability case in history: the Ford-Firestone fiasco, where delaminating Firestone tires caused Ford Explorers to lose control and crash at highway speeds. The result was a massive recall, consumer panic, and congressional hearings. It all culminated in a lawsuit that would become a watershed for all future auto safety lawsuits.
In February 2000, reports began to surface of an alarming number of rollover cases involving Ford Explorers traveling on Firestone's Wilderness AT tire. As the stories drove a national frenzy of news coverage, no one seemed to know what was causing the devastation. Until one lawyer, who had been campaigning for years to get Ford to acknowledge the dangerous flaws in the design of the Explorer -- an engineering flaw greatly exacerbated by the use of Firestone's tires -- stepped forward to demand that Ford executives take responsibility for the lethal design of their trucks.
More than a courtroom drama, Tragic Indifference reveals the web of individual stories beneath the national headlines. Weaving together harrowing depictions of the accidents and their consequences with the stories of the men and women who labor to police the auto industry and its reckless cost-cutting, Tragic Indifference will transform the way you view the government, the courts, and the media. Above all, this book shows the price the public pays in wrecked and mangled lives when companies focus more on shaving costs than making quality products.
At the center of the story is Tab Turner, a charismatic trial attorney from Arkansas, who has made a career out of forcing Ford and other automakers to own up to their unsafe practices and to admit that they knowingly trade human lives for profits. Given the almost complete lack of government regulation over the auto industry, Turner has become, in essence, the court of last resort for victims of callous auto companies.
Tragic Indifference also recounts the struggles of Turner's client Donna Bailey, a single mother and outdoor enthusiast who led troubled teens on backpacking trips, as she fought back from the brink of death to confront those ultimately responsible for her accident. Her case became a benchmark for all others that followed.
Customer Reviews:
The indifference of Ford and Firestone to death........2006-01-10
I liked this book. I think it damns Firestone and Ford's policies of good manufacturing standards and design. I think it leans too heavily toward the lawyers and customers on this book, but it is evident these manufacturers did not have the best interests of the consumer in mind. It also paints the plaintiff's lawyers as do gooders, when most of these people are getting 40% of their clients settlements.
The Ford SUVs were clearly dangerous cars that should have been redesigned in their early product lifecycles. What Ford did by specifying a 26 PSI in the tires offset the stability problem and created another more serious problem. The friction these tires went through at the lower PSI resulted in tread separation. Throw in poor manufacturing standards and you have a situation that caused 300 deaths. The author should be commended for writing a readable account of what happened.
Since I worked for a tire manufacturer (Uniroyal-Goodrich), I found the explanation of tread separation rather simplistic. The author should have consulted a tire engineer rather than tire builders in detailing what effects tack has on a tire. Also lacking was what Firestone took out to reduce the tire weight. More detail needed to go into why the tires were unsafe, rather than just saying it was old rubber or not enough material.
Overall, this was a good book about poor manufacturing design and standards. If these companies really believed that Quality was Job 1, they would not have manufactured and sold these products.
an excellent account.......2004-07-25
Penenberg's account of Ford and Firestone and the battle to illuminate their malfeasance is driven by a transparent passion for justice. It is impossible not to become angered by the equally transparent desire of both corporations to put profits ahead of the wellbeing of the people who were killed or maimed by their products. It's not a new story in that regard, but this one is told so well, with such thorough research and excellent writing, that it ranks with the best of the genre. This is a fine fine book.
Passionate telling of the Explorer rollover issue.......2004-01-13
It is heart rending to read about the lives torn apart in these horrible accidents. Mr. Penenberg writes effectively and persuasively about the pain, loss, and struggle of those injured as well as the pain and struggle of their loved ones. However, his emotional style, while effective in producing sympathetic emotions, in the end undermines the case he is trying to make. Not that the case is necessarily wrong. It is just that he does not really prove it beyond an emotional conviction.
He does not use his journalistic detachment to let both sides speak and let the preponderance of the evidence fall where it may. The author wants to convince us that Ford is wrong (and I am not saying they are or aren't) and that the lawyers are good. A couple of examples about the lawyers: Early in the book he introduces Tab Turner has having a private jet, but not a flashy one - the author calls it a Plymouth with wings. A few pages later he reveals it to be a Cessna Citation. This is a very nice jet and Turner is a very very rich man who for all his protestations of not caring about fees gathers them by the truckload. And it isn't until the second half of the book that we are shown the fighting over fees and the skullduggery in getting the client to unwittingly sign a new contingency fee arrangement without her healthy caregivers around. It is sickening.
But we all love our own lawyers when they help and protect us (as we should), and we think the other guy's lawyers are scum (unless they lose). That is the way it goes. And friends eventually become targets of suits in the name of justice. Again, it is hard to take, but it happens.
I believe that the book would have been stronger if he would have actually presented both sides of this issue fairly and completely. While the emotions of the case would then be a bit more confused, the reader would be better equipped to make a fair and clearer judgment about the case rather than the one the author wants you to make.
We all despise corporate decisions that expose people to death and injury to save a few dollars or because of carelessness and callous disregard. But we also despise attorneys making huge fees from tragically injured clients and stepping on endless numbers of people, justice, and truth to claim those fees. It isn't that this is a bad book. Rather, it could have been stronger by being more objective. Almost certainly, Ford and Firestone would not have been very forthcoming for interviews. However, when I was reading I kept hoping for more complete information about the accidents from multiple perspectives. The book is worth reading if you are interested in this story, but I could have used less direction from the author on how I was supposed to feel and more information about the facts - not just the defense lawyers' arguments.
truly good reporting, terrifying subject!.......2004-01-08
I have always thought of Penenberg as the Michael Moore ("Bowling For Columbine", etc.) of investigative reporters/authors. He really, truly knows how to write page-turning revelations on his subjects (in this case, he's moved from the Stephen Glass case, to the auto industry) which are informative WITHOUT sacrificing style.
Sharp-edged Page Turner.......2004-01-02
Penenberg deserves congratulations for taking a story that could have been as dull as a stretch of Kansas highway and telling it so well it's hard to put the book down. The facts are all there, but the author has taken the time to lay them out artfully and judiciously. This has been an entertaining and elucidating read.

Will touch your heart.......2006-03-12
This is the true tale you bring out when your teen is complaining about not being able to go shopping, etc. Christine would do anything to live without Cystic Fibrosis. She does her best to live her dreams and we see her courage through her struggle come to life on the pages. What a wonderful tribute Jacquie Gordon wrote for her daughter. This book should inspire us all to reach for the stars and live each day like it might be our last.

Sad.......2005-05-12
I was saddened to read about Christines struggle and eventual death of cystic fibrosis. This book does a great job of showing you the decline, and we watch as her lungs deteriorate until there is no quality of life left. It was awful because she loved life so much and knew what was happening to her and what she was missing out on.
Some of the dialogue was a little tedious in the recreations so I would have done wothout some of that-but Christines beauty and strength really shined through.
A Captivating Life.......2004-12-19
I have read this book so many times that I had to buy a second copy-I now own the hardcover and softcover editions! I felt a 'kinship' with Christine from the very first page---we shared the same first name, was born around the same time, loved the same music and I was very familiar with the places Jacquie Gordon wrote about in this wonderful book. For anyone who grew up in the seventies this book will ring a familiar bell. You read of struggles, illness, but most of all you learn that Christine LIVED! Christine rung every ounce she could out of life and she certainly grasped the brass ring! She is a true inspiration to us all! This book brought a richness to my life and I thank Mrs. Gordon for sharing such a wonderful tribute. Christine (in her stardust) must still be singing!
Give Me One Wish.......2004-08-03
I have read the story and was brought to tears - but with so much laughter - Chris had something people try and get in their whole entire lives. Jackie I have somewhat of an understanding in having a child that is ill from a very young age. Chris is an insperation to parents and children. My son has had chronic asthma since he was four yrs old - and then 6 months ago he was diagnosed with a tumor on his spine the size of an orange. He went through surgery - all is well. The terror you must have felt - doing the hospital thing for years - I look up to you and your daughter - your book was very inspiring - makes the "I feel sorry for myself" feelings go away
major inspiration.......2001-07-08
I can't even begin to describe what an impact this book has had on me. I read it for the first time in 6th grade, and since then my entire frame of mind has changed. I've found that I really love things like Monty Python, 80s punk rock, the Muppets, and so much more. So it (this book) has changed me a lot in that way, but it also is such an inspiration because of the fact that Christine never really let her cystic fibrosis pull her down into the dumps. She had "spunk and a spirit" for life, and that in itself is something to admire. In the dozens of times that I've read my copy of this incredible story, I've laughed, I've cried, and I've felt like I can actually identify with Chris...she was a regular girl who just happened to have a fatal disease. Her mom (Jaquie Gordon, the author) caputured Chris's life in such an amazing way, and I wish I could thank her for being so willing to write about it and changing my outlook on life.
incredible.......2000-03-26
I first read this book when I was in 5th grade and fell in love with it the first time I read it. Since then, I have read this book several times and it is one of my favorite books because there is so much one can learn from the lives of the people in the book, especially from Christine, a girl who has cystic fibrosis. What makes me read it time after time and keeps my attention is the strength and courage of one family and especially Christine. It is so encouraging when you can read someone's story like the one in Give Me one Wish and know that she was able to keep such a positive attitude and not let her illness "get the best of her". The lessons that can be learned from this book will stay with you for the rest of your life and so will the impact of this book. The person that wrote the book was Christine's mom and the story she tells from the journal entries of Christine's to evoking the emotions that Christine had are amazing. This is both an incredibly inspiring book and an incredibly sad book. It makes me cry every time I read it. All I can say is, incredible.
