Black business activity has been sustained in America for almost four centuries. Public Companies and Their Equity Securities presents a comprehensive, critical examination of the laws and norms regulating existing companies, their equity securities, and other participants in this significant international market. The author highlights the difficulties in making Anglo-Saxon corporate and securities laws fit fundamentally different markets via four major themes: (1) To ensure investor protection, corporate law and securities regulations must be formatted as one integral law. (2) Rules of corporate governance prevailing in Anglo-Saxon jurisdictions must be adapted in Hong Kong's different corporate structures. (3) Problems of enforcement must receive particular attention given the difficulties inherent in a self regulatory regime and the absence of a contingency fee system. (4) The problems posed by internationalisation require specific solutions. This volume is a compendium of chapters written by editor John Hancock and other highly regarded experts. Their clear, comprehensive book appears to be targeted to fund managers and corporate investor relations officers, more than to average green-minded investors. Don't expect passionate jeremiads on the health of Mother Earth. Indeed, the authors point to a growing scientific consensus that nuclear power is the safest way to wean the world from fossil fuels, and they insist that investments must generate profits as well as good will. This sound, useful volume will help educate investors regarding the growing significance of the SRI movement. We recommend it strongly, in part thanks to its expansive appendices detailing ethical policies, standards, definitions and performance. Some years ago, a Sesame Street social philosopher named Kermit the Frog observed, "It's not easy being green." That may still be true, but - as this book points out - it is getting a lot more profitable.

This splendid book is exactly what is needed right now!

It's an antidote to the current corporate paradigm of greed and exploitation in which YOU, the manual worker, the office worker, the contractor, the shop assitant, whatever, are being openly exploited to line the pockets of the few? Wasn't it always so? Since the Industrial Revolution, yes. But not 'always', by any means! The way corporates over-work and under-pay their employees today, along with the way advertisers try and extract maximum cash from your pocket, and the way the banks and house developers keep property moving ever upwards, taking increasing amounts of your hard-earned on living costs, all come together to create the modern version of indentured slavery.

Hey, get a copy of this book...USED if necessary! It's jam-packed with motivation and business "smarts" for anyone trying to get your business going. I love the "mental shifts" Paul and Sarah talk about...how to change your thinking from payroll to profit-thinking. And the keys to motivating yourself are priceless.

My copy of Making It On Your Own is all marked up and the pages are dog-earred. So much in here! Do yourself a favor and get a copy, a used one if necessary. You'll be glad you did!

The turn of the 20th century represented one of the most chaotic periods in the nation's history, as immigrants, Native Americans, and African Americans struggled with their roles as Americans while white America feared their encroachments on national identity. This book examines Theodore Roosevelt’s public rhetoric—speeches, essays, and narrative histories—as he attempted to craft one people out of many. Leroy G. Dorsey observes that Roosevelt's solution to the problem appeared straightforward: everyone could become "Americans, pure and simple" if they embraced his notion of "Americanism." Roosevelt grounded his idea of Americanism in myth, particularly the frontier myth—a heroic combination of individual strength and character. When nonwhites and immigrants demonstrated these traits, they would become true Americans, earning an exalted status that they had heretofore been denied.

Dorsey’s analysis illuminates how Roosevelt's rhetoric achieved a number of delicate, if problematic, balancing acts. Roosevelt gave his audiences the opportunity to accept a national identity that allowed "some" room for immigrants and nonwhites, while reinforcing their status as others, thereby reassuring white Americans of their superior place in the nation. Roosevelt’s belief in an ordered and unified nation did not overwhelm his private racist attitudes, Dorsey argues, but certainly competed with them. Despite his private sentiments, he recognized that racist beliefs and rhetoric were divisive and bad for the nation’s progress. The resulting message he chose to propagate was thus one of a rhetorical, if not literal, melting pot.

By focusing on Roosevelt’s rhetorical constructions of national identity, as opposed to his personal exploits or his role as a policy maker, We Are All Americans offers new insights into Roosevelt’s use of public discourse to bind the nation together during

one of the most polarized periods in its history.

Through laughter and tears, readers stated they have found ways to reach beyond retribution for injustice, abuse, suffering and pain to reconciliation and forgiveness.

This is an insightful book into the psyche of abuse and denial. A tough read for the soft of heart. But both a page turner and a must read.

the author provided an excellent bit of history of living in an orphanage as an african american in a segregated situation, her decription of that life was just well written and the information was just a winner.. I would recommend this to all... i BECAME hooked on blue popsicleS....

A Real Page Turner, Up All Night Kind of Book.......2005-10-23

What a page turner. I could not put it down once I started reading. It is a heart warming testimony to the resilience of human beings. It is amazing that the author remained in tact after such a terrifying childhood. My heart went out to little Nancy, I cried for her and wished so many times I could have reached in and held her. What a remarkable story, what an amazing woman, what a "must read" book. I certainly hope she will write a sequel so that I can find out what happened to the rest of her life. NeAnni Ife is a true example of the not mythical strong black woman.

Having also grown up in this Home, I know the strife that NeAnni felt having to tell her story. But tell it she did!!

I was much younger when what happened to her took place. Making her story public helped change the way we were punished in the years to come. The public was now aware, and started paying close attention to what was happening to those poor kids up on the hill.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you NeAnni. Know how proud I am of you!!!

What courage it took for you to stand up against the abuse. What soul searching and anguish you must have gone through to be able bring this story life.

An Amazing Story.......2005-01-14

This book is amazing! It's hard to believe that people could be so cruel to children. If a parent today did to their children what was done to the children of the OS&SO Home, they would be in prison. It's good to know that Nancy/NeAnni is doing well. I hope that other "orphans" are too. I'm recommending this book to my friends, and I look forward to other books from this talented writer.
