Wow! Great Brownie Recipes.......2007-02-19
My sister brought this book home from the library and it looked wonderful, so I made up the Kahlua brownies right away. Can you say Fab-u-lous! Since we had to return the book to the library, I bought the book so as never to be more than an hour away from a brownie treat.
The next batch of brownies I made (cream cheese layered) were better than the first batch. This book is a solid home run. If you love brownies, you will love this book.

Many recipes call for a basic brownie to start with, and others are far-fetched variations on a theme, but there are enough excellent twists (and great instructions) to make the book a worthwhile addition to the library of any decadent brownieholic.
Where are all the pictures?.......2006-08-20
Great recipes, but I have a tendency to want to know what the finished product is going to look like, especially on the more complex recipes. Very little pictorial representation is the only drawback that I can find to this book.

I searched three different bookstores on my last day in the US, so desperate was I to have this book. Just when I was about to give up, I was able to procure the last copy that they had at Barnes & Noble.
I read this on the 15 hour flight back home, and I must say that I prefer Lisa Slater's
Brownie Points. While Brownies to Die For! has a more captivating title, and is hardbound, I'm a little wary of the photos, which I feel are very amateur for a published book, especially one by a food writer and recipe developer. Reading the past customers' reviews about wayward recipe cooking times only increases my trepidation of whether this book was worth my fervent search for it. Save yourself the grief and buy Brownie Points instead.

With patience and an understanding that not all ovens are the same, I waited with great anticipation as my first batch of brownies from this book emerged from the oven. A little moist, I simply continued to bake just to the right point...let them cool and devoured them with friends. Can't wait to try the rest of the recipes and get copies for gifts!

Great dessert book.......2002-09-18
I love 2 things about this book. 1) all recipes were tested using supermarket ingredients, and tools. 2) The desserts are impressive. You will not be sorry. I'm glad I have this in my collection.
The only thing that keeps me from using this book often is the recipes are time intensive. They literally take HOURS to prepare from start to finish. I prepare them over 2 days.
Note: be sure you have a heady duty mixer.

Others have noted that Desaulniers is a master of marketing, and it's true--but his recipes WORK and make absolutely stunning presentations. If you need a special occasion dessert--perhaps one to propose by? perhaps one to celebrate the birth of a child?--you can't go wrong choosing one of Desaulniers' desserts from "Desserts to Die For."
Desaulniers encourages "mise en place" (the French culinary term for "everything in its place," or setting out all ingredients before ever beginning the recipe), which I admire, and he instructs his readers--kindly, politely, but firmly--to read each recipe through from start to finish before beginning. This is good advice in any cooking situation, but it makes strong sense with Desaulniers' recipes, which tend to be extremely detailed. Some cooks might find this annoying, but there are others--myself among them--who understand that this concentration on every little tiny thing means that Desaulniers recognizes the difference between a pretty good dessert and a great one. And he wants you to prepare nothing but great ones!
Desaulniers' personal dessert philosophy may be best expressed by the W. Somerset Maugham quotation with which he heads the introduction: "Excess on occasion is exhilarating; it keeps moderation from becoming a habit." And are these recipes excessive in nearly every way! Desaulniers wisely avoids giving calorie counts, fat content, etc. for each recipe, and concentrates instead on seducing his readers into wanting to make each and every dessert so sumptuously photographed by Michael Grand. The names are rich and evocative as the dishes themselves--Tuxedo Truffle Torte, Chocolate Voodoo Cake, Mocha Almond Praline Snap, Chocolate Caramel Hazelnut Damnation, Trick or Treat Ice Cream, "24" Carrot Cake, Wild Orchid, Chocolate Exquisite Pain (yikes!), Chocolate Resurrection, and White Chocolate Lullaby are but a few of the many tempting offerings herein.
There are many non-chocolate desserts in this book, but it's clear that Desaulniers is most excited by chocolate anything--it sets his heart to soaring, his brain to feverish activity, and his hands to creating something wonderful for all of us to try.
Worth the sacrifice.......2001-11-28
I'm the first to admit that Desaulniers is a master of marketing. This becomes obvious if you visit his restaurant. And the series of cookbooks on the Death By theme are an example of taking the ball and running...and running... . But the truth is, these books are great, especially the first two, Death By Chocolate and Deserts to Die for.
These aren't simple recipes; they require patience, attention to detail, and most of all time. But I've never had commitment so rewarded. They almost always turn out just right. And when they're a little off, no one notices or cares. I've no professional training, and I haven't been cooking all of my life. But these recipes have been so popular that I've actually made cakes for a co-worker's Uncle's birthday party, a baby shower and two wedding showers - including my own (well, my wife's actually). Every family holiday I get requests. I would test the recipes and bring the results into work, and my team was always looking for more. And people rave and rave.
Over and over again, people tell me that I should do this professionally. But it isn't really me; it's these wonderful books. If you care enough about the end product and the oohs and ahs to invest lots of time and attention - these recipes pay off.
You may want Marcel's first book instead.............2001-11-23
I am no beginner baker and I have always loved Marcel's first book "DEATH BY CHOCOLATE". However, unlike the first book, this one is clearly not as well tested. Many recipes if followed by the book will not come out correctly. If you have the wherewithall to understand where he is erring (and I must say he is trying to help - it is frequently in how long he says to bake/process/stir/etc and he is trying to be exact), then you will fare better.
I have made his molten chocolate cakes which are great - however the golden halo will not work without a basic understanding of how to carmelize sugar into threads. The fudge squares (Mrs D's ?)never congealed. The cranberry crostata is good but, again, following his timing will not get what the picture shows you (ie - 15 sec of food processor gives walnut powder).
Marcel Desaulniers is a terrific cook and an eloquent, humorous guy, but it is clear that it is his FIRST book is far better. It is that book which you should buy rather than this one.
Having said that, I received DEATH BY CHOCOLATE CAKES as a recent gift and I have yet to see where that one falls in the spectrum. Read the above reviews as you may, but don't say I didnt warn you if you are a beginner!
Masterpiece on the Finality to a Meal!.......2001-02-06
The King of Ganache adds yet another awesome volume to his Death By Chocolate.
This one includes more great chocolate offerings, e.g. Chocolate Resurrection which includes an easily done golden chalice, or the heavyweight of ice cream dishes, "What A Chunk of Chocolate" Ice Cream Terrine.
To these, he adds additional selections including fruits and berries, one of my favorites and so beautiful a presentation: Cherry Bomb with cherries and berries, to cookies, sticky buns, cheesecakes.
For those who want that special dessert touch,offer your guests "Long Island Iced Tea Sorbet." This book continues the author's style of clear recipes, illustrations, marvelous full-page photos, and "The Chef's Touch" where he gives hints on all kinds of adjunct bits of wonderful gourmet info.

There are only 5 recipes that claim to be Junior's in the entire book. They are: Junior's sponge cake crust; Junior's shortbread crust; Junior's cinnamon crumb topping; Junior's signature strawberry sauce and Junior's cheese cake tart. If you don't want to know how to make these recipes find another book. They don't give up the real recipes that you would assume you would get. I am terribly disappointed and do not recommend this book to anyone. You will not learn how to make Junior's cheesecake here.

I pre-ordered this book and was very excited to receive it in the mail today. I quickly flipped to the recipes for my two favorite cheesecakes (the Devil's Food and Lemon Coconut) which I've had many, many times, not only at Juniors in Brooklyn and Grand Central, but also from their website. THESE RECIPES ARE NOT THOSE OF THE REAL CHEESECAKES!!! For example, the real lemon coconut is frosted with buttercream. So why does the book frost this cake with whipped cream?! Just one of many inconsistencies. Shame on you Junior's for touting this book as yours, but keeping the recipes to yourself! Poor form!

This is the very best book I have read on Trading. I have made a lot of money using Ross's trading philosophy. In summary his philosophy is cutting your losses short and letting your winners ride, but equally importantly he shows you how to implement this trading method. Do yourself a favor and get this book.

1) This one of the best books I have read.
2) It is not based on 'buying into value' but 'buying a thrusting burst' (market strength).
3) In short - the book will teach you some of the best ways to handle the trends of a market - and - the flip side of the coin: to stay clear of non-trending areas.

Worst book i've ever read on trading. Over 300 pages to explain a simple break out "system". Go to the nearest bar, and ask the bartender about the market, that would be of greater help...

Real life trading plan for winning in the futures markets!.......1999-04-10
This is by far the best book I've read about futures trading. And I have many books by some of the best known, so-called "experts". The author takes you step by step through a trading methodology called the "Ross Hook". There is no "fluff". Only real life, usable information. I really learned a lot from reading the sections on trade management. What an eye opener!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is tired of all the hype and misleading advertising that is done in this industry, and wants a real trading system to work with. It is very refreshing to read a book on futures trading that actually shows you, in precise detail, how to trade. Forget about vague and general "rules". You will learn techniques that you can take to the bank!
This is a down and dirty real life way to win in the futures market! Excellent job Mr. Ross!

The fictional cases breathe renewed vigor into the study of ethics by employing a new learning device: the "ethical serial." Each fictional case can be understood individually, but the cases are also unified by use of a single set of college-aged characters whose personalities are developed throughout the book. These characters mimic real people far more closely than those in other texts and act in situations that are directly familiar to students. The book is composed of four units. The first two focus on ethical reasoning, outlining within the context of science and engineering the notions of character formation and intention central to virtue theory. It has been suggested that rapid movement towards 'who knows where' is endemic to all technological development; that its researchers pursue it for curiosity and enjoyment, without knowing the consequences, believing that their efforts will be beneficial. Further, that the enthusiasm for development comes with no malicious intent but rather from simple ignorance. Contrary to that commonly held perception about the collective pursuit of technological development, there are individual research scientists and engineers who are quite willing to reflect on the meaning of their work in nanotechnology. Nanotalk is a book of conversations and explorations with thirty five such nano-research scientists and engineers who share their ideas, experiences, perceptions, and beliefs about their work, humanity, nature, change, and the future of the world with nanotechnology. Precisely because of the unknowable nature of nanotechnology research and development, conscientious foresight and ethical reflection are warranted every step of the way. Not only do nanotechnology research and development represent enormous financial commitments, but they also require a profound leap of faith regarding its possible outcomes.
