An excellent technical resource.......2001-04-26

The nonprofit sector is a huge part of the American economy. Nonprofits range from multinationals to your local little league. While, technically, the same body of tax laws applies to all of them, the level of sophistication varies as dramatically as the size of the nonprofit. And while the big nonprofits can afford to buy expertise, smaller nonprofits have to manage more of the tasks themselves. This book can help.

Hopkins' book is an excellent reference for attorneys and accounts and nonprofit executives with some knowledge of nonprofit tax laws work. It's not likely to be useful to and it's not written for the average volunteer. This is a fairly technical resource, and while nonprofit tax law gets a lot more complicated than Hopkins, this is a very good middle-level resource.

If I have any criticism of Hopkins it's this: in recent editions he has removed important subjects from this reference and spun them off into separate books at equally high prices. Most of the treatment of charitable donations, for example, is now in a different book. Private foundations are now in a different book. Excess benefits transactions are in a different book. You can spend a ton of money on Professor Hopkins. It costs him one star in my rating.

Even so, as a basic entry point, this book is indispensable. I've attended seminars by Prof. Hopkins and read most his books, and he is very knowledgeable and does a good job at the difficult task of translating IRS-speak into comprehensible language. This book should be a part of every nonprofit lawyer and accountant's library.

Very comprehensive "hornbook.".......1999-08-13

In mid-1999 I read this treatise in conjunction with the author's one day course on the Law of Tax Exempt Organizations. The book is essentially a "hornbook:" a summary of law geared towards lawyers and accountants, rather than the casual reader. It would be especially helpful for lawyers and accountants in outside firms who counsel a variety of different tax exempt organizations and are confronted with questions of how to structure an organization or several related organizations. The material is valuable but no easy slogging, so if you can take the course (which in mid-1999 was approx. $230 and included the book), it would be worth the extra $70 or so.

As with his prior editions, Hopkins has managed to address, within the covers of a single volume well, actually, he added another book to more fully cover private foundations!

As individuals, the only thing that we own is our beliefs. If you believe something to be true, you consider it to be your knowledge. If, however, you don't believe something to be true, you have very little knowledge of it. So knowledge is power, but only if you believe it to be true. If one side of the coin says, "Man has no guarantees in life," then it's safe to assume that the opposite side of the coin guarantees man one thing, "No individual can live forever." Yet, people flip the coin every day. Even though I cannot offer you any guarantees, we already have our guarantee.

Let me say that if you believe the philosophies in this book, then my philosophies will become your knowledge. If, however, you don't believe the philosophies in this book, you'll have very little knowledge of small business management.

Mr. Olivo is right, small business management is nothing more than philosopies that work. This book, in the right hands, could help an individual start his or her own business. Mr. Olivo talks about different philosophies that Almost anybody can grasp and use for his or her own business. Great concept on developing your own personal philosophies on business. Also teach how to get customers interested in your product or service. People don't know what they want until you tell them what they need. Very easy to follow along too...

As Mr. Oilvo points out, business management is nothing more than philosophies that work. Unlike other business management books, Olivofonics looks at why and how any certain business action is or is not ethical. How to make people believe that they want to buy from you. It also gives philosophies in how to make your employees want to preform their very best for your business. If Plato would have wrote a Small Business Management book; it would have been simular to Olivofonics. I learned something new and I've been an accountant for 30-years.

Brilliantly different..........2001-04-02

The author Mr. Olivo took basic business principals and added some good old fashioned philosophy. Business mamagement is nothing more than philosophy. Most people know and understand why it's important to act or do certain customs. Olivofonics tells you why the small business manager would do them. It takes a long hard look at the philosophies of business and asks questions like what it is to be ethical, logical, and professional. It gives the reader and small busienss manager a wide area to which he or she can expand on. The book makes you think, which more individuals need to start doing anyhow. Nice consept to it. I highly recommend it....

Within a few years of their liberation from Spanish rule in the 1820s, several of the new Spanish American republics floated loans in London's financial market. All the debtor nations, from Mexico to Chile, had defaulted within five years, a situation which resulted in their exclusion from European capital markets for much of the 19th century. Most studies of such debt approach the subject from the debtor's viewpoint, some arguing that the British government was an economic imperialist. Concentrating on Mexico, this book provides an important corrective, focusing on the creditors, the individual investors who risked their money to buy bonds. These investors ranged from country clergy to politicians of the rank of Benjamin Disraeli. Thousands of investors lost their money due to Mexico's persistent defaults and failure to pay the promised dividends. They were represented by the Committee of Mexican Bondholders, a London based organization established in 1830 to negotiate a settlement of the debt with the Mexican government. Almost sixty years of futile discussions followed, with the debt rescheduled on several occasions until the final settlement in the 1880s. Costeloe analyzes the negotiations, the bond issues, the identity of the bondholders, the activities of the Committee, and the attitude of the British government. By concentrating on the creditor, he brings a new perspective to the whole issue of Third World or foreign debt in the 19th century.

Delicious Bread and Inspiring Words.......2004-06-09

This book was written by a beautiful woman who has made it her goal in life to make others happy. Kathy writes in a manner that is simple and humble. Her style allows the reader to not only learn to make delicious bread, but understand the peace that Kathy feels when she makes and shares bread. I am a long-time bread maker and love these recipes. They have been perfected to the point where a novice can easily learn and an experienced bread maker can start to develop new recipes. This is not just a book for bread makers or just a book for those with cancer. Kathy's experience with cancer and her love of making handmade bread is an inspiration to anyone.

If this is ANYTHING like the last edition, this book was about as helpful as the yellow pages and a few brief articles on wedding planning. The information was spotty and incomplete for many locations and there weren't that many locations. I believe that sites had to pay to get in the book. If not, the author is just not very thorough. There are many, many great sites not listed.

I've always thought of Goldie as the cute, ditzy go-go- dancer of "Laugh-in" days and wondered about her background, her romances, her children and especially why she never married Kurt Russell. This book answered my questions...There is certainly more "meat" to her than on her bones...

In August of 1945 the Marchenia family took up residence in a home on Seven Mile Road on the East Side of Detroit. It was a home with a potbellied stove and a generous front porch, lilac bushes and shade trees. It was a time when children spent their days flying kites, and watching clouds, and their evenings chasing fireflies and gazing at the stars. It was a golden period of childhood.

On Seven Mile Road is a story about growing up in the forties and fifties. It is a story about growing up in Detroit. And yet it is much more than either of these. It is a story about growing up at a time in America when life was simpler, gentler, when extended families lived close together, when people had less material wealth, but greater spiritual wealth.

When my sisters and I are together a conversation often starts "remember when...". Reading On Seven Mile is like eaves-dropping on another family as they recall vignettes of their lives in the 40s and 50s. Although I was from another place, memories of growning up at that time is something with which I connect stongly.

It is a delightful read. I so enjoyed this book, we are going read it for our book club selection this summer. It brought back such memories of my own childhood that I know it will evoke a great discussion for our club. It is a quick read but challenges us to remember our formative years. The author's family and friends come alive for us in the vignette style chapters and charming sketches of the Seven Mile Road neighborhood. Enjoy the smells of your grandma's kitchen, the games you played with your neighborhood friends or just sit at the table until you finish your peas. It will bring a warm heartfelt smile. It is a great read for all ages. I am looking forward to the sequel.

This book brought back the sights, sounds and smells of growing up in the 40's and 50's in the most delicious way. It recalled the long forgotten words and phrases, feelings, thoughts and past times of childhood. You once again feel the frustration of limping home with a broken roller skate, the dreamy pleasure of naming the shapes of clouds on a summer day, the piercing smell of those Toni home permanents, and the cozy sound of the rain on the front porch. The writing is elegantly simple. The author shares her loving extended family with you in such a way that you feel you are having coffee at the kitchen table with them. A must read. You'll love it.

A Journey Back To Childhood.......2004-02-12

This book took me right back to my childhood. All the memories of growing up in the 40's and 50's came flooding back. It was sweet, simple and fast reading but I kept pausing and thinking of my own memories of those carefree days of childhood.I would recomend it to anyone who grew up in those times and to anyone age nine on up,to give them a look at what life was like back then.
