A Straight Forward Text Book .......2007-05-27
It's a textbook. That being said, it is filled with extra material, like case examples, a CD-ROM, etc. I didn't look at any of that because my business law class went at such a slow pace we only looked at about 10 of the chapters. If you are buying this for a class, you should come away with a lot of good information from this book without feeling it is too much of a boring chore to read through.

Excellent text for the Instructor; for the Student.......2004-11-01
This is an excellent text at various levels of interest, desire, talent and time. The text is arranged that given the time, the Instructor can dig deeper and deeper into thorny topics. Additionally, curious students can rely on numerous web sources for enhanced views and greater depth.
Further, there are additional sources for the Instructor available through test banks and outlines. This is my favorite text to teach from. It is neither dry with enough cases to stir the imagination of the younger students nor MTV'd and contains sufficient current cases to give older students and retired students pause to consider. 5 stars. Not Only For Students.......2004-02-08
I am using this textbook in several of my classes, and let me just say- it has everything I could have hoped for. The chapters are laid out well, many cases are cited, and the student is given actual cases to figure out, with the citations given at the end so he can find the actual outcome. I've found this to be among the best textbooks. It is so good, in fact that I've reccomended it to several of my friends who are going into business for themselves. This covers nearly everything they'll need to know regarding contracts, secured transactions, warranties, etc.

This is an excellent text. It incorporates the law, as well as
legal research methodologies. For instance, a standard chapter
contains an outline, common law sources,constitutional,
statutory and administrative laws/rule-making. The work cites
computerized legal research in WESTLAW and LEXIS. Relevant
international legal citations are listed. The applicable
United States Code is cited by Title and specific paragraph.
In some cases, individual state legal codes are cited. There
are exhaustic sets of historical and statutory notes, cross
references and federal practice notes. Each chapter has a
comprehensive case study with a brief synopsis, cited case
and final disposition. There are teaching suggestions at the
end of the instructor's manual together with discussion
questions, research assignments and an explanation of footnotes.
In addition, there is an exhaustive section on essay question
answers.

Sugartime combines the romance and poetry of this outdoor activity with incerted sections that answer basic questions for the novice.
The author tells the story of how she (and her husband?) have been drawing and boiling down maple syrup from their 22 trees in the back yard over the past 20+? years.
This book answered most of my basic questions about sugaring, but some more questions were raised as I finished the book.
Overall it has been very helpful in getting started.

Sugartime: The Hidden Pleasures of Making Maple Syrup with a primer for the Novice Sugarer by Susan Carol Hauser is written in such a way that as the author describes her personal account with sugaring, it is easy for the reader to absorb practical knowledge. I was able to acquire some insight into the process of sugaring, even though I have never done it before. This book is inspirational for those who feel a nostalgia for the country, practical for those who would like to learn more about amateur sugaring. This is not a comprehensive or technical work, but, rather is an interesting introduction to maple sugaring. The book includes some recipes and nostalgic pictures.

I have been trading professionally for over 10 years. I have done very well in the markets after a long learning curve. The ideas in this book have a slight chance to work, but you'd be better off fliping a coin than using his entry methods. I was on the floor and everyone knows about these ideas. Everything in here needs a tight stop.

If taxation is the mobilization of economic resources for political ends, it is evident that any study of taxation must probe well beyond the administrative technicalities of its subject. Social, economic, political and administrative history are all part of the investigation.The early Tudor period is especially significant in the history of taxation. This new study examines the taxes granted by parliament to the crown between 1485 and 1547. Under Henry VIII, taxation based on the direct assessment of each individual was revived, having been abandoned as unworkable in the fourteenth century. In the long run, the Tudor experiment failed: direct assessment was abandoned again after decades of complaint about evasion and under-assessment in the mid-seventeenth century, and was not restored until the end of the eighteenth century. But examination of the experiment, and of the timing and causes of its failure, throws light on the changing political limits of the Tudor state.Schofield 's research marks an important advance in our understanding not only of the fiscal resources available to the English crown but also of the broader political culture of early Tudor England.

"Dream" is a snooze.......2007-02-19
My book club selected this book because Tsukiyama is one of our favorite authors. Compared to her other novels like Samurai's Garden, Language of Threads and Women of the Silk, Tsukiyama's Night of Many Dreams does not have a compelling story line - mildly interesting, but not a page-turner. It's defintiley not one of her best efforts. Ironically, the title seems to have nothing to do with the tale, except that reading the book might make you snooze.
I enjoyed the book, but not the sequence of events .......2006-12-28
I found this book in a hospital waiting room recently while waiting for a family member receiving a treatment. After about three pages, I was hooked and conned a nurse into letting me borrow it from the hospital.
Overall, the book was well written, interesting, and informative. If it is historically accurate, I learned some things.
One thing that I didn't like about this book was that it jumped around so much. For instance, in one scene, Emma and Jack have their first date and in the next, they are married with a two-year-old child.
I didn't like that the male characters weren't really developed. Hing is always off in another country for work. Joseph's a letch. Chin is elusive. You learn nothing of Wilson's life outside of the Rec Center. Jack is developed pretty well, but then is axed at the end. I knew it was coming, but found it completely unnecessary to kill off Jack's character. That was just wrong.
I found it odd that Joan and Emma have English names when no one else does (in Hong Kong) except for Joseph.
I like Emma's and Joan's characters. Joan is depicted as a strong, stubborn person who can succeed at anything she desires. However, I didn't like it and found it strange that such a strong character was reduced to premarital sex with her director.
That was a really unusual scene. Here's a young woman going into her house after work and her boyfriend drives up saying he needs to speak with her. So, they drive off to his apartment, which seemed like an odd place just to go to "talk." Along the way she thinks that whatever happens, she has no control over. Huh? This is a strong woman, who once fought off an armed soldier and she thinks she has no control over a chat with her boyfriend? That didn't make any sense.
At his apartment, he's so embarrassed about his messy bedroom, that he closes the door. Then, he just picks her up out of the blue mid-discussion, carts her off into the embarrassingly messy bedroom, undresses her, and does the deed without her saying or doing anything. Just bizarre.
Overall, I really liked the book, but would have liked some characters and relationships developed better and to not end when it did.
Tsukeyama delivers through her voice.......2006-10-31
I approached this novel after relishing Tsukeyama's "Women of the Silk" and "The Samurai Garden". After two such masterpieces, I was half-expecting a waning ability to keep fresh story ideas and a slip into banal immigrant themes. As with her other works, I found strikingly-moving interactions between characters and a fluidity which draws one into the scenic location changes of the individuals in the story.
One of Tsukeyama's talents lies in her subtle ability to introduce character traits through tight dialogue and her resistance to pepper the discourses with Asian-sounding metaphors and references. By using the latter sparsely, she paints a more realistic San Francisco, Macao, and Hong Kong, three cities seeking modernity against the pull of traditionalism and sentimentality. I enjoy her choice of time and places, depicting a family's progression over a period which spans several decades beginning with WWII-the most volatile and growth-inspired decades of the Pacific Rim.
Through each of her tales, I imagine Tsukeyama talking to procurement agents with negotiations on upcoming screen adaptations. If not done yet, perhaps she might convince an Asian production company to supervise such films, for they call for more subtle and engaging cinematography than is generally found in blockbuster films.
I can imagine how the story might read if translated into Chinese for an Asian readership. With her formulas and style, Tsukeyama shall continue to breathe beauty into her character-driven stories. Although I read it alone over a Chinese dinner at a restaurant on San Bruno Avenue, it beckons to be shared with another as a corn-cob-piped storyteller might. Try reading this book aloud to a friend, even in English--you will understand what I mean.
I highly recommend this book.
A serene tour de force.......2006-10-20
I was recommended to this book by a friend, and before that, I had never even heard of the author. The plot wasn't intricate nor breathtaking, nor is it the psychological workings of the characters violently stirring. This story of Emma and the years of her childhood to adulthood set with the scenes of boisterous Hong Kong, friendly Macao, and abroad in San Francisco could only be depicted with a style of such grace and candor. Whenever I feel like a rest from the rush of this world, I would pick up another book by Tsukiyama and allow the lightness of her beautiful writing life me up.

I picked up this book because the story looked interesting; little did I know that this book would be so horrible I would put it down in the middle. Good grief! Unfortunately, Gail Tsukiyama has a nasty habit of writing choppy books. She'll touch on one idea for about a page, never really going in-depth, then move on. In addition, the characters all seemed one-dimensional and never convinced me to care about them. As a result, Gail Tsukiyama's work came off as very amateur-ish and unworthy of my time. For good fiction about Asian women, please read some of Amy Tan's older works or Arthur Golden's Memoirs of a Geisha.

I requested my school librarian to purchase a book in memory of my sons grandmom. How delighted I was to read her choice and how appropriate too. While an enchanting story of how a father and son deal with a night without mom the message is also there of life, stars too numerous to count, of a world without end.
Held the children's interest throughout.......1998-04-23
When I read this book myself, I frankly thought it was a little boring, but I was happy to see the children paid attention from beginning to end. I read it to a group of seven 6 to 8-year-old boys. They appeared to be most interested in counting the stars on each page (and then arguing about the tally!) but when we talked about it afterwards, I found they really had been listening to the words. The paintings are beautiful.

Lothane has brilliantly researched the most written-about of all psychiatric patients. The author has webbed together a fascinating account from multiple perspectives, including historical, legal, psychoanalytic, political, and medical. It is the first source to consult about Schreber. Lothane has painstakingly researched his subject, has made important historical discoveries about Schreber and his times, and has given us a valuable commentary on issues such as diagnosis, Freud's formulation of paranoia based on the Memoirs, and the influence of Schreber's famous father. It is indispensable reading for anyone interested in this fascinating man and his work.
