      Book Description

Sexual harassment is one of the most problematic issues in the American workplace and one that has captured much media attention following a number of high-profile lawsuits and congressional hearings. This increased awareness, along with several landmark developments such as the availability of damages under the Civil Rights Act of 1991, has led to an astronomical rise in sexual harassment lawsuits. Yet, sexual harassment law is often still misunderstood, to the point that some federal appeals courts have characterized it as "chaotic," and have asked for Supreme Court direction. This book fills the need for a comprehensive text that is also concise and simple, in contrast to the voluminous texts that cater primarily to litigating attorneys and tend to be unsuitable for other constituents, such as law and business professors and students, human resource managers, and risk management consultants. Achampong's is the only work that devotes several chapters to landmark developments such as third-party and same-sex sexual harassment and the only one that goes beyond merely discussing workplace harassment prevention to discussing risk management of liability for sexual harassment. It also discusses esoteric rules that apply to federal sector sexual harassment complainants. The appendices provide guidelines on discrimination; excerpts from the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1991; a discussion of landmark Supreme Court cases; excerpts from the EEOC Compliance Manual; and EEOC policy guidelines on current issues of sexual harassment.

        5 out of 5 stars Gourmet--but easy!.......2002-10-10

This cookbook is easy to read and follow, but the nice thing is that the recipes all come out like they were difficult to prepare when actually they were not. Every recipe has a color photo and none take over 30 minutes to prepare. I have never had a cookbook where I liked so many of the recipes. This is a winner. I have ordered one for both of my daughters.

5 out of 5 stars Some new twists on pasta.......2001-07-16

Cookbooks are my passion. Every now and then a particular book comes along that makes me want to try every recipe, and this was certainly the case with this book. The recipes include ingredients that are either already in your pantry or refrigerator. Best of all, should you lack an item, you don't have to visit a specialty store to find it. Every recipe I've served to my friends, has yielded the words all cooks long to hear, "...I love this, can I have the recipe?" Versatility, ease of preparation, and tasty results... what more could a cook want!

I no longer want to go out to dinner! Each time I've made one of these recipes, the end result is a meal I'd find at a very good quality restaurant. Every one of the recipes I've tried has been easy to make and delicious. Most of the ingredients were already in my own pantry and freezer. This is a keeper!

I found this book easy-to-read and understand. Nearly every recipe is illustrated by a clear, color photo. The ingredients are common and available in most markets, and the instructions to create a tasty, visually-appealing dish are easily explained and detailed clearly. This is a great book for the beginning or timid cook, and would make a perfect gift for a wedding-shower or for someone who is just now learning to cook.

            Book Description

Several senior natural resource analysts study the role played by innovation, particularly technological innovation, in the pursuit of heightened productivity. Increasing the output of a given input improves a firm's bottom line, makes it more competitive internationally, and reduces the potential for resource depletion and shortages. Thus, high productivity is a necessary ingredient of economic prosperity. This book illustrates the importance of technological innovation in achieving an acceptable level of output and efficiency.

In this important new offering, a team of resource scholars describes and chronicles the development of recent innovations in selected natural resource industries. The authors also reveal the causes, sources, and net effect of such innovation on productivity. In all of these sectors productivity has increased considerably since the early 1980s, although the level of improvement varies across industries. To what degree did technological innovation contribute to that increase?

Individual detailed case studies detail important innovations in America's coal, petroleum, copper, and forest industries. The primary focus is on extraction and production technologies, although the existence and importance of innovation in other areas such as management technique also enter the picture. For example, the combination of new technology with restructuring seems to have breathed new life into a floundering U.S. copper industry. The authors describe the origin and diffusion of important innovation, and the concluding chapter quantifies the net effect of such innovation on productivity.

4 out of 5 stars How unethical acts occur in organizations........1998-09-03

The twenty-eight contributors to the volume explore the effects of social influence and group persuasion, organizational authority and communication, fragmented responsibility, and the process of rationalization on individual and organizational behavior. Unethical acts, several authors propose, may be unintentionally "assembled" within organizations.

Treatises presented in this volume fall into four broad themes from psychology and behavioral economics: 1) power, influence, and authority; 2) prejudice, discrimination, bigotry and stereotyping; 3) ethical consequences of failing to accomplish ideal models of decision-making; and 4) the management of risk and risky situations by individuals and organizations.

The book is organized into two general sections, one dealing with organizational and social psychological issues and the other dealing with risk, reasoning, and decision-making. Within these sections, the chapters vary in the extent to which the phenomena they highlight are individual or organizational. For example, John Darley outlines ways in which organizational processes may induce people to violate their personal ethical values and George Loewenstein examines the ways in which cognitive biases also may permit people to behave unethically. The organization can be the source of trouble, or mischief can be caused by rather simple individual cognitive processes. Behavior in business, as anywhere, is the product of the interaction between the external factors of organizational environment and individual cognitive processes.

                  Book Description

Six Months at the White House was written by Francis Bicknell Carpenter after the unexpected popularity of a series of articles published in the New York Independence relating to Abraham Lincoln following his assassination. Carpenter, a Civil War portrait painter, was originally hired to capture President Lincoln in the picture. "First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation before the Cabinet." During the six months occupied in painting this picture, Carpenter enjoyed constant interaction with the President, as well as the various members of his Cabinet. Lincoln was enthusiastic in helping Carpenter, even letting him use the state dining room as his studio.

The incidents given were not in any sense isolated exception to the daily routine of Mr. Lincoln's life. The aim of the author was to portray the man as he was revealed to him, without any attempt at idealization. Carpenter has woven into the book personal reminiscences from various individuals, published and unpublished, which bear intrinsic evidence of the genuineness of the great man, Abraham Lincoln.

Written in a spirit of enthusiasm and affection, Six Months at the White House is a simple, matter-of-fact record of daily experience and observation, fragmentary but true, in all essential particulars of life in the White House as observed by Carpenter from February to August, 1864.

With a touch of dark humor, Mark Judge takes the reader on a 12-step journey through his experience as a teenage alcoholic and the revelations that led to his recovery. This coming-of-age memoir is presented from the perspective of an "ordinary" kid who grew up in a small town outside Washington, D.C., attended Catholic school, and experimented with alcohol in a fairly typical way. What is atypical is where the experimentation led. While his drunken acts first appear as little more than adolescent antics and harmless pranks, it slowly becomes apparent that there is a serious problem lurking behind the laughs and half-racks. After a series of events leads him into depression, humiliation, and confusion, Judge discovers both Alcoholics Anonymous and Milan Recovery, launching the narrative into a history of the programs and their respective pros and cons, the physiological roots of alcoholism, and the various misnomers related to the disease. In relating his experiences, Judge relies on his skills as a journalist to track the causes of addiction and the effectiveness of traditional recovery techniques while maintaining a deeply personal, though often cynical, tone.

                  Book Description

Cynicism and black humor underscore this hard-edged memoir of a young journalist's downward spiral into alcoholism. Mark Judge describes his progression through the thrill of early recovery to disenchantment with traditional recovery models, and his search for the information and sense of meaning he needed to come to terms with his addiction and his life

5 out of 5 stars A must read for parents and children.......1999-11-08

This book is wonderful. Mark tells of his own battle with alcoholism and his determination to become sober. He gives a good insight on the root of alcoholism. His recovery alone is inspiration for anyone to believe that they too can be sober.A must read for anyone who is trying to over come an addiction.

5 out of 5 stars I had four children in private school. So very true to life........1998-08-17

I wish all parents of high school age children would read it. It is so very true to life. I still have broken diningroom chairs as testimony to my children's highschool days.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining tale of one man's ordeals with alcoholism........1998-01-14

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Judge's book. Not only does he provide educational information on the root of alcoholism, he tells a very entertaining story of his youth. Many times I laughed out loud. My only complaint (which isn't one concerning the story) is that the book was printed on paper that utilized only half the page. A lot of wasted space.

This book will give a general overview on the different labors inside the corporate communications job.
It contains some really interesting interviews made to certain experts in the field but don't expect to get the secret to success.
It would have been a really good book if less space for the interviews would have been used and more information on the different aspects of corporate communications.
At the begining of chapter 1 there is a phrase that says "Normally the press is neither friendly nor hostile. They are just after the stiry"; Any public relations expert knows that some stories will always recive hostile treatment from the press.
Maybe in the future I will use this book to do some research but at the present time I will keep it in my book shelf.

You kind of get the feeling that if Jim Knipfel sat next to you on the bus, you'd get up and move. But it'd be your loss. Sure, he's surly, whacked out, and often socially unacceptable, but he can't be beat for smart, bitterly funny writing on subjects as varied as scuba diving and suicide attempts. The author of Slackjaw and a longtime columnist for the New York Press, Knipfel battles idiocy (his own and others') and boredom as a way of life. In Quitting the Nairobi Trio, he ends up in a psych ward after a botched attempt at ending his life with pills and scotch. Unhelpful attendants and randomly communicative wardmates fill his days, along with preposterously short weekly doctor sessions and rare family visits. Knipfel's memory for conversational bits is unerring; a simple question on his part is as likely to descend into violence as it is to end politely, and the result is a book that's hard to put down. Page after page grinds on in the black humor found only on a locked-door psych ward, and when the final illumination arrives--thanks to an Ernie Kovacs segment on a public television fundraiser--he can't even share it with his doctor. No classic happy ending from this author. Knipfel's viewpoint is definitely one-of-a-kind--and even fervent fans will agree that's probably a good thing. --Jill Lightner

                                  Book Description

The critically acclaimed author of Slackjaw is forced to spend six months in a locked-door psych ward, only to find that life can be better on the inside.

Thomas Pynchon calls Jim Knipfel's writing "extraordinary," while Michiko Kakutani in The New York Times says that he is "blessed with a natural, one might even say reflexive, knack for telling stories" that display "remarkable lan and some wicked black humor." Now, Knipfel uses those abilities to chronicle six months he spent in a Minneapolis psychiatric ward, where he was left to become his own therapeutic counsel.

As his new memoir begins, Knipfel has just failed at another suicide attempt. This time he is forced to stay in a psych ward until a doctor, whose once-a-week sessions last for ten minutes, deems him mentally fit to leave. Effectively abandoned, Knipfel begins his own self-analysis and embarks upon a series of haphazard skirmishes to regain his sanity, make new friends, and devise ways to pass the time. Finally, revelation and insight from a fellow patient and the late television comic Ernie Kovacs supply an answer only a paranoid could appreciate.

While Quitting the Nairobi Trio is similar to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, the difference in this remarkable book is that Jim Knipfel enjoyed life in the "bin."

"Jim Knipfel's artistic vision is as stunning as a sunset over the Brooklyn Bridge." --Entertainment Weekly

This book deals specifically with Knipfel's attempted suicide and the resulting time he spent in the booby hatch. While still a very good book, it's not up to the standards of that first, solid writing effort he created in SLACKJAW. While on some levels NAIROBI is a more mature book, it lacks the emotional power of the initial memoir by him. Still and all, it's worth the time to pursue, and as it's only available remaindered these days, you have no excuse at all for not picking up a copy and giving it a whirl.

5 out of 5 stars Journey to the Center of the Mind.......2005-11-07

I mean that title ironically of course. This is not a confessional book. Nor is it one of those incredibly dated "there is no thing as mental illness" tripe like Ken Keesey or R.D. Laing. Knipfel is not so much a participant as an observer. I can tell you, from experience, this is exactly what mental hospitals are like. The everyday boredom from the drug lines to the bland meals served with plastic utensils to the patients zoning out in front of the tv, everything is captured perfectly. And not to give too much away but it made me want to check out some Ernie Kovacs skits. The experience in this book is at once mundane and awe inspiring.

4 out of 5 stars They're coming to take me away, ha ha, hee hee.......2003-03-06

A mad book by a level head. Jim Knipfel gives you a ground zero tour of a locked down psych ward where he spent 6 months (in his early 20's) after trying to off himself with pills and cheap scotch (not that a $20 bottle would've necessarily done the job). He would be the first to admit that he is inept at suicide, this being one (the slam dunk) in a long line of self-inflicted attempts on his life. Writing from the perspective of an older person, one who may not have exorcised all his demons but at least has figured out what to feed them so that he can focus on his writing, Knipfel has drawn an evocative sketch of a milieu most people only see dramatized in films.

There is a cast of "Cuckoo's Nest" characters, each with their own quirks, but Knipfel shoots for empathy, or at least understanding, rather than condescension in his writing. It's the doctors and one particular orderly that make him leery; this orderly makes it a point to give him a guided tour of the electroshock therapy room and the straitjacket closet because he thinks of Knipfel as someone on the "outside". In fact, when he is eventually moved upstairs to the "open" ward (a case of false advertising, it turns out), he begins to miss his former community: the man on the stationary bike who pauses only to yell a bunch of four letter non sequitors and the woman whose makeup is applied in such a way that every day is Halloween for her. It is these descriptions, along with Knipfel's own psychedelic hallucinations that keep you engrossed. Despite having studied philosophy in grad school, thankfully he spins his tales with a layman's vocabulary.

In two books, this one and the earlier "Slackjaw", another painful/funny memoir, Knipfel, if he doesn't quite make the case for suffering as a crucible on the path towards a more tranquil frame of mind, at least allows you to laugh about it in a way that doesn't make you feel bad about doing so. The story has one foot in Purgatory and the other in Hell, and over there, in the toll booth taking your quarters is Beckett. And the author is wearing a Residents T-shirt in the jacket photo, so what are you waiting for?

In the tradition of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."

This is a great memoir for those leary of "therapy" and various psychiatric treatments, hospitals, and institutions. Knifel, from my home state, was institutionalized after a rather colorful suicide attempt. He summarized the whole experience in the preface, by asking, "Did it to me any good?" "
                                  No, he answered, again, colorfully.

Was he sane? I'm not sure that that means. (Though he was reading and rereading a book by Jacques Lacan, that post modernist loon who he admitted is incomprehensible....I don't know if anyone "sane" would put himself through that ordeal!)

I love Knipfel's talent at describing all he sees...the strange patients, the wonders as to whether they're any less sane than the staff. Sure, they were a bit strange, idiosyncratic, as were the self-commited characters in "Cuckoo's Nest." But any need for an institution? Something to think about...

By the way, the "Nairobi Trio" came from an old TV skit of Ernie Kovacs, and it became a metaphor for sanity or lack thereof. Wonderful.

The only thing I didn't like was the last few pages. It was the narrative of a dream. Perhaps it meant something. He's such a talented writer that it doubtless did. But I find the whole dream analysis thing to be so ridiculous that I don't take it seriously at all and it turns me off. But until then I recommend this book particularly for those who are suspicious of present day psychiatric "treatment" or even interested in a little entertainment through some great writing.

-Anthony Newley (1931-1999), Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)

Here's exhibit A in the case for not judging a book by its cover, or, for that matter, its title. I first saw
the book in a discount bin, spine out, and wondered how come I'd never heard of the Nairobi Trio.
Intrigued enough to at least check it out, I was greeted by one of the most frightening images I've ever
seen on a book jacket : a derby wearing, cigar smoking, guy in a gorilla mask, the whole thing tinted
blue. Check out the author info on the back flap and there's a picture of a long-haired guy in a top hat
who looks like a cross between Stevie Ray Vaughn and the actor David Warner. The book is
                                  eminently putdownable.

But then I read a couple decent reviews and realized that the author is a columnist for the consistently
diverting NY Press, so I figured it was worth a shot. Well, from the opening pages, where he analyzes
Gene Wilder singing Pure Imagination as an endorsement of a schizophrenic world view, Jim Knipfel's
memoir of a six month stay in a Minneapolis psych ward is at least wryly amusing, and often laugh out
                                  loud funny.

Particularly funny, though it obviously should not be, is his account of how he ended up there,
following a series of attempts to kill himself. In order to save his family the pain of dealing with his
action, Knipfel, who at the time was a graduate student and teaching assistant in philosophy at the
University of Minnesota, decided to try framing a student who'd been sending him love notes. In
order to make it look like she had stalked and killed him, he tried slashing his back with a steak knife,
with predictably feeble results. Then, having experimented previously with self-asphyxiation, he
decided to hang himself, but found the experience much less pleasurable this time. So finally, he tried
sleeping pills and whiskey, but somehow managed to stumble out into the hallway of his apartment
building, but not before seriously damaging his liver.

Taken to the hospital, he awoke screaming quotations from Nietzsche in rhymed German, and was
diagnosed as suffering a "mixed-personality disorder." He was thought to have undergone some kind
of "psychotic break" and was placed in a locked psychiatric ward to determine if he posed a further
danger to himself or the general public. But he was not really given any therapy, nor treatments, his
stay basically consisted of sitting around the ward, reading the French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan,
and then a ten minute session with a doctor once a week. Even these brief visits though seem to have
been less about providing care than simply assessing his condition. Finally, with no warning and no
apparent change in his mental status, Knipfel was moved to an open ward and then released, mostly
because he reached the maximum stay allowed by state law.

It would be easy enough for Knipfel to rail against the complete inadequacy of the care he received,
and he'd be justified, but that's not what he's after here, mercifully. Instead he offers a rather calm and
dispassionate account of his experience, of the folks he met, and of the process by which he decided he
didn't want to kill himself anymore. This last is where the "Nairobi Trio" comes in. I'll not ruin it for
prospective readers; suffice it to say that they were characters who dressed up as gorillas for a musical
act in an old Ernie Kovacs skit, whose nearly Sisyphiphean plight Knipfel came to identify with.

This is a minor but worthwhile book, less concerned with milking mental illness for sympathy or
drama than with telling an interesting story and telling it with great humor. Knipfel uses an interesting
technique in that he never actually tells the reader whether he thinks he was insane during this period
of time, but all of the folks around him react to him in ways that suggest he was. Unfortunately, the
one part of the story that does not work well is his extended recreation of various hallucinations he
endured. These are fairly tedious. But I suppose if they made sense to us then we'd be in trouble,
which maybe provides the answer to the sanity question.
