    Book Description

This book describes a practical tool to help problem solvers and system designers in a wide variety of settings. The fact that tolerance analysis is known by various other names in various settings - propagation of error, moment propagation, and uncertainty analysis - attests to the wide applicability of this methodology for dealing with random input variables that determine the value of an output variable under consideration.

The author shows the derivation of the method's mathematical foundation, shows potential applications, and gives fully developed numerical results for the applications, which are as diverse as analysis of manufacturing tolerances, scheduling of facilities, inventory loss evaluation, product performance as affected by component performance, and profitability analysis.

If you are already familiar with tolerance analysis under any of its various names, read this book for a clearer understanding, a review of the derivation, and an idea of extended applications. If you are unfamiliar, by all means, read this book.

      Book Description

An account of how courier and express companies used legislative advocacy, litigation, public relations, public affairs, and scholastic appeal to encourage regulatory reforms in the United States, Europe, and intergovernmental organizations during the last quarter of the twentieth century, opening the way for development of global delivery services integrating both private carriers and leading public post offices. An introductory chapter provides a brief account of the evolution of international delivery services. Nine public policy debates are described in detail: U.S. postal monopoly and couriers, international excess baggage rights, U.S. customs restrictions, European postal monopolies, international customs reform, international remail, European postal reform, U.S. postal reform, and reform of the Universal Postal Union. In each public policy discussion, the book summarizes the course of events to early 2001 and reproduces major policy presentations from the period.

        Book Description

The evolution of management theory and practice can best be seen in the context of key thinkers who have both recorded and encouraged change. Theories have influenced practice and practice has created its own theories. Focusing on the lives and writings of significant management thinkers reveals the interconnection of theory and practice as well as which factors have influenced the development of management internationally. The IEBM Handbook of Management Thinking brings together those who have helped shape modern business and management. This one volume edition profiles the international 'management gurus', theorists, researchers and practitioners, both historical and contemporary and evaluates their contribution to the field. Presented against the backdrop of the economic, technological and social changes of their times, this Handbook shows how each has changed 'received wisdom' in their respective fields, how they have made their mark historically and how their impact has influenced contemporary business behaviour and management thinking as a whole. Comprehensive and global in scope and content, this Handbook has been written by renowned international experts, including Jerald Hage, Charles Hampden-Turner, Bruce Kogut, Derek Pugh, Rosemary Stewart and Milan Zeleny, amongst many others. From Sun Tzu in ancient China right the way through to Gary Hamel and C.K. Prahalad on Strategy, Taichi Ohno on Just-In-Time and the contribution of Michael Hammer on Re-engineering, The IEBM Handbook of Management Thinking comprehensively covers the people, concepts, terminology, methodology and practice that have shaped the modern management world.

TONS of great recipes, especially for young, party hosts/goers.

        3 out of 5 stars Not for non-gourmet types.......2005-07-29

I was hoping for a summer cookbook with recipes that featured typical summer foods. This book seemed perfect for a Martha Stewart waspy type but not for someone like me who was looking for twists on the typical fare. Not only that, but the recipes called for fairly expensive fare. If you shop at Central Market and host parties for friends who do also, then this is the book for you.

        5 out of 5 stars A fabulous cookbook........2004-04-20

I adore this cookbook. It's for people who love to cook and want to recombine fresh ingredients in new and interesting ways. It has everything from intriguing salads (like the green bean salad with jicama, yellow peppers, and tomato) to summer soups (like the chilled avocado soup with tomato-cucumber salsa) to entrees (like the spinach pesto-marinated chicken). If you like cooking with fresh foods, this is the cookbook for you.

        5 out of 5 stars The best cookbook I own/A great gift.......2000-07-13

Finally this cookbook has been re-released. I own many, many cookbooks and this is by far my all time favorite. You can use these recipies as a first time try on your guests. No worries.

        5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Summer CookBook!.......2000-05-06

This book is full of delicious and appealing receipes for summer. It's wondefully put together, and so easy to follow. The receipes are easy enough that anyone (even those with little experience) could create wonderful and tastey meals. The photography is beautiful and it's enjoyably constructed. Highlights are the "Cold Lobster Salad" and the "Summer Squash Gratin" ...but, there are so many more that I can't wait to try. I recommend it to any cook out there!

          Book Description

Spread Trading. It's exciting. Stimulating. Highly profitable. Yet - it remains a mystery to most traders. Despite the benefits offered by this dynamic hedge tool, many traders don't understand how to recognize relationships in the commodity and financial markets - and use them to enhance their trading performance.

Now, renowned market maker Howard Abell offers the definitive book on this exciting technique, outlining strategies for analyzing opportunities, tactics for implementation, and savvy advice on overcoming the psychological barriers that hold most spread traders back. Four easy-to-follow sections reveal exactly what it takes to trade based on the concept of differential - or the relationship between commodities or similar products - including …

          1) Psychological factors that make for the most successful spreaders, and developing a strategic game plan for spreading success.

          2) Technical analysis and spread trading - seasonal, cyclical and historical spread relationships to exploit, such as using spreads in the grain market to profit from summer drought.

          3) Spread trading methods of the top market experts. Specific strategies that have proved successful by the specialists in various asset classes.

          4) Every principle & benefit spread trading affords from discovering opportunities in seemingly dull markets to earning greater long-term profits with highly calculated risk.

Good spreaders are daring yet disciplined, focused yet flexible, well-prepared yet able to think on their feet - and Abell arms readers with the analytical and psychological skills required to be not just good, but great traders, as he outlines techniques for …

Trading to win, instead of trading not to lose
Building the inevitability of draw downs into your strategy
Identify the market signal, or "spread entry point"
And many more important tools for winning big by spreading trading.

With a foreword by the CBOT's chairman Patrick Arbor, this timely handbook will equip you to face head-on the challenge of spread trading in the real world.

2 out of 5 stars You should probably pass...........2005-01-10

There's not much content worth your money or time in this volume, whether you're a seasoned pro, a raw trading newbie, or somewhere in between.

A large part of Spread Trading is given over to interviews, which illuminate very little other than a preference among his subjects for trading spreads with trend-following strategies. Sadly, Mr. Abell does nothing to illuminate this further. If you're a trend-follower already the info is nothing new, but if you're not the author fails to provide any tools for understanding why the strategy appeals or how to build a rudimentary system. That's a big shortcoming.

The rest of the interview content is equally tepid. In short, Abell is no Jack Schwager. His interviews aren't quite worthless, but there's very little to take away here -- for either beginners or professionals. If you're looking for interviews with traders who have made it, save your money for whatever copy of the Market Wizards series you don't already own.

Another large chunk of the book is taken up with charts and data tables detailing seasonal spread relationships. This might be of some use, but to make that determination you'll have to fire up the ol' CQG (or testing platform of choice) and test whether or not these relationships still hold. There's no discussion at all about how this data was, or might have been, converted into a profitable trading system. That's fine if you already know what you're doing, but if that's the case you don't need to make a donation to Mr. Abell. The data is intriguing, but if you have a charting service (and a backtester) you should just take a look at some spreads year by year on your own. If not, it's probably over your head until you develop a little more as a trader.

I'm a spread trader myself, and while I dutifully read my partner's copy of this book from cover to cover, I wouldn't recommend you do so. Buy this only if you're willing to pay the cover price for that seasonal data. At least you'll get a nugget of a trading idea there -- although one that requires a great deal of polish.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of Money.......2003-06-15

The book was written 1997, do not get confused with the publishing date of 2003. The printed daily line charts are from 1997 without hardly any description. The same almost applies to the numerous useless pages filled with tables of historical spread trades that (maybe) could have been done between 1981 and 1996. This book neither contains stategies nor addresses risk at all. Furthermore the book is full of sentences of the following kind: "Computer generated Numbers. Most traders have a library of proven computer numbers. They may be applied with success in spread trading. The only caveat however, is that they usually are not self-contained systems and should be used along with the several other devices I have spoken about."
My advice: Walk away from this trade!

If I had wanted a psychology book I would have bought one! Mr. Abell is obviously obsessed with the subject as there is almost nothing in this book that gives the nuts and bolts of spread trading. 45% deals with the psychology of trading, 45% of it are interviews with "successful" spread traders, and the remaining 10% if you discount the charts deals with spreading. Save your money.

It has interviews with spread traders, a Eurodollar spread floor trader, as well as with Steve Moore who publishes daily Internet spread charts.

          Book Description

Few individuals have done more to educate the American public about financial scams than Jay Adkisson. As the creator of Quatloos.com, Jay has helped many thousands of people worldwide avoid being scammed out of many millions of dollars to various investment schemes. The U.S. Senate Finance Committee has twice called Jay as an expert witness on abusive tax schemes. As one of the authors of Asset Protection: Concepts and Strategies (McGraw-Hill 2004), Jay has similarly helped thousands of people avoid dubious asset protection schemes.

In his latest book, Equity-Indexed Annuities: The Smart Consumer's Guide, Jay gives a balanced and objective overview of this advanced form of fixed annuity to better educate consumers of the advantages, disadvantages, and the numerous product options that are available when considering the purchase of this popular retirement vehicle.

This short guide covers all the most important issues that consumers should address before purchasing an equity-indexed annuity, including:

        • How the minimum interest rate is paid, how the maximum return is linked to the stock index, and how participation rates and caps may limit returns.
        • How surrender charges may limit withdrawal rights for a period of years after the annuity is purchased, and why the annuity should not be purchased if the consumer will need the cash during this period.
        • How the annuity payments may be made, and what can happen upon the death of the annuitant.
        • How annuities benefit from tax-deferral, how taxes are paid upon withdrawal or when annuity payments are made, and tax considerations upon the death of the annuitant.
        • How the annuity and annuity payments may be protected from creditors in some states, and how in other states they may be protected by proper planning done in advance of claims.

This guide should also give consumers the ability to intelligently answer the most fundamental question: Is an equity-indexed annuity right for me?

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Concise and Objective.......2006-10-01

Bought after having read about it in Jay's newsletter. This is a guide that every insurance agent who sells EIAs should read, and every person who is interested in purchasing EIAs should read -- there would be no more improper or unsuitable sales, and those people who could benefit by them can do so without worry.

There is no description, discussion or plugging of any particular insurance company or annuity product, but rather the book focuses on when and when not EIAs should be used. This is absolutely not a self-promotional book or one that pumps EIAs in all circumstances. As the author repeats over and over, there are some occasions when EIAs should not be bought because of liquidity concerns or tax issues. Yet, when they can be used, they can be great products for retirement savings and wealth preservation.

Unique among annuity books, there is a section on asset protection utilizing annuities in states that protect them by statute, which is of course not surprising considering Jay's background and his first book on asset protection with Chris Riser.

Smart insurance agents will give this book to each prospective purchaser of EIAs to read first to avoid any later misunderstandings.

                        Description:
We investigate the pricing problem for pure endowment contracts whose life contingent payment is linked to the performance of a tradable risky asset or index. The heavy tailed nature of asset return distributions is incorporated into the problem by modeling the price process of the risky asset as a finite variation Levy process. We price the contract through the principle of equivalent utility. Under the assumption of exponential utility, we determine the optimal investment strategy and show that the indifference price solves a non-linear partial-integro-differential equation (PIDE). We solve the PIDE in the limit of zero risk aversion, and obtain the unique risk-neutral equivalent martingale measure dictated by indifference pricing. In addition, through an explicit-implicit finite difference discretization of the PIDE we numerically explore the effects of the jump activity rate, jump sizes and jump skewness on the pricing and the hedging of these contracts.

                                  Book Description

It is for the rare moral beauty of the subject of this brief biography, rather than for her mental attainments, that the author would more particularly bespeak the attention of the reader. If this true story of a triumph over afflictions and disadvantages which are almost unique in their magnitude, help some who hear of it to appreciate more highly their own blessings, and to believe more fully in the tender care of the only One who is able thus to create a fountain of joy in the midst of a desert of privation, this little book would not have been written in vain.
