Italian/English Business Glossary.......2000-05-20
For my purposes, I found this book to be very inadequate, if not inutile. I have a workable knowledge of the Italian language in both a conversational and written (in terms of journalism and literature) sense, but my business vocabulary is seriously lacking. Hence,I thought it prudent to purchase this book to help me with a project I am doing at work for which I must read Italian financial and insurance company and related informational websites to write a report on e-commerce in the Italian finance/insurance market. As in English, there are many every-day words in Italian that when put in a business context take on a different meaning. This book did not contain any of these words for which I needed definitions. In fact, what is included in this book are the larger words for which most people wouldn't require a glossary, because the words resemble their English counterparts. Another thing that this book seriously lacked was a glossary for acronyms and abbreviations, which as any businessman knows, are bandied about in the business world like take-out menus in a New York apartment building. You won't even find the English or Italian translation for S.p.A....not even under societa. I recommend looking elsewhere for your business Italian language needs.

Straight from the CEO: The World's Top Business Leaders Reveal Ideas That Every Manager Can Use, by William Dauphinais and Colin Price of the management consulting firm Price Waterhouse, is an accessible nuts-and-bolts examination of the way in which heads of some three dozen major corporations from around the globe look at critical matters such as motivation, creativity, customer service and revitalization. Individual chapters devoted to the reflections of top executives from powerhouses including British Airways, OshKosh B'Gosh, Pitney Bowes, and Swisscom are interspersed with sidebars that add analysis along with an overall perspective.
Book Description
Straight from the CEO reveals the practical, far-reaching insights of the world's top CEOs, including:
Royal Dutch/Shell's Cor Herkströter, mastermind of the most ambitious makeover among the world's energy behemoths;
British Airways' Sir Colin Marshall, the market genius who powered the carrier's celebrated turnaround;
Chase Manhattan's Walter Shipley, architect of one of the largest mergers ever to take place in the financial sector;
Monsanto's Robert B. Shapiro, who has raised the hurdle bar on growth and profitability goals, although the company is at the peak of its form;
British Aerospace's Sir Richard Evans, developer of one of Britain's biggest and boldest corporate-change management programs;
Compaq Computer's Eckhard Pfeiffer, who has transformed himself from a successful turnaround artist into a hard-driving champion of continuous corporate renewal.
Straight from the CEO is a major event, providing the rare opportunity to hear directly from the world's greatest business leaders. No ivory-tower theorizing, no speeches, no "consultant speak," these are the practical insights of leaders who every day must find ways to test and validate new ideas, implement change to improve the bottom line, and ultimately focus on the core ideas that will truly reshape their corporations. Straight from the CEO is an invaluable tool for managers at every level.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, look for hardback.......2007-05-19
Excellent book with many articles and opinions from top CEOs. These are some of the best business books out there, letting you see how the people who run these companies think. I don't know if the paperback has it or not, and honestly I would imagine given what happened it probably has been removed, but in the hardback version, the late Kenneth Lay, CEO of Enron for the majority of years (except for 4 months when Jeff Skilling took over), writes his own little 8 page article on it. I don't know if the paperback has it or not, but I do know any hardback copy from 1998 would.
Brainpower is more important than Brawn.......2006-01-27
Small upstarts can successfully attack even giant, established corporations. You need to be a "smart" manager, to defend your organization from these threats.
If your company is facing some of the unique challenges of the 21st Century, you could benefit from the advice of CEO's who have already faced them. In this book, CEO's of successful companies have given advice on a wide range of issues facing corporations today, from balancing global resources and facing international competition, to brand building and corporate culture. In Straight From the CEO, you will learn about the innovative solutions, and the thinking behind them, that leaders in every industry have developed as a response to the challenges facing companies today.
Here are a few examples:
Percy Barnevik, chairman of ABB Asea Brown Boveri, explains how decentralizing a global organization can protect it from its own bureaucratic weight and encourage innovation.
Felix Rosenberg, CEO of Swisscom, explains how to combat global competitors by internationalizing your company fast and reinventing your company to prepare for change and innovation.
Sir Richard Evans, CEO of British Aerospace cautions that CEO's must not only have a vision of what needs to be done, but also a commitment to becoming deeply involved in the process from beginning to end.
Straight from the CEO.......2000-06-13
Very persuasive book, with new and bright ideas for the future. It has motivated me to become a more people oriented person. I will take closer looks and my employees needs and wants, taking care of the customer has become one of my greatest concerns. Thank you for the edge on life. Omar Cumberbatch, CEO Royal Family Pro.
Each piece is too short to provide any satisfying insight.......1999-11-30
Straight from over thirty of today's most innovative CEOs come the ideas that are reshaping and reinvigorating the modern corporation-written exclusively for this book. Straight from the CEO is a major work, because the world rarely hears directly from the great contemporary business leaders-the chief movers and shakers of major corporations. Working closely with the Price Waterhouse management team, a wide variety of chief executives who are successfully managing today's rapid pace of economic change present their ideas about leading and motivating people, unleashing innovation and creativity, and learning from customers to revitalize their businesses. Among the CEOs represented in the book are the heads of British Airways, Compaq Computer, Monsanto, Royal Dutch/Shell, Enron, Chase Manhattan Bank, and Warner-Lambert. The scope is worldwide: from Bangkok to Jakarta, from Dusseldorf to Dallas. No ivory tower theorizing, no speeches, no "consultant speak," these are the practical insights of leaders who every day must find ways to test and validate new ideas, implement change to improve the bottom line, and ultimately focus on the core ideas that will truly reshape their corporation.
Straight from the CEO is an important tool for managers at every level, focusing on such issues as creating loyalty to customers, organizing globally, fostering individual employee motivation, and leveraging corporate values to enhance performance. These are the pressing issues that face every manager who strives to sort out valuable contributions from impractical ideas, the gold from the dross, and then take action that gets results. As intellectually stimulating as it is practical, Straight from the CEO is an invaluable report from the executive trenches.
By necessity brief, the many pieces (I hesitate to call them chapters or even articles) lack depth, assume much and as a result are quite unstatisfying; but they do leave the reader hungry for more!

BRAINPOWER.......1999-03-05
Based on a collection of essays by global corporate leaders, the book is structured around 6 themes: globalisation, radical change, leadership, culture, innovation, and customer relationship. Percy Barnevik of ABB, explains how to balance global resources and local autonomy, Richard Evans of British Aerospace shows why radical changes required CEOs to get out of their ivory towers. The book is well illustred and easy to read. It doesn't contain academic theory or consultancy methods. It is a step by step guide explained by experienced CEO who can help solve your company's problems. Franck Renand, Prof. of Strategic Management, ISLA, Oporto, Portugal.

Book Description
In the late 1980's the booming real estate market in Southern California reached the peak of that cycle and headed downward. The severity of the decline wiped out reserves of some well- managed mature companies that depended on the sale of and income from real estate to pay the investors, the majority of which were smaller pension plans.
An Investment In Time tracks what happened to one of these companies from the turnover of several million in assets to a court appointed receiver. Although the receiver is an attorney, he employs a legal firm of which he is a partner to handle the majority of the transactions. For the next six-and-a-half years the receiver collects over $2.5 million, the majority of which he pays to himself directly or to his law firm. While the president is charged with wrongdoing and criminal charges filed, the passive officers and directors are dragged into the ordeal. In addition to their own investments being wiped out, over $3 million in penalties are assessed.
The characters are fictional or composite as is the storyline. However, the legal happenings and receiver billing is information filed with the court. The plot is awesome, and the results are unthinkable. A story you won't easily forget.

Ulrich Steger¿s new book, Corporate Diplomacy, opens the door to a new perception of what responsible and sustainable leadership is all about and broadens our vision to better grasp the complexity of the global agenda."" Jürgen Dormann, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Aventis SA "This book is a timely reminder that we are all sitting in the same boat, whether we represent business, NGOs or government: we all carry a joint, yet differentiated responsibility for the fate of future generations. For me it is also a stark manifestation of the fact that diplomacy simply understood as defence strategy, or a tactic to camouflage discord, is not sustainable. Corporate diplomacy hinges on the social and environmental responsibility and the credibility of a company, as much as it is about explaining and positioning its business case." Dr Claude Martin, Director General, WWF International "Ulrich Steger deals with the challenges of how to communicate efficiently with public networks, whether they are governments, unions, NGOs, the press or the general public, both in normal times and in times of corporate crises. The IMD background of Ulrich Steger guarantees that we are not exposed to theory but to well researched and structured practice."" Hans-Dietrich Winkhaus, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Telekom, former CEO of Henkel

Book Description
Tax-benefit models are powerful tools for the analysis of the impact of policy reform, in regular use around the world in government and research organizations. This study focuses on one particular model, POLIMOD. The authors provide an illustration of the type of analysis that can be performed, document the inner layers of data manipulation and model construction that shape its outputs, and examine the reliability of those outputs based on a validation against external sources.

The warm, humorous and true story of christy Brown's supreme courage and triumph over the severest of handicaps.
Customer Reviews:
An inspirational book.......2004-11-09
This was a very inspiring book written by Christy Brown, who was born with cerebral palsy, about his own life and the struggles that he had to overcome. Christy was born in 1933 in Ireland. Against many other's pushing to have Christy institutionalized, Christy's mother did not want to put him into an institution, therefore she kept him at home to be raised with the rest of the family. Christy surprised readers with his amazing abilities. He was able to communicate with his speech and his ability to write with his left foot. One night he lay on the kitchen floor, picked up a piece of chalk with his left foot and wrote, "mother" on the floor. This surprised his family and also gave them a lot of hope and faith in Christy. This is when Christy broke down the barriers of communication and started to overcome his physical disabity. He went through and overcame the struggles of reading, writing, painting and eventually typing. He was able to participate in many activities, such as playing in neighborhood games. He was a very extremely inspiring man who accomplished a great deal in his life. This book would be wonderful to use in the classroom to show students, who do not have a disability, how to understand what students with disabilities go through and their abilities and potentials.
A TRIUMPHANT AND INSPIRATIONAL STORY..........2004-09-14
This is the story of a young man who was born in Ireland in 1932, after a difficult birth and with a severe disability that the doctors of the time were unable to name. They urged his parents to disavow him, as he was, they believed, an imbecile with a severely spastic body. Moreover, his parents then had five other children, all healthy. Christy's mother, however, refused to institutionalize him, keeping him at home and treating him as she would her other children. It would not be until years later that she would learn that Christy's affliction was severe cerebral palsy.
Imprisoned in a world all his own and seeming without means to communicate, Christy, at the age of five, made an attempt that was to change his life forever. Rather than being imbecilic, Christy was actually highly intelligent. He took a piece of chalk with his left foot and, having captured the attention of his family, proceeded to scrawl on the floor a reasonable facsimile of the letter "A", astounding his loving family in the process.
By breaking the communications barrier, Christy demonstrated that he could learn and understand. From then on, his capacity for learning was prodigious. Who would have thought that within his severely contorted and convulsed body lay a razor sharp mind and a thirst for knowledge? Certainly not the medical community, which had been so willing to consign him to institutional living. Armed with his left foot, the only part of his body over which he seemed to have some control, Christy Brown would demonstrate to the world who he really was. He was, after all, not the imbecile that the medical community had originally thought but an intelligent and sentient human being.
This is Christy Brown's triumphant and inspirational story of his battle to learn to read, write, and paint, all with the aid of his left foot. It is an inspirational story of his quest for fulfillment. His yearning to be as others are is palpable, and his struggle for acceptance beyond the borders of his home and his physical limitations are well articulated. Christy Brown gives the reader a birds-eye view of what it is like to be a person with severe cerebral palsy. First published in Great Britain in 1954, when Christy Brown was twenty-two, this book, written with his left foot, is a testament to the resiliency of the human spirit.

My Left Foot.......2004-05-04
The book My Left Foot by Christy Brown was an inspiring novel about a young boy yearning to live a life full of communication. The story began with doctors giving his parents no hope for the future for this boy with cerebral palsy. Life takes an unexpected turn when his left foot comes alive. Over time challenges arise. Some obstacles are over come while other hurdles are left for him to face. With his mother by his side they were determined to struggle through poverty and his severe disability.
my left foot review.......2003-02-15
The book my left foot is very interesting because it deals with a child born with a disease that gives him no control over his body
but he, at a young age learned to use his left foot to write, eat, actually do anything a normal person can do with there hands. christy shows in this book how any person of any race, or even with any disease has the same feelings and are capable of almost anything.
My Left Foot a story of hope and dreams.......2003-02-15
I think my Left Foot is a very touching novel that shows a kind of spirit in a person to succeed that was never thought possible. In places in the book I was sad , happy and places were funny. Thats one of the things that made it good all different emotions and the life of a real person with real problems.
My Left Foot.......2003-02-15
I think that this book is pretty boring because it is about a dude that has to use his left foot all the time and it just tells about his life which if you ask me I don't think that he has one.
