4 out of 5 stars Small but good.......2004-05-14

This one is for a serious beginner to intermediate brewer. The author is a professional mead and wine judge with a wealth of experience and a few tricks that surprised me especially for the small size of the book. It skimps out on recipes though. It should be noted that this is written by an experienced mead judge.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best book for beginners............2000-11-21

If you are looking for a step-by-step instruction guide on the process of making mead, this is not the book for you. While he does not spend much time on history, he spends most of the book telling about the chemicals and make-up of mead and it's components. And the processes that he does give, are quite vague. The recipes that are included (which are few) are all based on chemical components, rather than natural processes. However, the book is well written and very easy to read. Another problem I found with the book, is that it is 20 years old. And being written based on the chemical aspect, this could mean that it is outdated. There are however, a few good points of information throughout the book. But if you are looking for a step-by-step "instruction book", this is perhaps not the best choice.

4 out of 5 stars Best book for BREWING mead, for beginner or serious student........1999-06-21

Unlike many of the mead making books being written today, Roger Morse's book does not spend any amount of time on history. It goes into specific detail on the selection of honeys, the techniques used to bring out the full flavor of each type of honey, and each type of mead. It details the variables in production in a clear and understandable manner, and has one of the best selections of recipes for different types of mead that you will find. It also gives you everything you need to know to create your own recipes as well.

                          Book Description

This work is a critique, from an ethical perspective, of contemporary trends in lifelong learning policy and management. It focuses attention on 21 trends, each represented by a fable that is drawn from the experience of a stake-holder. The trends have been selected as exemplifying common responses to contemporary cultural change. They are drawn from a number of different countries and across educational sectors: higher, adult and vocational education and post-compulsory schooling. Each fable is explained, examined and grounded in scholarship on educational change and applied ethics through an accompanying account.
The work is directed to educational policy makers and managers. It has been designed for use as a resource in advanced under-graduate and post-graduate professional development programs in educational policy, leadership, change, change management, justice and ethics. Its unique use of fables, accompanying accounts and background theory allows readers to engage with the text at different levels.

Provides basic outlines ranging from two to six pages that highlight the structure of the Code and integrate the crazy quilt of cross-references, major exceptions, and definitions scattered over many sections into one approachable scheme. Also includes recurring features that point out alternative ways a taxpayer could have planned his transactions or presented his case and traps for those who think they have located statutory gaps.

                              Book Description

William Bentley, pastor in Salem, Massachusetts from 1783 to his death in 1819, was unlike anyone else in America's founding generation. For he had come to unique conclusions about how best to maintain a traditional understanding of Christianity in a world ever changing by the forces of the Enlightenment. Like some of his contemporaries, Bentley preached a liberal Christianity, with its benevolent God and salvation through moral living, but he-and in New England he alone-also preached a rational Christianity, one that offered new and radical claims about the power of God and the attributes of Jesus. Drawing on over a thousand of Bentley's sermons, J. Rixey Ruffin traces the evolution of Bentley's theology. Neither liberal nor deist, Bentley was instead what Ruffin calls a "Christian naturalist," a believer in the biblical God and in the essential Christian narrative but also in God's unwillingness to interfere in nature after the Resurrection. In adopting such a position, Bentley had pushed his faith as far as he could toward rationalism while still, he thought, calling it Christianity. But this book is as much a social and political history of Salem in the early republic as it is an intellectual biography; it not only delineates Bentley's ideas, but perhaps more important, it unravels their social and political consequences. Using Bentley's remarkable diary and a vast archive of newspaper accounts, tax records, and electoral returns, Ruffin brings to life the sailors, widows, captains and merchants who lived with Bentley in the eastern parish of Salem. A Paradise of Reason is a study of the intellectual and tangible effects of rational religion in mercantile Salem, of theology and philosophy but also of ideology: of the social politics of race and class and gender, the ecclesiastical politics of establishment and dissent, the ideological politics of republicanism and classical liberalism, and the party politics of Federalism and Democratic-Republicanism. In bringing to light the fascinating life and thought of one of early New England's most interesting historical figures, Ruffin offers a fresh perspective on the formative negotiations between Christianity and the Enlightenment in the years of America's founding.

At age 39, Lois Bhatt, the mother of a three-year-old daughter and a nine-month-old son was diagnosed with Stage II Breast Cancer. I'm Sorry You Have to Be Here, relates her fears, grief, anger, and hope as an individual and as a wife, mother, sister, friend and neighbor. It documents the complexities of what a mother diagnosed with cancer must face - misdiagnoses, surgery, chemotherapy and radiation - while continuing to parent young children and maintain a loving relationship with her husband. It is a very personal story. It identifies problems and fears that face a mother with a life threatening disease. The story is an emotional one speckled with many humorous moments, delving beneath the surface of diagnosis and treatment to reveal the changes and triumphs a family endures.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for mothers diagnosed w/ breast cancer.......2003-03-25

I'm a 29 yr. old mother of a 2 1/2 yr. old and a 1 yr. old, and I've been diagnosed with breast cancer. A woman I work with came across this book at her ob/gyn's office and passed it along to me. This was the best book so far that I've read on the subject of breast cancer. It was so good, that I read it over the course of 2 days! I searched high and low for books that I could relate to. I wanted to read something written for young moms with small children, battling breast cancer, and there is nothing out there, except this book. Although the author is 10 years older than I am, her children are the same age as mine and I could relate to so many of the situations that she talks about in her book. The book was very easy to read, it didn't contain a lot of big medical words that were hard to understand, it was very straight forward. She basically walks you through her experience and adds a touch of humor here and there.
I went out of my way to go to a book signing that Lois Bhatt was speaking at, to meet her, and thank her for writing such a good book, and she was a warm person that took the time to speak to everyone that wanted to talk to her at the book signing. I recommend this book to anyone that is a parent, and that's battling breast cancer. It's an inspiring book!

5 out of 5 stars A Great Book to Get You Through Rough Times.......2003-01-16

This wonderful book was like having a friend with me through chemotherapy. It was honest and funny. I'd recommend it to anyone dealing with a cancer diagnosis or facing chemotherapy.

5 out of 5 stars This Mother's Story Touched My Heart.......2002-12-04

Reading Lois Cappetta Bhatt's touching story of her experiences with breast cancer was so well written and so moving, that I couldn't stop reading it. I lost my own mother to breast cancer four years ago and it brought back many memories for me. It felt like I was reading a letter from a friend, especially her reflections on how her illness affected her relationships with her children, husband, friends, acquaintances, strangers and also her spiritual struggle. She has such a strikingly honest style of writing. I couldn't help but admire her for her candor as well as her courage. I plan to give the book to two of my girlfriends (also mothers of young children) currently battling cancer. Kudos to Ms. Bhatt for her searing portrayal of triumph over this dreaded disease.

5 out of 5 stars please read this book.......2002-10-16

Thank you, thank you to Lois Bhatt for writing this book detailing her experience with breast cancer. Lois manages to be funny and humane while dealing with difficult facts and sharing invaluable information. Even if the reader has not been diagnosed with breast cancer, chances are someone close to her has been, or will be. Read Lois Bhatt's well writted book to gain some understanding of fighting the disease. Learn why you should never say,"HHooow aaarrre you?" to help friends and loved ones who are facing it.

I stayed up one night until I finished the book because I just didn't want to put it down.

5 out of 5 stars I', Sorry You Have to Be Here.......2002-09-18

Lois Bhatt's 1st book, an honest, funny, poignant, and informative account of her bout with breast cancer, is a gem. Ms. Bhatt's writing is filled with extraordinary detailed observations, but not the irritating kind; she points out things she remembers seeing, hearing, tasting, but in a natural way that flows with the story and forms an image, a sound, or a taste, in the reader's mind. And this is a story, not a dry recitation of her experience, but a welcoming invitation to re-live the experience, the good, and the bad, with the author and her family. I could not put it down.
