Great for someone with NO experience.......2001-10-04
This is basically a text book for a first year college student. The information was relatively vague. I was disappointed, but the book would be very beneficial to someone just starting in the business. I was looking for concrete examples and "life saving" ideas and this book did not offer that.

Book Description
Due to the lack of mathematical sophistication of business students, the management science is difficult for both students and professors. Quantitative Methods for Management, 3e attempts to reduce these difficulties by providing a student-oriented approach to the material, with more emphasis on application (how it works) and problem recognition (when it works) and less on derivation (why it works).

fine start for cooking italian .......2006-01-02
The Italian Cooking Encyclopedia is an enormous book that has detailed photographs showing the reader how to prepare and cook italian recipes. Every recipe is very simple to follow and understand. This is a great type of book for me because I am a visual learner, I need to see the finished product so that I can see what Im cooking. Plus the photographs show how mouth watering the dishes are.
Another wonderful thing is that the encyclopedia includes roughly 100 or so pages describing the ingredients in the recipes. It shows different pastas, grains, cheeses, and vegetables which is a great tool for future use in deciphering Italian recipes in other cookbooks also.
I love a lot of the recipes in the book inluding the tiramisu, and the tuna canneloni. There are a lot of good standards such as linguini with clams, and fettucine with cream sauce.
I recieved this book when I was just learning to cook (about 8 years ago) and I refered back to this a lot. It would be a great gift for the beginning chef or someone who loves colorful cookbooks.
MOLTO BENE!.......2004-06-14
This book has true, authentic Italian recipes that taste out of this world! I especially like all the information provide about the various pastas, cheeses, herbs, etc. The recipes are wonderful but most are not for the novice cook. If you love Italian food and love to cook, definitely try to find a copy of this book!
Very good stuff.......2000-12-05
This cookbook is a delight - beautiful pictures, clear directions, and marvelous results. All the recipes I have made from this book have been a success, especially the bolognese sauce. The "picture-book" section about pastas, cheeses, spirits, and such is a great visual guide to elements of Italian cooking. The only drawback is the author's tendency to use Italian terms without explaning what they are, but with a little brainpower, the term becomes clear. A great addition to a food library.
Wonderful Book.......2000-11-05
I picked this cookbook up and looked at it when someone brought it in at work, I was so impressed with the overall book that I ordered it for my Father-In-Law for Christmas. The beautifully laid out recipes and pictures make it easy to understand what your final dish should look like. The Italian terms may throw you a little but you usually can figure out what it means. Very nice sections on pasta, vegetables, rice & grains and apertifs are very educational. My father-in-law will be thrilled with this.

This is a wonderful cookbook. It is easy to follow, authentic, and has lots of pictures. There are also some recipies that are similar to old family recipies I have.

In addition there are many background sections on how to make pasta, stocks, which are great. With 1001 recipes you will never be bored trying something new at the dinner table. Buon appetito!

One of my favorites.......2005-03-02
I have this cookbook in a slightly different edition, and it is definitely one of my favorites. The photography is beautiful -- many of the recipes have step-by-step photos in addition to a nice photo of the finished dish. The photos, paired with the clear instructions and explanations of ingredients, make this a really useful book. I have tried several recipes out of it and have never been disappointed. It has everything, from plain everyday fare to fancier company dishes. It is a shame this one is out of print -- get a copy if you can find it!
FABULOUS!!!.......2004-12-03
One of the more useful and immediately applicable cookbooks in my rather large library. Excellent layout, with clear descriptions and helpful pictures on each page. Top-notch photos, but this is so much more than a coffee table book or a pretty cover. This book is usable! From antipasta to dessert, I absolutely love this book. Can't go wrong!
Customer Reviews:
This is the best cookbook I own........2007-03-16
I collect cookbooks and especially love Italian ones (both of my parents grew up in Italy). When my friend bought this for me, I was hesitant that a "sale table" book would be any good.
Oh, how wrong I was.
Every recipe I've tried from this book has the approval of my Italian-raised mom (a big deal to me) and the adoration of my non-Italian foodie friends, as well. The step-by-step pictures help me make sure I'm "on track" with any new recipe and the gorgeous food pictures certainly encourage me to try new recipes, as well.
My favorites:
Parmesan Risotto
Suppli
Baked eggs with tomatoes
The bolognese is good and I've been tweaking the recipe each time to get it closer to my Nonna's recipe, but even straight out the gate it was a pretty good facsimile.
Excellent and informative.......2005-05-01
This is a very pretty and priacticle book. Full of color illustrations and recipes. A must for all italian cooks. The book itseld is very nice looking, sleek and sturdy.

Customer Reviews:
Culinary trip.......2002-10-16
Personally I think this is a wonderful book to have in any kitchen. It eases you through standard `items' in the Italian cuisine, such as the types of pastas, cheeses, and other assorted goods. Each and every example includes full-colour photos with a clear lay-out showing what is what.
The meals are well divided into the different regions as well as appetizers, diners, dessert, and everything in between.
If you don't own any Italian cuisine cookbooks yet, this is a solid recommendation. If you already own a few, it might still teach you a trick or two.

Book Description
This book deals with commodity price stabilization. It explores the contemporary changes in global trade agreements and their relationship to the ongoing changes in international and regional trade structures and economic integration. It takes a wholistic, interdisciplinary approach, including economic, legal and political aspects; examines the EC and NAFTA as important trade blocs, and their impact on global economies. Investigates the Chinese approach to trade management, the oil price stabilization policies, and seabed minerals; discusses discrimination in international trade. The interdisciplinary nature of the book is given prominence through the layout of the various parts. Part I examines the legal issues of commodity trade, investigating the debate over whether international trade agreements create "hard law" or "soft law." Part II discusses the political economy of contemporary global trade issues, including the rise of intraindustry trade and discrimination in international trade. Part III addresses the recent trend towards regionalism and trade blocs, focusing on the EC and NAFTA, and their economic implications. Finally, Part IV presents the issues of commodity trade stabilization for minerals and oil, including both land-based and seabed commodities.

Customer Reviews:
Truly a Financial Literacy Enhancer! .......2007-03-04
Whether your trying to save a little extra for your pockets, for a house, or your kids college funds, this book is helpful with getting you on the right track.
A Good Reinforcement of the Financial Basics.......2006-07-17
This book does a very good job of divulging some very disturbing financial trends that, while on the one hand are not limited to African Americans, on the other hand they tend to disproportionately affect African Americans. The target demographic of this book appears to focus in particular on African American women, primarily the single female with one or more dependents. The book is written to a lesser extent with other demographic sub-groups in mind. That said, the book is nonetheless a very useful introduction to the subject of money matters, which sadly is a topic in dire need of discussion within the African American community.
The book contains a number of good points, the best of which are the following: knowing where your money goes and having a goal, using time to your advantage (as opposed to letting others use time against you, like most of us do), developing an emergency fund before you begin saving and investing (which too few of us do, even if we do save and invest), emphasizing the importance of credit, credit ratings and the wise use of credit, paying cash for most of your purchases, presenting the perils of being dependent on a person or institution for some or all of your livelihood, unlearning bad money habits and learning good money habits, and reminding the reader that not taking control of one's destiny has dire consequences.
To be honest, the book also has a number of key demerits. First, the author's financial compounding examples do not factor in mutual fund expenses and taxes. Second, contrary to what the author believes, buying a house is not always the wisest investment, even though (and this is generally speaking) houses usually appreciate in value (he also neglected to discuss the hidden expenses associated with a house). Third, for someone who spent a lot of time railing against excessive credit card use and advocating for the use of cash to pay for purchases, it seems odd to me that he never once discussed the use of debit cards and other pre-paid cards. Fourth, his information on contribution limits to tax shelters like the IRA and 401k are woefully out of date, but then, given that the book was last printed in 2001, the author may be forgiven for this (and perhaps should pen a revised edition). Fifth, the author contends that liquidity is both expensive and disruptive to the best plans- this is typical business school financial non-sense (ask Mr. Warren Edward Buffett about how he feels about having 45 billion dollars of liquidity) as it panders to the erroneous notion that one should have all his or her capital put to work earning some specified return. Most of us keep our funds in cash because for one, given the daily insults we suffer, we may not know what is coming at us next, and second, many of us are still woefully ignorant of ways to put our hard earned money to work. As such, someone truly concerned about African American financial health would not utter such silly remarks. Finally, Brown is wrong when he says that insurance coverage is an investment strategy; insurance coverage is a cost.
Still, potential readers must keep in mind that this book is intended to impart some basic financial knowledge to those who either have little or no financial know-how, or are guided by some crippling financial misconceptions (or more typically, both). The more financially savvy among us might get angry at his treatment of some topics, given what we know, but would have to agree wholeheartedly with his coverage of some very disturbing financial trends.
In sum, I have to give Brown five stars for having the courage and foresight to tackle this looming crisis, if not outright disaster. By now, most of us know not to depend on getting that long ago promised forty acres and a mule, and now our attention must turn to thwarting the attempt to reinstitute feudalism (or is it slavery ?!?) of a financial sort upon the masses. I intend to purchase a few more copies of this book and give them to some people I know who are in dire need of its information. We've gone through too much and come too far as a people to even consider a wholehearted return to servitude- no, slavitude, and God as my witness, I WILL NOT GO BACK!
Book Purchase.......2005-10-17
The process was smooth, I received the book fast and it is great reading. Very informational and helpful. Thank you.
Great Advice, but no follow through.......2005-10-06
When I got this book, I couldn't put it down. After reading it, I was anxious to get started on setting my goals as Mr Brown described in chapter 16, but I hit a roadblock. Mr. Brown gives an example of the goal planner, but he didn't show how the math works to get the amount one should save each month. Mr. Brown even states,
"The following goal-setting forms will serve as a map in guiding you toward your desired financial goals. They are here to assist you in your planning. Feel free to use the formula over and over again for your actual desires."
One frustrating problem, Mr. Brown gives NO FORMULAS.
I followed up by going to Mr. Brown's company website and sending an e-mail explaining my frustration, I got a reply telling me to visit the website and click on "need a financial plan." This requires me to enter in my credit card information and be charged $25 for Mr. Brown to preform the calculations for me (the same calculations that should be outlined in Chapter 16). In addition, I get a free copy of a book that I just bought. WHAT?!
I bought this book expecting to be given the tools to be independent when setting up my goals. Or at least to understand how calculations are made before I seek out professional help. But Mr Brown only brought me halfway when he suggests ways to set up goals and then in turn doesn't fully explain them.
Simply Excellent!.......2005-02-19
This book is great! Its not for African-Americans, its for everyone especially African-Americans. As a young African-American professional, I can relate to every chapter in this book. After reading the first chapter, I could not put it down.
Jesse, you are the man! Thank You!

Book Description
Reading Pay Yourself First is like taking a financial investment course for the small cost of the book. Its easy to read format provides knowledge and information in a context that makes it easy to grasp. The author, Jesse Brown is sincerely concerned about you and your financial well being. In fact, Mr. Brown looks at his expertise as "providing people with a plan for better living" . Just as he advises municipal agencies, corporations and others, Pay Yourself First provides you with a step by step how to process that gives you the foundation that will aid you in taking charge of your destiny and placing your financial future on the road to independence. If you're like most novice or first time investors, the idea of money markets, stocks, mutual funds, bonds, and treasury notes is intimidating. Brown says, " If you want financial security or independence, it really is as simple as, Pay Yourself First.

To the point.......2001-02-12
Comments: I had an opportunity to hear a segment on WHUR last week and then got the tape. I found it entriguing and enlightening. I want to know more about investing. I am ready to take the leap of faith, but I don't want to make any decisions without a better understanding. Thank you in advance for sharing your wisdom.
This is the road map !!!.......2001-02-12
Comments: I listened to your presentation and I realize I have so many financial "errors" that we MUST pass along to our younger generations the importance of becoming financially saavy. We MUST get them beyond the mindset of giving literally millions of dollars away - aka NIKE, TIMBERLAND, HILFIGER, PERRY ELLIS, NAUTICA, EDDIE BAUER, etc. and not reap ANY benefits of these huge consumer investments. We pump over 400B into the economy - we can turn this around. I know you know - but more of us have got to learn this - and this means ME.

Book Description
Five-star General Dwight D. Eisenhower was arguably the single most important military figure of World War II. For many historians, his memoirs of this eventful period of U.S. history have become the single most important record of the war. Crusade in Europe tells the complete story of the war as Eisenhower planned and lived it. Through his eyes, the enormous scope and drama of the war--strategy, battles, moments of fateful decision--become fully illuminated in all their fateful glory.
Yet this is also a warm and richly human account. Ike recalls the long months of waiting, planning, and working toward victory in Europe. His personal record of the tense first hours after he had issued the order to attack--and there was no turning back--leaves no doubt of Eisenhower's travail and reveals this great man in ways that no biographer has ever surpassed.

Gone but not forgotten.......2007-04-19
This book is required reading for those interested in World War II history, it took me 20 years to get around to it and am glad I did. Written when most of the principles were still alive (Monty, Clark, Bradley), it is less than frank and open. However, it is an interesting compendium of WWII history as told from the Cat Bird's Seat. Ike was not a great general, but he was a hell of a manager of men and logistics. This is a very good book and all folks interested in WWII need to read it.
The View from the Top.......2006-04-30
Eisenhower's "Crusade in Europe" is a must read for anyone with an interest in WWII. In this book, you can see the European war from the perspective of the man who led the war. What many considered Eisenhower's greatest asset, the diplomatic manner that helped the Americans and British function as one Allied team, is also very apparent in this book.
Eisenhower's story, written just a few years after the war ended, gives the reader a great high-level perspective on the war. He mentions his staff work with the War Department at the beginning of the war before being posted to Europe, and then the balance of the book covers the Mediterranean and European campaigns against the Germans. This isn't a comprehensive history of the war in Europe (for example, he covers Operation Market-Garden in three paragraphs), but instead more of a general overview from Eisenhower's perspective.
Many consider Eisenhower's diplomatic skills - his ability to lead a multi-national organization - as his greatest asset and the reason he was chosen to lead the Allied Armies in Europe. Eisenhower carried this over into his book: he is never critical of any of his subordinates, defends all of their actions and beliefs (even when Eisenhower disagreed or overruled them), and never even mentions specific names in the couple of instances where he says that commanders were relieved. While this is certainly a laudable trait in a leader, it doesn't make this a particularly insightful book.
Although "Crusade in Europe" lacks that hard-hitting punch, Eisenhower does tell some entertaining and fun personal stories. Because of these stories and Eisenhower's unique perspective on the war, I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in World War II.
Crystal clear mobilization and communication.......2005-12-29
Maybe someone would correct me, but it is my impression that he really wrote this - it does not have the feel of the ghost writer that often comes in to provide the voice-over for the great man.
The personality that comes through is quite similar to that which Eisenhower conveyed in public. Able. Able to create consensus. A listener. Casual. Hands in back pockets. Stern if need be. Analytical. Concerned for his troops.
But most of all the sense emerges of Eisenhower being a modern organization man.
The job for America beginning in 1940 [when Eisenhower is still a colonel] was to mobilize. Eisenhower proved adept at understanding this, and gradually - but not too gradually - bringing the forces to bear. He appreciated amphibious war, tank war, and air war. He came to appreciate all these over many years of basically boring assignments. He also was dedicated to the notion of an allied force, and ready to negotiate through fields of politic and diplomacy to make that work, while enforcing a system of single command in Europe. He worked well with George Marshal [his mentor and patron], Winston Churchill, Bernard Montgomery, George Patton, and Omar Bradley.
And all these things come through crystal clear in Crusade in Europe like a memo from one same man in a mad battlefield.
There is a style of work that culls general's writings, histories, and biographies to find wisdom of war that can be useful today for business leaders. Gee, I wonder why. Somehow, as far as I know, the great World War II leader Eisenhower has not been identified for this treatment. Which is kind of funny. Lee and Patton have been cited so, almost unto nausea. But neither of them have the traits of the modern organization man.
Eisenhower was asked to create a general line of action mere days after Pearl Harbor.
Not brazen was Ike. Looking at the charter to lead. "The question before me was unlimited in its implications and my qualifications for approaching it were probably those of the average hard-working Army officer of my age."
He'd gained over years of staff work an understanding of technology as applied to war making. "..I had been forced to examine world-wide military matters and to study concretely such subjects as the mobilization and composition of armies, the role of air forces and navies in war, tendencies toward mechanization, an the acute dependence of all elements of military life upon the industrial capacity of the nation. This last was to me of especial importance because of my intense belief that the large-scale motorization and mechanization and the development of air forces in unprecedented strength would characterize successful military forces of the future. ... I knew that any sane preparation for war involved also sound plans for the prompt mobilization of industry. The years devoted to work of this kind opened up to me an almost new world." P.19
This is where the story gets going. And he carries the narrative steadily until Hitler's final defeat.
Excellent book for those interested in WWII history and a great figure........2005-11-01
This book written by the great man himself was written in 1948 and covers Eisenhower's time from being assigned the invasion known as Operation Torch (the invasion of North Africa) to the liberation of Europe.
For those interested in WWII, this is a great book to read and compare with Winston Churchill's WWII history for a command eye view of WWII. Unlike the contemporary view of Ike as a man of lesser intelligence, on the contrary, this book was written without the assistance of ghost-writers. Simply said, this book is very enjoyable to read. Clearly, Ike was a man of great intelligence and ability. That fact ought to have been demonstrated with his management of the European War, and the fact that he leapfrogged many other notable staff officers in the pre-war period. Moreover, Ike commanded the greatest army and most complex coalition in history. Furthermore, interestingly, he was the President of Columbia University for two years before running for president! It is interesting how after all those accomplishments, he was labeled a dunce by the contemporary media.
At any rate, this book is full of great observations and interesting tidbits about the leaders who commanded the liberation army of Europe and Africa. This is more than a pure military history. For my taste, this book is more interesting because it discusses the problems of command, the logistics of war, and also, and more interestingly, the personalities behind some of the momentous events of the 20th Century.
An interesting read by one of the great figures of the 20th Century. The book is a model of writing and circumspection. Truly enjoyable, I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in how complex events are managed and thought of by those partaking in the event.
A Gem Of A Memoir.......2005-09-06
"Crusade In Europe" is General Eisenhower's memoir of the period from the early days of World War II, during which America waited for its involvement to begin, through the early post-war dealings with our erstwhile allies. As the premier figure among the Western Allies, his story and observations are crucial to an understanding of the Great Crusade.
Ike takes the reader along with him through each stage of the Crusade. We view events from a perspective which lets us see aspects which we otherwise might have missed. Having attracted attention for his performance in Army maneuvers in Louisiana in 1940, Ike was called to Washington immediately after Pearl Harbor because of his recent experience in the Philippines. He was immediately assigned to work on plans for the Pacific. At this point the reader is reminded that, in contrast to the later Germany First Policy, the American public, for a time, screamed for revenge on Japan before dealing with Germany.
Assigned to command Operation Torch, the invasion of French North Africa in 1942, Ike was charged with obtaining Allied Cooperation and was plunged into the morass of French politics. The disappointing involvement with Gen. Giraud presented an intra-allied problem, as did cooperation of Adm. Darlan, who while too helpful to rebuff, brought with him the stigma of association with a collaborator. The age-old Arab-Jewish hostility further complicated the administration of the liberated territory.
With North Africa cleared out, Ike was charged with the conquest of Sicily. Management of the Patton-Montgomery rivalry was a major challenge of the campaign. Success having been achieved, the Patton slapping incident forced Ike to reprimand a close friend while threatening to deprive him of one of his most effective Army commanders.
Speculation that Ike would return to the Washington as Chief Of Staff while Gen. Marshall commanded Overlord, the invasion of Europe, distracted Ike's attention from problems at hand. Ike's eventual appointment to command Overlord forced him to leave the Mediterranean while the Italian campaign was still in doubt. Upon arrival in England he immediately switched gears to plan the size, timing, supply and location of the invasion of France.
With the invasion ashore, Ike skillfully managed his coalition of impetuous commanders in their march across Europe. Ike brings the reader into the thought processes and conferences leading to decisions on the liberation of Paris, Operation Market-Garden ("A Bridge Too Far") and the Battle of The Bulge.
Americans are familiar with Patton's claim that, with supplies, he could capture Berlin and win the war. Ike relates that Monty bothered him with similarly impractical suggestions. He then explains why the proposals were doomed to failure. Spirited arguments with the British over Project Anvil (Invasion of Southern France) come within the reader's vision through Ike's eyes.
The greatest criticism of Ike's wartime leadership is reserved for questions about whether the Western Allies should have advanced further to limit the Red Army's area of occupation. Ike assesses the claims and presents support for his decisions.
After V-E Day, Ike's role shifted more into that of a statesman as he attempted to obtain cooperation with the Russians over the administration of occupied Germany.
Some things come clearly through the pages of this book. The reader is constantly impressed with the importance of supplies, bringing to mind the adage that "Amateurs speak of tactics, professionals speak of logistics." Despite later controversies, Ike's admiration for Gen. George Marshall is made clear on the pages of this book. Written in 1948, I find the statement that Ike disagreed with many of FDR's domestic policies to be surprising and a hint of his later political initiatives. "Crusade In Europe" is written in a very clear, easy to read and follow, style. It never becomes bogged down in boring details. Among memoirs, this is a gem.
