Geisler argues that the over-reliance on co-variation techniques and statistical methods, instead of process approach and in-depth analysis, produces meaningless knowledge in the managerial and organizational sciences, and indeed throughout all the social sciences. He offers instead a new and different approach, based on the notion of what he calls "dynamic morphologies"--an "architecture of slicing complex phenomena." This way it is possible to explain many inconsistencies in research findings, and to find a cohesive, systematic outlook on research, research design, and knowledge creation. Intellectually challenging and following in the footsteps of Kuhn, Argyris, and Popper, Geisler's approach is frankly revolutionary in research design and contains its own notions, terms, and nomenclature. A provocative discussion for academics and others well trained in the organizational, managerial, and social sciences. Geisler's dynamic morphologies provide a means to research complex phenomena and gain knowledge about them. They are composed of a chain of events, combined logically and temporally, and a method by which this process is studied. Geisler also contends that knowledge in the organizational and managerial sciences is only viable when it describes and explains the complex, higher-order phenomena. Therefore, theory building and research in these fields must be linked to higher-order constructs and the phenomena that they attempt to explain. This is the central notion of "amplitude" that Geisler introduces and describes. His book also criticizes the evolutionary epistemology view of knowledge creation and contends that knowledge in all of these fields of study in general is not evolutionary, but instead, cumulative and expansive.

The Transformation of Wall Street offers an in-depth look at the history of the SEC's origins, accomplishments, and failings since its creation in 1934. Each chapter in the book takes historical look at the tenure of the various SEC chairmen. The first edition, published in 1977, covered the SEC through the Nixon-Ford presidential administration. A revised edition was published in 1995, updating the book through 1992. Now, the third edition continues the history until 2001, the end of Arthur Levitt's Chairmanship, with a treatment of auditing issues through the enactment of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (July 2002). In this revised edition, author Joel Seligman draws on unpublished SEC files and extensive personal interviews to provide a comprehensive examination of the origins, accomplishments, and failings of the SEC and its leaders, from the creation of the SEC in 1934 to the present The new material, among other things, will address: • The Private Securities Litigation Reform Act, which has had a significant impact on private securities litigation after its passage in 1995; • The structure of the securities markets (which are in an important transition because of Electronic Communications Networks; decimalization; international competition; and the continuing evolution to greater institutionalization of our markets as well as the growth of several new products, most recently security futures products); • Municipal securities markets (which were largely ignored before the recently resigned Arthur Levitt); • Several issues with respect to the accounting profession (most notably auditor independence and the independence of accounting standard-setting boards). In addition, the work will focus on Chairman Levitt, whom the author believes was one of the most accomplished of the post World War II chairs, and had the challenge of being a Chair appointed by a Democratic party president during a period when Republicans controlled both houses of Congress as well as a period of extraordinary ferment in the securities market.

This book offers a rare perspective into the work of corporate finance and capital markets through the eyes of one of the most respected and prominent members. His unique involvement with Louis Loss and the history, theories and legislation and regulations of this complex area offers the reader great insight.

In this original investment book, the author provides a blend of topics combining the tools taught in finance classes with the practical experience of someone with three decades of investment success. The author covers several topics including the arithmetic of stock valuation and how to use same to develop rational expectations. Accounting issues are addressed since financial statements are not always what they seem. Financial history is presented since it consistently repeats itself and those who have some knowledge have a marked advantage. The author then devotes several chapters on what to look for when pulling together the story behind various investment choices and how to link disparate information to successfully find stocks that appreciate. To help in this process, the book spends time covering economics in ways that normal people can understand and provides useful analytical models for the average investor. The book concludes with emphasis on technical analysis, pointing out that it is based on solid micro-economic principles that allow one to cut through the information clutter to discern what is really going on before researching individual stocks.
Altogether this is an interesting and different book on the subject that can greatly improve performance for most investors.

This is a rigorous exegetical work by a heavy-weight thinker. Heavily influenced by Geerhardus Vos and Herman Ridderbos, Gaffin sees Paul's main concern the historia salutis rather than the ordo salutis which became standard in subsequent Protestant thought.

As a young girl, Rebecca struggled with a severe behavior problem. Her mother continuously sought the help of mental health professionals. When all else had failed, Rebecca's parents placed her in a program designed primarily for alcohol and drug rehabilitation, but which claimed it could cure her out-of-control behavior. The controversial treatment program was supposedly supervised by a psychiatrist, but in the 6 years Rebecca was there she never received an adequate psychiatric assessment. Only after leaving was Rebecca able to begin putting her shattered life together. Finally, correctly diagnosed, she began receiving psychotherapy and medication. Rebecca sued the treatment program for medical malpractice and won a major settlement in 1999. Today, while still requiring ongoing treatment, Rebecca lives on her own in relative peace. The story of Rebecca's battle to get well is told by her mother, Harryet, who refused to give up, and by Dr. Lewis Opler, who never stopped believing that with the right treatment Rebecca would recover.

This book will be among the decades' great narratives of a family's struggle with mental illness. It documents the worst forms of fraud and abuse committed to most vulnerable, as well as the highest forms of compassionate, scientific, and rationale approaches to healing. The book further dispells the myth that bipolar disorder is untreatable, demonstrating that while a cure is not yet available, help and progress are well within reach. Both the co-authors have been changed by their experiences, as will the reader. (...)

Understanding and conquering mental ilness.......2003-10-22

"Ressurection and Redemption" captures the delima of coping with mental health issues in todays society. Dr.Opelar sets the tone in the first chapter when he states that we as a people are still in the dark ages with our attitudes towards mental heath problems. This book opens the doors to the real suffering on a day to day basis by the person with the mental disability and thier family. Like "The Burning Bed" by Francine Hughes who took domestic violience out of the closet and enlightened us forever, "Redemption" exposes the myths associated with the mentally ill, gives us a first hand glance at the patients suffering from their own point of view,and shows in an intimate, candid way of the Ehrlich's valient effort to navagagate the fractued mental health system that exists today. We see through Rebecca's eyes the cruel blow that nature inflicted upon her and her brave struggle for release from the bondage of a misunderstood disorder of one part of her body, her mind. We find we are not alone when dealing with this problem. There was a time in the not to not too distant past when physical disabilities were scorned upon by society. Hopefully, with time and enlightenment we will soon look upon mental illness as just another chronic desease, not a dark and foreboding secret.
