It's all about first use........2007-08-20
The book helped me learn several key things about marks [names]. (1) Be the very first one to use your mark. If you don't know that you are the first one then the book will help you get started with your research. If you aren't the first one to use your mark then someone else may have superior rights and sue the heck out of you. Federal or State registration is fairly important to protect your mark but is secondary in the big scheme of things because it's all about first use. (2) Fighting somebody who is using your mark that has a lot more money than you is probably a losing deal in the long run. (3) You don't need a lawyer to register your mark. (4) If your mark has the look of or sounds a lot like another person's mark you may be in big trouble.
The book is more about how to find and keep a valid mark than about "legal care for your business and product name." The book is very helpful about the Federal registration process, especially about the proper use of disclaimers. The book falls a little short in exactly how to register your mark internationally, before or after registering in the U.S.
Good reference book for the rest of us........2007-01-12
Nolo Press once again did not disappoint me. I was looking for basic information about the Trademark process and they provided a description in "plain-English" that walked me through the process, defined terms, even offered some advice on how to handle disputes.

Good Introduction for the Non-Professional.......2005-11-10
This book is an excellent introduction to the concepts of trademarks. It's in its seventh edition, so it's been around long enough to get errors worked out and up to date enough to reflect the latest legal changes.
This book is a good introduction to trademark law. It seems to fit into two categories. If you're working for a big company (or a company that wants to grow big) use this for its information value and then go get professional trademark help from a specialist attorney.
If you're a little company like me, this is probably all that you need. For a dozen years I've owned the domain name [...]. I got a nasty letter from the attorney for Doubleday Book Clubs saying that I was infringing on their domain name of [...] and that they wanted me to stop. I wrote back to them and said that I wasn't infringing because I didn't run a book club, my pages didn't look at all like theirs, etc. I never heard from them again.
Mr. Elias, if you happen to read this, in your next edition, I'd like to see you expand Chapter 2 on domain names. They haven't replaced trademarks, but are becomming more and more important.
A VERY HANDY REFRENCE AND OVERVIEW A GOOD STARTING POINT........2005-10-16
To my knowledge, the best, simple, handy reference for Trademark available.
It's very useful in planning and getting an overview.
I give the book a 4 because anyone who can take the complexities and vagaries of legalese and make a useful book deserves it. I can not give them a 5 because they did not (and to be fair perhaps could not) address more of the vagaries of conflicting use and claims of trademark - perhaps that is another book.
Very good overall, you won't be dissatisfied especially if used in conjunction with further state and web research.
Very useful background information for laymen.......2003-12-25
This is a great resource for marketing professionals, entrepreneurs, and non-trademark attorneys to understand the basics of trademark law. However, this book is no substitute for professional legal advice from an experienced trademark attorney when it comes to protection a property that is becoming scarce and more valuable as business migrates into the online world.

A comprehensive look at Grameen Bank.......2007-07-09
No two people hold a more appropriate position to write about Grameen Bank than Asif Dowla and Dipal Barua. As former students of 2006 Nobel Peace Prize Winner and Grameen Bank founder Muhammad Yunus, Dowla and Barua have been apprised of the logic behind small loans since the Bank's inception. They have Yunus's trust and approval when it comes to sharing Grameen with the world, which readers can see in his found appraisal of Dowla and Barua in the preface.
"The Poor Always Pay Back: The Grameen II story" is a comprehensive account of the overhaul of the world's premier micro credit institution and it is suitable for novice students of economics, masters of the field, and everyone in between who may be curious about microcredit. The central tenet of the text is that the poor are bankable--despite the fact that they lack liquid capital, they can be trusted to repay loans and to use money in an enterprising fashion if given a fair opportunity and clear terms.
The book begins with a review of Classical Grameen and its effects on the poor in Bangladesh, focusing on the Bank's structure and clearly explaining the terms of micro loans (such as the "Sixteen Decisions" which are both described and illustrated). However, the majority of this work, as its title suggests, is devoted to explication and analysis of the advanced terms and products of Grameen II. Claims and conclusions are well supported with both quantitative and qualitative evidence, to which the two authors have prime access through their ties to the Bank, granting a great deal of authority to the book. Tables and appendices are nicely tied in with the text, and citations allow readers to conduct their own research on individual aspects of Grameen and microcredit if they so desire.
"The Poor Always Pay Back: The Grameen II story" is a good way to begin study of the growing institution of microcredit and the assumption that there is financial potential among the poorest of the poor.

Not as extensive as I thought it'd be..........2006-12-13
This book includes a short history of the chile pepper, 4 pages of color photos, and about 180 recipes. It doesn't include much about growing peppers or explain their basic uses (other than as part of recipes). While it includes a few pages of color photos, all other photos in the book are black and white.
The history of the pepper, while sometimes interesting, wasn't as inclusive as I thought it would be. Basically, it explains how the pepper moved from area to area and how the local people grew it and used it in their cooking. According to the authors, the American chili pepper is the ancestor of the spicy dishes from Thailand, China, and elsewhere.

That's a great book! Full of information on every aspect of the 'Burning Way' of peppers. A lot about planting & growing them, a lot of recipes... Cultural history and diffusion all over the world is also great! Only one thing: a full list of peppers and how to recognize them is missing... only the most important varieties are described!
Not as comprehensive as I would have liked............2004-07-04
Basically, THE WHOLE CHILE PEPPER BOOK, by DeWitt and Gerlach includes a history of the chile (how it left the New World and conquered the Old World) four colorful pages of photos of various chile peppers, and lots and lots of exotic recipes. I bought this book thinking it would include much more detail on raising peppers in the garden than Rosilind Creasy's book THE EDIBLE PEPPER GARDEN, but for my purposes it is not as useful. I don't really need more recipes, I need a book that shows me photos of various peppers and explains their basic uses.
I fould the book more or less interesting - a narrative that explains how the pepper moved from area to area and how the locals in varous areas incorporated the new vegetable into their native cuisines, often developing pepper children who differed from their American ancestor. For example, while Africa had an affair with Paprika, Southeast Asia incorporated peppers into everything from curry to sate. So, according to DeWitt and Gerlach, the American pepper is the ancestor of those hot foreign dishes you eat in Thai, Chinese, and other ethnic restaurants.
I am puzzled as to why anyone would publish a book about something as colorful as the pepper and include so few color photos, however, the book includes many black and white photos and illustrations, along with plenty of text. If you like reading about peppers, this is the book for you.
A wealth of pepper information and recipes.......2002-04-10
This book has everything for the pepper-lover. Not only some tasty and unique recipes, but also history, interesting pepper facts, and information about cultures throughout the world that enjoy peppers. Plus, many of the recipes are not blazing-hot. Even includes recipes from Africa and Asia for a change of pace. The "Field Guide to Chiles" (with some color photos) is also very interesting. Think of this as the Food Network meets the Discovery Channel.

while some of the trades don't work now, this book is still good.
Typical trade: buy june live cattle, and sell oct live cattle when this position moves positive 2 days in a row from jan 15th to feb 15th. Hold until may 1st. Exit if your entry point is threatenned after 2 negative days, or if you are ahead by the amount of original margin.
Good job explaing bull and bear speads, and basics of commodities. Good for novice and experienced traders.
If you want to trade futures, buy this book.......1999-02-02
I first balked at the high price of this book. It didn't matter that it was written by professional futures trader, George Angell. I bought it and studied the different spread trades that he dedicates a chapter each to. This book will be useful for years to come from taking these trades. The price is well worth it in just one or two contract spreads.

Go ahead and make the first biggest investment (in terms of value) you can ever make for your children - by buying and reading this book!
Mike Powers uses strong and straightforward language, which urge parents to think, with words like, "What we are buying for our children is the ability to get good job and make more money over the course of their lifetime, without it, they are headed for 50 years of wearing funny little paper hats and endlessly repeating "would you like fries with that?" We know this and we'll pay whatever it costs to help them avoid it."
He explains why the colleges are so costly, where and why the colleges spend so much and how much it will cost in the next years to come. He suggests which colleges suit your child and what fits in our pocket. He has divided the book in to parts, investment and aid; I think all the possibilities are covered.
However, if you are already into investment, what you will find on "your contribution" section will appear basic. Also, if your child is about to go to the college in a few years time, the "other resources" section will look rudimentary. Unfortunately, Mike Powers does not reveal any specific strategy or scheme, which an individual can follow.
Not withstanding this, if you are interested in the welfare of your children, reading this book will definitely change your mindset, and help you start investing for the bright future. Particularly, parents who have small children will be highly benefited by reading this book.

World War II and its aftermath brought devastating material losses to millions of West Germans. Military action destroyed homes, businesses, and personal possessions; East European governments expelled 15 million ethnic Germans from their ancestral homes; and currency reform virtually wiped out many Germans' hard-earned savings. These "war damaged" individuals, well over one-third of the West German population, vehemently demanded compensation at the expense of those who had not suffered losses, to be financed through capital levies on surviving private property.
Michael Hughes offers the first comprehensive study of West Germany's efforts to redistribute the costs of war and defeat among its citizenry. The debate over a Lastenausgleich (a balancing out of burdens) generated thousands of documents in which West Germans articulated deeply held beliefs about social justice, economic rationality, and political legitimacy. Hughes uses these sources to trace important changes in German society since 1918, illuminating the process by which West Germans, who had rejected liberal democracy in favor of Nazi dictatorship in the 1930s, came to accept the social-market economy and parliamentary democracy of the 1950s.

I had the distinct pleasure of doing some informal editing on this book and with this author. I was fascinated by the facts of electroshock therapy as told by a former patient. And I was charmed by the author's down-to-earth, conversational style of writing. Working on this book made me appreciate the luxury of my own mental health, and how dramatically a careless diagnosis can change it. I recommended After Shock to my book club, and it was enthusiastically given thumbs up. After you read this book, the whispered stories you hear at family reunions about Aunt Mary (who is "a little odd") will never have quite the same meaning!

This is the story of an adolescent girl's survival following electric shock treatments to enforce compliance. In a stark narrative, the girl recounts dysfunctional family dominance that forces her to escape further brain damage, death or suicide. The story moves through her experiences as a child in an adult psychiatric hospital where the patient/staff differences are often blurred. When "disowned and disinherited" by her dysfunctional family, she moves into adulthood, assumes a new identity, acquires and then loses a surrogate family through cancer, and becomes a psychiatric professional nurse, and ultimately achieves a Ph.D. in psychotherapy. Her professional life involved patient care, psychiatric training for psychiatrists and nurses, psychoanalysis, and sexual abuse by her own therapist. But there was always a need to cover up her early history and the daunting implications of possible brain damage from her early electric shock. She married a gentle physician, and with her own motherhood, found it imperative to go back to the memories and losses for a reconciliation with her past through successful treatment. The story is poignant, often funny, often gritty, and always compelling.

This book really pulls at your heart strings!
Very sensative, and gives you food for thought. It provides a look inside the home of a child whom is going through the healing process of abuse and how the childs abuse touches the ones closest to them. Much has been written about child abuse, but this is a different approach,very informative and enlightening. This book will provide a support network for family and caregivers,something they can refer to, if they are taking care of a child that has been abused.
