Book Description
One of the central issues of analytic philosophy and especially the theory of language is the concept of logical form. As typically understood this concept covers investigations into universal logical features underlying languages. However, from Frege and Russell onwards logical form analysts were no longer confined to such narrow linguistic perspectives. For them, investigating the logical form of language took the wider philosophical perspective of trying to understand language as our principal means for representing the world. From Russell's theory of definite descriptions to Davidson's truth-theoretical analyses of adverbial modification, citation, and reported speech, to lay open the logical structures underlying language is seen as a way of revealing the structure and features of the thereby represented world. Seventeen specially written essays by eminent philosophers and linguists appear for the first time in this anthology. Logical Form and Language brings together exciting new contributions from diverse points of view, which illuminate the lively current debate about this topic.

Book Description
This study focuses on the relation of syntactic and semantic structure. It investigates the notion that within generative grammar there is a level of linguistic representation Logical Form. Its main assumption is that this is a level of phrase structure representation, derived by transformational operations from S-structure, and over which formal semantic interpretations are defined.
The book explores Logical Form by focusing primarily on quantificational phenomena and on how their explicit syntactic representation interacts with various syntactic and semantic properties. Among the topics discussed are the interactions of wh and quantified phrases, bound variable anaphora, branching quantifiers, extraposition and multiple interrogation.
Logical Form contains several technical innovations: the notion that LF-movement closely approximates "Move α," a new approach to characterizing quantifier scope, which makes central use of the notion of "government," a novel interpretation of the relation of syntactic nodes and categorical projections, and an application of path theory to the syntactic structure of Logical Form.
Robert May is Assistant Professor of Linguistics, Barnard College, Columbia University. Logical Form is Linguistic Inquiry Monograph 12.

Description:
This experimental study is a proof-of-concept of a theory of meaning first put forward by Bar-Hillel and Carnap in 1953 and foreshadowed by Asimov in 1951. The theory is the Popperian-like notion that the meaningfulness of a proposition is its a priori falsity. We tested this theory by translating to logical form a long, tightly written, published text and computed the meaningfulness of each proposition using the a priori falsity measure. We then selected the top propositions - by a priori falsity - and strung them together to form ad hoc abstracts and compared these abstracts with the published summary. The results are startling: Translation to logical form followed by application of the Asimov/Bar-Hillel/Carnap idea produces excellent abstracts, thereby providing a proof-of-concept that merely by knowing the logical form of large text passages, one can produce reasonable abstracts of it-without actually understanding the text. In other words, were the results of this experiment to generalize, that would show that logical form captures much more semantics than has heretofore been considered likely. Far from being merely the syntactical rewrite of text into formal notation commonly supposed, logical form, even without knowing almost anything about the particular predicates, individual constants, or other objects referred to in that form, might capture the core of the meaning in some important sense, still to be fully formalized into a comprehensive theory.

Description:
This experimental study provides further support for a theory of meaning first put forward by Bar-Hillel and Carnap in 1953 and foreshadowed by Asimov in 1951. The theory is the Popperian notion that the meaningfulness of a proposition is its a priori falsity. We tested this theory (Fulda, 2006) by translating to logical form a long, tightly written, published text and computed the meaningfulness of each proposition using the a priori falsity measure. We then selected the top propositions-by a priori falsity-and strung them together to form ad hoc abstracts and compared these abstracts with the published summary. The results were startling: translation to logical form, followed by application of the Asimovian idea and Bar-Hillel/Carnap mathematics as elaborated into an AI/NLP proposal in Fulda (1986, 1988), produced excellent abstracts, thereby providing a proof-of-concept that merely by knowing the logical form of long text passages, one can produce reasonable abstracts of them-without actually understanding the text. We here report on a second experiment analyzing, in the exact same manner, the correspondence that followed the published text of the first experiment. While the results of this confirming experiment are less startling, they nevertheless provide additional confidence in the promise of the technique. In other words, were the results of these two experiments to generalize, that would show that logical form captures much more semantics than has heretofore been considered likely. Far from (as is commonly supposed) being merely the syntactical rewrite of text into formal notation, translation to logical form, even when undertaken with almost no knowledge about the particular predicates, individual constants, or other objects referred to in that form, might capture the core of the meaning in some important sense.

Book Description
Directionality and Logical Form provides a detailed treatment of the syntax of focusing particles, such as
only and
even in a cross-linguistic perspective. The derivation of logical forms is shown to be under the control, not only of the ECP and subjacency, but also of directionality of government and the particular word-order parameter that holds in a given language: head-final languages systematically disallow certain derivations or readings that are available in head-initial languages. The reason is that heads that deviate in their selection properties from canonical head-finality project a directionality barrier. Various strategies are explored by which this barrier can be circumvented. Although the theory is developed mainly on the basis of the head position in German, it can be directly used to explain constraints on the scope of Wh-in-situ in Bengali and closely related languages.
Audience: Syntacticians and semanticists interested in parametric variation, as well as linguists working on Germanic and/or Indo-Aryan languages.
Book Description
Lexico-Logical Form relates in aim to Noam Chomsky's recent works on economy and minimalism: both authors recast the structure of the grammar, revealing its essential properties in the process. In Lexico- Logical Form, Michael Brody meticulously dissects aspects of the Principles and Parameters theory, pares away the extraneous, focuses on core issues, and recreates them in subtle and interesting ways.
Brody argues for and discusses aspects of a radically minimalist, nonderivational approach to syntax in which both the central conceptual systems and the lexicon have direct access to the single syntactic representation, called Lexico-Logical Form. He proposes to streamline the syntactic component of the grammar by eliminating syntactic derivation and all syntactic levels of representation other than LF, the interface with the semantic component.
A central driving force throughout is the elimination of redundancy in the theory. Since movement characterizes a subset of the relations characterized by chains, the former is eliminated. Since the lexicon must constrain the input to the semantic component, intervening representations are eliminated, and the relationship beween the lexicon and LF becomes direct. This timely approach explores a logical next step in the minimalist path.

Book Description
In this book, a well-known and highly respected philosopher details the complicated anatomy of linguistic meaning, showing how its elements fit together; he explores the interface between "languages" considered as formal systems and the linguistic activities of human beings in speech situations; and he defends the autonomy of linguistic semantics as a branch of scientific psychology.
The book's first Part sets out and defends the truth-theoretic method in semantics, arguing that the notion of a sentence's truth-condition lies at the core of meaning.
Part Two considers a number of apparent differences between formal and natural languages, having chiefly to do with the context-bound features of natural-language semantics, and attempts to reconcile them. It provides a definite focus to the semantics/pragmatics distinction, and argues that few if any of the pragmatic phenomena investigated by linguists will need to be represented in semantic theory. The author offers plausible and in some cases novel solutions to the technical problems that have plagued the semantics/pragmatics border.
Part Three portrays the role of semantics in psychology and the relation of semantics to human speakers' internal functional organization. Further, the author shows how a sentence's truth-condition meshes with each of the other aspects of its meaning, and argues that traditional theories of meaning which have focused on some of these other aspects should be regarded as mutually complementary components of linguistic theory rather than being treated as rival accounts of a common subject-matter.
William G. Lycan is Professor of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. A Bradford Book.

Book Description
This book critically reviews grammatical research into logical form over the past 20 years and reconsiders some of its major themes in the light of recent theoretical innovations. In the late 1970s generative grammarians proposed the existence of an abstract syntactic level of grammatical representation derived from surface structure which was phonetically invisible. This level, dubbed logical form, has been thought of as the information that the grammar contributes to semantic interpretation.

Description:
I consider the way Wittgenstein employed some kinds of sound recordings (but not others) in discussing logical form in the Tractatus logico-philosophicus. The year that Ludwig Wittgenstein was born in Vienna, 1889, nearby developments already underway portended two major changes of the coming century: the advent of controlled heavier than air flight and the mass production of musical sound recordings. Before they brought about major social changes, though, these innovations appeared in Europe in the form of children's toys. Wittgenstein uses the fact that a symphony performance can be constructed from both a written musical score and the grooves of a gramophone record to explain what logical form is. His characterization of logical form in the Tractatus in terms of intertranslatability rather than in terms of interpretability is highlighted by reflecting on the kinds of examples of sound recordings that he did not use to illustrate the notion of logical form. There were other well known technologies for making visual records of sound at the time, but these did not serve to illustrate logical form.

Great book.......2007-02-07
I got this book for my daughter for Christmas, as she's begun to live on her own and is beginning to show an interest in cooking. My wife saw the book and liked it so much she kept it for herself until she could try some of the recipes, before letting my daughter take it home.
Useful cookbook with delicious, easy recipes!.......2004-05-27
I was given this cookbook as a gift, and I love it. I've made 5 of the lasagnas so far: 4 were fantastic and relatively easy to make. I will definitely make those 4 again. And there are at least 6 other recipes that I really want to try.
Overall: lots of recipes that look interesting, high ratio of "successful" recipes in practice . . . that's what makes a great cookbook!
Easy-to-make dishes filled with homestyle memories.......2003-12-08

Good...so far....but stolen!.......2002-01-02
Briefly, I read two chapters...took the book into a MacDonalds...and read while waiting to order my take-out! Put the book down while getting catup and walk-out without the book! Drove 35 miles and was so determined to get the book bac that I drove the 35 miles or so back! When I arrived at MacDonalds...the book was gone...no one saw it! So, someone is enjoying the books or so I hope so...and my notes ought to help them, too. And what will I do? I will purchase the book again!
Why? Because what I read sounded like good advice.
Recommended.......2000-05-18
I found the information in this book straightforward and helpful for novice investors. The book covers the basics of investing (investment types, diversification, indexing, the beauty of compound interest, etc.) and makes a handy guide for investors.
Highly recommended.......1999-10-02
Very informative, and filled with humor to boast. I enjoyed reading this book from end to end.
too flippant, no real advice.......1999-10-01
The author's flippancy sounds like arrogance after a while. He has no useful advice other than to invest in index funds. I ordered this book on the recommendation of a review on Amazon.com. My recommendation is don't order it yourself. A much better book also available at Amazon.com is the Baby Boomer Financial Wake Up Call, by Kay Shirley.
If you don't understand your stock investments, read this!.......1999-09-21
Mr. Updegrave's book, Investing for the Financially Challenged, is a comprehensive, interesting, informative and sometimes funny book a stock market novice will love. I plan to read it several times and order several more copies as Christmas presents for my sons.

Book Description
Major League Baseball, alone among industries of its size in the United States, operates as an unregulated monopoly. This 20th-century regulatory anomaly has become known as the "baseball anomaly." Major League Baseball developed into a major commercial enterprise without being subject to antitrust liability. Long after the interstate commercial character of baseball had been established and even recognized by the Supreme Court, baseball's monopoly remained free from federal regulation. Duquette explains the baseball anomaly by connecting baseball's regulatory status to the larger political environment, tracing the game's fate through four different regulatory regimes. The constellation of institutional, ideological, and political factors within each regulatory regime provides the context for the survival of the baseball anomaly. Duquette shows baseball's unregulated monopoly persists because of the confluence of institutional, ideological, and political factors which have prevented the repeal of baseball's antitrust exemption to date. However, both the institutional and ideological factors are fading fast. Baseball's owners can no longer claim special cultural significance in defense of their exemption. Nor can they credibly claim that the commissioner system approximates government regulation effectively. Both of these strategies have been discredited by the labor unrest of the 1980s and 1990s. Duquette provides a unique perspective on American regulatory politics, and by explaining a complicated story in comprehensive prose, he has given researchers, policy makers, and fans a fascinating look at the business of baseball.

Book Description
Environmental economists pay little or no attention to the political context within which green taxation would be introduced. In order to understand the real-life politics of green taxation, Carsten Daugbjerg and Gert Tinggaard Svendsen identify three main political constraints: the micro-level approach of rent seeking; the macro-level approach of party politics; and the meso-level approach of policy networks. Based on these findings the authors develop policy recommendations concerning the future design of green taxation and international permit trading.

Light Yet Meaningful.......2006-09-11
I read this book a few days after my doctor told me he was "very concerned" I may have a very rare and aggressive form of cancer. I found the easy style of the book was something I definitely needed while my mind was racing in a million directions. I loved that I could identify with the author on silly things like what to wear to my next doctor's appointment. The lightness yet meaningful style of the book helps in a time when so much is going on around you.
