Golder is an excellent writer. He is easy to follow and takes a practical approach to common situations.

I thoroughly enjoyed part #4. It covers half the book (85 pages) and is called "horror stories". In that section, he writes about many of his real life experiences.

I read Golder's book while in the midst of a long period of conflict with my employer. Uncivil Rights opened my eyes. Golder provides the reader with a clear understanding of an employee's rights. This new understanding allowed me to formulate a strategy which led to an amicable and equitable agreement. Thank you, Professor Golder.

Incredible book - interesting, informative, essential.......1999-10-26

Golder's experiences serve as important lessons to all in this book which can help out anyone having problems at work. I was involved in a wrongful termination suit years ago and would have benefited greatly if I had read this book. For anyone who is having problems at work and needs to know their rights, this is the book. Also, the stories Golder uses were very interesting.

I was given this book back in the 70's and it has been used hard since. People ask how I learned to bake and I tell them to follow the recipe. I've never had one fail from this book. The basic recipes allow for a great many variations without getting complicated.

This book is truly timeless. . . . .

My mother had this book while I was growing up (I'm 48, it is 2003 as I write this) and it was the most used cook book, or maybe, book of any kind, in my conservative-Jewish home.

I bought this book when I got married, and my wife and I have used it and worn it out over 26 years of marriage. It is the most used cook book in my orthodox-Jewish home.

My daughter got married last August. At my wife's suggestion, I am buying two more - one for my daughter, who lives in Israel, and one for my son for whenever he gets amrried (We'll keep it sealed so it stays new until then.)

The best cookbook I own.......2002-12-13

I have many cookbooks, but this is the one I always return to. I've been using it for almost 3 decades, and hope to use it for many more.
It's not a kitchy book, nor is it filled with complicated recipes.
This cookbook has the pure basics of cooking kosher food, and even when I feel like experimenting and making up a recipe, I often refer to it to see cooking times for certain items, like meat, rice, etc.as well as suggestions for what spices go well with what
foods.
It has loads of recipes, several for each type of food and is good for the beginner and also for the more experienced cook. I've been looking for this book for a while, and plan to order one for both my daughter and new daughter in law. I highly recommend it!

Some dated recipes, but a great reference book.......2002-09-04

"The Complete American Jewish Cookbook" includes a mix of traditional Ashkenazic dishes and mid-20th-century American comfort food. There are many cookbooks that will provide updated versions of traditional foods and kosher versions of contemporary favorites. But how many of them also serve as good, basic references, covering everything from applesauce (multiple versions) to zucchini? My personal favorites include banana bread and baked macaroni and cheese. The Passover section is invaluable, and the chicken soup is sheer perfection!

My Favorite Cookbook!.......2001-11-02

My friend's Mom gave me her book that she got in 1950. Even with the front cover missing I return to this book time and time again. I love the thousands of recipes to choose from. The best part is rarely is there a recipe that has more than 6-10 ingredients. Easy to read - simple to follow - great pictures. I've purchased a used hard cover version that I saving for my daughter. This cookbook brings the memory of my mother and grandmother back to life!

Best Cookbook I've Ever Used.......2001-08-31

I have approximately 20 cookbooks on my shelf, but when push comes to shove, this is my best source for almost anything I am looking for. I have been using it for 40 years, and am now looking to buy a "new" one, having gone through 2 already...as I said, I really use this book!

Absolutely cannot do without it!.......2001-08-27

I have had this book for about 48 years, in fact the original one has pages falling out. I had to buy another (with soft cover) about 15 years ago because the first one is very fragile. I bought this book for my daughter when she got married in 1980 and also for my youngest daughter when she married in 1983. Now my grandaughter, age 18, is starting college and wants the book, too. I understand it is out of print, and in that case, I will have to give her the soft cover one. This book is a basic cookbook which covers every situation, and it is especially good for new cooks because it explains very well. You don't even have to be kosher to use it, but it doesn't hurt. New jewish cookbooks come and go, but this is the one you really need and is a keeper!

One of the All-Time Classic Jewish Cookbooks.......2006-05-08

Remember when cookbooks used to be about giving you a lot of interesting ways to make delicious food? I don't know about you, but too many cookbooks these days are about "boutique" cooking, with glossy pages and strategically sprinkled caraway seeds and artistic squirts of wasabi-lime sauce.

But not this gem.

This is a cookbook that encourages you to make new things, regardless of your budget/access to gourmet specialty shops/ Julia Child-like ability. This is an everywoman's cookbook, and is best suited for "real people", yet gives experienced and creative cooks the inspiration to shine. The only complaint: my paperback edition is tattered and broken into 4 pieces! I'm going to buy the hardback edition when this one finally disintegrates into dust.

If you take only one of the many techniques explained in this book, you will profit. For example "Net Change Oscillators":

Simple averages are the sum of a number of values divided by the number. As we move along the time line, the oldest value is dropped off and the latest value is added on. The change in the average is the difference between the latest and the oldest (i.e. the net change) divided by the number. The change in the average is called the velocity of price change; therefore, the net change is a measure of that velocity.

When the net change is plotted along a time line, it oscillates across a zero line. This is called the net-change oscillator (NCO). Now let me describe a phenomenon that has given correct signals nine times out of ten in the course of many years of trading commodities, bank bills, indexes, and currencies.

The method is dead-simple: in an uptrend, you draw a guideline across the bottom tips of NCO, in a downtrend the guideline is drawn across the top tips. When the NCO penetrates the guideline, a trend change is imminent[...]

180 pages of more techniques than you could possibly use. The formulas are well explained, the strategies (series of 7, magic number of three, moving averages, exponential moving averages, stochastics, csi, rsi, regression analysis, etc) are also well explained. As somone who has searched for the ultimate formula, oscillator, technique or what ever for trading commodities, after reading this book, I've concluded that you can find a chart or group of charts to justify ANY idea. Given any market, depending on which combination of indicators one chooses, one could justify any decision. Now what good is that?

Soon after the assassination of President Lincoln in April 1865, newspaper editor Josiah Gilbert Holland traveled to Illinois to talk with people who had known Abraham Lincoln “back when.” In 1866 Holland published the earliest full-scale life of the fallen leader.

A great popular success, Holland’s biography introduced American readers who were hungry for personal information about Lincoln’s early life to some of the most famous and enduring Lincoln stories. From Holland the reader learned about Lincoln making restitution for a ruined book, the railsplitter earning his first silver dollar, the millhorse’s kick to his head, the wrestling match with Jack Armstrong. Holland relayed homey stories about the young Illinois legislator and lawyer and poignant ones about the president during the dark days of the Civil War.

Holland was one of the earliest biographers of Lincoln to insist that Lincoln had always opposed slavery and had planned consistently for emancipation. Most debatable, from the viewpoint of some later historians, Holland demonstrated that Lincoln was “eminently a Christian President.” To understand the sixteenth president and the making of his public image, it is necessary to begin with Holland’s Life of Abraham Lincoln.

Enjoyed by readers during Lincoln's era.......2007-09-13

This is probably the best early biography of Lincoln, produced by someone who collected information from persons who knew Lincoln before and during the White House years. The book was produced before the President was surrounded by a godlike aura, and presents the man as Americans of his time wanted to remember him. His last law partner William H. Herndon found the portrayal too pretty, but it pleased the reading public.

Lincolnia in the Making.......2003-05-31

In 1866 Abraham Lincoln was far from the icon of American leadership and democracy that he later became, but he was already in the process of becoming. That was in no small measure because of the work of Josiah Gilbert Holland (1819-1881), whose "Life of Abraham Lincoln" was the first full-scale post-assassination biography of Lincoln and a pathmarker that fundamentally shaped the contours of Lincolnia. Published less than a year after Lincoln?s death, Holland told the now well-worn stories of young Lincoln earning his first silver dollar as a rail-splitter, about his repayment for a ruined book, about the millhorse?s kick to his head, about his wrestling match with Jack Armstrong, and about the fabled Lincoln sense of humor and wit. Always, Holland wrote in an accessible, homey manner about Lincoln the man and the patriot, about Lincoln the husband and father, and about Lincoln the moral leader of a nation at war.

For example, Holland asserted repeatedly in this biography that Lincoln had been an opponent of slavery his entire life and had always planned for emancipation. A debatable contention at best, but one that certainly hearkened back to the moral vision expressed in the Declaration of Independence penned nearly a century earlier. The assertion certainly fixed the image of the man as a champion of the highest ideals of the republic. Also debatable, and certainly it was roundly attacked at the time by several of Lincoln?s associates, was Holland?s assertion that Lincoln was the very model of a Christian leader. Such longtime associates as William Herndon condemned Holland?s declaration of Lincoln?s religious ideals as bogus.

Holland based his biography on relatively extensive interviews with those who knew Lincoln and on the written materials then readily available. Accordingly, there is a depth of coverage not present in many of the other early Lincoln biographies. At the same time, Holland was essentially Lincoln?s Parson Weems, making a myth of the fallen leader second to only that accorded George Washington. As Allen C. Guelzo notes in an excellent introduction to the volume, Holland engaged in oversentimentality, drawing overt morals from the life and career of Lincoln. Holland?s Lincoln, as Guelzo states, ?was unapologetically the champion of ?strength and moderation? and the opposition, whether from John Charles Fr?mont or Clement Vallandigham, was ?irresponsible? or ?treasonable?? (pp. viii-ix). Because of these weaknesses, most modern Lincoln scholars have dismissed Holland?s biography without serious consideration.

As a study in the process of myth-making, however, this book is important. Its availability in this reprint edition may provide grist for future studies. As such it is a welcome addition to historical literature.

Assessment by a Technical CEO.......2002-02-02

This 83-page book handles an all-too-tacit subject that affects all of us, with refreshing realism, projected recovery duration, and an optimistic outlook for the future.

Part of the helpful realism candidly shown throughout this thought-provoking book is an ongoing assessment of the medical profession's pros and cons which is well worth many times the book's price. Through the author's experiences we can armor ourselves against the shock of unrealistic expectations and misplaced guilt regarding the medical profession and all other aspects of this phase of life which none of us can escape.

An optimistic sense of recovery is expressed in Chapters 12 and 13 that provides hope and guidance for the wife/now widow. Chapter 15 ends with a message that is universally good and correct: celebrate being alive. CELEBRATE BEING ALIVE! CELEBRATE LIFE.

This story is told in a chronology of fifteen chapters followed by "A Short Course on Goals" and a bibliography in a highly useful book completion.

This book spoke to me in a very special way.......2001-10-30

This afternoon I planned to skim the manuscript "#1 Mensch: How I Survived the Death of My Husband," by April Miller. I have a very busy life, but must tell you I couldn't put this book down. This book spoke to me (and I am 46 years old, married with two teen-agers), in a very special way.

I had expected a sentimental, blubbering story of a grieving victim, "how unfair the world is to widows" type personal account-but this is not at all what the book is about. True, it is one woman's personal experience with the various stages of grief, recovery and enlightenment, but it is also about appreciating life's gifts and tackling head-on what life hands out. We see through this manuscript a spunky but quite ordinary person taking on the medical establishment, looking into choices and alternatives, becoming the strong one in the relationship and eventually growing from dependant to independent and an achieving survivor.

What did I learn (after all, I have a living, healthy husband) was the stuff you don't learn in school, the things that people don't talk about: how to cope with adversity, resources to tap into, and what one might expect when caring for a loved one who, unlike a child who does more each day, can do less each day due to a terrible disease.

"#1 Mensch" is most readable, real yet full of hope. I would recommend this book to those coping with loss of a loved one, whether a spouse, parent, sibling, child or friend, and to those who some time in their future will need to face these difficulties -- for no one gets out of this world alive.
